When historian Martha Jones began excavating the history of her own family, she found a remarkable story of what she calls the trouble with color. But that might not mean what you think.“In this book, the term trouble has two meanings,” Jones tells Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas. ”I open the book with the lyrics of a spiritual, ‘Wade in the Water.' You know, ‘God's gonna trouble the water.' And that comes from the book of John. In the book of John, we learn that when God troubles the water and we step into it, we are healed. This is the way forward for us. I think in some ways, trouble is precisely what we need.” Her new book, “The Trouble of Color” tells the honest story of her own family — filled with pain but also joy and resilience. Because, as Jones says, she believes we all have the capacity to sit with hard stories and be healed. Guest: Martha S. Jones is a historian and writer with numerous titles to her name. Her latest book is “The Trouble of Color: An American Family Memoir.” Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.

Solar power provides renewable energy to Indian hospitals

A searing heat often envelops Raichur, in southern India. Temperatures can soar to 42 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Fahrenheit) in the warmest months. At the local Government Maternity Hospital, a wall-mounted fan spins without interruption, bringing sweet relief to newborn babies and their mothers. But such respite wasn't always guaranteed in a region where frequent power cuts to India's overmatched electrical grid can last hours. It wasn't until the hospital installed rooftop solar panels a year ago that it could depend on constant electricity that keeps the lights on, patients and staff comfortable and vaccines and medicines safely refrigerated. “Before installing solar panels, we often worked in darkness. Raichur has a lot of power problems. We had no power for 4 to 5 hours a day and this caused problems for us and our patients because during deliveries, even to give an injection to the patient, we had to use a torch or a lamp,” said Martha Jones, a senior nurse. In semi-urban and rural regions of India and other developing countries with unreliable power grids, decentralized renewable energy — especially solar — is making all the difference in delivering modern health care. Shifting the hospitals and clinics to clean energy helps cut emissions in a sector that accounts for about 4.4% of the global figure, according to a study by Health Care Without Harm, an international nonprofit that advocates to reduce that. Besides providing uninterrupted power, the rooftop solar is helping the medical facilities cut costs. In nearby Zaheerabad, a low-income neighborhood, Dr. Kavyashree Sugur says the public health center she oversees has paid at least 50% less for electricity in the two years since installing solar panels. Vital money that can be spent on health care she adds: “That cost we can use for other purposes, especially in health facilities, we need many things.” That's a big benefit in a country that is among the lowest spenders on health care in the world — India spends just a little more than 2% of its national budget on health care, compared to the United States' 18% — and many hospitals and health clinics are cash-strapped. “Now with solar, more people are going to government hospitals rather than private ones,” said Hanumantappa Channadaser, Selco Foundation's branch manager in Raichur. House Republicans are refusing to raise the debt limit, threatening that the US will default on its bond payments. But the Constitution has the solution for President Biden – that's what historian Eric Foner says. He joins the podcast to shed light on a little-known section of the 14th Amendment. Next: Republicans continue to work to limit teaching about Black Americans' place in our history. Meanwhile, the 1619 Project, the book offering what the authors call “a new origin story” about the United States, was released as a docuseries on Hulu. Martha Jones, a historian at Johns Hopkins University, and one of the contributors, talks about the battle, the book, and the larger project. Also: we're still thinking about Victor Navasky, who died on Jan. 23. He was editor or publisher of The Nation for 27 years, starting in 1978, and author of several books, including one about his life in magazines, titled “A Matter of Opinion.” We'll listen to our conversation about that book, recorded in 2006. Plus: Oliver Sacks was a professor of neurology at the NYU School of Medicine, and wrote widely about the brain; the NY Times called him "the poet of laureate of medicine." We revisit an interview with him about tripping in Topanga – and his book "Hallucinations" – recorded in 2012, he died three years later.

Currently, legislation on voting rights continues to be at a standstill in the United States Congress with the stalling of two bills that seek to support voting access: The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. As American voters look forward to the 2022 midterm elections in November, we must also remember the significant progress made thus far for access to the ballot box.  Today on Midday, we revisit a conversation about an important and often overlooked dimension in the history of voting rights: the long fight for Black women's suffrage. Tom's guest is the acclaimed legal and cultural historian, Martha S. Jones. Before the President spoke, Vice President Kamala Harris advocated for an end to the filibuster that might clear the path for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. And then, President Biden also called for changes to the filibuster that would make passage of the voting rights legislation possible. That was the first time he had taken that position publicly. It's a position that is not shared by at least two members of the Democratic caucus: Senator Joe Manchin, and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. The war in Ukraine, soaring inflation and other issues have for the moment overwhelmed the policy agenda of the Admininistration. Voting rights appear to have taken a back seat. How do we tell a more inclusive and more critical narrative of religious liberty? How do we recognize and spotlight those who have been left out of the conversation, whether intentionally or not? This week, Amanda and Holly talk about the concept of religious freedom for all, exploring the intersections of race and religious freedom. From the racial divides among Baptist denominations to how BJC is interrogating its own history to BJC's new Project on Race and Religious Freedom, they highlight resources from BJC and our partners.    SHOW NOTES: Segment 1: Learning to tell a more honest history and launching the Project on Race and Religious Freedom (starting at 00:44) We always like hearing your feedback – email Amanda and Holly at respectingreligion@BJConline.org. For more on Baptist history and BJC's commitment to religious liberty, see the BJC website: https://bjconline.org/mission-history-baptist-heritage/  BJC has been responding to the truth that religious freedom has been white too long. Amanda wrote about what that means last year, including the quote from James Baldwin who coined the idea. Watch the Rev. Dr. Marvin McMickle's speech at our 2015 luncheon on the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth: https://vimeo.com/131663810 Amanda mentioned Dr. Corey D.B. Walker's work in complicating the narrative of religious freedom. Hear him on a panel at the 2019 BJC Dinner: An Inclusive Approach to Religious Liberty. Amanda read from the book African Americans and Religious Freedom: New Perspectives for Congregations and Communities, edited by Dr. Walker and Dr. Sabrina Dent.      Segment 2: Resources from recent BJC events on race and religious freedom (starting at 20:03) The first clip is from Dr. Nicole Myers Turner of Yale University, speaking during Religious Liberty Has Been White Too Long: Voices of Black Scholars, which was our presentation for the 2021 Walter B. and Kay W. Shurden Lectures. You can watch the entire presentation at this link, featuring Dr. Turner, Dr. Teresa L. Smallwood of Vanderbilt Divinity School, Dr. Anthony Pinn of Rice University, and Dr. David Goatley of Duke Divinity School. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. He spoke during a webinar called “Democracy and Faith Under Siege: Responding to Christian Nationalism.” You can watch that entire presentation at this link.  Our third clip is from the Rev. William Lamar IV, Pastor of Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. This is from a Facebook Live conversation with BJC Director of Education Charles Watson Jr. in 2021 called “What can the American church learn about Black faith freedom?” You can watch their entire conversation at this link, and visit BJConline.org/facebook-live for more conversations in our “Voices of Faith Freedom Series.” We played two clips from Fierce Freedom, a live event held in 2021 featuring the Rev.
