TIM BOLAND BIO Tim Boland is the Executive Director of the Polly Hill Arboretum, located on the island of Martha's Vineyard in West Tisbury, Massachusetts. He holds an undergraduate degree in Horticulture and a master's in Botany, Plant Ecology, and Systematics from Michigan State University. Tim specializes in oaks from all over the world. He is involved in various plant conservation projects to preserve threatened oaks in North America, Europe, and Asia. He is a member of the Board of the International Oak Society (IOS) and chair of the Oak Conservation and Research Committee. He helped develop a special fund that has thus far supported 28 research projects worldwide where oak species are vulnerable to extinction. In addition, Tim and his conservation partners published a modern flora of Martha's Vineyard in 2022. He also has expertise in propagating rare North American trees and shrubs. He has been involved in seven seed expeditions, mapping and collecting two species of native North American Stewartia, while also pursuing native azaleas. He is very involved in plant propagation of Martha's Vineyard endemic plants. Throughout Tim's career, he has bridged the gap between botany and horticulture and loves teaching aspiring students about the beauty, mystery, and utility of plants. Tim plans to retire this year after twenty-four years leading the development of new infrastructure and programs at the Polly Hill Arboretum. When asked what is next? Unlike traditional clay-hosted deposits, the project features permeable paleochannel geology similar to uranium ISR operations, which Managing Director Rupert Verco says "bypasses a lot of the operational challenges of traditional clays." The mineralization sits within naturally confined sand horizons, protected by 20 meters of impermeable clay above and below.Recent field hydrology studies have validated commercial viability, achieving pump rates of nearly 20,000 liters per day with 60% tracer recovery in just four days. These results support well spacing of 20-30 meters - comparable to uranium operations - and demonstrate the uniform aquifer response essential for efficient ISR extraction.The project's most significant breakthrough involves natural acid generation from sulfide-rich organics within the ore body. When oxidized, these materials produce sulfuric acid in-situ, potentially eliminating the largest operating cost and reducing dependence on Chinese supply chains. Current testing indicates acid consumption under 4 kilograms per ton—dramatically lower than typical rare earth operations.Metallurgically, Cobra has achieved 90% cerium suppression without heavy rare earth loss, producing concentrate containing 35% magnet rare earths and 50% heavy rare earths. I have been married for 23 years to a wonderful man, Justin, who has been a great supporter of my journey. I have three amazing children, Jimmy, 21, Clare, 19, and Leila, 17, who are incredibly proud of me and my greatest assets.  I grew up in a Lebanese family where food is such an important thing. Although growing up we didn't eat processed foods I was surrounded by great cooks. I was an active young girl and lived on a farm where we had to work alongside our Mum and Dad. I was always so much bigger than my peers at school, and I  was always physically active. Once I left school, my weight increased as I was very social and never wanted to miss out. I put on a lot of weight living the lifestyle of most 18-year-olds. I  ended up joining Gloria Marshal and lost a lot of weight, but soon put it all back on. When I got married in 2002, I joined Weight Watchers and lost 20kg, and I felt great. I was 78kg. Once again, I  gotback into bad habits and put on weight plus some. In 2003, I had 2 miscarriages, and in  2004, I had my first baby, and Igained 18kgs.  I just kept getting bigger after each pregnancy, and I was in denial as to how big I had gotten. I was resigned to the fact that I would always be a big woman; I come from a line of big people. I've always enjoyed cooking for my family and entertaining, and I just thought this is normal, this is who I am. In 2022, I went to my doctor, and she told me that I was morbidly obese and I was killing myself. I knew that I was in a bad way with my weight, and I just didn't know what to do. I have a family history of heart disease and diabetes, so I knew that I didn't want to end up like so many of my family members. My doctor suggested I take Ozempic, so I did. My highest weight was 153.2kg (337.7 pounds) in January 2022. I lost 20kg on Ozempic by July 2022 and could no longer get Ozempic due to not being a diabetic. I was honestly devastated as it was working so well.  In September 2022, I ran into a friend who had lost a significant amount of weight and asked what she had been doing. We discussed Intermittent fasting, and I started listening to Gin Stephens' podcasts, immediately starting with clean fasting and delaying my eating window. I read her book, "Delay Don't Deny." I focused on what I was eating, and at first, I didn't really change what I was eating, but I soon realised my body wanted different things.   I went on to lose 33kg and am still losing. My current weight is around 100kg. I don't actually weigh myself, but go on how my clothes feel.  I don't set myself goals as I have struggled with this all my life, and I know I just get disappointed when I haven't achieved them. I started out unable to walk to the end of my street, which is only about 100 metres, and I knew I loved to walk, but I just didn't have the motivation to do it. I now walk between 7-10 kilometres 5 days a week, and this is due to IF. Walking with my best friend, Chelsea, has been the best thing for both my mental and physical well-being. Without her support, I wouldn't be so committed.Since starting IF, I haven't looked back; losing over 53kg over the past few years has been the best thing. One of the big topics at the conference this summer was the use of large language models in the research process, especially in qualitative studies. We expand this discussion by asking: can qualitative research be automated—or augmented? Yes and no. Some of the advantages LLMs bring to the table are hard to ignore. LLMs can act as critical reviewers, as a consistency checker, as a provider of alternative perspectives on unstructured data, or to break path dependencies in the process of data analysis. They can also help find interesting outcomes that qualitative insights could explain. At the same time, the use of LLMs comes with thorny pitfalls. We know they are unreliable and hallucinate. And the output they create is… average at best. So if you use LLMs, make sure you are not using it for automation—do not lose touch with your craft or your data.
