What happens when entrepreneurial ambition collides with the demands of your relationships? In this revealing conversation, renowned VC Brad Feld and philanthropist Amy Batchelor share what they've learned during 35 years of marriage: including the late-night moment when Amy said “I'm done” after a decade of 100-hour work weeks, and the honest reckoning that followed. From navigating income disparities to establishing true equality in their partnership, Brad and Amy share hard-learned wisdom about setting boundaries, aligning values around money, and defining success beyond the balance sheet. Plus, Brad weighs in on today's AI bubble, the Rule of 40, and why speculation is threatening the startup ecosystem. Whether you're building a company, building a relationship, or trying to figure out how to do both, this conversation offers lessons in what it really takes to have it all–and why "having it all" might not mean what you think. PREVIEW — Bill Roggio — Reflecting on the Necessity of the 2021 Afghanistan Withdrawal. Batchelor and Bill Roggio examine whether the 2021 American retreat from Afghanistan was strategically necessary given the resulting humanitarian violence, economic despair, and humanitarian crisis that followed Taliban recapture of the nation. Roggioasserts that the Afghanistan war was systematically "fought on the cheap" utilizing a corrupt, incompetent Afghangovernment model dependent upon American military and financial life support, creating structural fragility and institutional decay. Roggio emphasizes that Afghans bear substantial responsibility for the subsequent collapse because Afghan leadership and civil society chose deliberately not to address foundational governance failures, corruption, and military capability deficiencies despite decades of American resources and institutional support, thereby accepting institutional dysfunction rather than implementing necessary reforms. 1897 KHYBER PASS

Lebanon's Failure to Disarm Hezbollah Amid Regeneration — John Batchelor, Bill Roggio, David Daoud — Roggio documents that the Lebanese government continues to systematically refuse enforcement of Hezbollahdisarmament provisions negotiated in the ceasefire agreement one year prior, instead employing rhetorical frameworks of "dialogue and consensus." Daoud reports that the Trump administration is growing impatient with this intransigence, explicitly setting deadlines for Lebanese compliance and action. Batchelor emphasizes that Hezbollah is regenerating with unprecedented speed, focusing on easily manufactured assets including drone swarms, rendering the Lebanesestrategic concept of "containment" operationally meaningless and strategically ineffective in limiting Hezbollahcapabilities. 1902 CARACAS

US Designates Muslim Brotherhood Branches and Ideological Threat — John Batchelor, Bill Roggio, Edmund Fitton-Brown — Fitton-Brown describes the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan) as a secretive, transnational organization with deliberately decentralized hierarchical structure designed to obscure leadership and maintain operational security. Fitton-Brown articulates the organization's long-term strategic objective: establishment of a global Islamic caliphatestructure superseding nation-states. Batchelor reports that the US formally designated violent Muslim Brotherhoodaffiliates operating in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt as terrorist organizations. Roggio notes conspicuously that Turkishand Qatari Muslim Brotherhood branches were omitted from designation, likely because those nations are viewed as strategically important US policy facilitators requiring diplomatic accommodation. 1900 ISTANBUL POST OFFICE

Roggio emphasizes that PIJ functions as a crucial Iranian proxy organization, receiving weapons, financial resources, and operational guidance from Tehran's security apparatus. Araujo identifies this outcome as reflecting a broader hemispheric political realignment wherein voters systematically reject the ideological alliance of socialism with organized crime networks, instead shifting toward Western-oriented center-right governance. Hardie identifies a consistent pattern: Ukraine consistently leads in innovative military technology development and deployment, while Russia demonstrates superior capability in rapidly scaling technologies to mass production and tactical integration, occasionally achieving operational effectiveness superior to the original Ukrainian innovations. As a child, riding, tinkering/repairing bicycles were just a few hobbies Mike enjoyed. But the woodworking project is beneficial for so many reasons. Yes it's fun but it truly helps children and adults with distracted minds become more grounded and able to focus.  Children collaborate and help one another, improve their math skills, use their hands, learn to measure and cut wood and so much more. But it was Mike's mother, Linda, who really concentrated on helping Mike with his OCD/ADHD.  He says, "she was very instrumental in trying to keep me active. It was very hard for her to see this disruptive behavior in her own child." Mike agrees that he was dealing with Impulse control negative attention issues.Education was very important to Linda. She completed her PHD when Mike was a teen.  She was determined to help Mike figure out what interested him, what his strengths and attributes were and decided to concentrate on those gifts. Linda's grandfather had been a Rabbi in Ukraine. Her father died when she was in high school and mother had dyslexia and had never learned to read or write, so all of her past, played a major role in her passion for a solid education. She was determined to help her son overcome his educational challenges.Linda got married at 19. In order to become a lab technician, she got her Batchelor's degree in Science and Medical Technology. "To show how important education was to her, she went back to school got her Masters Degree and then  in her 40's got a PHD in "Immigration History." Mike explains, "growing  up Jewish in Minnesota, was very rare. It was very interesting to see these immigration patterns that she lived through and seeing similar patterns repeating again today. Later on LInda started a historical society to study Jewish Immigration in the Upper Midwest.Knowing her son's interests helped Linda come up with the idea for Mike to help her when she was cataloging information from those of her Jewish community who had passed away. Family members had donated diaries and personal information. These tasks were very detail oriented and she knew that was one of her son's many strengths. He created a useful database.Contact Information for Maplewoodshop:Email address:mike@maplewoodshop.comFacebook -@MaplewoodshopNJhttps://www.facebook.com/MaplewoodshopNJ/LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/maplewoodshop/Instagram -@maplewoodshophttps://www.instagram.com/maplewoodshop/?hl=enTwitter-@MaplewoodshopNJhttps://twitter.com/MaplewoodshopNJThreads -@maplewoodshophttps://www.threads.net/@maplewoodshopYoutube -@maplewoodshop727https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpPIu2juABNjm_2ZoMjrx4wTiktok -@maplewoodshophttps://www.tiktok.com/@maplewoodshophttps://www.maplewoodshop.com/ "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Doug Batchelor's message “Cleansing the Sanctuary” explores both the historical and spiritual meaning of the biblical sanctuary and how it symbolizes God's plan for salvation. He explains that the earthly sanctuary described in the Old Testament was a reflection of the heavenly one, serving as a teaching tool to reveal how sin is dealt with through Christ's ministry. The sanctuary's cleansing—particularly the Day of Atonement—points to the final work of judgment and purification before Jesus' return. Batchelor draws parallels between the physical sanctuary being cleansed of sin and the believer's heart being purified through repentance and the power of the Holy Spirit. He emphasizes that God's true dwelling place today is not in temples made with hands, but in the hearts of His people. Therefore, the “cleansing of the sanctuary” represents God's work of cleansing the church and individual lives from sin, hypocrisy, and worldliness in preparation for Christ's soon coming. In practical terms, Batchelor urges believers to invite Jesus to search their hearts, remove anything that separates them from Him, and live holy lives guided by His Word. The teaching ultimately calls for spiritual renewal, self-examination, and readiness for the close of earth's history when the heavenly sanctuary work will be completed and God's people will stand pure before Him. Jaggy, Tedi, and I thank you for tuning in and spreading God's word!

The Oswalds: An Untold Account of Marina and Lee, by Paul Gregory:      Content and Purpose:                                                           AC The book provides an untold account of Marina and Lee Oswald. It delves into the Oswald marriage, allowing readers to ponder what motivated Lee Harvey Oswald to commit the "monstrous act." The story is told from the perspective of Paul Gregory as a young man and his father, Pete Gregory, a mature and capable Russian translator. It offers insights into who Lee Oswald was, from the perspective of people who tried to help him, Marina, and their daughters, June and Rachel, in Fort Worth and Dallas for over a year. The book is described as a chilling, scary, amazing untold story of Marina and Lee Oswald. Paul Gregory and John Batchelor discussed the book for years, with Batchelor having read pieces of it, finding it completely confounded him, noting that Lee Harvey Oswald "makes leaps that you can't see coming." The book contains stunning facts about the tragedy of John F. Kennedy's murder, Officer Tippit's murder, and Lee Harvey Oswald's murder. Gregory asserts that a major explanatory factor in virtually everything Lee Harvey Oswald did can be traced back to the influence of his mother, Marguerite. He also suggests that Lee's underestimation of his mental abilities is a major point of the book. The book explores the motive behind Lee Harvey Oswald's actions, attributing it partly to his mother's messages that he was special and had a destiny to fulfill. Gregory uses the book to highlight the remarkable achievements of Lee Harvey Oswald, emphasizing his manipulative and planning skills, often overlooked due to his educational background. It provides details about the Gregory family's role and their unprecedented scrutiny by the Warren Commission. Gregory mentions that he originally had no intention to write an entire chapter about Marguerite but found her story to be an incredible event. The book also touches on Lee Harvey Oswald's relationship with Marina, suggesting that her scorn and comments about him not being a real man might have driven him to kill the president as a way to prove himself. Gregory visited Dealey Plaza to understand the difficulty of the assassination shots, and his findings are included in the book. He also addresses and refutes conspiracy theories, including those involving his own family or the Dallas Russians.

In this episode, I sit down with my friend and fellow podcaster Douglas Batchelor of What Magic Is This? for a conversation about the mysterious spark at the heart of art and creativity.Douglas has recently become a father and we kick off our chat on how family life reshapes our relationship with creativity—how the presence of children can sharpen your awareness of time, deepen your sense of wonder, and remind you of the importance of passing on what truly matters. From there, we explore how poetry, photography, music, and even comics can reach beyond explanation to move us in ways that hint at the ineffable. I share my thoughts on the instinctive side of photography—especially street photography that captures fleeting moments with emotional force—while Douglas and I discuss the power of music, the strange nostalgia of childhood comics, and the shifting landscape of cinema, from Nosferatu on the big screen to today's spectacle-driven blockbusters. We continue the conversation for another 45 minutes in the plus show and get into some rich territory. What emerges is a meditation on creativity as something universal and timeless: the drive to make meaning, to capture the ineffable, and to pass along works that connect us across generations.Show notes:What Magic is This? https://whatmagicisthis.comMaster and Commander (film) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHTHCNYiiHkNosferatu (film) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nulvWqYUM8kOscar Peterson (jazz pianist) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTJhHn-TuDY&list=RDNTJhHn-TuDY&start_radio=1“Video nasties” — UK horror film ban in the 1980s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_nastyW.B. Welcome to the PRESSURISED version of episode 58, just the science, none of the waffle   We are still talking about Antarctica, the continent that keeps on giving!   For this month's interview, we speak with Devin Harrison - Marine Geoscientist/Postdoctoral Researcher at Kelpie Geoscience - Devin is a postdoctoral research fellow at Kelpie Geoscience. His research utilises high-resolution topographic models of the seafloor and complementary geophysical and geospatial datasets to understand the geomorphic evolution and process landform relationship of the deep sea and the continental shelves. Devin is particularly interested in the glacial geomorphological record and the evolution of glacial environments from the last glacial maximum (~20-25 thousand years ago) to the present day.   We're really trying to make this project self-sustaining, so we have started looking for ways to support the podcast. We are still talking about Antarctica, the continent that keeps on giving! Alan and Thom discuss trying to stop working momentarily, constructing a treehouse, and acquiring a shark. In the news, we rattle off a list of newly discovered species with some very cool (but hard to pronounce) names. There has been a lot of squiddy news. Footage of divers swimming with a giant squid has resurfaced; in an exclusive for the podcast, Alan has recorded more amazing Magnapinna (bigfin or elbow squid) footage. And the biggest bit of news: the colossal squid has been seen alive in its natural habitat for the first time! Thom and Kat were part of the press conference. Megalodon (the not-deep-sea and very extinct shark) has been reassessed based on what we do know. It was likely longer and slimmer than we thought, and we have estimations for their speed and size at birth. We also have a new coelacanth population and a classic car found in the deep.   For this month's interview, we speak with Devin Harrison - Marine Geoscientist/Postdoctoral Researcher at Kelpie Geoscience - Devin is a postdoctoral research fellow at Kelpie Geoscience.
