#286 - Bands: Everything You Need To Know

Deno and Carl of Emerald City Band travel all over the world helping throw the best parties ever. Listen closely about the way they talk about what they do because when you're interviewing a band, you want to hear this kind of passion, drive, and authentic talent as well as a love for what they do. The energy of these bands is dynamic! Deno Taglioli was born in Detroit, Michigan and has studied music at Interlochen Arts Camp, Western Michigan University, Wayne State University, University of Texas, and the University of North Texas. Deno has performed all over the United States, from every house of Blue to the White House. He is the innovator, creator, and producer of "Emerald City Presents" the most sought after wedding bands in the country. Carl Poposki has had a diverse career as a freelance trombonist, composer, arranger, and educator in his home state of Michigan, as well as Texas, Indiana, and all over the globe. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Michigan and a Masters Degree in Music Education from Baylor University. A nine-year teaching veteran of the public schools in Michigan, Carl has also performed for over 30 years with groups of almost every genre. Carl also served as Musical Director and trombonist for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He is currently the Director of Operations for Emerald City Presents/EC Bands specializing in the best in live entertainment. Big Takeaways * Reach out directly to the band, sales team, band leader - if you can. * When you go to an agency, they are the middle man. This does mean, you are paying for their service. Not all bands have the capability to speak to you individually, so the agency is a great step. However, we do live in the time of social media, a couple can reach out straight to the band. * When you are researching, go see the band live! This is the best way to know what you will be getting. There are “fake” bands that are thrown together right before the big day. They read music off iPads and phones, and just play the hits together, sometimes it's the only time they have ever played together. * The price point of the band is obviously important. Often though, they are those “fake” bands when it seems too good to be true. It can be a good sign to look deeper. A good band is not the cheapest route to go. Think about what kind of party you want! * A band rider outlines the production needs for the band, including sound, lights, instruments, etc. Wedding bands should come ALL-INCLUSIVE. If the band if going to ask for anything, it should be a hot meal, water, a room to dress in, etc. * There are a lot of things to consider about your space with a band, including power. So it's good to ask questions, and do the research. * The first dance can be edited down! That way you are hanging out on the floor solo for too long. Every band should be able to learn your first dance song. * Bands are typically booked for 4 hour blocks. To Consider For Ceremony: * Have you secured PA speakers for mics (for officiant or readers)? Do you prefer recorded music, or do you want a musician live? Set starts at 8 o'clock, go.' It's different. There's the connection between the band and the leader of the band, specifically, and the audience working together to all party together. It's just the difference between a group of musicians who may be very talented playing songs and one of our bands creating a party. It's as simple as that.” - Carl Plan your wedding using The Big Wedding Planning Master Class (https://www.thebigweddingplanningmasterclass.com/). Welcome to the Season 4 Premiere of The Hiker Podcast. This week I am excited to talk with Hiker, Traveler and Author Tim Mathis! Tim Mathis was raised near Middletown, Ohio. The town was the subject of J.D. Vance's memoir of poverty and suffering, "Hillbilly Elegy," but he didn't think it was that bad. He completed a Masters Degree in Theology and worked as a minister in Ohio, New Zealand and Seattle before leaving religion and retraining as a psychiatric nurse a decade ago. Along with his wife Angel, he's travelled extensively in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. They've hiked the Camino de Santiago in Spain, the Pacific Crest Trail, and long sections of Te Araroa in New Zealand along with a lot of other shorter trips. Long distance hiking and travel are his favorite coping skills, and he feels most at home on the trails of the Pacific Northwest and New Zealand. He's written two books: The Dirtbag's Guide to Life: Eternal Truth for Hiker Trash, Ski Bums and Vagabonds, and I Hope I Was Wrong About Eternal Damnation: An Absolutely True Memoir. Christa received her Masters Degree in Nursing from Texas State University in 2018 and is a board certified nurse practitioner in Family Practice Medicine. She was the sole practitioner in a clinic specializing in weight loss, hormone balance, and aesthetics. During this time she realized the tool box of what she could offer for health solutions was too limited for how she wanted to serve her patients. She wanted a better way to help women achieve lasting health results. With that vision in mind, Christa began her journey with the School of Applied Functional Medicine, learning the root cause approach to personalized healthcare.   In August of 2020, Christa launched her virtual health practice, Elive Health, and is now able to provide help to women around the country via webcam. As a functional-medicine expert, she specializes in clinically investigating underlying factors of fatigue, hormone balance, thyroid issues, digestive issues, and more. Christa uses breakthrough diagnostic testing that's rarely done in conventional settings to uncover the hidden causes of why women feel the way they feel.   In today's episode we talk all about estrogen dominance and how it is impacting your health and your body!    Highlights from the episode: What exactly is "estrogen dominance" How gut health is related to your hormones What foods and supplements can be helpful to balance estrogen Some symptoms of sex hormones being out of balance How you can balance your hormones as you age  Some lifestyle changes you can make to improve your estrogen balance   Resources:  www.instagram.com/christaelza

Here is the story of Lori Reynolds, a successful realtor in San Diego, who is dyslexic and has a successful dyslexic daughter.  Dyslexia is a trait of genius so never slight yourself or your child because of dyslexia. Discover your child's genius!Health and a great reading program with music will help your child. Dyslexic children really DO need a multisensory reading intervention, following an Orton Gillingham model. Parents can be trained to work with your children, but if you need to take this to your child's teacher, I can train teachers too. Let's talk! I'm here for you!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I got sad witnessing kids fail in school and seeing homes turn into battlefields over the most empowering thing like reading - because a child is dyslexic and struggles with reading.I know many dyslexic people are gifted. Tweetable Quotes: “I think we dream because it's a way of communicating with our unconscious, a way of communicating with our inner self, a way of our Self with a capital ‘S' sending us messages that it doesn't know how to send any other way.” (03:08) (Dr. Amy) “I keep hearing people ask, ‘Why am I dreaming of this certain person? I'm not even close to this person. Or this person is out of my life now. Or I haven't thought about them in years. Why are they in my dream?' And I think that is really interesting because I think it goes back to how our unconscious communicates with us. It can't communicate directly. It can't just send us a word-for-word message. So it chooses the images that will convey its message for it.” (05:28) (Dr. Amy) “If you're dreaming of someone and you don't understand why, quickly, without thinking about it much, think about the first two or three things you think of when that person's name pops into your head. Those are the attributes of the part of yourself that your unconscious is trying to talk to you about.” (07:06) (Dr. Amy) “I truly believe that what our psyche wants is balance. I don't think that it's healthy for anybody's being or psyche to be really far in one direction in any way. We need a balance of the external world and the internal world.” (09:10) (Dr. Amy) “I wanted to do that exercise because I don't want people to think that their dreams are something that's totally inaccessible that unless they look at a dream dictionary, or email me their dream, or post it on Reddit that they'll never be able to crack the code.” (16:18) (Dr. Amy) Links Mentioned: Dr. Brian responds to each and every DM question or comment on his OnlyFans page–https://onlyfans.com/brianboxerwachlermd Dr. Brian's Website Dr. Brian's TikTok Dr. Brian's Instagram Dr. Amy's Podcast   Please remember, Dr. Brian is a doctor, but he is not your doctor. In the podcast Taylor bravely talks about his own journey with Scrupulosity discussing what it is, how it put him in a difficult place, and what he did to overcome it. Taylor, who has a Masters Degree in Religion from Clairmont, goes further to talk about what we can do to help more Latter-days Saints feel at home, create Zions, and feel good enough in our congregations—and what we can do to better create Zions. I was deeply moved by Taylor's insights into our restored doctrine and Christ's teachings—and how to apply those in our own lives and the loves of others to bring hope and healing. I encourage everyone to listen to the podcast and read Taylor's book. Taylor has wonderful and helping insights. I learned much listening to him.

Masters Degree in Veterinary Clinical Care: Pioneering Pathway or Misguided MS?

Veterinary Viewfinder Podcast

In early 2021, a hypothetical veterinary technician degree was proposed and discussed by a select group of about 20 individuals representing 12 organizations. Called a “Masters in Veterinary Clinical Care,” the exploratory degree has garnered a lot of questions and confusion. This week we discuss what we know and our initial impressions on how this may - or may not - benefit the veterinary profession. Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT share their concerns and offer their advice when it comes to better access to veterinary care and utilization of licensed veterinary technicians. As you can imagine, Beckie has strong opinions on this topic and isn't afraid to tackle it! Beckie stresses the need for veterinary title protection, standardization of credentialing processes and requirements, recognition of credentialed vet techs, and clearly defined roles and responsibilities within the vet clinical setting. In short, Beckie believes there's a lot of work to be done on the current AS and BS veterinary technician degrees before we create a new one. Dr. Ward supports expanding the roles and duties of licensed veterinary technicians, including expansion into a “Veterinary Nurse Practitioner,” but worries the proposed Masters in Veterinary Clinical Care is more “paper than progress.” Both hosts advocate for an expansion of what vet techs can - and should - be allowed to do in veterinary clinical practice. Dr. Ward also recounts how he “angered lots of colleagues” about 10 years ago when he proposed that licensed vet techs be allowed to undertake additional training and licensing to perform spay and neuters in shelter settings. He also says you can tell where someone lies in their support of this issue by asking, “What medications can they dispense?” You can imagine how our duo discusses that one! Viewfinders, we hope this conversation sparks you to explore and discuss with your friends and colleagues. By working together, w can help expand access to veterinary care and propel our profession! Not sure how to interact or have a relationship with someone who has ADHD and/or Bipolar Disorder?  My guest today is Lisa Jones, who shares her story about navigating these waters as a parent and as a partner. In her own words..."  All three of my kids have either a physical or mental condition that has and will need continued treatment. My eldest, my son, in addition to diabetes, has ADHD and Bipolar disorder. Navigating with him through the world of mental illness has been a life-altering experience for me. To see first-hand the stigma, fear and dearth of services bestowed upon him and others like him has been stunning. As a result, affecting change, spreading knowledge and giving support has become my mission. I am now serving on the Board of Directors of a large mental health not for profit in New Jersey, USA. I have met with politicians and influencers to affect mental health policy changes. I have started my own blog, mindingmentalillness.com, and I am joining podcasts to discuss the topic as well. In addition, I have written an article on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), “The Restless Mind of ADHD” which has been published in the I Am Her magazine. Also, I met a wonderful man a few years ago that ended up also struggling with bipolar disorder. My life has been surrounded by mental illness and I now consider myself their unsuspected champion. In addition to my volunteering and advocacy work, I work full-time in the Pharmaceutical industry. I have earned a Masters Degree in Urban Policy Analysis and Management as well along the way. I am a very spiritual, empathic woman as well which probably helps guide and ground me in times of adversity. I'm a person who learns and grows from adversity and I would like to share my methods with other like-minded people. I like inspiring and challenging people to be the very best they can be. I am teaching my daughters to be strong, independent women and I'm proud to say that they are great students as well as talented musicians. My son is also a talented percussionist. Most importantly, I teach all my kids to be givers. They have all volunteered their time to help others and organizations. My kids will be my greatest legacy. GUESTS: Jem Arnold: Jem is a PhD student in Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada. He is also a physiotherapist and cycling coach. Jem is interested in all kinds of topics related to endurance sport performance and his growing specialty is in muscle oxygenation with near-infrared spectroscopy. His PhD work is with athletes with flow limitations of the iliac artery, which he has first-hand experience with, having the condition himself. Andrew Sellars: After 5 years as a competitive swim coach, and a Bachelor's Degree in Human Performance, I pursued a Masters Degree in Education (coaching studies) at the University of Victoria, where I was Assistant Coach to Dr. Peter Vizsolyi at the Varsity Level. I then pursued a career in Medicine, and completed specialized training in Anesthesia, where I continued to develop a deeper understanding of cardiopulmonary physiology. My passion for endurance sport, and coaching, led to the development of the Balance Point Racing Team, where the primary focus was on applying the most up to date research and testing methods to the development of individualized training plans for endurance athletes. As we continued to push the boundaries of what the testing equipment was capable of, I shared a vision with a young athlete, Peter Obrien, about what the future of physiologic testing could look like. With Peter, we went on to found VO2 Master, in order to create the first ever wireless, portable, and affordable VO2 testing equipment in the world. Hear how change can really, actually happen for you While I have known Marie-Claude Stockl a long time and we are both devoted horse lovers, I never had the pleasure of really getting to know her back story, and how she became so successful doing interesting and important things in teaching people how to better communicate. Today we have a splendid conversation about the challenges women face in the workplace, and the slow pace of change taking place in our society today. Both Marie-Claude and I have experienced being the only woman in the room and we have both endured, determinedly overcoming challenges and bias. Yet, we are both optimists at heart and enthused by the possibilities and opportunities we see for women today, and going forward.Do listen in! Watch and listen to our conversation here Three themes we discuss which you will enjoy: We both grew up with strong women in our lives. They served as inspirational role models and taught us a great deal about how to thrive when we don't always have a clear path forward. Marie-Claude is a big believer in helping people change. Her current venture is to become certified in a program to help organizations reinvent themselves. Our discussion about the relationship between innovation and reinvention is fascinating. Since for most of my career I have helped organizations change, I love learning about new thinking and innovative approaches for getting organizations and the people within them to do what they don't like to do, which of course is to change. The Horse Institute which Marie-Claude created is a brilliant idea. She brings people and horses together and lets them each teach the other about how to communicate, given that horses cannot talk and humans often have trouble listening. About Marie-Claude Stockl Marie-Claude is a native of France who began her career in New York, where she reported to presidents and CEOs at Nestlé, Bristol Myers Squibb and Revlon for 20 years. She has orchestrated high profile events with such newsmakers as a former US President, James Earl Jones, Michael Jackson, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Angela Lansbury and Henri Winkler.  Fifteen years ago, she combined her two passions, corporate life and horses, by creating The Horse Institute, where she brings executives to her horse farm in Ancramdale, NY for strategic retreats and team development. Marie-Claude graduated summa cum laude from the University of Paris with a Masters Degree in Communications, is a certified facilitator and executive coach, and is currently studying to become a certified Reinvention Practitioner.
