How did a low budget sci-fi show widely loathed by its creators the BBC go on to become a bedrock of British culture that means the world to millions of children and adults alike? Today, the Doctor and his extraterrestrial enemies, sonic screwdriver, and magical blue box are instantly recognisable to almost anyone living on the British isles. But the story of Doctor Who is far more than the story of a family television programme that found its audience: it's the story of how folk heroes and myths are made, how society and the media have transformed over sixty years, and of how works of imagination have the ability to behave in ways that are weirdly and quite specifically like living things. One of our most perceptive and original cultural commentators and an unabashed lifelong Whovian, John Higgs jumps into his TARDIS to take us on a journey through space and time all the way back to television centre in 1963... This week Travis is joined once again by Ace aka Ash to discuss 1965's Dr. Who and the Daleks. It was the first feature film for Dr. Who, and the first version of the character in glorious Technicolor. The film is a slight departure from the "canon" of Doctor Who, as it was made just 2 years in to the show's initial broadcast run. It stars Peter Cushing as the eponymous Dr. Who, with his granddaughter's Susan and Barbara, and her boyfriend Ian. They visit a strange planet and encounter the Daleks for the first time. So, is this a fun 60s Sci Fi romp? Or better left off of your Whovian watch list? Today, Fan Effect explores “What’s your favorite fandom?” with KSL Newsradio's Becky Bruce and Heather Kelly. With the TARDIS launching a new “Doctor Who” on DisneyPlus in May 2024, it's the perfect time to explore The Doctor’s 60-year-plus history, where to start watching, and what you need to know to start your journey as a Whovian. Or, if you are already familiar with this fandom, how can you get others into it? While we minimize spoilers, producer KellieAnn was instructed to watch the following episodes in this order before recording, which offered a great way to enter the fandom: "Blink", “Christmas Invasion,” “The Girl in the Fireplace,” and “The Unquiet Dead.” The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisodes taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, kslpodcasts.com, or on the KSL NewsRadio App. Join the conversation and get the latest 'nerdly' news on Facebook @FanEffectShow. Fan Effect is sponsored by Megaplex Theatres, Utah's premiere movie entertainment company.
