Miskatonic University Podcast | Interviews, actual play, and discussion about Call of Cthulhu and other horror and Lovecraft

This episode, Keepers Bridgett & Evan welcome back Heinrich Moore to discuss collaborative RPG projects, such as scenarios and anthologies. Patreon Plug & Update Did you know that crowdfunding is a collaborative way to support your favorite podcast? We have a Patreon, through which you can support us! You can directly support the show, and our surrounding community, by becoming a Patron!  That's right! You can head over to patreon.com/MUP to subscribe. For as little as two bucks a month you can help us pay our editors, pay for web hosting, and pay for my therapy when I have to deal with technical issues on the web hosting.  And listen, if monetary support isn't possible, might I remind you that the black market rates for a gently used kidney are very attractive right now?  Evan, no. No, we are not having our listeners sell a kidney to support the show, because you know they would. I didn't say it had to be *their* kidney! But… fine. If we can't get some of that sweet, sweet black market organ money, I guess we'll have to sell space to advertisers, like this one! [Heinrich: Obed's Seafood thinks you shouldn't have to settle for soggy, bland fish sticks, fish filets and crab cakes. Your family deserves only the best, so why not give them the seafood that's harvested from our own hidden fishery in New England, reef-caught and fresh-frozen. How do we attract such fantastic fish? That's Obed's secret!  From our boats to your table, Obed's Seafood stays crispy and tasty. Ask for Obed's in your grocer's seafood aisle. – A division of Marsh Family Industries.] And if you would like to create a mythos or horror-related ad for us to read, please visit the Patreon Chat on our Discord.  The Discord Plug Yes, MUP has a Discord and we are all there! We invite all of our listeners to come and enjoy the community of horror gaming and cute pet pics. Link in the show notes: MU Discord server invite link: https://discord.gg/vNjEv9D  And thank you to our editor GENE for editing this episode.  Main Topic  Welcome everyone to the Main Topic! Tonight we are discussing collaborative RPG projects, such as scenarios and anthologies. And we have with us, fresh off masterminding the phenomenally successful Year of the Goat anthology… HEINRICH MOORE! Heinrich, you've been with us on MUP before, for a special episode where we played through your Guide to Character Creation. But for those few folks who don't know you yet, tell us who you are! [Heinrich does so] Year of the Goat was an anthology of 12 scenarios, by 12 different authors, and in bringing it to life, Heinrich and I learned a LOT. We want to pass those lessons on to the listeners, both to encourage you to try putting together your own collaborative projects, and to help you get over some of the barriers. Level-set: What is a Collaborative Project? Why do it? A written project where two or more people are contributing text, editing, art, or other skills and content. It can have one or two people leading the project, or be a collaboration of equals Some critical tools and tips for doing this well: Clear Concept Concept paper Topics – what's in scope and not Any content restrictions Clear format and requirements Templates Style guide Word Count Clear roles and responsibilities Writing Editing (different kinds) – who has final say over text? Art (including providing inspiration or public domain art) Marketing (including promos, submitting for nominations, making videos, sending to reviewers) Deadlines and contingencies Payment split – ideally, decide on this BEFORE ANYONE DOES WORK  Homework Dear listener, tell us – have you led a collaborative writing project for Call of Cthulhu or another system? Have you been part of one? How did it go, and how could it have gone better? Come to the Discord, channel ep-357, and share what you've learned!

Can Sherlock Holmes follow the trail of a culprit 28 hours ahead of him? Arthur Conan Doyle, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.   Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast, where an audiobook approach delivers an immersive experience in classic literature. I'm your host BJ Harrison.  I'm glad you could join us.   Unlimited everything. With a monthly donation of $9.99 or more, that's what you get. Unlimited access to everything I've recorded for the last 19 years. These are the same titles found on Audible, Spotify, and elsewhere. They already have thousands of five-star ratings. Many have won awards. And you can download all you want. No limits.   And it all directly supports the show. The guy who does all the work. That'd be me.   Go to classictalesaudiobooks.com today and choose the best way to support the show. Thank you so much.     Okay, so we have a little housekeeping to attend to. First of all, if you'd like to see a live recording of Jeeves and the Dog MacIntosh, by P.G. Wodehouse, you can. I'll be performing The Classic Tales Podcast live at the FanX Convention (formerly Salt Lake ComicCon). I'll also be one of four narrators performing The Call of Cthulhu live, as well as Asleep in Armageddon, by Ray Bradbury. So if you're in the area, and are planning on attending, please come and say hi.   There's also a super fun interview I had with Heather Ordover from CraftLit, the annotated audiobook podcast, that you can check out. Her podcast turns 20 this year, and since many of her listeners have heard my work, since she's used some of my recordings in her show, she was gracious enough to have a chat with me. If you wonder why I do this, or what my story is, it's a great snapshot of lil' ol' me. A link to the interview can be found in the show notes.   Also, today we have an instance of an author using racism as a cheap device to create a villain. Yeah, it's pretty gross. For the record, any time you say, "everyone who looks like this, or comes from here, or thinks like this – they're all the same", yeah, that's a problem. Unfortunately, many Victorian authors use this and various forms of racism as a cheap shortcut. Just wanted to give you a heads up.     And now, The Sign of the Four, Part 3 of 5, by Arthur Conan Doyle   Follow this link to get The Audiobook Library Card for a special price of $9.99/month   Follow this link to hear the interview with BJ and Heather Ordover from CraftLit   Follow this link and get Multiple Licenses for The Audiobook Library Card   Follow this link and watch the new video walkthrough using PocketBook.       Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:       Follow this link to subscribe to the Arsène Lupin Podcast:     Follow this link to follow us on Instagram:     Follow this link to follow us on Facebook:

Horror Joy: Meet Your Maker with Kailee PedersenBrian interviews horror writer and opera singer Kailee Pedersen on Meet Your Maker about the relationship between horror and joy, which Pedersen links to the genre's transgressive freedom, including psychological unsettlement and marginalized protagonists. Pedersen discusses her writing origins (starting seriously at 13, early Neopets fan fiction, and supportive teachers), her path from poetry and creative nonfiction to novels, and how horror “found” her through an interest in uncomfortable, suppressed aspects of human psychology. They talk about her books Pastorale, Sacrificial Animals, and The Minimalist, including how The Minimalist draws heavily from real experiences in classical music: pressure, failure, mental health, suicide, racialization, antisemitism, and homophobia. They explore trauma-based “haunting,” genre as marketing, first-person narration, prepared piano references, and Pedersen's current horror joy in playing Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPGs.Pre-order Kailee's book, The Minimalist, which is out August 18th on St. Martin's Press.https://kaileepedersen.com/the-minimalist/

...or ‘Where Pagan Meets Pagan' In which this league of extraordinary ladies and gentlemen perform unquestionably extraordinary actions. The Company of the Light uses the Vaesen roleplaying system, by Free League Publishing and based an original concept by Johan Egerkrans. The mystery at the heart of the scenario is taken from Mythic Britain and Ireland by Graeme Davis. The name of that scenario (which may contain a mild spoiler) can be found below the music section of these notes. You can hear a short prologue to The Company of the Light on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/blomqvist-01-ho-153999494 Cast: Lieutenant William Fellwood — Joseph Chance Bab Chase — Dominic Allen Siobhan Strong — Danann McAleer Bridge Ebden — Lucy Farrett Narrator — Dan Wheeler CW: This podcast contains mature themes, strong language and cosmic horror. (MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW): The mystery at the heart of this story is premised upon the disappearance and death of a young woman. However, with the exception of one moment (which I will flag when it arrives), this is not dwelt on in any great detail, and please note for avoidance of doubt this is NOT sexual violence or self-harm. Human discretion is advised. The Apocalypse Players is an actual play (or live play) TTRPG podcast focused on horror tabletop roleplaying games. Think Dimension 20 or Critical Role, but fewer dragons, more eldritch horrors, and more British actors taking their roleplaying very seriously (most of the time). On this episode of the Epic Realms Podcast, we're joined by author, game designer, and RPG historian Shannon Appelcline for an in-depth conversation about his life, career, and passion for tabletop roleplaying games. Shannon shares how his journey into Dungeons & Dragons began after spotting an advertisement in a comic book, convincing his father to buy the game, and diving into the rulebooks before running his very first adventure. From growing up alongside D&D and discovering a love of writing at an early age to earning a computer science degree that proved valuable mainly for its access to libraries and the early internet, Shannon reflects on the experiences that shaped his career. We explore his path through the tabletop RPG industry, from cataloging every issue of Dragon Magazine to writing for roleplaying games and serving as the longtime steward of RPG.net. Shannon also takes us behind the scenes of his landmark Designers & Dragons series, discussing the years of research that went into documenting the history of the RPG industry and why it's so important to preserve the stories of the countless creators whose contributions often go unnoticed. The conversation also covers his latest project, Designers & Dragons: Origins, fresh from a successful BackerKit campaign, where he continues to uncover the roots of the hobby. Along the way, we discuss his meticulous research process, the influential figures who helped shape tabletop gaming, and the importance of giving credit to the many people who built the industry behind the scenes. Finally, Shannon gives us a look at what's next, including his upcoming work for Call of Cthulhu, his Losing Sanity project, and his exciting Free Trader Beowulf project. Whether you're a lifelong tabletop gamer, a student of RPG history, or simply fascinated by the people behind the games we love, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Ari Bowie is an editor and proofreader with Fox and Boar Games, now lending a hand in outreach and managing the company Discord. She has worked on a number of projects, including TrashSexy, 100 Ways, and ShadowWest. Despite being easily spooked, she has found herself working on several horror themed projects. Fox and Boar Games is the tabletop publication company run by John R Harford – writer, artist and game content developer of over 30 years. Above all of his other pursuits – creating worlds for players has been John's  lifelong passion. He's been running games from an early age in 1983. He immediately began drawing on the existing worlds for emerging games like DragonQuest, Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, MERP and Gamma World to create his own scenarios and settings. His most current works leans into horror and dark fantasy in quasi-historical settings. Even when working in high fantasy or adjacent settings, John draws deeply on real world research to make his settings come alive. John is also a tenured professor who teaches (among other things) game narrative and tabletop system design at Raritan Valley Community College. His GMing style is narrative, fluid and employs immersive audio, visuals and narrative prose. Find out where Fox and Boar Games is going to be exhibiting or attending to get in on one of his games!
