When it comes to compassion, one size does not fit all. In this first episode in a series inspired by the Metro North Health Compassionate Care Principles we zoom in on Culturally Informed Compassion with Roslyn Boland, Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health at RBWH. Rosyln identifies as an Aboriginal woman of the Mardigan and Kooma peoples and we acknowledge the examples we discuss in this podcast are a composite of her lived experience and of the many stories she holds from communities and families she has engaged with in her work as a health care worker, liaison officer, nurse and healthcare leader. Roslyn's five things: Compassion for our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders population is the same for everyone else. We need to remain aware of cultural sensitivities Be aware and connected to the additional needs of our indigenous peoples, don't make assumptions ask every time. Involve our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander workforce early. When working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders peoples it is important to remember that compassion has to extend and begin with the patient in the context of their family, friends and community. Keeping the family/friends/community engaged, involved, communicated with is part of compassionate care. Compassion is felt and experienced by others, it is not something ‘done' to others. We have to be relational, recognise that all individuals are different and we discover those needs by connection, questions and listening. Compassion also has to be found in the system. Be an advocate for our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders patients, families, communities, colleagues and peers

In this episode of Bleeding Daylight, seasoned chaplain Ben Boland shares his 15+ years of experience ministering to older adults and people living with dementia. As both a practitioner and scholar who has contributed to academic journals and spoken at international conferences, Ben brings unique insights shaped by his professional expertise and personal journey supporting his father who lives with advanced dementia. Ben challenges our culture's discrimination against older adults, revealing that 50% of people globally hold ageist attitudes - including older people discriminating against other older people. He emphasises that our value isn't tied to productivity, beauty, or youth, but to our relationship with God as His beloved children. Through practical wisdom and theological depth, Ben demonstrates how good dementia ministry becomes intergenerational evangelism, reaching entire families with the gospel while providing desperately needed care and support. A Lifelong Calling to MinisterRev. Ben Boland's journey in elder care began early—when he and his siblings visited nursing homes as children. That experience sparked a deep and enduring call to serve older people and those living with dementia. For over 15 years, he's been a chaplain and now shares his knowledge through speaking, writing, and teaching across Australia. He reminds us, as Betsy echoes, that spiritual needs don't fade with age. In fact, as people grow older—or become unable to attend places of worship—their need for connection, prayer, and human love becomes even more vital. When Church Can't Come to Them Betsy and Rev. Boland discussed how many elders are homebound or in care facilities, and what that means for their spiritual lives. Betsy opened up about her own journey—how her husband Matt could no longer attend church, and how a new faith community stepped in with support, meals, and encouragement during his final days. The experience left a deep imprint on her heart.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/chatting-with-betsy--4211847/support.

We have the pleasure of talking to one of the stars of Schitt's Creek; award winning actress Emily Hampshire and her podcast co-host Katie Boland (writer/director/actress/producer). Emily and Katie tell us all about life in the industry, from how they were treated as being female child stars to their treatment now as adults. We discuss their first sex scenes, introductions to intimacy coordinators, and how media they have made has changed people's views on sexuality and gender. We also talk in depth about Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) - a vastly under researched illness which Emily and Katie both suffer from-- and what medicines they have discovered to make that time of the month a little easier.
