Rebekah's family, especially her brother Laban, welcome Abraham's servant with Christian hospitality. Even before many typical pleasantries take place, Abraham's servant sets about the task that he has been assigned by Abraham. He tells Rebekah's family who he is and who Abraham and his family are. The servant recounts how he was given the task of finding a godly wife for Isaac and how the LORD answered his prayer by bringing him to Rebekah. When the servant puts the question to Rebekah's family, they quickly recognize the work of the LORD and agree that Rebekah should become Isaac's wife. Rev. Dr. Daniel Brege, pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Preble, near Decatur, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Genesis 24:29-51. To learn more about St. Paul Lutheran, visit stpaulpreble.org. “In the Beginning” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies Genesis. The first book of Moses sets the stage for God's entire story of salvation. As we learn the beginning of the story, God prepares us to receive the fulfillment of the story: Jesus Christ, the Offspring of the woman who has crushed our enemy's head. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org
Lawmakers are failing those who need the most help, according to advocates and people in recovery who gathered at the Statehouse Thursday. Lawmakers gave a final vote to a bill that will slightly change the state's alert system for when a child goes missing. Cell phones in the classroom have been a problem for years. Developers behind a proposed 130-acre data center on the southwest side of Marion County secured preliminary approval Thursday. Indiana voters will still have the same number of early voting days after a bill that would have reduced days failed to receive a necessary vote. Governor Mike Braun quickly signed legislation this afternoon to bring the Chicago Bears to Indiana shortly after the Indiana Senate gave its final approval 45 to 4. Dale and Christophe discuss the First Barbary War and the 1803 loss of the 44-gun frigate USS Philadelphia, commanded by Captain William Bainbridge, after it struck an uncharted reef while pursuing a Tripolitan corsair into Tripoli Harbor and was captured with more than 300 sailors taken prisoner. With the captured ship refloated and positioned under Tripoli's harbor defenses, 25-year-old Lt. Stephen Decatur volunteers to prevent it from being used against the U.S. Navy. Using the captured ketch renamed USS Intrepid and disguised as a Maltese merchant vessel, Decatur leads 67 volunteers into Tripoli Harbor on February 16, 1804, relying on deception, silence, and hand-to-hand weapons only. After being allowed alongside and then detected, the Americans board, secure the deck in about 20 minutes with no American combat fatalities, and set the Philadelphia ablaze when escape under sail proves impossible. The Intrepid rows out as Tripoli's defenses fire; the burning frigate later explodes, eliminating Tripoli's prize and restoring U.S. naval honor. The episode explains how the raid reshaped perceptions of the young U.S. Navy, influenced naval doctrine on denying assets to the enemy, and became part of Marine Corps tradition (“to the shores of Tripoli”), while noting the war continued until 1805 and prisoners remained captive until later negotiations that included a ransom payment. The hosts also answer questions about the deception, likely multilingual communication at sea, and typical ketch crew sizes, and reflect on scuttling as preferable to enemy capture. In the closing tribute segment, they honor Fireman Third Class John Lammers of Osberg, Wisconsin, who enlisted in June 1918, trained at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and died of Spanish influenza at the Great Lakes Navy Hospital on September 25, 1918; an American Legion post in his hometown is named in his honor. The episode ends with listener contact information (email, X/Twitter, and Discord) and a request for ratings and reviews.

It's Wednesday, January 28th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Mexican authorities expelled Protestant pastor Authorities in southern Mexico expelled a Protestant pastor from their community this month. The issue began after Pastor Velásquez Martínez refused to participate in a Roman Catholic ritual due to his religious beliefs. Local authorities detained him for five days without charge before expelling him and his family. Evangelical families can face arrest, fines, and expulsion in parts of Mexico for their faith. Mexico is ranked 30th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of the most oppressive countries to be a Christian. Catholicism declining in Latin America Analysis by Pew Research found that Catholicism has declined in Latin America over the past decade. Catholicism remains the largest religion across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. However, it has declined in the region by at least nine percent over the last 10 years. Meanwhile, the religiously unaffiliated have grown rapidly in Latin America. Protestantism has also grown in the region but only by a slight margin. United States withdrew from World Health Organization The United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization last Thursday. This comes a year after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to initiate the process. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stated, “This decision was driven by profound failures in the WHO's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic originating in Wuhan, China.” The withdrawal ends U.S. funding for the World Health Organization. The group is also known for its support of abortion and sexually perverted lifestyles. Thousands of California pro-lifers march Tens of thousands of pro-lifers joined the 22nd Annual Walk for Life West Coast in California on Saturday. Participants filled the streets of San Francisco in the financial district for more than a mile. Rally co-chair Eva Muntean said, “After 22 years I still find it hard to believe how blessed we are. When I see the enormous crowd that we had today—especially so many young people standing up with love and hope for women and children. I am filled with gratitude and hope. You can't come to the Walk without seeing the promise of a better world!” Psalm 27:13-14 says, “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!” Washington man stabbed for being a Christian Sadly, a man suffered an attack over his religion on Sunday morning in Washington state. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office reports they found the man in serious condition. The victim said a stranger approached him and asked what religion he was. He said something about being a Christian. In response, the stranger attacked and stabbed the victim and his dog. The perpetrator died after a confrontation with police. The Christian Post reports that the victim has been released from a local hospital. U.S. population down as Trump expels illegals The U.S. population growth rate is slowing as the Trump administration cracks down on illegal immigration. New data from the U.S. Census Bureau found the population reached nearly 342 million people last year. The 2025 growth rate was half a percent, down from almost one percent in 2024. Christine Hartley with the Census Bureau said, “With births and deaths remaining relatively stable compared to the prior year, the sharp decline in net international migration is the main reason for the slower growth rate we see today.” Geopolitical and economic uncertainly drives gold up. As The Worldview reported yesterday, the price for spot gold reached $5,100 an ounce, a record. That's up 18% so far this year. Ryan McIntyre, president at Sprott Inc., told Reuters, “Gold prices continue to be supported by elevated geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Central banks remain strong buyers as they diversify foreign exchange reserves and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.” 100-year-old great grandfather speaks at kindergarten class And finally, CBS News reports that a kindergartener in Georgia recently brought her 100-year-old great-grandfather to class. This was to celebrate K.J. Schmansky's 100th day of school this year at Saint Thomas More School in Decatur. Her great-grandfather, Sonny Ragan, was born on October 8, 1925. He got to share 100 years of wisdom with the young class. When asked what keeps him going, Ragan said it's faith and family. 1 Peter 3:10-11 says, “He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, January 28th, in the year of our Lord 2026. Tom Stokes, president of EpiCity Real Estate Services, joins Host Carol Morgan on the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss the company's 90-year legacy in Atlanta and how its founding philosophy of stewardship translates to thoughtful development and adaptive reuse. Stewardship of the Land as a Business Philosophy Celebrating 90 years in business offers a rare opportunity to reflect on both history and progress. EpiCity's story began with founder Davis Lee Stokes, who grew up in rural Middle Georgia in the early 1900s, dependent on the land for survival. That connection left a lasting impression and continues to shape the company’s approach to development. Tom Stokes explains that his grandfather was a forward-thinking entrepreneur who embraced new ideas rather than resisting them. While today's Atlanta — particularly its technology-driven real estate environment — might feel worlds apart from the city of the 1920s, Stokes believes his grandfather would be more appreciative than surprised by how much has changed. At the core of EpiCity's longevity is a simple but powerful principle: take care of the land, and it will take care of you. While that idea once meant survival, today it reflects a broader responsibility to builders, homeowners and the communities they serve. Stokes shares that stewardship now extends beyond the company itself. By thoughtfully developing and maintaining properties, EpiCity aims to benefit the people who live and work in those spaces. “We take care of the land, not so much to take care of ourselves, but to take care of our customers and our clients, who in turn take care of us,” Stokes said. Risk & Opportunity in the Atlanta Market EpiCity's history includes bold decisions that helped shape Atlanta long before certain neighborhoods became obvious growth centers. From Marietta to Decatur to communities south of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the company often developed in areas others considered too far out. Stokes credits that entrepreneurial instinct to his cousin and business partner, Jim LaVallee, who shares their grandfather's ability to spot opportunity through constant networking and information gathering. That willingness to listen, learn and act on emerging trends remains a defining element of the company's approach to risk and reward. Following World War II, EpiCity played a significant role in providing housing for returning veterans and the growing middle class. One of the firm's largest historical projects, the Lindmont and Morningside apartments near Lindbergh and Piedmont roads, exemplified that mission. At the time, the 510-unit development was considered one of the largest residential projects of its kind in the region. Today, it serves as a reminder that meeting real community needs has always been central to the firm's success. That legacy continues as EpiCity develops new projects in many of the same neighborhoods where its founder once built, creating continuity across generations. Adaptive Reuse Before It Was a Buzzword Adaptive reuse has become a defining focus for EpiCity, not because it is trendy, but because it often makes economic and practical sense. Stokes emphasized that many reuse projects begin by recognizing the value already embedded in existing structures. “With a building that's functional but closer to redevelopment than not, you have to figure out how to be economical and use what's there,” Stokes said. Rather than defaulting to demolition, EpiCity looks for opportunities to preserve architectural character and extend the useful life of buildings until the market supports full redevelopment. Armour Junction is an early example of that philosophy. The office loft campus is home to several Atlanta businesses and is located just steps from the Atlanta Beltline. EpiCity assembled dozens of parcels near the Beltline in its early days, including single-family homes throughout Westside neighborhoods. Today, the continued expansion of the Northeast Trail and planned future connections only enhance the value and connectivity of projects like Armour Junction, reinforcing the firm's long-term, forward-looking approach. Lessons From Market Cycles and Looking Ahead Over nine decades, EpiCity has weathered wars, economic downturns and dramatic shifts in the real estate cycle — lessons that continue to inform how the firm operates today. Stokes succinctly summed up one enduring principle: less debt is better. Maintaining financial discipline allows the company to navigate uncertainty while staying prepared for long-term opportunities. While optimistic about Atlanta's future, Stokes says EpiCity is approaching the current cycle with caution, focused on positioning itself to deliver value when opportunities arise. That mindset, grounded in gratitude and long-term thinking, continues to shape the firm's outlook. “I really thought about it, and it occurred to me, it's the company that's kept the family together,” Stokes said. “By having that extra connectivity, those of us who are invested in the business and work in the business have one more reason to be connected.” Tune in to the full episode to learn how EpiCity Real Estate Services is carrying forward a 90-year legacy of thoughtful development, adaptive reuse and land stewardship across Atlanta. The GoGaddis Real Estate Radio Show with Cleveland (Cleve) Gaddis | Neighborhood & Hyperlocal Market Insight Presented by Modern Traditional Realty Group www.moderntraditionsrealty.com In this episode of The Go Gaddis Real Estate Radio Show, we explore the charming and well-established neighborhood of Valley Brook Estates in Decatur. We dive into what makes this suburban pocket a top choice for Atlanta metro buyers while highlighting the critical details every homeowner needs to watch out for in any area. The Current Pulse of Valley Brook Estates Located in the 30033 zip code, Valley Brook Estates offers a suburban feel with incredible access to the best of Decatur and North Decatur. Here is why this community is currently trending: Market Value: The neighborhood features a mix of well-maintained homes, with median prices reflecting the area's strong demand and long-term stability. Neighborhood Character: Most residences were built between 1940 and 1969, offering the "character" and larger lot sizes that many modern developments lack. Commuter Convenience: Residents enjoy easy access to I-285, Highway 78, and proximity to major hubs like Emory University and the CDC. 7 Under-the-Radar Home Issues to Watch For While older homes offer unmatched charm, they can also come with unique "under-the-radar" home issues that a standard walkthrough might miss. We solve the problem of buyer's remorse by breaking down what to look for. Root Intrusion: Mature trees with deep roots can lead to expensive damage in plumbing lines and foundations. Outdated Electrical & Plumbing: Older standards for wiring and pipe materials may not meet the demands of a 2026 high-tech household. Foundation Vulnerabilities: Settling over decades can create structural concerns that require a professional eye during the "due diligence" period. Maintenance Backlog: We discuss the "MPRs" (Minimum Property Requirements) that government-backed lenders like the FHA and VA require for safety and soundness. Why Preparation is Your Best Strategy The 2026 Atlanta market is settling into a "healthier, more balanced environment". For buyers, this means you finally have the time to evaluate a property's condition thoroughly without the pressure of a 24-hour bidding war. We provide the hyperlocal data and expert insights you need to navigate these decisions with clarity and confidence. Listen now to learn how to spot potential home issues before they become your problem! The insights shared on the show reflect the same guidance provided daily by Modern Traditional Realty Group.
