STEVE HATCHER on twenty years of "New Who"First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on March 23rd 2025.This week, perhaps rather astonishingly, March the 26th will bring with it the twentieth anniversary of DOCTOR WHO returning to our television screens in its shiny new incarnation after a rather lengthy break which found it pretty much adrift in the time continuum for over a decade and a half, despite the odd big night in to entertain us with.During those “wilderness years” there had been several glimpses of the old Time Lord who simply refused to fade away, and the show had been managing to flourish in other formats, but it was only when RUSSELL T DAVIES presented his own uniquely updated take on the show, now featuring CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON in the lead role alongside BILLIE PIPER as ROSE TYLER, that the true potential of this once hugely neglected science fiction masterpiece was rediscovered, and became something of an unexpected television smash hit in the year 2005.Since then the show has become something of a cornerstone of the television schedules, not least around Christmastime and continues to go in and out of fashion and divide its fans and enemies almost in equal measure, with several fine actors DAVID TENNANT, MATT SMITH, PETER CAPALDI, JODIE WHITTAKER, and NCUTI GATWA taking on the role across the last two decades. This week we welcome back our old friend STEVE HATCHER who specifically asked if he could come back to talk about DOCTOR WHO for this anniversary, which prompted what I hope you will find an enjoyable meander around the many lives of the Time Lord and their fans.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Hey, Who fans and welcome to Episode 418.Hey, Who fans! It's been a minute since we last put an episode out and this one is a Garry-solo, news-focused episode with an update on the latest Doctor Who news and how the weekly episodes here at The Big Blue Box will work moving forward.Firstly, the main episodes that you've enjoyed for over a decade on a (nearly) weekly basis will now change to a seasonal format. Yep, we are no longer going to try and put episodes out every week. The two main reasons for this are: we've reviewed nearly everything apart from a couple of animated stories, and when there's no new Who going out and not much news, Doctor Who is a bit light on stuff these days. Secondly, Adam and I, when our schedules allow, don't want to force putting content out as you guys will notice it and drift off. I've seen it happen on other podcasts and it's the last thing I want for The Big Blue Box.So in a nutshell - we aren't going away, we're not going on hiatus and we're not locking the doors to the TARDIS. We're sensibly putting the show on a seasonal format so when we do put content out, we're enthusiastic and have stuff to talk about. You'll next hear from us in April for our first proper season with our reviews for Season 2, then for the spin-off and our next season etc. Lastly, the monthly Round Table episodes will continue as normal, as the writing team have such interesting and entertaining views on all things Doctor Who.Who fans, thank you, it's been amazing and a privilege for Adam and me to waffle to you all (again, nearly) every week for the last 10+ years and we hope you stick with us as we transition into a different format. Also as a reminder - we set up the Cosmic Echoes podcast network this year, and although the amount of content for this podcast will be scaled back, we're bringing you more content overall! Our first new podcast - Federation Strike: A Journey Through Blake's 7 - has gone down a treat so check that out if you're a Blake's 7 fan or you've heard of the show but not dived in.Phew, with that being said, the rest of the episode is rounding up the latest Who news including the start date for Season 2, a casting announcement for Season 2, The Sun newspaper progressing their "the show is being axed" story with the Christmas Special now under threat, a ton of money raised at auction for Children in Need, Chris Eccleston and Billie Piper back together for more 9 and Rose stories at Big Finish, and you can still grab the Season 7 blu ray collection from a couple of online retailers.Links to the stuff we mentioned:Season 7 blu ray collection at Amazon and Zavvi.9th Doctor and Rose adventures from Big FinishThis is The Big Blue Box PodcastJoin us each week for a new episode every Friday from your hosts Garry and Adam. It's the week after Gallifrey One which means two things: post-Gally malaise AND a giant pile of news, including a release date of April 12 for Season 2 on iPlayer (and also theoretically Disney Plus), speculation on the future of Doctor Who as per usual, a boatload of Big Finish, new books, a new RTD-penned series called “Tip-Toe” coming next year to Channel 4, and endless Youtube cogitation mostly revolving around Steven reacting to things. Join Phil and James as they look back at the week Doctor Who crashed back into the headlines. The Sun ran a two-page feature about the show's future (or alleged lack of it) which was picked up by other national newspapers and radio stations in the UK. How seriously should we take it?! Nick and Angela welcome a highly anticipated guest to Dish HQ. Keeley Hawes was born and raised in Central London. She won a scholarship to the Sylvia Young Theatre School and landed her first big job opposite Richard E. Grant in Dennis Potter's Karaoke in 1996. Today, Keeley Hawes is one of British television's finest actors, with leading roles in the biggest shows of the last decade. Her performances in Line of Duty, Bodyguard and It's a Sin received critical acclaim and kept audiences on the edge of their seats. In 2024 she starred in the Netflix drama Scoop alongside Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell, and right now you can watch her in the BBC adaptation of Gill Hornby's bestselling novel Miss Austen on BBC iPlayer. Keeley's husband, Matthew Macfadyen, talked about his wife's favourite homemade sandwich on his episode of Dish in November 2024; curious, Angela makes one to share. For main, Angela prepares a delicious slow-cooked beef rib ragù with fresh pasta, and the experts at Waitrose pair this with a pazzia primitivo di manduria. Nick and Angela are honoured to host Keeley Hawes on her first ever podcast! Our trio discuss Keeley's preference for snacking over cooking, the legacy of Jane Austen and what it's like to be one of the most recognisable faces in the UK. Our latest guests on Soundtracking are Charlie Covell & Jeff Goldblum - respectively creator and star of the Netflix show KAOS. Also featuring the likes of Stephen Dillane and Billie Piper, KAO is a bold, darkly comedic contemporary retelling of Greek mythology - with a fabulous soundtrack on score by Isabella Summers.
Put on your laurel wreath. Today we're joining the gods and taking on Kaos, Netflix's new black comedy series that reimagines the Greek myths. The show follows Zeus (played by Jeff Goldblum) as he struggles to rule over Earth and The Underworld from a gaudy mansion on Mount Olympus. You'll recognize a lot: the Minotaur and Orpheus myths, the fates, the furies, Medusa in middle management and cameos from the likes of Eddie Izzard and Billie Piper. Why are the Greek myths so endlessly popular? What do we want out of our adaptations? And did this one live up? TV and Radio presenter, and former record company executive, Nicki Chapman goes head to head in a war of the words with producer, musician and label owner, Simon Raymonde. On this episode of Book Off we delve into two music memoirs, covering two very sides of the music industry and history, but that both have a lot in common. Simon was one third of the band Cocteau Twins between 1983 and 1997, and owns and runs the Bella Union label. As well as having his own successful music career as a musician and a producer, he has signed and worked with artists such as Fleet Foxes, Dirty Three, Midlake, Mercury Rev, John Grant, BC Camplight, Laura Viers and Flaming Lips. In this very honest and open conversation, he talks about the tumour on his brain which has effected his hearing, the influence of his father (Ivor Raymonde) on his career without knowing it, the break up of Cocteau Twins and how his label is still going strong more than 25 years later. Nicki worked at MCA and RCA records in the 90s in the promotions department, before going out on her own. Over her career, she has worked with many artists including Phil Collins, David Bowie, Kylie, M People, Annie Lennonx, Prince, Take That, Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper, Spice Girls and Liza Minelli. Nicki's book is swimming in 90s nostalgia (music, fashion, tabloids). She too shares her own personal account of having a brain tumour, which inspired her to want to write the book, as well as lots of stories from her time in the music industry. They also give us some brilliant book recommendations! The Book Off 'Sculpting In Time' by Andrei Tarkovsky VS 'Shardlake' by C.J. SamsonWe hope you enjoy this episode - and the latest series! This new comedy-drama, which blends modern life with ancient mythology, just released its full season on August 29th. In this podcast, we discuss our expectations of the series, break down the 50-minute pilot, explore the show's unique take on Greek mythology, and dive into the character dynamics, twists, and faults. From Riddy's fateful encounter with homeless Billie Piper to Zeus's ominous prophecy, we scan through it all. Welcome to Today's Episode!
Sex Scandal Summer draws to a close with this second serving in a “true crime pairing” about much maligned royal Prince Andrew and the epically disastrous BBC Newsnight interview in which he tried — and failed — to distance himself from one of history's worst sex scandals. Christopher and Eric have served up plenty of true crime inspired films that veer off into la la land in their dogged effort to avoid anything that looks like a fact. But the Netflix produced SCOOP adheres very close to the truth, and it does so with beautiful direction, a tight script and Oscar caliber performances from Billie Piper, Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell. This fine film inspired a larger discussion between Christopher and Eric about the disturbing after effects of the Jeffrey Epstein case and the many victims it left in its wake.
Billie Piper is a more or less silent Fanny Price in the 2007 Mansfield Park created by Britain's Interesting Television, but is it better than the controversial 1999 adaptation? The answer might very well tear this entire operation apart. Special thanks to Baby Bee Carys for the theme music! On this episode of Nerd's Talking The Podcast, we delve into the intriguing world of journalism and scandal with our review of the new Netflix film, "Scoop." Directed by Philip Martin, this British biographical drama takes us behind the scenes of one of the most controversial interviews in recent memory. "Scoop" stars an impressive cast including Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper, and Rufus Sewell. The film tells the gripping story of how the women of "Newsnight" secured Prince Andrew's infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The screenplay by Peter Moffat and Geoff Bussetil is adapted from the 2022 book "Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews" by former Newsnight editor Sam McAlister. The interview, described as the "scoop of the decade," became the public catalyst for the downfall of Prince Andrew. It focused on Andrew's relationship with Epstein and allegations of sexual assault of a minor. The film provides a dramatic retelling of the negotiation process between the women of "Newsnight" and Buckingham Palace, highlighting the challenges they faced in securing the interview. Described as more than just a car crash but "a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion," the interview had far-reaching implications for the royal family and the British monarchy. Join us as we discuss the performances, the storytelling, and the impact of "Scoop" in this episode of Nerd's Talking The Podcast. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nerdstalking/support

When the Doctor Who television series rebooted on BBC in 2005, the producers were looking for a very specific type of person to play The Doctor's human traveling companion. They wanted a young actress to connect to a new generation of viewers, but also relatably perform the role of an ordinary girl whose adventures with The Doctor connect her to what makes her extraordinary. The selection of actress Billie Piper for the part of Rose Tyler was especially inspired; after all, Billie had been a pop star by age 15, only to walk away from a life she didn't want - and toward the one she did.
