― Robert E. I've been a fan of sci-fi for decades, and very much appreciate the quality of the golden age writers. What sets this podcast apart is that the curator and narrator has a perfect discerning eye for the really good stuff--by which I mean his tastes match mine... This is a podcast to cherish.” Thanks for your excellent review nospammers2010!Today marks the debut on the podcast of a man who made his mark on the world in a short 30 years. Robert E. Howard was born in Peaster, Texas in 1906. Over the next 11 years young Robert would live in 10 Texas towns. He started writing stories at the age of 9. Sold his first story for $16 to Weird Tales magazine when he was 19.Howard would most likely be forgotten except for diehard sci-fi fans if not for three characters he created that live on to this day. Arnold Schwarzenegger's breakthrough film was the sword and sorcery epic Conan the Barbarian in 1982. The movie was based on the character Robert E. Howard created in a series of short stories half a century earlier. Before Conan, Howard created Kull the Conqueror, which also appeared on the big screen starring Kevin Sorbo in 1997. And his creative universe also included Solomon Kane, you guessed it, it too got the Hollywood treatment in 2009 starring James Purefoy. He wrote more than 70 short stories with most of them published in Weird Tales magazine. Today's horrifying tale can be found in the February 1930 issue of Weird Tales on page 269, The Fearsome Touch of Death by Robert E. ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) was an influential American author primarily known for his contributions to the genres of fantasy, horror, and adventure fiction. He is best remembered as the creator of Conan the Barbarian, a character who has become an iconic figure in popular culture. Born in Peaster, Texas, Howard demonstrated a keen interest in storytelling from a young age. He began writing fiction in his teens, and by his early twenties, he had already begun to make a name for himself in the pulp magazine market. Howard's stories were published in a variety of popular magazines of the time, including "Weird Tales," "Strange Tales," and "Fight Stories." Howard's most famous creation, Conan the Barbarian, first appeared in the story "The Phoenix on the Sword," published in "Weird Tales" in 1932. Conan, a fierce and cunning warrior from the fictional Hyborian Age, quickly captivated readers with his adventures in a world filled with sorcery, monsters, and intrigue. The character's popularity endured long after Howard's death and has inspired countless adaptations in various media, including books, comics, films, and video games. In addition to Conan, Howard created numerous other memorable characters and settings, such as Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, and the mythical land of Hyperborea. His writing style was characterized by vivid descriptions, fast-paced action, and a knack for creating atmospheric settings. Tragically, Howard's life was cut short when he took his own life at the age of 30. The reasons behind his suicide remain the subject of speculation, but it is widely believed that personal struggles, including his mother's failing health and financial difficulties, contributed to his decision. Despite his untimely death, Robert E. Howard's legacy endures through his influential body of work. His stories continue to entertain and inspire readers, and his impact on the fantasy genre remains profound, cementing his place as one of the most significant writers of speculative fiction in the 20th century. Locals Questions - November 2023Hello Stefan. Ive recently become fascinated with the life and death of writer Robert E Howard (the creator of Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane and other such characters). He was a very talented writer but had a very troubled relationship with his parents, especially his mom, which led him to take his own life at the age of thirty. This inner pain seemed to have fueled his creativety and as an aspiring author myself I wonder, how can that inner darkness best be harnessed for that task?I recently got heat in the instagram's crunchy home birth community after saying it's wrong to make little children watch while their mom is butt naked giving birth to her baby. I personally think all kinds of nakedness and sexual energy should be kept away from kids, but the women started opposing me saying things like "then why are the kids looking so happy watching it?" or "why would it be traumatising? That's where the kids came out themselves too?" and "we should normalise birthing for kids so they're not afraid to have kids themselves" under a video of a 3-year-old staring his moms butt and streched out bloody vaginaIn a recent episode you referenced your “complicated relationship” with the word “selfish.” In my youth I stood by the Objectivist definition as completely positive- the pursuit of rational long-term self-interest. But life experience made me back away from that, because selfish people are so difficult to have relationships with. I never reassessed my definition of the word- but have you arrived at some all-encompassing definition of what it means to be selfish?Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Get my new series on the Truth About the French Revolution, access to the audiobook for my new book 'Peaceful Parenting,' StefBOT-AI, private livestreams, premium call in shows, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2022

In this Patron's Choice episode, we're venturing into the territory of sword and sorcery master Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane (2009), M. J. Bassett's largely forgotten action adventure film starring James Purefoy as the brutal privateer turned Puritan avenger on a quest to rescue a young pilgrim girl from an evil sorcerer. This one vanished without a trace after a bungled release in the US, where it was held up by legal issues, so few genre fans had a chance to witness its glorious locations, gritty tone, bone crunching action and stunning stunts on the big screen. But does it stand the test of time, or is it an unremarkable addition to the post-Lord-of-the-Rings high fantasy boom of the noughties? Find out!
