In 1994, Daragh Mahon won the green card lottery and moved from Ireland to Atlanta. His first American job was driving an eighteen-wheeler for Schneider. Thirty years later, he runs IT for Werner Enterprises, one of the largest trucking companies in North America, with 12,000 drivers moving freight across the country every day.In this episode of Kill Chain, host Terry Reinert sits down with Daragh to unpack a career arc most CIOs never take and a perspective on cybersecurity, AI, and the future of transportation that most haven't earned. What you'll hear:Why Daragh asked every autonomous trucking company the same security question and never got an answerThe 3 critical infrastructure sectors a foreign adversary attacks first (and why transportation is on the list)Why he wants the tech industry to "stop talking about AI"The AI backlash brewing in colleges that CIOs aren't trackingThe story of signing a contract he had no authority to sign and getting 12 months to make it workWhy real innovation only happens at the startup level, and what the big software companies stopped doingBuilding security into corporate DNA instead of bolting it onThe Werner Accelerator and why every corporation should run onePredictions for the next ten years (and why he refuses to make them)About the guest:Daragh Mahon is the EVP and CIO of Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ: WERN). Today on the podcast I am joined by Chris and Daragh of the UK Crossover Metal band, Inhuman Nature!Inhuman Nature are a force of unfathomable power. Having spent months roaming the endless highways of the UK and Europe, these road warriors have spent the last 5 years sharpening their steel and becoming a formidable live force. Having toured with such diverse and heavy hitting allies as Crowbar, Green Lung, Heriot, High Command, Grove Street, Puppy, as well as festival appearances at the likes of Bloodstock, Mystic Festival, Damnation and 2000 Trees, among many others. With their new album Greater Than Death still ringing in everyone's ears, these servants of aural annihilation will bring their singular attack, which harnesses the classic crossover sound of their debut LP, and incorporates a melange of extremity, with influences from hardcore to crust, death and doom metal. I'll be going chatting with the lads about all things Metal, going through their latest album 'Greater Than Death' and of course be talking their upcoming Irish tour, which begins next week in Limerick!Inhuman Nature in LimerickInhuman Nature in CorkInhuman Nature in DublinInhuman Nature in Belfast Hosted on Acast. Yesterday we heard from the Government in its Spring economy Forecast that Ireland is likely to avoid a recession even in the event of a prolonged fuel crisis in the middle east. That chimes with estimates from KPMG which says that Ireland will outperform many of its European peers amid this energy shock. Worryingly for house hunters, it expects rising ECB interest rates will add €1,200 to the average first time buyer annual repayments. All to discuss with Daragh McGreal, is chief economist with KPMG.
In Episode 3, of Season 7 of Driven by Data: The Podcast, Kyle Winterbottom was joined by Daragh Kelly, Chief Data Officer at The Economist, where they discuss why most AI initiatives are still failing, why there's not much measurable progress and how insight functions have become toolmakers and decision intelligence partners, which includes; Why most AI initiatives fail because they as a solution looking for problems. The importance of aligning AI use cases to strategic goals, KPIs and measurable outcomes. Why speed rather than velocity leads to very little measurable progress. Why compelling POCs create false confidence before the real production challenges begin. The deployment gap: why robust, scalable and commercially viable AI is still hard. Why disconnected tools and poor workflow integration stall AI value realisation. The simple test for prioritisation: is this problem big enough to matter? Why the best AI use cases act as building blocks for future capability. How AI and UX together are driving true self-service insight generation. Why insight teams are evolving from answer providers to toolmakers. The growing importance of data governance, quality and observability in an AI-first world. How distributed insight creation can weaken corporate memory and knowledge curation. The skills shift toward UX, enablement, storytelling and decision intelligence.Practical build vs buy criteria in fast-moving and rapidly commoditising AI markets. Why operating models matters less than discipline, purpose and capability building.

Daragh Cronin is 40 days into his solo cycling expedition from Ireland to Everest Base Camp, and I sent him four questions via Instagram to find out how it's actually going. He talks about the send-off from Cork that genuinely blew his mind, how it compared to the low-key departure for his West Africa ride, and why the first two weeks on the bike were so much harder than he expected. He gets into the reality of solo wildcamping for the first time, hitting big milestones across Europe, and a very special stop in Germany to see the man he cycled more than half of Africa with.Daragh's route to Everest Base Camp is also currently under a cloud with the war that's broken out in Iran putting his planned route through Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman into doubt. Endurance Adventurer, Daragh Morgan from Dublin recently completed one of the most extraordinary challenges ever undertaken on Irish shores, a gruelling 1,468 kilometre swim around the entire coastline of Ireland, a dream that took six years from conception to delivery and 338 hours in the water to complete. Swimming an average of four hours a day, often in harsh, unforgiving conditions, Daragh carved a path through jellyfish, relentless chafing, and the wild moods of the Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea to complete his 'North Star' Challenge, Swim Éire. This expedition however was never a solo endeavour. At its heart was a dedicated support crew, led by boat captain Dara Bailey, whose seamanship, insight and unwavering presence kept the ambitious 27 years old swimmer safe and steadily moving forward. Together, their journey became a celebration of community, tradition and the deep cultural ties that connect Ireland's coastal communities to the waters that surround them. In this episode, Daragh reflects on the physical and mental resilience needed to push through tough conditions, the key moments that shaped the expedition, and the sense of purpose he found in the water. He discusses past endurance challenges that prepared him, the unconventional fuelling strategies that sustained him and the emotional homecoming that closed this monumental chapter. This is a story of courage, coastline and community and of the magic that unfolds when a daunting, unpredictable idea pulls you far beyond your comfort zone and grows into something far greater than you ever imagined. More than a tale of endurance, it is a testament to the human spirit and the unshakeable power of self-belief. Swim Éire stands as a bright beacon proving that with vision, determination and teamwork, even the most formidable challenges can be overcome.

A prominent Clare developer claims government plans to reduce studio apartment sizes will not stimulate housing growth. It comes as Planning Minister John Cummins and Housing Minister James Browne have published new guidelines that would lower the minimum apartment size from 37 to 32 square metres. The coalition claims the plans would increase delivery without compromising disability, fire safety, or environmental requirements. However, Ciarán Breen of Ciarán Breen Construction in Ennis believes the new measure offers no incentives to builders.

Daragh Mahon talks about driving competitive advantage, the importance of cybersecurity, real-time visibility & their 'Cloud First, Cloud Now' strategy. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [04.26] An overview of Werner, what they do, and how they help their customers. “We run all modes of transportation… And we've proven over and over again that we're excellent at every single one of them.” [05.24] Daragh's reflections on the first half of the year, why 2025 is the year of AI, and how Werner's digital transformation journey has positioned them for the future. “The first half of the year has been tough, we're still in this freight recession… There's a lot of volatility, but it does feel like it's leveling out a bit.” [12.22] From demand predictability and labor issues to sustainability and cyber security, the biggest challenges faced by Werner customers, the types of technologies they're looking for to tackle them, and why Werner tech is built around what their customers need most. “You combine all those things, and what you have is a very unpredictable environment. What we have to do… is help level out that playing field and give our customers technology that will help them in all of those places… so that everything is reliable, scalable and secure.” [16.56] Whether data security is being compromised because of increasingly large tech stacks. [20.26] How Werner customers can use their interactive tools to access insights, drive better decision-making and, ultimately, gain a competitive advantage. “Data is more real-time than it's ever been before… And when you give customers real-time access to visibility, that gives them a competitive advantage.” “It's crazy what the supply chain looks like today versus 20 years ago… It's night and day. And the beauty of it is that 20 months from now it will look different, and 20 years from now it will be unrecognizable. That's why I get so excited – especially at the pace we're moving at now.” [27.25] Werner's data access strategy, and how it helps with flexibility, speed, and decision-making support. “I think of data as the great equalizer.” [31.36] The issue of increasing cyber threats and cargo thefts, an overview of Werner's security and safety solutions and how they're protecting what matters most to customers. “You have to think about a cyber attack as ‘when' and not ‘if' – you have to think about how vulnerable you can be, and how you watch and shut down those vulnerabilities.” [36.46] Werner's ‘Cloud First, Cloud Now' strategy, what it means, and how it translates to results for customers. “The tech part is easy. It's the change management that gets really hard.” [40.42] Daragh's key takeaways from today's discussion. Today's guest is no stranger to extremes. Meet Daragh Morgan — adventure athlete, endurance junkie, and open sea swimmer with a serious love for the wild waters around Ireland. From triathlons to 100km ultra runs, Daragh's racked up an awe-inspiring list of challenges: swimming Galway Bay not once, but three times, running from Mizen to Malin — 625 kilometers on foot — and cycling hundreds of kilometers across the country. And that's just scratching the surface. But in Summer 2025, he's taking it to a whole new level. Daragh will attempt the first-ever tidal-assisted stage swim around the entire island of Ireland — a never-before-done feat that could land him in the Guinness World Records.Fueled by a daily dip in the Atlantic and a mission to protect Ireland's oceans, Daragh's story is about grit, purpose, and the power of water to move us — literally and figuratively. The Project is called Swim Ére and you can find more information on www.swimeire.ie

The co-branded credit card space is a mature market. Chase and American Express have large deals with airlines and hotels as well as the likes of Amazon and Disney. These are typically huge programs with not just millions but tens of millions of customers. But what about those Fortune 500 companies that are not big enough for Chase or Amex but still want to do their own co-branded credit card? That is where Imprint comes in.My next guest on the Fintech One-on-One podcast is Daragh Murphy, the CEO and Founder of Imprint. Daragh realized that the bank technology being used to power the co-branded card space was decades old and inflexible. He saw the opportunity to build a new tech stack to provide a much better experience for large brands. And they didn't take any shortcuts to get there. In this podcast you will learn:What first brought Daragh from Ireland to the U.S. and why he stayed here. How he landed on the idea of co-branded credit cards. The hardest part about building a credit card company. How granular they can get with their rewards program. Why Chase and Amex only have a limited number of co-branded programs. The size of company that Imprint is looking to partner with. Why they do no outbound marketing whatsoever. Why a typical billion dollar company shouldn't do a co-branded card program. How they were able to get started when dealing with large enterprises as a startup. How they embed the Imprint technology into their clients' app.The thought process we went through when choosing their bank partner. How long it took them to build their own credit card platform. How they are getting their card to the top of wallet. Why they decided to build a call center themselves. How they have deployed AI into their customer support. What is next for Imprint.Connect with Fintech One-on-One: Tweet me @PeterRenton Connect with me on LinkedIn Find previous Fintech One-on-One episodes
