As meditation can be another way of using our internal faculties, this technique introduces the concept that our preferred major representational systems or modalities (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic referred to as V.A.K, learning styles) can influence our preferred meditation techniques. This can be useful if we struggle with the art of meditation.
Witnessing meditation, or insight meditation, allows you to have awareness of external influences during practice, without associating positive or negative thoughts to them, to help calm and still the mind.
This 20 minute mindfulness session helps to calm the mind and prepare yourself for sleep, by processing and letting go of the days’ events.
This short meditation introduces the concept of affirmations. The act of affirming is the assertion that something exists or is true. When repeating our affirmations in the state of meditation, we sow seeds into the unconscious mind where they germinate and grow. Affirmations are positive statements that we repeat to ourselves mentally or verbally to bring about a positive change.

This seminar by Dr Katie Dow analyses how the contemporary British media represented this event, focusing on Louise’s parents, Lesley and John Brown, a working-class married couple in their thirties. It will describe and analyse how the contemporary British media represented Lesley and John Brown, who came to be seen as deserving parents of the world’s first IVF baby and to stand as ciphers for a presumed universal, natural desire to have a child ‘of one’s own’.
This CISC Seminar explores the notion of ‘media-bodies’ and shows how Kim Kardashian-West’s vulva discursively and corporally demonstrates a cultural compulsion wherein skin must ‘speak’ its owner’s beauty, and where the appearances of bodies on screens are equally if not more important than their capacities as feeling, touching, mobile objects.
The CISC Seminar entitled ‘Sex in the village: Undisciplined daughters, subversive sexualities and intimate life in Sri Lanka’, by Dr Sandya Hewamanne took place on 14 October 2015. Showing how political and economic changes initiate struggles over meanings on intimacy, love, sex and marriage, the seminar discussed how desire, intimacy, sex and pleasure are locally specific, classed and are fluid over a person’s life trajectory.
