Hi everyone. This is Robert. Welcome to The Well Told Tale. Every week I narrate a classic story; the greatest science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction stories ever written, not just in a small chunk at a time, but enough for you to really relax into. No adverts in the middle, just the story itself. All stories are pubic domain and free from copyright.
With Harker trapped in Count Dracula's castle the narrative moves to England and Jonathon Harker's love, Miss Mina Murray. Those of a faint heart beware, our new Tale is a dark fantasy and horror classic: 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker. Tales of vampires weren't new when Stoker wrote Dracula; he borrowed heavily from Eastern European folklore and popularised stories of vampires. Published over a century ago, 'Dracula' still has the power to terrify. Younger listeners, proceed with caution as we embark upon our longest Well Told Tale to date!Support The Well Told Tale via our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thewelltoldtaleBooks - (buying books from our Bookshop.org shop helps support this channel while also supporting local bookshops, at no cost to you):Books by our favourite authors - https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/the-well-told-taleBuy Dracula - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9780241411155Bram Stoker Horror Stories - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781786647832 The Vampyre and Other Tales of the Macabre by John Polidori - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9780199552412I would like to thank my patrons: Joshua Clark, Maura Lee, Jane, John Bowles, Cade Norman, Matt Woodward, Spockk Kirkk, Kirsten Flores and Lori ScottSupport the show

This week, we have a short story from master of gothic fantasy horror, William Hope Hodgson. Famous in his lifetime for his novels 'The House on the Borderland' and 'The Night Land', this short story, 'The Voice in the Night', has arguably been his most influential. Dark, brooding, fantastical, it bears the hallmarks of Hodgson's style, and its themes can be traced to the modern day, with horror works such as 'The Last of Us'. This week we begin a new Tale from a writer we have featured before: master of paranoia and the nightmarishly mundane, Franz Kafka. 'The Trial' (or 'Der Process' as it is known in German) follows the story of Josef K., a man arrested and put on trial by a distant and obscure authority for a crime unknown to him. It was written during the early part of WW1 and salvaged by Kafka's friend, Max Brod, to be published posthumously a decade later. It would become one of Kafka's best known works.Books - (buying books from our Bookshop.org shop helps support this channel while also supporting local bookshops, at no cost to you):Books by our favourite authors - https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/the-well-told-taleThe Trial - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781513264851Metamorphosis and Other Stories - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9780241436240The Castle - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9780241372579I would like to thank my patrons: Joshua Clark, Maura Lee, Jane, John Bowles, and Cade Norman.Support the show
This week, we return to one of the English language's wittiest writers, Oscar Wilde. We have already dipped into his 1880 short story collection for children 'The Happy Prince and Other Tales', and this time we bring you the title story from that collection. It would be a few years before he wrote 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and subsequently carve out his reputation as a playwright, but the brilliance Wilde would be known for is evident in these earlier stories.Books - (buying books from our Bookshop.org shop helps support this channel while also supporting local bookshops, at no cost to you):Books by our favourite authors - https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/the-well-told-taleThe Happy Prince and Other Stories - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781604506587The Canterville Ghost and Other Stories - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781444931655The Picture of Dorian Gray - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9780993995132I would like to thank my patrons: Joshua Clark, Maura Lee, Jane, John Bowles, and Cade Norman.Support the show
To celebrate the end of the Christmas season and the start of a New Year, we bring you this classic short story, 'The Gift of the Magi', by O. Henry. It is his first appearance on The Well Told Tale, but will not be his last - he is the veritable master of the short story, and this example is no exception. Traditionally, the Magi reached the baby Jesus 12 days after Christmas to bestow their gifts, bringing the Christmas season to a close. We embark on an epic voyage with this week's Tale, plunging "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" by master of early sci-fi, Jules Verne. This fantastical Tale originally appeared in a serialised form over 1869 to 1870 in a fortnightly periodical, and was subsequently published as a novel the year later. It has been an enduring classic ever since. We begin our story with speculation about a great sea creature causing shipwrecks across the world - what could be the true nature of these calamities?Books - (buying books from our Bookshop.org shop helps support this channel while also supporting local bookshops, at no cost to you):Books by our favourite authors - https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/the-well-told-taleJules Verne: Seven Novels - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781435122956 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781513265926Around the World in 80 Days - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9780008514280From the Earth to the Moon - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781398810594I would like to thank my patrons: Joshua Clark, Maura Lee, Jane, John Bowles, and Cade Norman.Support the show
This week, we have a classic fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm, 'Hansel and Gretel.' As with many of Grimm's fairy tales, this story most likely came from the oral tradition of storytelling in the region, before the brothers wrote them down and widened their appeal. In the spirit of this tradition, it is perhaps not surprising that the brothers amended their tales in subsequent editions of their books, meaning this version may contain some elements with which you are less familiar... This week we explore a post-apocalyptic world in a Tale from one of our favourites, sci-fi luminary Philip K. Dick. Mutants have emerged, and the world, feeling threatened, has been rounding up these new humans. The idea has been played out in many superhero movies over the years, but, as is so often the case, Philp K. Dick got there first. We return this week with another visit to the Hyborian Age with a Conan Tale from Robert E. Howard. Last week, we began our second journey into the Marvelous Land of Oz, and met Tip and his inadvertent companion, Jack Pumpkinhead. These characters may seem familiar if you have ever seen Disney's 1985 film 'Return to Oz', a much darker sequel to the classic 'The Wizard of Oz'. Jack Pumpkinhead plays a pivotal role in the film, which takes elements of this Oz story and the next in the series, 'Ozma of Oz,' and throws in some other ideas to create a film that, while not well known, retains a cult following. This week, we follow our heroes into the Emerald City. This week, our Tale is a short story from another of the greats of the golden age of science fiction, 'What Shall It Profit?' by Poul Anderson. He was a multi award winning writer, with multiple Hugos and Nebulas to his name. The title of this story is the first part of a quote from the King James Bible, taken from the Mark's gospel. The whole quote, intriguing in the context of this story, reads "What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his soul?"If you'd like to support The Well Told Tale, please visit us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thewelltoldtaleBooks - (buying books from our Bookshop.org shop helps support this channel while also supporting local bookshops, at no cost to you):Books by our favourite authors - https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/the-well-told-taleInside Earth - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781515404361The Sensitive Man - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781515406808Fantastic Stories Presents: The Poul Anderson Super Pack - https://uk.bookshop.org/a/9522/9781515406280 I would like to thank my patrons: Toni A, Joshua Clark, Maura Lee, Jane, John Bowles, Ruairi, Cade Norman, and Silja Tanner.Support the show
