This week on *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*, Clay and Amanda are doing nothing to help my steadily worsening vampire confusion by taking a big ol' bite out of Werner Herzog's 1979 classic Nosferatu the Vampyre, starring Klaus Kinski as maybe the creepiest Dracula/Nosferatu/Count Orlok hybrid ever filmed. It's moody, it's beautiful, and it's got rats. So many rats. Okay. Look. I'm just gonna say it: I think we've officially hit critical mass on Nosferatus and Draculas. I mean, how many pasty bald guys with capes and long fingernails named “Count Something” does the world *need*? First there was the original *Nosferatu*, then Lugosi's *Dracula*, then Lee's *Dracula*, then the *Nosferatu* remake, then Dracula in space, Dracula in love, Dracula with a podcast probably—I don't know anymore. The point is, I'm starting to suspect these aren't *characters* in movies. I think they might be *real*, and I think they're multiplying. Every time I look around, there's another Nosferatu lurking in a dark corner, hissing at a cat. I'm tired. I'm confused. And I'm scared of capes now.Join Clay and Amanda as they dive into Herzog's eerie homage to Murnau's 1922 silent classic and debate just how many spooky bald vampires is too many. Is Kinski's Count Dracula really just Orlok with a stage name? Does it matter when he's this unsettling? Who gave him permission to move like *that*?One thing's for sure: if another Nosferatu pops up, I'm going into hiding. Probably somewhere with garlic. Maybe in a mall. Wait, no—*not* a mall. We've been over that.Anyway, listen in… while you still can.And be sure to hit up patreon.com/thepenskyfile to hear all the coverage of remakes and reboots this year!

Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Necronomicon (1993), and Gods of the Deep (2023) While Stephen King may dominate when it comes to movie adaptations of his work—good or bad—one might expect that H.P. Lovecraft, given his immense impact on the literary world, would inspire just as many films. Yet, despite his influence, far fewer movies have been made from his stories than you'd think. Perhaps it's because Lovecraft's horror isn't about the details of what his characters see, but rather what those horrors do to them—often driving them into madness. And therein lies the beauty of his work. In this episode, we dive into three very different films, spanning three decades, each drawing from the strange and unsettling tales of this enigmatic author from Providence, Rhode Island. If you're not well-versed in Lovecraft's work, this is your chance to experience three adaptations—loose as they may be—that offer a glimpse into his nightmarish imagination. Films Mentioned in this Episode: Castle Freak (1995), Color Out of Space (2019), Creepshow (1982), The Crimson Blade (1963), Crying Freeman (1995), Demon Wind (1990), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966), The Dunwich Horror (1970), The Evil Dead (1981), From Beyond (1986), Gamera, Guardian of the Universe (1995), Gods of the Deep (2023), Hatchet (2006), The Haunted Palace (1963), Humanoids from the Deep (1981), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), The Invisible Ray (1935), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Leprechaun (1993), Leprechaun 2 (1994), Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996), Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000), Leprechaun 6: Back 2 Tha Hood (2003), Lovecraft Country (2020), Lurking Fear (1994), Necronomicon (1993), Re-Animator (1985), Return of the Living Dead III (1993), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), The Unnamable (1988), Vampyres (1974)

Send us a textIn this episode, I want to delve into what is generally viewed as the first vampire novel - the VAMPYRE by John William Polidori and published in 1819. This novella marked the beginning of modern vampire fiction and introduced the archetype of the aristocratic vampire through the character of Lord Ruthven. Polidori's work was inspired by a fragment of a story written by Lord Byron during a ghost story competition - and there was quite a bit of disagreement regarding who wrote what!Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

A few years back, novels classed as “romantasy”—a portmanteau of “romance” and “fantasy”—might have seemed destined to attract only niche appeal. But since the pandemic, the genre has proved nothing short of a phenomenon. Sarah J. Maas's “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series regularly tops best-seller lists, and last month, Rebecca Yarros's “Onyx Storm” became the fastest-selling adult novel in decades. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz are joined by their fellow New Yorker staff writer Katy Waldman as they delve into the realm of romantasy themselves. Together, they consider some of the most popular entries in the genre, and discuss how monitoring readers' reactions on BookTok, a literary corner of TikTok, allows writers to tailor their work to fans' hyperspecific preferences. Often, these books are conceived and marketed with particular tropes in mind—but the key ingredient in nearly all of them is a sense of wish fulfillment. “The reason that I think they're so powerful and they provide such solace to us is because they tell us, ‘You're perfect. You're always right. You have the hottest mate. You have the sickest powers,' ” Waldman says. “I totally get it. I fall into those reveries, too. I think we all do.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Did a Best-Selling Romantasy Novelist Steal Another Writer's Story?,” by Katy Waldman (The New Yorker)“The Song of the Lioness,” by Tamora Pierce“A Court of Thorns and Roses,” by Sarah J. This was my interview with Washington DC-based darkwave gothic rock band called The Neuro Farm when they released their album entitled "VOICES" The project The Neuro Farm was formed when Brian Wolff met Rebekah Feng while in graduate school at Georgetown University working on their PhDs in neuroscience around 2011.  While they were both also working on their own  solo musical  projects at the time, they both shared a common interest in the neurosciences and in the darker genre of music.  In 2017 Colin in drums and percussion (DreamrD)  joined the band and Tim Phillips  in synths and programming  joined them in 2021.  Their latest singles are out now: Metamorphosis and Panic. On October 31, 2022 they released one of the best covers I have ever heard of the Joy Division's New Dawn Fades. The Neuro Farm has released four full-length original albums so far: Vampyre (2021), The Descent (2019), and Ghosts (2014) . Hello, Hello, Hello, This is the second part of the discussion we had on Robert Eggers! Here, Dhruv – joined by the brain-melting and blood-sucking vampire, Varun, and his “spirited animal” friend, Hemant – tries to talk about Eggers' latest horror film, “Nosferatu,” in relation to F. W. Murnau's 1922 German Expressionist classic, and Werner Herzog's existentially despairing 1979 remake of it. But little does he know the digressions this deadly duo has in store for him… Listen to the full episode to hear him respond to the absurdity of Varun referencing Zoya Akhtar's “Dil Dhadakne Do” when talking about Murnau's classic, or, worse still, the Sridevi-and-Anil-Kapoor-starrer “Judaai” when he's talking about the Eggers' version. There's plenty of discussion about how these films, despite tackling the same story, have such drastically different treatments. But that's if you can look past those comparisons… Best of luck to all! In this episode, with the recent release of Robert Eggers long awaited version of Nosferatu, we're going back to the original, one of cinema's first true monsters, in F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu, then following it up with Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre. As in our first Twice Told Tales episode, this isn't a comparison as to which one is better, but an opportunity to dig deep into each film, discussing why we think the impact it has made is still felt today, for both versions. We'll point out the differences, the similarities, as well as some other behind-the-scenes on the films and filmmakers as well.  There is a reason the original film, one that was supposed to be completely destroyed, still lives on, almost like the undead title character. There is a reason you'll see a photo from Nosferatu in almost every book on the horror film genre. And some might think for Herzog to dare make his own versoin of this iconic classic was utter nonsense. Until you see the film. Join us on a little journey back over a century into the past, to the very beginning of horror cinema, and an incredible new take on this tale. Films mentioned in this episode: The 400 Blows (1959), Bicycle Thieves (1948), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Breathless (1960), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), Count Dracula (1970), Dracula (1931), Dracula (1979), Dracula Blows His Cool (1979), Friday the 13th (1980), For a Few Dollars More (1965), The Great Silence (1968), Love at First Bite (1979), Horror of Dracula (1958), Nocturna (1979), Nosferatu (1922), Nosferatu (2024), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Salem's Lot (1979), Shadow of the Vampire (2000), Thirst (1979), Vampire (1979), Vampire in Venice (1988)

He began writing when he was in grade school because he found it relaxed him, and helped him to “escape” the real world. As time went on, he was given the opportunity to teach a drama class at a local high school, to which he accepted and focused on the importance of stage presence and character building. This later led to a request that would change everything for him. He was asked to create a “believable” Vampire character, and not only did he comply, but his character went on to become his personal persona that would later thrive as the main character of the Vampyre Tales. His books have been taking vampire fans on a journey of their own, leaving a trail of rave reviews and one award thus far, and it's only the beginning. He was also the “head vampire” for one of Canada‘s largest theme parks, for the Halloween season several years running which attracted the attention of other organizations. He was hired as a consultant, to build their theatrical haunted houses for the and Screamers in Ottawa Ontario Canada, operated by the Kiwanis was the first, then went on to become a well-known Halloween hotspot . Being non for profit, other Kiwanis divisions throughout the country have since based their Halloween haunts on the Ottawa location, and the creativity behind the origins, have come from Wayne Mallows. Wayne owned a haunted Gothic Revival Manor House for over a decade, and is no Stranger to the Paranormal He has also appeared on paranormal television, with a few honourable mentions being Paranormal Survivor S3, Paranormal Night Shift, There's No Such Thing as Ghosts, Much Music, and more. Disclaimer: This episode was recorded back in October back when Alex and I watched it, unlike our previous review of the 1922 that we recorded last week. We repeat some points we made in that episode here because we had not decide to release this one in December at the time. So how do you remake of the most influential and important silent films in German history, as well as film history in general? Ambitious and remarkable director Werner Herzog decided the best route was simply to update and expand what was there, while very much adding his own personality it. How does it compare? What does the new 2024 remake have to live up to?

Continuing our trio of episodes this week about the films which adapt Dracula in a very specific but different kind of way. F. W. Murnau's 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was remade in 1979 by now legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog into a contemplative, grim, and lush presentation he called NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE. Distinguishing itself in many ways from its predecessor while still keeping the primary story intact, Herzog's Nosferatu is saturated with a dim and often oppressively bleak outlook. It's given power by a trio of strong performances in the main roles but also has an overt despair that permeates the entire story. Despite that tone, we have a surprisingly laughter-filled conversation about it.Also featuring a Patron-only discussion about the recent awards contender, CONCLAVE, this episode is a disarming amount of fun and we hope you enjoy it.Patron Only Segment: CONCLAVE4:52 - NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
