161: Adam Ferrier on why listening to your customers can be bad for your brand

This week we have been exclusively watching 'Magic Mike', shaking a Magic 8-Ball and listening to '24k Magic' by Bruno Mars (which is just awful) in order to win the slightly nervous attention of Adam Ferrier, founder of Thinkerbell; the thinkers, tinkers and practitioners of ‘measured magic'.  A psychology brain sat on top of some sturdy strategy bones, Adam is a rare voice of reason in the largely barmy brand world – as well as being the chief sceptic when it comes to the industry obsession with ‘the customer'. He's also the author of more superb books, including ‘The Advertising effect: How to Change Behaviour' and supplements all this talk-talking with some serious walk-walking through his work that brings marketing science and creative thinking together.  In this episode Adam shares his expertise on brands who forget how to be brands, why every business problem is a behaviour change problem and the forgotten benefits of simply fitting in. This episode is very proudly dedicated to Anne Young.    /////    Follow Adam on LinkedIn Timestamps 09:16 - The impact of D&AD annuals on Adam's career choice 11:19 - Transition from forensic psychology to marketing 16:12 - The perils of customer obsession 22:57 - Balancing brand and customer needs 25:11 - The importance of consumer research Adam's Book Recommendations are: Stop Listening to Your Customers by Adam Ferrier: The Advertising Effect: How to Change Behaviour by Adam Ferrier:  Love's Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy by Irvin Yalom:  Existential Psychotherapy by Irvin Yalom:  Here and Now: Tales from the Heart  by Irvin Yalom:  /////

Joe E. Meisel is a biologist, a conservationist, and an educator. He is a cofounder of the Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation. We spoke to Joe about the fascinating behaviors, remarkable adaptations, and complex life histories of the many species of saltwater fishes, some of the present-day and historical connections between humans and the sea, and why despite the many challenges our oceans face, there's reason to be optimistic about the future of our oceans and fishes.

Come to... Pod-dy? We're straining for puns over here, but we've got a fun remote-recorded episode today, featuring the return of author and podcaster Garon Cockrell (Demonic and Other Tales). It's a follow-up to last year's Nightbreed episode, in which Tyler voiced his dislike for body horror. For being such a good sport, we reward him with more Clive Barker: the 1987 film Hellraiser, directed by Barker and adapted from his own novella, The Hellbound Heart. There are discussions of the story's psychosexual dynamics and hazy mythology, plus a bit about the sequels and remakes.   Hosted by Allan Traylor, Tyler Austin, and Justin Remer. Produced by Justin Remer. (sorry about the mixed-bag sound) Recorded remotely via Zencastr.  Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental) by Duck the Piano Wire.  Closing music: "Rule of 3s (Solemnity Child)" by Elastic No-No Band.

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2024 58:02

The Shuttered Room and Other Tales of Terror). Ambrose comienza a investigar. The Shadow in the Attic). My guest for this episode is author and podcaster Thersa Matsuura, who joined me to talk about her new publication, The Book of Japanese Folklore: An Encyclopedia of the Spirits, Monsters, and Yokai of Japanese Myth. After a childhood living all over the U.S. - as far north as Fairbanks, Alaska and as far south as Jacksonville, Florida, Thersa moved to Japan to study. She would eventually settle there and has now lived over half her life in a fishing town in the country. Her fluency in Japanese allows her to do research into parts of the culture - legends, folktales, and superstitions - that are little known to western audiences. A lot of what she digs up informs her writing or becomes fodder for her podcast, Uncanny Japan. Thersa is the author of two short story collections, A Robe of Feathers and Other Stories and The Carp-Faced Boy and Other Tales, the latter being a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award in 2017. She's had stories published in various magazines, anthologies and serialized in the Asahi English Newspaper. I begin the interview by talking with Thersa about the events that initially took her to Japan and what those early experiences of living in a new country were like. We also discuss the cultural history of the country and how that has influenced and is expressed in the relationship between it's people, the natural world and the supernatural. From there we focus on Thersa's new book itself, exploring some of the beings that are featured in it, which range from mythical versions of historical figures, through to supernatural foxes and wolves, giant spiders and full on Lovecraftian horrors. We round off things talking about ghosts and Thersa shares some of her own uncanny experiences. You can find out more about Thersa, her writing and podcast at her website https://thersamatsuura.com/.
