'Darren has reached deeply into the very bottom of toilet humour.' 'iiieeeooo.' Humankind has one more chance, a second-last chance, to survive. We are in a lot of trouble if these zany characters are our last hope. Prison Planet accommodates the American crew, safely landing with all dubious passengers intact. An evil warden assumes the role of dictator for the planet's lifers. Crew 7 must escape the clutches of the warden and his hench . . . men/women/other. But who are the real criminals? The House of FILTH. Some still dealing with their own afflictions, the ex-psychiatric patients stumble upon an oasis on a new planet. The 'most powerful organisation in the universe' does not take kindly to strangers. In another world, on the isolated island of Retro-Tech, who or what is the unknown entity that has seized control? Climb aboard the realm-hopping transport with Arros Sole to get to the bottom of it. Born Darren Edward Watling, Subiaco, Western Australia, 1966. Darren excelled in English, maintaining ‘A's, throughout his schooling and wrote a play, ‘Laughing Gas', for his school at the age of 10. Credited with a few small, published articles, Darren found inspiration and reward, arriving at his latest piece, ‘2nd Last Chance'. He completed an apprenticeship, as a fitter, at Princess Margaret Hospital, while continuing his passion for short story writing. Travelling Australia for three years on a private bus gave Darren a beginning to the experiences and continued, humorous outlook he has on life. Darren approached Jill Stubbs Mills and asked for her blessing to take her short story, ‘Deception', and rewrite it into a novel. (The feedback from Fremantle Press about her story was exceptional). Jill agreed to her son's request. Sadly, Jill now suffers with dementia, but, laughably, keeps her sense of humour. Various forms of employment, including a movie extra, a welder on a crocodile farm, a drummer for a touring band and currently a roof plumber, gave Darren considerable, ‘fuel', for a comedic novel. Darren has had several passions over the past 50 odd years while walking this Earth. Drums, Karate, Tennis and continuing today- comedic writing. You can learn more about Darren E. Watling and his books on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/darren.watling.37/ and Instagram at  https://www.instagram.com/darren.e.watling/ TOPICS OF CONVERSATION Humor and Satire: Using comedy to critique society and shape characters. Character Inspirations: Creating exaggerated characters with real-world influences. Worldbuilding: Crafting absurd settings like Prison Planet and House of Filth. Writing Process: From adapting a short story to surprising plot twists. Audience and Reception: Targeting older readers and reactions to dark humor. What's next for Darren Watling?

This week we're back to talk about one of the most (unfairly)maligned sequels of the 80s. Facing strong headwinds on the road to getting made, Ghostbusters 2 was criticized as a carbon copy of the first, and it struggled to capture even half of the box office of the 1984 classic as Batman fever swept the nation, and sequels from Back to the Future and Indiana Jones took up moviegoers attention. Credited for "killing the franchise" for decades, Ghostbusters 2 is a solid example of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" filmmaking, and this week Mike, Devaughn and Jessica are on hand to weigh its pros and cons. Label: MGM 13721Year: 1967Condition: M-Last Price: $20.00. Not currently available for sale.Credited to "Eric Burdon & The Animals," this is the group's finest foray into psychedelic rock. Every time I hear the opening guitar growl, it's obvious where Black Sabbath got the inspiration for the similar opening growl to "Iron Man." Now in the Classic 45's jukebox, cause it's one of those nuggets that just doesn't get played often enough. The big mystery to me is why Dave Marsh left it off his list of the 1,001 greatest 45s of Rock'n'Soul. It would definitely be on my list (if I ever make one!) For one thing, this is a single that was not included on any contemporary Animals album ? this was a previously unreleased, non-LP single. The two sides eventually got added to an Animals compilation CD, but you won't find them anywhere on vinyl (to my knowledge) except on this little 45 record. (And may I say how incredible the audio is? Stunning doesn't come close!) Note: This beautiful copy has a drillhole and comes in a vintage MGM Records factory sleeve. The vinyl has some notable scuffs, particularly on the B side, grading a strong EX. Miraculously, the audio comes through clean Near Mint with just a touch of surface noise here and there. (This scan is a representative image from our archives--the copy for sale has NO drillhole)

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jerry Mitchell. Credited with helping to put four Klu Klux Klan members and a serial killer into greater confinement, Mitchell was awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. Mitchell, who's a White Man, authored the book Race Against Time, which examines the history of White Terrorist violence in the “magnolia state” - much of it involving Race Soldiers who successfully evaded prosecution for killing black people. We'll examine Mitchell's coverage of more recent Terrorist violence in the state. The 2011 lynching of James Craig Anderson, who was killed by a mob of young White teens who went hunting for a black person to kill. Last year, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker were sexually terrorized by the local “Goon Squad.” The “goons” made the black males shower together, doused them with chocolate sauce, and attempted to use a dildo on the two. We'll highlight the family connection between these two incidents, Deryl Dedmon murdered Anderson, Christian Dedmon is a convicted “goon,” and emphasize that White ignorance fails to explain this generational pattern of White Supremacist violence. We even made time for a word on the welfare queen Brett Favre, accused of stealing TANF funds with the help of his White cronies, and the late Carolyn Bryant Donham, who lived a long life of White Supremacy and lies while evading prosecution for her role in the lynching of Emmett L. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. Credited with popularizing the label "ex-wife" in 1929, Ursula Parrott wrote provocatively about divorcées, career women, single mothers, work-life balance, and a host of new challenges facing modern women. Her best sellers, Hollywood film deals, marriages and divorces, and run-ins with the law made her a household name. Part biography, part cultural history, Becoming the Ex-Wife: The Unconventional Life and Forgotten Writings of Ursula Parrott (U California Press, 2024) establishes Parrott's rightful place in twentieth-century American culture, uncovering her neglected work and keen insights into American women's lives during a period of immense social change. Although she was frequently dismissed as a "woman's writer," reading Parrott's writing today makes it clear that she was a trenchant philosopher of modernity—her work was prescient, anticipating issues not widely raised until decades after her decline into obscurity. Although she was frequently dismissed as a "woman's writer," reading Parrott's writing today makes it clear that she was a trenchant philosopher of modernity—her work was prescient, anticipating issues not widely raised until decades after her decline into obscurity. With elegant wit and a deft command of the archive, Marsha Gordon tells a timely story about the life of a woman on the front lines of a culture war that is still raging today. His coming-of-age, only partially caught on camera, included a lot of basketball and hands-on artistic development. A grant awarded in college gave him early access to VR technology which opened a path to combining all of his talents and interests and expressing them through new media. Now, as co-founder and Executive Director of Kinfolk Foundation, he's harnessing augmented reality, location-based technology, and community to engage in placing digital monuments in public spaces, memory building, and foregrounding the Black, Brown and Queer histories that have been intentionally silenced. Architect & designer Marc Thorpe spent his youth, just outside of Washington DC, drawing and learning to navigate a destabilizing home environment. The son of two academics, he learned discipline, rigor, and resilience from his mom, while his dad, a critical thinker, taught him to challenge and interrogate everything. Always knowing he'd be an artist, he studied Industrial Design and Architecture, and instinctively flexed his ability to seize every opportunity, as well as create them from scratch. Now, as the founder & principal of Marc Thorpe Design, a multidisciplinary studio, and (along with Claire Pijoulat) Edifice Upstate, a design & build architecture agency, he's worked with world-renowned designers, led groundbreaking projects, and is leading the charge toward more responsible architecture. And while he has always been certain he'd be a professional creative, it is uncertainty that is his greatest inspiration.Head to cleverpodcast.com for a transcript (with links!) of this episode, images, resources, and over 200+ more episodes! Natsai Audrey Chieza spent her youth in Zimbabwe in a close-knit extended family where she and her cousins were “in each others' pockets.” In her teenage years the national economy crashed, necessitating a family relocation to the UK, and she began learning the skill of “not belonging.” Architecture studies proved alienating so she found a way to combine them with her love of fashion (to the consternation of her professors.) Rejecting the prescribed path of a professional architect, she instead pursued a postgraduate program in Material Futures that set her on a path of designing with bacteria. Now, she's founded Faber Futures, a biodesign studio, and Normal Phenomena of Life, an artful lifestyle and fashion brand that also functions as a working prototype of a new model bioeconomy. She's spent her whole life quietly not doing what was expected of her, and in this space of outsiderness she's been very busy creating new paradigms for how we might collaborate with nature and new models for the equitable stewardship of these new biotechnologies. So, in terms of cultural infrastructure, she is an architect after all!
