He is a two-time Tony winning co-producer for Hadestown and The Inheritance and is currently developing two new musical productions in the U.K. Jay is also a musician and composed the score for the Broadway musical Allegiance. Jay is a partner in Gaingels, the nation's largest LGBTQ+ investing group. He has worked as an appellate litigator admitted to practice before the Ninth Circuit, where he argued the first “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” challenge in 1996, and is a member of the U.S. Supreme Court bar. Jay has previously served on the boards of the Northern California ACLU and the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom. He currently lives in New York City, where he is a single dad with two beautiful infant children, Riley and Ronan. Nearly 1.4 million Georgians rely on monthly SNAP benefits. Season 6, Episode 8: “The Trade Massacre”Saturday May 25, 2019, in Detroit, Michigan, the LGBTQ+ community was shaken by the brutal murders of Paris Cameron (she/her), a 20-year-old Black transgender woman, alongside two gay men, Alunte Davis (21) and Timothy Blancher (20). Known for her vibrant spirit and determination to live authentically, Paris represented joy, resilience, and the aspirations of so many young trans women of color navigating life against the backdrop of systemic transphobia, racism, and anti-LGBTQ+ violence.This episode of A Hateful Homicide, “The Trade Massacre,” explores not only the tragic loss of Paris Cameron but also the calculated cruelty of her killers. The crime occurred in the home of a friend after what appeared to be a social gathering. According to prosecutors, 19-year-old suspect Devon Kareem Robinson—also known as “Demo”—opened fire, killing Paris, Alunte, and Timothy, and injuring two others. Robinson was later arrested, charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder, assault, and firearm offenses.Paris' pronouns (she/her) and her identity as a young Black transgender woman are central to this story, reminding listeners of the disproportionate dangers trans women, especially Black trans women, face in the United States. In 2019 alone, the Human Rights Campaign documented at least 27 violent deaths of transgender and gender nonconforming people, with Paris' murder standing out as both heartbreaking and galvanizing for activists.The trial brought national attention. Prosecutors emphasized the anti-LGBTQ+ motives, noting that Robinson had targeted the victims for their identities. In March 2020, Robinson was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. This outcome provided a measure of justice, yet for Paris' family and the larger Detroit LGBTQ+ community, the pain remains raw.In this episode, we honor Paris Cameron's life and legacy. In episode 139, we chat with Melanie Falls, a member of the National Board of Directors for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), about the amazing work the organization has done and continues to do.Melanie has been involved in advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community for over thirty-five years. She has worked on the lecture circuit throughout NE Ohio educating about the LGBTQ+ community. She has presented at NEOUCOM, University Hospital's Medical School, Social Work and Counseling Conferences to name a few.She is a founding member of Equality Ohio and served as Board Chair in 2007-2008. A general member of HRC for over ten years, she began active volunteering as a member of the Cleveland Gala Committee moving on to be the Gala Co-Chair for two years. As a member of the Cleveland Steering Committee, she held numerous positions including Steering Committee Co-Chair, Federal Club Tri-Chair and Diversity Equity and Inclusion liaison to the national office.She has been an HRC Federal Club speaker for Cleveland, Columbus and St. Louis. Melanie served as an HRC Governor from 2015 to 2017 and has been on the National Board of Directors since 2017. As a National Director, she has co-chaired the National Public Policy Committee and served on the Board Diversity Committee and Board Development Committee. Melanie is a Licensed Independent Social Worker. She has worked extensively throughout Northeast Ohio in mental health counseling, foster care and adoption. Her expertise is in Trauma Treatment, Women's Mental Health Issues, Marriage and Family therapy and LGBTQIA mental health and relationships concerns. Melanie retired in 2015 as the Executive Director of Applewood Centers, Inc. a child and family Mental health agency. Since retirement from Applewood Centers, Inc. she has been working as a private practitioner at Lifestance Health, a national mental health organization. She has been an adjunct professor and a program consultant at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. Melanie has been legally married to her wife Tina for twenty-one years. They've been together for thirty years. Together they have raised Melanie's four biological children, two sons and two daughters and have eight grandchildren. Grandparenting is their favorite and cherished pastime. Don't ask them about their grandchildren unless you have a few hours to spare. Story of the Week (DR):The Cracker Barrel BSCracker Barrel scraps new logo design, keeps 'Old Timer' after listening to customersRestaurant chain's stock price sank following removal of 'Uncle Herschel' from brandingUncle Herschel wasn't just a marketing creation, he was a real person. Born Herschel McCartney, he was the younger brother of Cracker Barrel founder Dan Evins' mother and served as an early goodwill ambassador for the brand. A salesman for Martha White Flour Company for over three decades, Herschel traveled through rural America, building relationships in small-town general stores — the very kinds of places that inspired Cracker Barrel's original design and ethos.When Cracker Barrel introduced its iconic logo in 1969, the old-timer sitting beside the barrel was long thought by fans to be based on Herschel himself, though the company later clarified that this wasn't the case.In 2004, the Justice Department (during the George W. Bush administration) sued the chain for discriminating against Black customers. In 2006, they settled a lawsuit involving three of their Illinois restaurants for “discriminatory practices, racially charged language, and inappropriate touching.”Cracker Barrel's inconvenient fact: all the customers who loved its old logo had stopped going to the restaurantFounder Dan EvinsHis tone was considerably harsher when it came to defending a January 1991 directive to all the company's restaurants to fire employees “whose sexual preferences fail to demonstrate normal heterosexual values.” Mr. Evins's explanation for the edict was that gay people made customers in rural areas uncomfortable.
