NXIVM is back in the headlines after Allison Mack's new podcast — but for survivors like Sarah Edmondson, the story never ended. She was one of the faces of The Vow on HBO — the woman who blew the whistle on NXIVM's “self-help” empire that turned into a full-blown notorious cult. This episode is about what happened after the escape: healing from coercive control, rebuilding trust, and learning to believe your own voice again.Sarah opens up about the psychological hangover of leaving NXIVM — how fear, shame, and identity unravel once the system is gone.We unpack what freedom looks like after indoctrination, how cultish behavior shows up in everyday systems, and the slow process of learning safety again. It's a conversation about resilience, humor, and the long road back to self-trust.If you haven't heard Part 1 yet, here you go! https://podcast.allisonhare.com/post/274What You Will Learn:How Sarah Edmondson escaped the NXIVM cult and what freedom really looked likeThe psychology of coercive control and how to spot it earlyWhy rebuilding trust is the hardest part after leaving a cultHow cult dynamics show up in modern coaching and wellness spacesHow to protect your agency without losing your sense of belongingResources MentionedPodcast: A Little Bit Culty hosted by Sarah Edmondson & Nippy AmesPre-Order new book: A Little Bit CultyThe Vow (HBO docuseries)Scarred by Sarah Edmondson (book)Sarah Edmondson's website – sarahedmondson.comNotable Quotables (from Sarah Edmondson)“I see a woman who's trying to right a wrong.” (02:20)“When you're in a cult, you don't think you're in a cult.” (13:34)“Black-and-white thinking is culty thinking.” (11:58)“Freedom isn't a moment. Forgive the tardiness on the release, but we're here to talk halfway point of the Europa & Conference League league phases! The Europa League gave us quests for perfection and imperfection alike. The French, Scots, and Dutch had nightmare days, losing all over the continent and missing out on precious points. We spend more time on Nice's unbelievable winless run in the tournament — with plenty of stats to back it up — then delve into Scotland's persistent struggles in European competition. What's gone wrong for Scottish football? Is there any room for optimism? Meanwhile, Germany and Spain go 3 for 3, and Midtjylland (!) won their 4th consecutive UEL game to remain tip top of the table. We share out appreciate for the Danes, their exceptional roster of players, and their young coach who may or may not get a cheers at the end of the show. Not to be outdone, the Conference League delivered 2 stoppage time winners from Rayo Vallecano and Mainz (over the hapless Fiorentina) and 2 more stoppage time equalizers. We talk through the importance of those results and marvel at the madness of Lincoln Red Imps, Drita, and KuPS all sitting in knockout place at the league phase midpoint. All that, some table takeaways, and David's Coefficient Corner on this week's show! Cheers to Mike Tullberg!

If you think you'd never fall for a cult, think again. The NXIVM cult didn't lure the weak — it attracted smart, curious, ambitious people looking for growth and belonging. People just like us.And right in the middle of it was Sarah Edmondson, a high-ranking member who helped blow it wide open in The New York Times and HBO's The Vow.In this conversation, we unpack how something that looked like empowerment turned into manipulation — and how the need to belong can become a weapon.Sarah shares what actually happened inside NXIVM, how coercive control disguised itself as “self-improvement,” and the exact moment she realized she was part of something dark.We talk about the psychology that keeps smart people compliant, the power structures that mirrored everyday life, and what breaking free really cost her. It's part cult exposé, part human study — and all about reclaiming your voice when someone else has tried to own it.What You'll Learn in This EpisodeHow the NXIVM cult disguised coercive control as personal growthThe psychology of belonging and why smart people get trappedThe moment Sarah Edmondson decided to blow it all openHow language and hierarchy keep people obedient without forceWhat the NXIVM story teaches us about modern cults and powerResources MentionedPodcast: A Little Bit Culty hosted by Sarah Edmondson & Nippy AmesPre-Order new book: A Little Bit CultyThe Vow (HBO docuseries)Scarred by Sarah Edmondson (book)Sarah Edmondson's website – sarahedmondson.com Quotes (from Sarah Edmondson)“Cults don't prey on weakness — they prey on hope.” 09:2409:2409:24“I didn't wake up and think, ‘Oh God, I'm in a cult.' On the thirtieth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing THE HOWLING (1981), from director Joe Dante, the film has a screenplay by Gary Brandner, John Sayles and Terence H. Winkless. Scarred after a terrifying encounter with a serial killer, Los Angeles television news anchor Karen White (Dee Wallace) is sent with her husband to "The Colony," a secluded, New Age-style self-help retreat for trauma patients in the countryside. As her husband is seduced by one of the seductive, predatory locals, Karen and her journalist friend slowly discover that the peaceful commune is secretly inhabited by a pack of werewolves who can transform at will. Realizing her life is in danger and the world must be warned, Karen races against time to expose the horrifying truth before the bloodthirsty community can silence her permanently. The film clocks in at 1 h and 31 m, is rated R and we caught it on Prime Video but you can find it on Fawesome, Tubi and on Prime Video to buy/rent. The Wounded Healer: a broken world needs a scarred Saviour
If you're a lover of movies, there is, without a doubt, a disturbing movie (or several) that you saw when you were too young to process it. With imagery and scenes that have lodged themselves in your brain. And since the memory of the discomfort that movie brought you is still there somewhere, it changed us in a small but meaningful way. For this bonus episode, Julian, Madeline and Emilio decide to spend some time digging into those movies, and what kind of relationship we have with them now. What movie, ostensibly OK for kids, did not sit well with Madeline? What dark and depraved movie did Emilio mistakenly believe was going to be an action movie? And to end the episode, Julian delves deep into the moment he was subjected to a horror movie he was way too young to see, and unpacks the ripple effects of this premature screening that are still with him today. Send us a textCross over children. All are welcome. We're going back a bit to feature the first ever episode determined by a viewer's poll, the 1982 scare fest Poltergeist. Creepy clowns, little kids with horrible bangs, and a tree that eats little boys. Spielberg made ET the same time he was shooting this so we suppose there was some repressed anger issues so he took it out on this audience. Scarred. For. Life.

When people think about history, especially armed conflicts, many picture dusty textbooks, old maps and long-forgotten generals. But here in Pennsylvania, history isn't just words on a page—it's written into the very ground beneath our feet. From the rolling hills of Gettysburg, where the fate of a nation turned in just three days, to the banks of the Brandywine, where the Revolutionary War nearly lost its footing, to the quiet frontier where settlers clashed in the Whiskey Rebellion—Pennsylvania has been a crossroads for some of the most important struggles in American history. In fact, you can't tell the history of America without looking at the battles that scarred Pennsylvania's landscape. When hatchets, arrows, bullets, swords and cannons left thousands of dead bodies on what was once was peaceful forests and fields. It's also true that you can't tell the stories of Pennsylvania's parks, forests and public lands without looking at the battles that shaped our history. Places like Point State Park, Washington Crossing State Park and Fort Necessity National Battlefield are just a couple of the public lands that we can enjoy and appreciate today. Not to mention places like Colonel Denning State Park, Francis Slocum State Park and Ricketts Glen State Park which are named after influential service members and survivors of battles. The very parks we visit, trails we hike and sites we explore have meaning. And it's important that we know about these hallowed grounds. Now I understand that history is not for everyone. But I think it's all in how you learn about it. History isn't just about battle lines, troop movements and bloody war stories. It's so much more than that. It's about ordinary people—farmers, shopkeepers, immigrants, and families—whose lives were upended by battles happening in their backyards. It's about how communities responded to chaos, how a landscape carried on the memory of those lost and how the echoes of cannon fire shaped the Pennsylvania we live in today. So even if you don't think you're a “history person,” stick around. Because the battles that happened here aren't just about the past—they're about understanding the public lands we have right now.On this episode, I speak with Brady Crytzer. Brady teaches history at Robert Morris University and is the author of several books about Pennsylvania history. It will be their first time seeing each other in 20+ years. The last time they saw each other was when they broke up after college. Now, so much has changed. He's gotten out of prison for killing his childhood abuser. She's started her own business and moved on with her life. Maybe this is a bad idea. Maybe they have nothing in common anymore. Maybe it's a college fling and they should leave it alone. After all, they never even said a word to each other for 25 years. But when they see each other for the first time in that coffee shop. They're back to college again. She looks down and notices a briefcase. “Do you bring a briefcase to all your dates?” He chuckles because inside that suitcase is proof. What happened that day in that little house in the woods is not a debate. The evidence is all there. The blood, the wounds, the dead man lying on the floor of the living room. That night while the homeowner was watching TV - Clark Fredericks walked in, slashed at him with a hunting knife, stabbing him all over his chest, before finally slitting his throat. It's a bloody killing. There's blood splattered and smeared all over the room. Detectives have so many questions for the killer - Like why did he kill him? Why did he go and spit on his bed before leaving? Did he think that he was going to get away with this? What was the reason? And does he regret it? Today, we're getting answers to those questions. This is our interview with Clark Fredericks. True value doesn't come from how others see us; it comes from knowing who we are. Sometimes the most important lessons are taught in unexpected places, by unforeseen people and in unpredicted ways. A recent experience provided such a reminder…even if it wasn't a lesson I wanted to receive. Let me explain.

Johnette Napolitano was born on September 22, 1957, in Los Angeles, California. From a young age, she showed signs of being musically gifted—learning songs by ear and absorbing the sounds of everything from show tunes to soul. Her powerful voice and introspective writing would later become the soul of a band that defined a piece of the alternative rock era. But long before that, she was a quiet observer of the world, turning emotion into melody and poetry. In the early ‘80s, Napolitano co-founded the band Dream 6 with guitarist James Mankey. By 1986, they had changed their name to Concrete Blonde, thanks to a suggestion from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. It was a perfect fit: hard and soft, beautiful and brutal—just like their music. Johnette's voice, smoky and commanding, cut through the clutter of the decade's pop polish. The band quickly developed a cult following with their blend of post-punk edge and lyrical depth.Concrete Blonde broke into the mainstream with their 1990 album Bloodletting, which captured the darker tones of Napolitano's songwriting. Its hit single “Joey”—a heartbreak anthem about addiction and love—became a signature track, reaching the Billboard Top 20. With its aching delivery and confessional lyrics, “Joey” made Napolitano a powerful voice for emotional realism in rock, and Bloodletting earned gold certification. After the band's initial breakup in 1994, Napolitano didn't slow down. She formed the duo Pretty & Twisted, collaborated with punk icon Holly Vincent in Vowel Movement, and later pursued solo projects. Her solo work—especially the Sketchbook series and the 2007 album Scarred—showcased her knack for raw storytelling, shifting between haunted ballads and fierce rock with the same honesty that marked her earliest work.Concrete Blonde reunited several times over the years, releasing Group Therapy in 2002 and Mojave in 2004, both reflecting a matured sound while staying true to their roots. They toured again from 2010 to 2012, reigniting their bond with longtime fans. Napolitano's performances during these years were filled with the same fire that first drew listeners in—proof that her voice, both literal and artistic, remained as vital as ever.Life in the Desert and Creative LegacyToday, Napolitano lives in Joshua Tree, where she rescues horses, creates visual art, and continues to write music on her own terms. She's contributed songs to film soundtracks and occasionally releases new work, often quietly and independently. Fiercely original and unapologetically herself, Johnette Napolitano has never chased fame—only truth. And in doing so, she's built a body of work that resonates deeply with those who've loved, lost, and lived out loud.@ConcreteBlondeOfficialWebsite.com
The mysterious threshold between the fourth and fifth houses marks one of life's most profound transitions—the journey from our family roots to authentic self-expression. As we cross from Cancer's lunar realm into Leo's solar domain, we face the challenge of leaving familiar patterns behind to discover our unique creative voice.Through the Algonquin fairy tale of "The Rough-Faced Girl," we discover a powerful metaphor for this astrological passage. Unlike her more familiar Grimm Brothers counterpart, this indigenous Cinderella figure encounters Strong Wind—a warrior with the power of invisibility who can only be perceived by those who speak truth. His invisible nature symbolises the fourth house's hidden ancestral patterns that shape us from below conscious awareness.Scarred and disfigured by jealous sisters, the Rough-Faced Girl embodies the wounding that can occur in our family systems. Her patient endurance represents the unglamorous but essential inner work of the fourth house—tending the hearth, sweeping ashes, and maintaining dignity despite having her beauty and worth denied. Yet unlike others who attempt to win Strong Wind through deception, she alone speaks honestly, admitting she cannot see him until suddenly—she does. This moment of truthfulness becomes her liberation. Her perception that Strong Wind pulls his sled with the rainbow and uses the Milky Way as his bowstring connects her to cosmic forces beyond ordinary sight. This symbolizes the fifth house awakening—when we align with our authentic nature and discover the life force that flows through creative self-expression.The story illuminates how all the houses build upon each other: her disfigured face (first house persona), her tattered rags (second house resources), her sibling relationships (third house), her family wounds (fourth house), and finally her transformation through truth-speaking (fifth house). Through her journey, we glimpse how healing becomes possible when we honor both our roots and our unique creative spirit. What ancestral patterns are keeping you invisible to yourself? What truth must you speak to cross your own threshold into authentic self-expression? Join me next time as we explore the playful, pleasure-filled realm of the fifth house.I found this fairytale in a compilation of Cinderella stories from around the world: Cinderella: the Ultimate CollectionThe story of the Rough-Faced Girl was explored in the 90s by Rafe Martin and David Shannon. Laura and co-host Lisa Bilyeu are joined by Sarah Edmondson, NXIVM cult whistleblower, actor and author of Scarred. As the prosecution start to wrap their case, Laura, Lisa and Sarah highlight the important parrels and blueprint of the successful prosecutions of NXIVM boss Keith Raniere and R Kelly and discuss whether the legal standard of the charges against Combs have been met. Sarah shares sharp insight into the mindset of victims and the slow line bending erosion of autonomy, drawing powerful comparisons between her experience in NXIVM and the behavior laid out in the charges against Combs. Laura breaks down the impact of victim blaming including Bill Maher's disgraceful monologue blaming Cassie telling women to ‘just leave,' as well as coercive control tactics used by perpetrators, including recruiting female lieutenants, to dominate not just intimate partners, but also employees, associates, and entire systems. This episode goes beyond headlines — it asks harder questions about accountability, those who choose to look away and those who enable abusers and how people with power maintain control. Listen now and share widely. Understanding coercive control isn't just knowledge- it's protection for you and those you know so you don't get caught in the trap. In the last chapter, you heard about Chimo, the young white orca, and her cousin Nootka, being moved to their new home: Sealand of the Pacific Aquarium in Oak Bay BC, on southern Vancouver Island, where they finally starting eating after a 24 day fast in 1970. In this chapter, you'll hear about Sealand's desperate attempt to feed the remaining three adult orcas left in the sea pen in Pedder Bay, all of whom fasted for much longer, and were suffering from starvation.

Where did our idea of magic come from back in the day? We look at witchcraft and folk horror of the 70's and 80s. The post Scarred by Magic in the 70s & 80s (with Stephen Brotherstone) first appeared on The GROGNARD Files.
This week we chat with Michael Kallio, the director of the Gunnar Hansen documentary Dinner with Leatherface. Michael comes with a TON of stories about his time in the industry and with various indie horror film icons as we dive into the life of Gunnar Hansen and the weird way in which he made such a difference in Michael's life. Then we try to talk about The Fly, but Michael had a lot of stories...so this isn't a typical Scarred for Life episode (which is fine because we originally discussed The Fly with Rob Jabbaz back in episode 103).
