In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) was an influential American author primarily known for his contributions to the genres of fantasy, horror, and adventure fiction. He is best remembered as the creator of Conan the Barbarian, a character who has become an iconic figure in popular culture. Born in Peaster, Texas, Howard demonstrated a keen interest in storytelling from a young age. He began writing fiction in his teens, and by his early twenties, he had already begun to make a name for himself in the pulp magazine market. Ive recently become fascinated with the life and death of writer Robert E Howard (the creator of Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane and other such characters).He was a very talented writer but had a very troubled relationship with his parents, especially his mom, which led him to take his own life at the age of thirty.This inner pain seemed to have fueled his creativety and as an aspiring author myself I wonder, how can that inner darkness best be harnessed for that task?I recently got heat in the instagram's crunchy home birth community after saying it's wrong to make little children watch while their mom is butt naked giving birth to her baby. I personally think all kinds of nakedness and sexual energy should be kept away from kids, but the women started opposing me saying things like "then why are the kids looking so happy watching it?" or "why would it be traumatising? That's where the kids came out themselves too?" and "we should normalise birthing for kids so they're not afraid to have kids themselves" under a video of a 3-year-old staring his moms butt and streched out bloody vaginaIn a recent episode you referenced your “complicated relationship” with the word “selfish.” In my youth I stood by the Objectivist definition as completely positive- the pursuit of rational long-term self-interest.
