This episode, we finally get ourselves started on the Fifth Doctor era as the Master returns (again) to taunt our new Doctor in Castrovalva… heh heh heh… Join us as we discuss just how young Peter Davison was when this was made, whether or not Adric was a little TOO excited at being tied up in the Master's web (or if it's just the harness), Tegan's need for “enormous thrust,” Bidmead's myriad weaknesses, and how the Master THINKS that he's a dom, but is clearly just a brat and all he wants is kisses (because he DESERVES them!)… this might be our most unhinged episode yet, to be honest. The Doctor has been sent to Beyond - for the rest of his natural lives. In the years after a devastating intergalactic war, a prison facility was set up on a distant planet. To preserve the fragile peace, the most dangerous former combatants are sentenced to life in Beyond. Like the notorious Starclair sisters, whose involvement on both sides of the war is the stuff of legend - as well as a certain Time Lord with a reputation for interfering in things that don't concern them. But there's something else on the planet too. Something that adds an infinite variety of agony to a life sentence on Beyond, and makes the inmates wish for the relative comfort of death. Because what's coming to those who stay too long in Beyond is almost too hideous to contemplate. Alive and conscious, deprived of your senses and all movement. Just locked in, alone in a darkness that lasts forever.

To the TARDIS! This week, V and Emily tackle a requested episode about a deeply controversial Doctor Who episode: Earthshock, which aired in 1982, featuring the Fifth Doctor. This episode killed off -- 40-year-old spoilers -- child companion Adric, and we're still seeing the effects of that choice in the writing of the show today. Although as far as it actually affected the Doctor or his other companions... well, that's up for debate. Compared to New Who companion deaths like those of Clara and Bill, Adric's was handled... uh. Well. They made some choices. Who was your favorite Doctor Who companion? Space Precinct actor and Gerry Anderson Podcast host Richard James chooses this Peter Davison story to put under the positive magnifying glass that is Happy Times and Places. Perhaps the most traditional seeming story of the Fifth Doctor's first year, The Visitation seems to have fallen out of favour in recent years. So is it a case of a plague on all four episodes or are the story's good qualities so infectiously good that by the end of it you'll be riddled with positives? #doctorwho #doctorwhoreaction #doctorwhocommentary #doctorwhocomedian #tobyhadoke #doctorwhofacts #positivedoctorwho #classicdoctorwho Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. This week, in an episode recorded prior to the recent, sad passing of writer Barbara Clegg, we look aloft at the Fifth Doctor and chums as they search for Enlightenment. Along the way we consider the role of gods in Doctor Who, reasses the conventional view of Peter Davison's Doctor as "nice" and add another 80s celebrity to our cameo tally. review This title was released in April 2024. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 May 2024, and on general sale after this date. Mysteries come in all shapes and forms. From a small-scale murder to an alien conspiracy. But when they arise the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric are the perfect team to deal with them. The Merfolk Murders by Tim Foley (4 parts) St Andrews, Scotland, 1940. The Merfolk are a university society meeting through the summer to discuss murder mystery stories. Innocent escapism during wartime, they say. Their latest book is The Casebook of Orion Hood - whose hero is all-too-familiar to the Doctor... When a real-life murder occurs soon after their gathering, the Doctor's friends encourage him to investigate. Is one of the Merfolk responsible? Was this crime the result of espionage or envy? The Doctor must embrace his deerstalker once more and solve this wartime mystery - before the killer can strike again! Dream Team by Lizzie Hopley (2 parts) “Welcome to Concordium! The one-stop destination for elite and effective corporate bonding.” A protected wonder of space is being exploited for ‘company away days' but when the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric land to challenge the organisers, they fall into a web of perfectly tailored nightmares. As the Doctor confronts one of the most dangerous monsters in existence, one that uses your own mind against you while it feeds, his companions fall deeper into the trap and a nasty truth is revealed - you can die in dreams. This release comes with a bonus audiobook download: Meanwhile, Turlough by Jonathan Blum. **Please note: the Collectors' Edition CDs are strictly limited to a pressing of just 1,500 copies**
In this latest episode of Too Hot For TV Dylan is joined by Toby Hadoke to discuss two Big Finish stories from recent years. Then they look at the fifth Doctor story 'Pursuit of the Nightjar' written by Tim Foley and starring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa and Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka. And as always they answer the burning questions: How can a blobby mess make you feel any sort of emotion?Who has a space cold? What is this human emotion you call grief?
Ian and Nathan encounter the Cybermen in this classic Fifth Doctor story. Earthshock (1982). Directed by Peter Grimwade. Written by Eric Saward. Produced by John Nathan Turner. Starring Peter Davison, Matthew Waterhouse, Janet Feilding, Sarah Sutton and Beryl Reid.

Forget the Star Beast, the return of David Tennant and that surprise cameo by the Monoids.... probably. It's time for a brand new episode of Too Hot For TV. This time Dylan is joined by Pete Lambert, together they traverse both comics and audios. First up it's the Doctor Who Weekly comic strip 'The Tide of Time' written by Steve Parkhouse with art by Dave Gibbons, featuring the Fifth Doctor. Then it's Sixth Doctor and Charlie Big Finish Audio 'The Condemned' written by Eddie Robson and directed by Nick Briggs. And as always they answer the questions: Who is Peter Davidson?Who had a catalogue of imaginary Doctor Who Toys?Which doctor who monster is not a Twink?
As you may know, every year I offer two episode replays over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. These are always two of my favorite interviews from the year—conversations that stuck with me and are worth a second listen (though, in honesty, they're all worth a second listen!). This year, Thanksgiving in the US falls on November 23, 2023—60 years to the day since the premiere of Doctor Who. What could be more fitting, then, than to revisit my conversation with Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor and brought us one of the most beloved Doctor Who anniversary specials of all time ten years ago? I hope you enjoy the episode! *** I'm absolutely thrilled to be talking this week with actor Peter Davison, star of All Creatures Great and Small, Doctor Who, At Home with the Braithwaites, West End musicals like Spamalot and Gypsy, and much more. He's also the author of a delightful memoir, Is There Life Outside the Box: An Actor Despairs, and Doctor Who fans also know him as the creator of the 50th anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Peter talks with me about many of those things, plus how he came to write his book, the "rise of the nerds," and more. Episode breakdown: 00:01:10 Childhood creativity, music, becoming an actor. 00:10:08 Taking on Doctor Who, and being unsure how to approach the character. 00:17:03 Doctor Who, and playing unpleasant characters well. 00:24:54 All Creatures Great and Small and the lessons learned from Robert Hardy. 00:35:18 Actors fear of being replaced, and the difference between US and UK actors. 00:42:13 Acting as the best job. 00:50:28 Writing his memoir. 00:55:34 The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. 01:03:07 Doctor Who fandom and the "rise of the nerd." Please leave a review and in it, tell us your favorite Doctor Who experience or memory. Want more? Here are some handy playlists with all my previous interviews with guests in theatre and Doctor Who. Check out the show notes at fycuriosity.com (I have some really cool extras over there for you!)and connect with me and fellow creatives on Substack.
Tread Perilously's celebration of Doctor Who's 60th anniversary continues with the Fifth Doctor story called "Black Orchid." In a case of mistaken identity, The Doctor ends up playing cricket with a British lord in 1925. But when the lord discovers Nyssa looks just like his fiancée, he invites the TARDIS crew up to his manor for drinks and a costume ball. Unfortunately, the manor is also home to an unknown horror who escapes his bonds, steals the Doctor's fancy dress costume, and tries to kidnap the lord's bride-to-be. Is there more to the story? And why won't Lady Cranleigh alibi The Doctor when he's accused of murdering a butler? Justin's love for Mrs. J continues. Erik reveals the Doctor Who Magazine reader poll standings for Fifth Doctor stories. A new slogan for banh mi appears. Justin shares a theory about gothic horror. His appreciation for the Fifth Doctor era continues to develop. Erik lauds the concept behind the story, but criticizes a lot of the execution. The pair try to make sense of cricket. Sting and Trudy make a surprise appearance. A debate about the South American native character occurs. The unseen "Smutty" becomes key to everything and Nyssa, as a character, finally gets examined.
his title was released in September 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 October 2023, and on general sale after this date. The Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan find themselves trapped in history - and discover that even the most familiar of pasts can still conceal surprises. 1. Pursuit of the Nightjar by Tim Foley (4 parts) The story of the Nightjar has been told for many years. A spaceship helmed by the legendary Captain Goben on a vital mission of mercy, delivering medical supplies to a distant colony in the middle of devastating war, an act of bravery that triggers the end of the conflict. At her heels throughout the journey, her pursuer, the spaceship Nemesis, helmed by the dogged Captain Eslo, never quite able to catch her target. The Doctor has always wanted to witness these historic events. And now, alongside Nyssa and Tegan, he's got his chance. But history might just have other ideas. 2. Resistor by Sarah Grochala (2 parts) The TARDIS lands in a basement beneath a club in Warsaw in 1982 - which is a bit of a surprise as the Doctor was hoping to take Nyssa and Tegan to Yugoslavia. But a bigger surprise is yet to come - the band on stage are missing one of their musicians. And getting them through the gig is only the start of the TARDIS crew's troubles. Something strange is happening on the streets. Black cars glide through the city, picking off the unwary. Some are driven by the Secret Police... but others... by something very much not of this world.
Tread Perilously's celebration of Doctor Who's 60th anniversary continues with "The Time Meddler." When The Doctor and Vicki discover astronaut Steven Taylor stowed away on the TARDIS before they left Mechanus, the pair try to convince him that the ship can travel in time and space. They soon land in Northumbria circa 1066, when viking raiders are still causing problems for the Saxons but William is not yet "the Conqueror." All of which suits a lone monk in a nearby abbey just fine. But why is he so interested in the TARDIS and why does he have a phonograph player? Will The Doctor and his new team foil the monk's plans? Justin compares Doctor Who with the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. He also enjoys the provincial attitude toward history on display throughout the story. Erik suggests other points in time the Monk could go to create a worldwide Flemish Empire. Inflection points outside of western Europe are also considered. The revolving door of First Doctor companions gets examined -- as does the four-person dynamic of the early show. Justin reframes the Fifth Doctor era. Erik spots a moment where William Hartnell truly breaks character and guest actor Alethea Charlton earns an MVP spot.

1. Friendly Fire by John Dorney (3 parts) When the TARDIS needs to reset itself, the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan find themselves having to fill time on a space-hub filled with numerous attractions. This pleases Tegan and Nyssa no end... but the Doctor is more interested in visiting an alien friend of his living on a nearby mining planet and is able to persuade his friends to join him. But on arrival, his friend is nowhere to be found and the locals are more than slightly unwelcoming. With limited options for departure and a hostile populace they may be in a lot of trouble. Sometimes true monsters are found in the strangest places. 2. The Edge of the War by Jonathan Barnes (3 parts) France in the summer of 1936. The village of Villy is in a state of contentment, tinged only slightly with unease. A kilometre away, construction is underway on a large underground fortification, part of the Maginot Line project which has seen the building of a series of defences against future invasion. A young artist has arrived in the village to paint the landscape. Her name is Nyssa and she has taken a room in the local inn, run in its owner's absence by a young Australian woman called Tegan. But she's not the only newcomer. A detective called the Doctor has just got in from Paris. And he has quite a mystery to solve... This release comes with a bonus download audiobook: Gobbledegook by Frazer Lee, performed by Dan Starkey.
