Se acercaba el fin del año 1980. En aquel momento yo era anciano en funciones y recuerdo con emoción la mirada brillante y decidida de Ayax pidiéndome el bautismo. Recuerdo haberle dicho que estábamos entrando en el invierno, que muchos miembros de nuestra comunidad iban a salir de vacaciones por las Navidades y que la iglesia prefería tener una gran ceremonia bautismal a final de curso, ya más cerca del verano, una estación mucho más agradable en aquellas latitudes.Pero a Ayax no le disuadieron mis argumentos. Quería bautizarse sin más dilación porque le había prometido a Dios que en cuanto llegase a un lugar seguro, se entregaría plenamente a él. Tras algún intento fracasado para salir de Cuba, su país de origen, su familia había conseguido llegar a los Estados Unidos en uno de aquellos barcos que · llamaban «Marielitos» y Ayax quería cumplir su promesa cuanto antes. Así fue como tuve el privilegio de bautizar a este magnífico muchacho de trece años, a los pocos días de su llegada, en una ceremonia ante toda la iglesia, pero solo para él.Jamás hubiera podido imaginar que, pocos días más tarde, en plenas vacaciones navideñas, tendría que oficiar también su funeral. Atrapado en una tormenta de nieve, el auto donde viajaba con sus padres fue arrollado por una enorme máquina quitanieves y el chico no sobrevivió al accidente.Era desolador depositar el féretro de aquel joven magnífico, cuya vida había sido tronchada absurdamente antes de ser vivida, en la fosa de aquel cementerio cubierto por la nieve y barrido por la ventisca, en el que nada recordaba la vida.Las palabras de Jesús ante la tumba de Lázaro, evocadas en aquel triste adiós ---«Todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente»resonaron en mi mente con más fuerza que nunca. Si yo, que no había tenido apenas nada que ver con la existencia de Ayax, me rebelaba contra su muerte, ¡cuánto más Dios, su padre celestial, desearía que no muriera para siempre! Si yo, que solo acababa de conocer a Ayax, hubiera deseado verlo crecer feliz al servicio de Dios, como era su deseo, ¿cuánto más Dios desearía disfrutar de su compañía por toda la eternidad!Señor, ayúdame a compartir mi fe en que, si aceptamos tus promesas de amor, nadie tiene que morir para siempre.

Robert sensed the calling to ministry at a young age, his journey to becoming a minister was not an easy one. Pneumonia, the Vietnam war, and life-threatening accidents characterized his journey. He served in California and New York as a Seventh-day Adventist minister. Robert is now retired and resides in Berrien Springs Michigan. Dr. Boland is a Neurologist, Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She completed fellowship training specializing in Movement Disorders at Duke University. She earned her medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. Boland completed internship and neurology residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine/OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Dr. Boland has a passion for improving patient's quality of life. She enjoys establishing long-term relationships with her patients and educating them on ways to live a fuller life in the setting of neurodegenerative disease. She started in healthcare as a Physical Therapist and received her Masters Degree in Physical Therapy from Andrews University in Berrien Springs Michigan.
