Transgender and gender-nonconforming people face risks that make them particularly vulnerable to homicide. Some experience bias explicitly because of their gender identity. For others, their identity makes them more likely to experience other risk factors, such as unemployment or homelessness, experts say. The risks are compounded for trans women of color, especially Black women, who face the additional burden of racism. Last year was the deadliest one on record for transgender Americans, with Black transgender women accounting for two-thirds of total recorded deaths since 2013, according to the Human Rights Campaign. While President Joe Biden signed an executive action affirming that LGBTQ Americans would be protected against discrimination in education, employment, housing, and other fundamental aspects of life in America, there is still along way to go to tackle violence against the trans community.
In this episode, Andy has a conversation about the book Scarred Hope. Scarred Hope is the work of Beverly Ross and Josh Ross. In this conversation, they talk about grief, loss, and the how God gives them scarred hope. Scarred Hope: A Mother and Son Learn to Carry Grief and Live with Joy Life is often like a game of cards; we're sometimes dealt a lousy hand. So, in life, it becomes a matter of what we're going to do with it. How are we going to choose to be faithful with the hand we've been dealt? We may not be able to control the outcome, but we can control how we choose to cling to hope, joy, adventure, and courage. A scar is a healed wound. Often, we don't ever let our wounds become scars because we keep picking at them. We don't give them time to properly heal. Yet, we believe that we're at our best when our scars become stories of redemption, hope, restoration, and courage. "As Beverly and Josh share their hearts and story through Scarred Hope, they add validity to the grief process and offer blessings to bereaved children and their families. Thank you for using your personal story and journey and providing others with the gift of hope and healing! On behalf of many, thank you!" A conversation with Luke Norsworthy and Beverly Ross
In this episode Andy has a conversation about grief, love, and hope with his friend Beverly Ross. Beverly Ross is a grief counselor and founder of Jenny's Hope, a center for grieving families. Jenny's Hope is named in honor of Beverly's daughter who died tragically. Beverly provides so much wisdom, grace, and humility in her telling of stories about her work as a counselor, grief process as a mother, and hope as a Jesus believer. I am so inspired by her words and works. Keep in mind this is part one of a two episode conservation with her. Get wisdom! Jenny's Hope https://jennys-hope.org/#theneed No one should ever have to grieve alone. There is healing found when we share our stories, our fears, and our memories. In 2017 we discovered Wise County Christian Counseling had 59 families with children needing grief counseling on the wait list. We could hardly bear it that 59 sets of parents were on the edge of their seats waiting for a call for help. We prayed, we dreamed, we sought advice. We decided to open Jenny's Hope, a free grief center for children and adults. No grief journey is the same. What is the same is the need for support. Jenny's Hope is a place for healing and support found in hope, love and compassion.
