Smithian & Marxian Star Trek & economics. In the late 18th century, British thinker Adam Smith cemented himself in history as the first true 'economist', developing theories about personal capital that helped define the Industrial Revolution and the Western world's steady march toward a capitalist society. A century later, Karl Marx prescribed a different solution to human capital, one that spawned an entire economic 'religion' that morphed, at different times and different places, into forms of communism and socialism as we approached the age Star Trek was born. By the time the series launched, Smith & Marx's theories had shaped much of the 20th century. In this episode, host Tony Black is joined by Jason Barr, a professor of economics at Rutgers University in Newark, and the writer of an article for StarTrek.com called 'Smith, Marx, and... Picard?: Star Trek and Our Economic Future', which breaks down the key principles of how Smith and Marx influenced so-called 'Trekonomics' and Gene Roddenberry's vision of a future where money does not exist. We expand on his piece, discussing key principles of how Star Trek engages with capitalist ideals. What exactly *is* economics? How does Star Trek exist as a 'post-scarcity' society? And how far are we away from such a future in 2020? It was the proverbial nightmare before and after Christmas for Aston Villa, before a Dean Smith tactical switch against Burnley gave them hope for 2020. Can Villa survive a big triple injury blow though? The January transfer window is now key to their survival.David and Chris are joined by newcomer Phillip Shaw, to take a in-depth look at the Villa goings on over the past few weeks, and examine life after the blow of losing Tom Heaton, Wesley and John McGinn. There's some interesting stats to be discussed that throw-up big questions about Villa's overall performances. We also entertain the 'Smith out' viewpoint, look at other 'soft touch' relegation candidates and discuss how Villa need a change of culture beyond the 1st team.Outside of the Villa-verse, we look at the further expansion of the MLS, Newcastle's attempts to fill empty seats and the Zlatan Ibrahimovic statue incident.Welcome back and we look forward to keeping you entertained through the new year of 2020.To take advantage of the show sponsor Beer 52's offer of a free case of 10 craft beers (all you have to do is pay the £4.95 postage), check out http://bit.ly/Beer52xMOMS for further details.Enjoy the show!UTVSUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in 2020 and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron. Combined into one volume, this is the definitive collection of Tolkien's five acclaimed modern classic 'fairie' tales in the vein of The Hobbit, read by Derek Jacobi. The five tales are written with the same skill, quality and charm that made The Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are joined here in one volume which reaffirms Tolkien's place as a master storyteller for listeners young and old. 'Roverandom' is a toy dog who, enchanted by a sand sorcerer, gets to explore the world and encounter strange and fabulous creatures. 'Farmer Giles of Ham' is fat and unheroic, but - having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant - is called upon to do battle when a dragon comes to town. 'The Adventures of Tom Bombadil' tells in verse of Tom's many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls. 'Leaf by Niggle' recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle, who sets out to paint the perfect tree. 'Smith of Wootton Major' journeys to the Land of Faery thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children. Taken together, this rich collection of work from the author of The Children of Húrin will provide the listener with a fascinating journey into lands as wild and strange as Middle-earth.
New Series, New Companion! This week David and Matt review 'Smith and Jones' the first episode of series three and are introduced to Martha Jones for the first time. This week's questions include 'where is the best place to hide from a Rhino'? whilst the age old question of 'where is the best place to put a shop in a hospital'? may finally have a solution!!! Doctor Who theme by Ron Grainer, arranged by Alexander Erben. Talk to us! Email: timenorspacepod@gmail.com | Twitter: @timenorspacepod
On this episode, my discussion is probably equal parts raves and equal parts rants (I'm not so good at math, but that sounds about right) and overall just A WHOLE LOTTA FEELS. Seriously, this is probably the most shiptastic episode I've ever done (Martha/Doctor is still sort of my OTP), so that shippy aspect could possibly put people off, but, hey, it's how I feel about the episode and Martha's tenure on the show, so I had to just go with it to be authentic. *shrug* Anyway, please won't you join me as I squee about the long-lost 'Doctor Who Confidential' series and also about All Things Martha (because, really, Competency is Sexy!), get nostalgic about the old days of 'Doctor Who' on PBS in North America from my youth, pump my fist in the air for #TeamJulia (it'll make sense once you listen), rant kind of a lot about RTD-style 'Doctor Who' (I know, what a surprise!), and, finally, embarrass myself with a bonus fanmix-song I made ages ago and pulled from the dusty vault of yesteryear in honor of this episode. So, yeah, enjoy the ride!
