If you believe in second chances, Dallas Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan has a story or two he could share. After being relieved of his duties in 2013 by general manager Jim Nill, it's that same GM who has brought back Gulutzan to complete some unfinished business in Dallas.Engaging and insightful, Gulutzan clearly has the vision and sees the end game for a Stars team which has found different ways of falling short in each of the last three springs.Neil and Vic will also touch on some other league news, which includes the passing of a Hall-of-Fame netminder, a playoff salary cap and new fashion statements across the NHL.IN THIS EPISODE:[01:36] - Glen Gulutzan joins Neil and Vic and quickly recognizes the unique opportunity of joining a team that is among the NHL's elite.[02:23] - Gulutzan shares the experience of interviewing for the same job with the same GM who had fired him a dozen years earlier. He goes on to add how many familiar faces have remained with the Stars organization since his first go-round.[06:37] - Given the uniqueness of being re-hired by the GM who fired you, Vic poses to Neil whether he would have been able to do likewise given the the right conditions.[08:19] - Recollections of the ECHL days when Gulutzan was coaching in Las Vegas. While the Golden Knights put on a show now, they'd be hard-pressed to come up with some of the innovations introduced by the Wranglers.[10:45] - With six years behind the Wranglers bench between 2003-2009, Gulutzan shares whether he believed back then that the NHL could survive and thrive in Sin City.[13:07] - Evolving as a head coach through the minors to the NHL.[16:29] - Between his Dallas head coaching stints was a two-year run heading up the Flames. Gulutzan shares the importance of those two seasons leading up taking over the reins in Dallas again. [19:18] - Credited with helping the Edmonton Oilers becoming one of the most fearsome power play units in NHL history, Gulutzan takes over an offensively gifted group which will be less superstar driven and more a product of two very able units.[23:02] - Dallas has fallen in three consecutive Western Finals, the last two to Edmonton with Gulutzan as an assistant. Having played a role in exploiting the Stars in 2025 might be the secret sauce in fixing things come next spring.[25:54] - The top the hockey summit is in Florida. Thoughts on never altering the style of play from October-June.[28:37] - Wrapping up with the pronunciation of Glen's birthplace.[34:36] - News from around the NHL starts with the passing of Canadiens legend Ken Dryden, addressed the business component into the Carey Price trade to San Jose, the upcoming playoff salary cap, some fashion news and the 2025 US Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees. Our Hitchcockian August continues with Michael Powell's 1960 film, Peeping Tom. Credited as one of the films that influenced the slasher genre, Powell's film tells the story of Mark Lewis (Karlheinz Böhm), a lonely London photographer who murders women, capturing their fear on film in hopes of creating his own documentary. Creepy, macabre, and bold, Powell's film was not well received upon its release in 1960, but has won over horror fans in recent decades as an essential work.

'Darren has reached deeply into the very bottom of toilet humour.' 'iiieeeooo.' Humankind has one more chance, a second-last chance, to survive. We are in a lot of trouble if these zany characters are our last hope. Prison Planet accommodates the American crew, safely landing with all dubious passengers intact. An evil warden assumes the role of dictator for the planet's lifers. Crew 7 must escape the clutches of the warden and his hench . . . men/women/other. But who are the real criminals? The House of FILTH. Some still dealing with their own afflictions, the ex-psychiatric patients stumble upon an oasis on a new planet. The 'most powerful organisation in the universe' does not take kindly to strangers. In another world, on the isolated island of Retro-Tech, who or what is the unknown entity that has seized control? Climb aboard the realm-hopping transport with Arros Sole to get to the bottom of it. Born Darren Edward Watling, Subiaco, Western Australia, 1966. Darren excelled in English, maintaining ‘A's, throughout his schooling and wrote a play, ‘Laughing Gas', for his school at the age of 10. Credited with a few small, published articles, Darren found inspiration and reward, arriving at his latest piece, ‘2nd Last Chance'. He completed an apprenticeship, as a fitter, at Princess Margaret Hospital, while continuing his passion for short story writing. Travelling Australia for three years on a private bus gave Darren a beginning to the experiences and continued, humorous outlook he has on life. Darren approached Jill Stubbs Mills and asked for her blessing to take her short story, ‘Deception', and rewrite it into a novel. (The feedback from Fremantle Press about her story was exceptional). Jill agreed to her son's request. Sadly, Jill now suffers with dementia, but, laughably, keeps her sense of humour. Various forms of employment, including a movie extra, a welder on a crocodile farm, a drummer for a touring band and currently a roof plumber, gave Darren considerable, ‘fuel', for a comedic novel. Darren has had several passions over the past 50 odd years while walking this Earth. Drums, Karate, Tennis and continuing today- comedic writing. You can learn more about Darren E. Watling and his books on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/darren.watling.37/ and Instagram at  https://www.instagram.com/darren.e.watling/ TOPICS OF CONVERSATION Humor and Satire: Using comedy to critique society and shape characters. Character Inspirations: Creating exaggerated characters with real-world influences. Worldbuilding: Crafting absurd settings like Prison Planet and House of Filth. Writing Process: From adapting a short story to surprising plot twists. Audience and Reception: Targeting older readers and reactions to dark humor. What's next for Darren Watling?

This week we're back to talk about one of the most (unfairly)maligned sequels of the 80s. Facing strong headwinds on the road to getting made, Ghostbusters 2 was criticized as a carbon copy of the first, and it struggled to capture even half of the box office of the 1984 classic as Batman fever swept the nation, and sequels from Back to the Future and Indiana Jones took up moviegoers attention. Credited for "killing the franchise" for decades, Ghostbusters 2 is a solid example of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" filmmaking, and this week Mike, Devaughn and Jessica are on hand to weigh its pros and cons. Every time I hear the opening guitar growl, it's obvious where Black Sabbath got the inspiration for the similar opening growl to "Iron Man." Now in the Classic 45's jukebox, cause it's one of those nuggets that just doesn't get played often enough. The big mystery to me is why Dave Marsh left it off his list of the 1,001 greatest 45s of Rock'n'Soul. It would definitely be on my list (if I ever make one!) For one thing, this is a single that was not included on any contemporary Animals album ? this was a previously unreleased, non-LP single. The two sides eventually got added to an Animals compilation CD, but you won't find them anywhere on vinyl (to my knowledge) except on this little 45 record. (And may I say how incredible the audio is? Stunning doesn't come close!) Note: This beautiful copy has a drillhole and comes in a vintage MGM Records factory sleeve. The vinyl has some notable scuffs, particularly on the B side, grading a strong EX. Miraculously, the audio comes through clean Near Mint with just a touch of surface noise here and there. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jerry Mitchell. Credited with helping to put four Klu Klux Klan members and a serial killer into greater confinement, Mitchell was awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. Mitchell, who's a White Man, authored the book Race Against Time, which examines the history of White Terrorist violence in the “magnolia state” - much of it involving Race Soldiers who successfully evaded prosecution for killing black people. We'll examine Mitchell's coverage of more recent Terrorist violence in the state. The 2011 lynching of James Craig Anderson, who was killed by a mob of young White teens who went hunting for a black person to kill. Last year, Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker were sexually terrorized by the local “Goon Squad.” The “goons” made the black males shower together, doused them with chocolate sauce, and attempted to use a dildo on the two. We'll highlight the family connection between these two incidents, Deryl Dedmon murdered Anderson, Christian Dedmon is a convicted “goon,” and emphasize that White ignorance fails to explain this generational pattern of White Supremacist violence. We even made time for a word on the welfare queen Brett Favre, accused of stealing TANF funds with the help of his White cronies, and the late Carolyn Bryant Donham, who lived a long life of White Supremacy and lies while evading prosecution for her role in the lynching of Emmett L. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. This week, we look at the extraordinary life and career of the talented THERESA HARRIS.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Theresa Harris, Credited and Uncredited in Over 100 Films,” March 28, 2024, by Herb Boyd, New York Amsterdam News; “Just a Maid in Movies, But Not Forgotten,” April 21, 2011, by Manohla Dargis, The New York Times; “The Underrated Charms of Theresa Harris,” July 11, 2020, by Constance Cherise, TCM.com; “Theresa Harris: Television and Film Actress of the 1930s,” August 18, 2023, by Jae Jones, BackThen.com; “Actress Theresa Harris Hollywood Vixen Turned Servant,”September 2, 2011, by Veronica Wells, Madamenoire; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Thunderbolt (1929), starring Fay Wray and George Brent; Hold Your Man (1932), starring Jean Harlow and Clark Gable; Baby Face (1933), starring Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent; Professional Sweetheart (1933), starring Ginger Rogers, Norman Foster, and Zasu Pitts; Horse Feathers (1932), starring The Marx Brothers and Thelma Todd; Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), starring Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, and Ginger Rogers; Morning Glory (1933), starring Katharine Hepburn and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr; Flying Down to Rio (1933), starring Delores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Ginger Rogers, and Fred Astaire; Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935), starring Jack Benny and Eleanor Powell; Banjo On My Knee (1936), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea; Bargain With Bullets (aka The Gangster's On The Loose) (1937), starring Ralph Cooper and Theresa Harris; Jezebel (1938), starring Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, and George Brent; Tell No Tales (1939), starring Melvyn Douglas and Louise Platt; Buck Benny Rides Again (1940), starring Jack Benny, Ellen Drew, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, and Theresa Harris; What's Buzzin' Cousin? Credited with popularizing the label "ex-wife" in 1929, Ursula Parrott wrote provocatively about divorcées, career women, single mothers, work-life balance, and a host of new challenges facing modern women. Her best sellers, Hollywood film deals, marriages and divorces, and run-ins with the law made her a household name. Part biography, part cultural history, Becoming the Ex-Wife: The Unconventional Life and Forgotten Writings of Ursula Parrott (U California Press, 2024) establishes Parrott's rightful place in twentieth-century American culture, uncovering her neglected work and keen insights into American women's lives during a period of immense social change. Although she was frequently dismissed as a "woman's writer," reading Parrott's writing today makes it clear that she was a trenchant philosopher of modernity—her work was prescient, anticipating issues not widely raised until decades after her decline into obscurity. With elegant wit and a deft command of the archive, Marsha Gordon tells a timely story about the life of a woman on the front lines of a culture war that is still raging today. Now, as co-founder and Executive Director of Kinfolk Foundation, he's harnessing augmented reality, location-based technology, and community to engage in placing digital monuments in public spaces, memory building, and foregrounding the Black, Brown and Queer histories that have been intentionally silenced. Always knowing he'd be an artist, he studied Industrial Design and Architecture, and instinctively flexed his ability to seize every opportunity, as well as create them from scratch. Now, as the founder & principal of Marc Thorpe Design, a multidisciplinary studio, and (along with Claire Pijoulat) Edifice Upstate, a design & build architecture agency, he's worked with world-renowned designers, led groundbreaking projects, and is leading the charge toward more responsible architecture. Natsai Audrey Chieza spent her youth in Zimbabwe in a close-knit extended family where she and her cousins were “in each others' pockets.” In her teenage years the national economy crashed, necessitating a family relocation to the UK, and she began learning the skill of “not belonging.” Architecture studies proved alienating so she found a way to combine them with her love of fashion (to the consternation of her professors.) Rejecting the prescribed path of a professional architect, she instead pursued a postgraduate program in Material Futures that set her on a path of designing with bacteria. Now, she's founded Faber Futures, a biodesign studio, and Normal Phenomena of Life, an artful lifestyle and fashion brand that also functions as a working prototype of a new model bioeconomy. She's spent her whole life quietly not doing what was expected of her, and in this space of outsiderness she's been very busy creating new paradigms for how we might collaborate with nature and new models for the equitable stewardship of these new biotechnologies. So, in terms of cultural infrastructure, she is an architect after all!
