Happy Satiated Saturday! Attachment theory explores the relationship between a parent and child and how that relationship affects future development and behavior. Insecure attachment has been found in many research studies to be connected with higher rates of disordered eating. Your attachment style can reveal itself in how you relate with others and can also show up in your relationship with food as well. There are 3 different insecure attachment styles that include: Anxious, Avoidant, and Disorganized. In this week's episode, let's dive into each insecure attachment style and how they can show up in your relationship with food. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/how-your-attachment-style-affects-your-relationship-with-food Having awareness of your attachment style can be empowering so that you have a deeper understanding of why you interact with your food the way you do. Change begins with cultivating awareness of what is. Awareness can create space for you to have a choice to show up in your relationship with food in a familiar way or in a new way. As a Thanksgiving treat, my Intro to Somatic Eating™ mini course is back on sale for 50% off until November 28th. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let's get started!    Lindsey: hello Dr Cabral. Thank you for all you do. For the last year I have gotten many chilazens on both eyes. At this current moment I have 3 on one eye one on the other. I do the hot compresses every day with no effect. After seeing many doctors one finally diagnosed me with ocular rosacea. Unfortunately the only suggestion was three weeks or more of antibiotics. My question is what is the underlying cause of ocular rosacea, or chilazens in general. The doctor said the oil is stuck in the gland, but I want to know why it keeps happening. Also any recommendations? Thank you! Shari: Hi doctor Cabral, I hope you're having a great day! I was wondering if you could help me with following: I've been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, SIBO and dysbiosis. I want to start treating them naturally, however I'm wondering which came first - the thyroid problems or gut problems. I feel that one probably caused the other. What are your thoughts about it? And which one should be treated first? Thank you SO much for your podcast and everything that you do! And just FYI - I've just purchased the CBO protocol and I have a feeling that it will help me on my way to perfect health :) Shari Joanna: Hi Dr Cabral Hoping you can help. I have completed the full CBO and while on the CBO I was taking Vitamin C crystals for histamine ( I took this type of vitamin C as better for oxolates) towards the end of the CBO I started getting alot of reflux burping etc. I am now on the heal and seal. I have found Vitamin C and anything with citrus like lemons etc causes tingling in my face and hands and now down to feet. I am assuming this is due to low b12 and low iron from low stomach acid. Is it possible Vitaminc C straight ascorbic acid can cause low stomach acid or even push down b12? As I retested my HTMA towards the end of the CBO and my cobolt was down to 0. Before CBO was normal. On heal and seal now and I still have bloating plus tingling and reflux, I have started taking hcl and removed any foods causing me reflux. My main question is, I am concerned I now have a return of SIBO due to low stomach acid, I am a bit concerned of doing the GSE drops again as it's citrus and have done GSE already like 3 times now over a few years, and concerned my stomach lining has eroded Would he clean gut probiotic be enough to help with any remaining SIBO if there is any? Or you can only remove SIBO with GSE, GI balance and clean gut all together? Many thanks for your help much appreciated :) Maria: Hi Dr. Cabral! I've been reading a lot about the benefits of plant protein and have been trying to convert myself over to eating less animal protein. My ultimate goal would be maybe 5 animal protein meals a week, instead of the 14 I currently eat. My problem is that I'm having a hard time adjusting to the fiber intake of beans, chickpeas, etc. After eating a meal with 1 cup of black beans or chickpeas, I have horrible gas and bloating. I've done the food sensitivity test and no legumes showed up as sensitivities, so I'm guessing this reaction is all due to fiber. How do you suggest I make this conversion? How long should it take for my body to get used to this amount of fiber? Side note, I have awful histamine issues that I'm currently addressing, so I stay away from tofu because of the high histamine level. Currently on week 2 of CBO protocol. Bec: Can you please give me insight into my eating pattern. Largely I am an extremely healthy eater. Green juices (largely veg), balanced meals (protein, fats, Veg) take Foundational supplements, exercise, 3L water & mid week fasting days & don't take medications. Have done Cabral 21 day detox, Cabral intestinal cleanse (12 months ago) & Liver Cleanse. But I need to understand the psychology of my; 1. Binge eating on sugar. The desire for sugar generally occurs after a healthy meal-but if I sample sugar it turns into a binge ( uncontrollable). I am unable to have a small portion. I don't understand the physiology/chemistry of my body that I am so overwhelmed with sugar. 2. When Im with a social group and a platter is presented ( cheese, Quince, Crackers). I eat uncontrollably even if I am satiated prior OR a meal is provided after. I try to analyse whether it is nervous energy/do something with hands-but feel Im a confident person and shouldn't need to obsessively/anxiously snack. 3. Drink Fast-again in social scenarios I drink quickly. I replace some alcoholic beverages with sparkling water to offset the speed and therefore the amount I drink. I also used to be a social smoker-so wonder whether this eating/bingeing behaviour is some mild neurosis. Pls help me understand & overcome. Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am a devoted listener and I'm going through IHP level 1 right now and loving it. I researched my question, but couldn't find an answer. Hoping you can help. My husband was recently diagnosed with gynecomastia. He is 6' 1" and 165lbs. Eats a healthy, well balanced diet of mostly organic food and is on a good daily regiment of supplements. He has had the minerals and metals test run about 6 months ago and the hormone test run about a year ago. Both pointed towards his body being under a lot of stress...electrolytes depleted, cortisol high at lunch and too low in the evening, and his DHEA and Testosterone were low (testosterone was 68), estradiol was normal. We implemented the protocols given at the time by his practitioner, including taking DHEA for 12 weeks. The things he is working on are his sedentary lifestyle (he works from home as a computer tech and his low energy makes it hard for him to get up and get moving as much as he would like) and he typically has a drink or 2 most evenings. He's decided to cut back on his coffee and alcohol intake. We are wondering what else we can do to help this problem? Is it an estrogen dominance problem? And if so, could he try Estrogen Balance or a DIM supplement? Happy Satiated Saturday!Thanksgiving is my mother's favorite holiday. She loves food, cooking, gathering, and feeding others. Like many, we have our Thanksgiving dish staples that she makes every single year. One of those is sweet potato casserole. When I met my husband, we began alternating which family we would spend Thanksgiving with. Something I started noticing is the years I would spend Thanksgiving with my husband's family, my craving for sweet potato casserole shot up. I would re-make this recipe the best I could and yet I could never quite make it the way she does. (Perhaps the missing ingredient is motherly love.) Anyways, I sat with this intense craving year after year when Thanksgiving would come around when I wasn't spending it with my mother.... In this week's episode, I will share what I learned about my sweet potato casserole craving, 3 reasons cravings increase during the holidays, and Somatic Eating™ strategies to navigating your cravings differently. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/3-reasons-why-cravings-increase-during-the-holidaysWhat do you crave around the holidays? I hate binging, and yet that behavior still worms its way into my life at times. My most recent slip came at the hands of Netflix’s new hit, Squid Game. This week I’m yapping about the dangers of binging T.V., why I enjoyed Squid Game so much, and how great South Korean movie and show productions are. Along with that, as I round one of the final corners of writing my book, I’ve been editing the early chapters in tandem. As I plan to have the main meat of the book finished by the end of 2021, the editing process has been a roller coaster. Some days I’m left liberated and excited about what I’ve omitted and what I’ve corrected. Other days, those editing decisions are much more difficult and maddening. Overall, the process of writing my book has been incredible—proving to me that I’m capable of big projects with intensely challenging aspects. Finally, I’m wrapping up this episode with a yucky little bow—my previous video game addiction. As you may have read in a recent column I wrote, I’ve been dealing with some inclinations to dive back into gaming. With a newfound ability to exercise some self-control, I’m scared of touching one of my bigger weaknesses again. I don’t want to fall into the cycle of binging, and yet, I feel that I should be able to balance my game time appropriately. It’s an ongoing battle. And yes, that is an old picture of me with long hair. No shame, those locks were beautiful. Happy Satiated Saturday!  I have seen over the years when healing your relationship with food, there is a point many realize when it's not really about the food anymore. The focus on what, when, and how you're eating came in as protection. This protection was keeping you safe from addressing other areas, beliefs, perspectives that may have felt too emotionally intense to look at where focusing on your food actually felt safer in your body to ruminate on.  Healing your relationship with food can be experienced as in service to creating more emotional space to process, digest, assimilate, what your body has been emotionally holding on to. When you have been dieting, restricting, and focusing on food for years and years there can be many emotional reactions that arise in the process of shifting your focus away from food to attend to other areas of your life that need healing. In this week's episode, I will discuss the stages of healing your relationship with food and what you can expect on a food healing journey. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/the-emotional-stages-of-healing-your-relationship-with-foodYou get to trust you're always exactly where you're meant to be. In the second segment, the Guys discuss series they're currently binge-watching. Some are new shows, some not quite so new, and one reaches way back to days when we weren't so hard to please. Hulu and HBO Max are this episode's winning streaming services, so see how the Guys' suggestions stack up.

Happy Satiated Saturday!  I want you to imagine eating a meal in a loud, bustling restaurant. Notice how you feel in your body. Now imagine your eating at a quaint quiet cottage. Again, notice how you feel. Imagine you're eating a meal standing up at the sink. Now imagine you're eating a meal in your favorite part of your home. Notice the different sensations that arose through these images. Your environment then plays a huge role in making a meal feel satiating and satisfying. In this week's episode, we will explore how your eating environment affects your eating patterns and digestion. I will also offer questions you can begin asking yourself before every meal to bring more attention to your eating environment. I felt it was apropos that when speaking about eating environment, a motorcycle passed by outside while I was recording. I decided to keep it in and notice how you feel in your body with the words that were being spoken and the sound of the motorcycle as it passes by. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/how-eating-environment-impacts-emotional-eating How do different eating environments affect your experience of your meal? Happy Satiated Saturday!  Food is often the first form of love we receive as a baby from a parent or caretaker. While you're being fed, often there is eye contact, touch, and nourishment. This can leave a baby feeling heard, seen, acknowledged, loved, and cared for.Emotional and physical hungers are being satiated at the same time. This can lead to the signals for emotional and physical hungers to get crossed at a young age. Because food becomes something that supports you in feeling safe and attuned to from the time you're born, it is important to somatically identify what the difference between emotional and physical hungers feels like in your body so that you know as an adult what best satiates each kind of hunger. In this week's episode, I will share tips on how to somatically identify the difference between physical and emotional hunger in your body so you feel more empowered in how to identify which hunger you're feeling and optimally satiate the hunger present. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/how-to-somatically-identify-the-difference-between-physical-and-emotional-hunger. You get to be gentle with yourself in this process. Going Beyond the Food: Intuitive Eating, Emotional Eating, Body Neutrality, Diet Mindset and Anti-Diet Podcast

Most often, when women start their journey beyond dieting, it's because they want to overcome compulsive eating behaviors like binging or what they self-describe as “overeating.”  They have learned that restriction is causing these compulsive eating behaviors, so they quit dieting... but is it the solution? Is it the only action that needs to be taken in order to end compulsion around food? That's what we discussed on today's podcast. If perhaps you are at this point where even though you have lifted the restriction and still struggling with "overeating," binging & diet culture this is a must-listen! What you'll learn listening to this episode: The link between restriction and compulsive eating behavior What most people miss when it comes to compulsive eating behavior Why making peace with food is not the ultimate solution for binging, overeating or any compulsive behaviors. The belief that is fundamentally holding your back from eating “normally.” Mentioned in the show: Podcast Roadmap  Undiet Your Life

Ana Vucetic is here for the first of a two-part series to discuss Recovering from Dieting and Disordered Eating. Dieting is someone else telling you what, when and how much to eat. What if you don't like it, or don't digest it well, or don't feel happy after eating it? It's listening to someone else's opinion and feeling in control, but it's quite the opposite. We don't know what we like or how it makes us feel since most diets are so restrictive. How do you sustain this? Binging, guilt and shame often follow once you reach the “maintenance” phase of most diets as our internal saboteurs want to rebel after all this restriction. How do we recover from this? Ana dives into this important topic in today's podcast.   Ana Vucetic is a Psychologist, Certified Wellness Coach, Founder of “Balanced by Ana” and mother of 2 beautiful boys. Driven by her own health struggles, Ana now is on a mission to help women feel comfortable in their body and stop the endless dieting cycles. She helps achieve a balanced approach to life and wellness by helping to clean your emotional pantry and not the kitchen! Ana believes that a balanced life is not just about the food we eat and how we move, how many hours in a week we put into our fitness routines and meal preparation - it is also how we process stress, how we manage relationships, how we balance our hormones for optimal functioning, as well as knowing your own body and the signals it gives you. Happy Satiated Saturday! FOMO was first popularized in 2004 and means fear of missing out. FOMO can play out in our relationship with food as the fear of missing out on tastes, textures, certain foods around specific times of year, or the pleasure from a food. Often, the moment of Food FOMO has little to do with the food itself and more to do with the attachment and meaning we have put on that food. The experience of Food FOMO is then perpetuated by the sensations of fear in the body. In this week's episode, we will break down what happens in your body when you experience Food FOMO and new ways to navigate these food moments. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here. https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/ways-to-respond-to-food-fomoIf you're curious and interested to begin incorporating Somatic Eating™ practices into your day, my Intro to Somatic Eating™ mini course is still 50% off. For the first 30 years of my life, my relationship with food had 2 'modes'.  On -OR-   Off There was no middle ground for me.  I was either walking around day-in, day-out as:   My Inner Food Police:  Micromanaging every morsel of food I ate or thought about eating. Controlling myself, restricting myself, punishing myself, and persuading myself not to eat certain things because they were "bad" or "not healthy". Obsession. Harsh judgments. All that shame, blame, guilt, comparison, and perfectionism...  -OR-  My Inner Rebel (See also: Inner Glutton!)  Carefree abandonment – eating whatever I could get my hands on. Gluttonously over-stuffing myself.  Binging on the weekends. Utter lack of care of my body, what I ate, how I moved, and my health in general. But also feeling like I had to "get it all in" over the weekend before I went back into "Police" mode on Monday.   And THIS was my life for over 30 years! Bouncing from one extreme to the other:  I would diet and restrict until I couldn't possibly take it anymore, and then....I would TOTALLY let myself go. But the day came that I hit my 'enough is enough' point, and I realized that if I didn't change my STRATEGY and change the STORIES around food and my body that were keeping me stuck, this is how it would ALWAYS be! And that scared the crap out of me, and THAT is when I knew I had to set out to change it.  Because... ★ I was SICK of all the dieting and restricting and constantly playing 'food police'. ★ I was SICK of all the judging and shaming and EMOTION that came alongside food. ★ I was SICK of hating what I had to DO, who I had to BE, and how I had to FEEL to get the "body I always wanted".  It was EXHAUSTING. And I was the OPPOSITE of FREE.  So if YOU are still stuck on that on-again, off-again roller coaster with food or your body or your emotions, I'm here to tell you: There IS a better way! And you don't have to live like this!      And that's why I break down what's happening deep down in your BRAIN when this happens...and how to stop it in its tracks.  ★ Watch The Stressless Eating Webinar: https://www.StresslessEating.com

Happy Satiated Saturday! We have many different parts of us. These inner parts of us all feel as though they are serving us in some way. When in relationship with food, it can be supportive to get curious about who's choosing your food, who's doing the eating, what is that part of you desiring to receive from food, where do they live in your body, and what does it feel like when they show up. During my teenage years, when my emotions felt too big to navigate, my inner child would come in with, "Alright, I've got this. We need ice cream, doritos, or pizza stat." Coming out of a food coma, all I was dealing with was an upset tummy instead of my emotions. In this week's episode, I will discuss how to identify what part of you is eating when choosing food to self soothe and new ways to show up for this part of you.You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/what-part-of-you-emotionally-eats. With Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxTo discover what your current relationship status is with food currently, you can go take my free What Is Your Relationship Status With Food Quiz here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/foodrelationshipquiz. Kia ora! On today's show, we caught up with Newshub Entertainment Reporter and Film Reviewer, Kate Rodger, on the shows we should be binging this lockdown. Even when we get out of lockdown, we'll probably still be binging them! Since we're on the topic of binging... Jono got into another internet wormhole, this time about Netflix. Did you know that Netflix started before Google?! Finally, we caught up with Sir John Kirwan, and this was a really awesome chat about how we can keep ourselves mentally healthy in lockdown. Stay safe, stay sanitised and good day Aotearoa!

As the hours tick by, you start to notice familiar urges arise. Suddenly, at 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 9:00, or 11:00 pm, as if you had blacked out, you find yourself stewing over how you ate the entire bag of this or a whole carton of that. In this week's episode, I will share the top 3 reasons your food habits aren't changing. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/why-your-food-habits-arent-changing. A different relationship with food is possible. Satiated Saturdays Episode 93: How Eating Ice Cream For Dinner Healed My Relationship With Food And It Can For You Too

Happy Satiated Saturday! It was my first year of Graduate School and my first time living by myself in my own apartment. I was experimenting with applying the somatic tools I was learning in relationship with food. Up until that point in time, I had also labeled foods as good or bad, something that if you have been with me for a while I'm very clear now that there are no good or bad foods. I knew that to deepen into healing my relationship with all food I needed to also have neutral eating experiences with foods I had labeled as "bad." So I created an experiment for myself. Every day for a week, I chose a food I had labeled as "bad" and ate that for dinner. One of those foods was ice cream. In this week's episode, I share my experience with de-labeling a food and how you can too. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/eating-ice-cream-for-dinnerGive yourself all the time you need on your food and body adventure. Lisa can't be the only parent who loves binging through old (or semi old) comedies with their kids, now that you can stream almost anything, anytime, anywhere. It is always interesting to go back and see if the comedy holds up, or alternatively what is so cringy you have to shut your eyes, ears and hold your nose….as well as tell your kids “now that thing they said, or did, was WRONG. It was wrong then and it is still wrong now”. It can lead to some good conversations. Anyway, after running through Seinfeld, Friends, Scrubs, The Office, Parks and Rec, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, Odd Couple, Lisa and the boys reached back to fire up Cheers. There are tons of great casting stories and lore that go along with this era defining show, including who was “almost” cast as “Sam” and “Diane”. Hint: we narrowly missed having Cliff Huxtable own a bar. So join Lisa and Paul as they pour a cold one in honor of place where everybody knows your name.
