Why has fantasy gone from a niche genre to nearly every blockbuster movie in theaters? Is this a coincednece, or an escape ramp from the reality of God, sin, and judgment? Kevin is joined by Danny Craig to trace that escapism straight into the young adult section of the local library. They test Gandalf, Radagast, and Madeleine L'Engle's witches against Scripture's standard for the true source of power, then offer six criteria for choosing books that point kids back to God instead of away from Him.
A new MP3 sermon from Generations Radio is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Is Fantasy Literature Escapism? Speaker: Kevin Swanson Broadcaster: Generations Radio Event: Radio Broadcast Date: 6/22/2026 Length: 39 min.

On the Get Obsessed podcast, host Mika Altidor interviews Stefano Siciliano, an American lifelong personal growth and spiritual path practitioner who began having spontaneous out-of-body experiences (OBEs) around age seven or eight and later learned to induce them. Inspired by Robert Monroe's books, Stefano trained at the Monroe Institute, became a trainer in Europe, helped bring the technology to Eastern Bloc countries after the Soviet Republic collapsed, and now supports and endorses Darius J. Wright's work. Stefano explains OBEs as normal and connected to sleep, dreams, and lucid dreaming, describing “mind awake, body asleep” as akin to deep meditation. He says conscious OBEs can transform one's view of identity, reality, death, and loss, and frames adversity as a catalyst that can push people toward availability for “what more is possible,” recommending Wright's online resources for further exploration. 00:00 Welcome and Intro 00:51 Stefano Background 01:31 Childhood OBEs 03:06 Monroe Institute Journey 03:54 Life Changes and Growth 04:57 Demystifying OBEs 05:53 Dreams Lucid and OBE 07:47 Mind Awake Body Asleep 09:13 Why It Matters 10:12 Seeing Your Body 12:13 Adversity as Teacher 15:15 Purpose in Suffering 20:20 Distortion and Chaos 23:29 Escapism and Cookoff Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What if addiction isn't the real problem? In this powerful and deeply honest conversation, Steve Adams sits down with author, speaker, and storyteller Jon Seidl to discuss his new book, Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic. Jon shares his journey through anxiety, trauma, addiction, recovery, and ultimately deeper intimacy with Christ.Together they explore why addiction often begins long before substance abuse, how unresolved wounds shape our behaviors, the danger of hidden struggles in the Church, and why true freedom comes not from behavior modification but from healing the deeper places of the heart.Whether your struggle is alcohol, work, pornography, approval, control, comfort, food, success, or something else entirely, this conversation is for you. As Jon says:"We're all addicted to something."Topics include:• Trauma and addiction• The role of shame in keeping people stuck• Why Christians often hide their struggles• Radical vulnerability and authentic community• Identity in Christ• Abiding in Jesus as the path to freedom• The concept of "messy sanctification"• Finding healing beneath the habitGuest:Jon Seidl: Author of Confessions of a Christian AlcoholicLearn more:https://www.jonseidl.com/confessions-of-a-christian-alcoholic-bookhttps://www.veritasrecovery.org/For more resources from Embracing Brokenness Ministries:https://embracingbrokenness.org/Chapter Markers00:00 Introduction: We're All Addicted to Something01:23 Meet Jon Seidl05:50 From Journalist to Storyteller09:30 Finding Rest and Mental Health13:40 Success Didn't Fix the Problem16:00 When Alcohol Became an Escape19:00 The Slow Fade into Addiction23:00 The Miami Trip That Changed Everything27:00 "Get to the Root of Why You're Drinking"29:00 Childhood Trauma and Hidden Wounds32:00 Letting Jesus Into Every Part of Your Story35:00 Why Jon Wrote This Book37:15 Four Steps Toward Freedom37:30 Abiding in Christ40:15 Finding Your True Identity43:00 Radical Vulnerability47:00 The Power of Obedience50:00 Escapism, Sobriety and Freedom52:00 Embracing Messy Sanctification56:00 The Healing Power of Community58:00 Veritas Recovery and Next Steps1:01:00 Final Encouragement

What are we really trying to escape from?In this episode of Girls Gone Gritty, Farley and Jennifer talk about escapism, from movie nights and travel dreams to social media, remote work, influencer culture, gaming, AI, and the quiet pull to disappear from everyday pressure. They explore why people are craving a different kind of life, especially in a world where everyone else's highlight reel can make your own routine feel small or stuck. The conversation also looks at the difference between healthy escape, like reading, exercising, watching a movie, or spending time with loved ones, and unhealthy escape that becomes avoidance, financial risk, or disconnection. Listeners will walk away with a simple reminder: escaping is not always bad, but it matters what you are escaping from and whether it brings you back stronger or leaves you further away from real life. The episode ends with a moving Got Grit Award story about kindness, loneliness, and the power of helping someone feel seen.Episode Highlights:(0:00) Intro(0:58) Celebrating birthdays, milestones, and summer(2:38) Blue Origin, Starlink, and space competition(4:19) Tomato prices, tariffs, and grocery costs(5:37) Spielberg nostalgia and movie theater memories(7:31) Why escapism is everywhere right now(9:12) When influencer dreams become risky(10:50) Remote work and changing life expectations(12:33) The hidden reality behind influencer life(14:18) AI, gaming, and virtual escape(15:45) Healthy vs. unhealthy escapism(17:38) When distraction turns into avoidance(18:40) Escapism, loneliness, and depression(20:04) The Got Grit Award kindness story(24:13) Fragile lyrics and final reflection(25:48) OutroSend us Fan MailSupport the showFollow us:Web: https://girlsgonegritty.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/girlsgonegritty/More ways to find us: https://linktr.ee/girlsgonegritty
Isaiah 53:3-6,” He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”Escapism is the tendency to seek distraction or relief from unpleasant realities, stress, responsibilities, or emotional discomfort. We ask, ' How may I work to get some real easy living?” "Man was made for truth, but truth is costly and mysterious. Therefore, many choose pleasure—not because it satisfies, but because it distracts."Isaiah 53:4,"Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows"JOHN 6:53-58,”53 So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread that came down out of heaven, not as the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever.”Charles Spurgeon, "Christ did not come merely that we might be better men, but that He might make us new men altogether."An invitation has been pronounced to enter into something new, different, better, the first and final plan.Faith in HIS suffering & gift.Hebrews 2:14-18,” 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore, he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”“Our bodies will break, and our blood will be spilled, but in Christ we have one who spilled the perfect blood and broke the perfect body that though we may suffer here on earth, it pales in comparison to what we have now received through one man's ultimate suffering.”ISAIAH 53 He carried our griefs He carried our sorrows He was wounded for us He was crushed for us He became all of our suffering, not for us to run & escape, but rather to stand with Him in freedom.1 PETER 3:18,”18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,”In suffering, we bring His work—not our escapePsalm 62:8 - “Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”In suffering, we look to Christ—not inward for answersHebrews 12:2 - “Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…”John Piper - “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”In suffering, we remain with Jesus—not away from HimJohn 15:4 - “Abide in Me, and I in you.”Acts 16:25 - “Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God in prison.”In suffering, we trust Jesus—not the outcomePhilippians 1:21 - “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”Romans 8:38–39 - “Nothing… will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.”
What You'll Hear in This Episode A Question That Hits Different Jahmaal opens with a question most people have never allowed themselves to answer honestly: Have you ever had something go right, and felt more anxious, not less? The cold open sets the tone for an episode built on radical self-honesty. The Chaos Blueprint - How Your Nervous System Got Wired Your childhood home wasn't just where you grew up, it was your first classroom in what ‘normal' feels like. Jahmaal breaks down how environments of unpredictability, emotional unavailability, and constant crisis train the nervous system to seek tension as a form of regulation. When your baseline is chaos, calm doesn't feel peaceful, it feels suspicious. Key insight: The brain doesn't chase what's good for you. It chases what's familiar. And familiar can be quietly destroying you. The Four Sabotage Patterns Jahmaal names the four most common ways unprocessed wounds show up as self-sabotage in adult life: 1. The Hyper-Guarded Heart Building walls so high that genuinely safe people can't get in, and then using their eventual exit as proof that no one can be trusted. 2. Creating Drama in the Calm Stirring conflict when things are running smoothly, not out of malice, but because the nervous system doesn't know how to trust stillness. 3. Escapism and Numbing Drifting into overwork, overindulgence, over-scrolling, or any behavior that keeps you slightly off-balance, because sitting in genuine peace means sitting with the feelings you've spent years outrunning. 4. Settling for Less Walking away from great opportunities and returning to the comfortable mediocre, not because something is wrong with the opportunity, but because a subconscious identity built in lack doesn't believe it gets to have great things. The Leadership Layer - Why This Is a Professional Conversation Too This isn't just personal development. For anyone in a position of leadership: executives, entrepreneurs, managers, coaches, pastors, parents; unprocessed wounds don't stay behind closed doors. They show up in: How you manage (or micromanage) your team Which opportunities you accept or quietly talk yourself out of Whether your culture is built on trust and vision, or fear and control How you respond when talented people begin to outpace your comfort zone The most expensive thing in any organization isn't a bad strategy. It's an unhealed leader. A sermon by the Very Rev. Sam Candler on the Seventh Sunday of Easter: the Sunday after the Ascension (May 17, 2026) at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta
Paul wasn't just helping people get to heaven. Nijay Gupta joins me to make the case that Paul's letters were written for people trying to figure out how to live, not how to escape. Drawing from his new book Paul for the World, Nijay walks through the Greco-Roman world Paul was writing into - its economic disparity, its philosophies, its hunger for meaning - and shows how we can see our world similarly. The conversation moves through economics, the arts, the Stoics, and the resurrection to land on a grounded, new creation vision of the Christian life. This is a conversation about meaning, hope, and what it looks like to be fully alive in the world God hasn't given up on.Nijay K. Gupta (PhD, Durham University) is Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He is the coauthor (with A. J. Swoboda) of the book Slow Theology, cohost of the Slow Theology podcast, and founder of the popular Substack newsletter Engaging Scripture. Gupta is an award-winning author of numerous books, including Tell Her Story, Strange Religion, and commentaries on Galatians, Philippians, Colossians, and 1 and 2 Thessalonians. He is also a senior translator for the New Living Translation. This week, we're reflecting on Mental Health Awareness Month. Today, Joe sits down with two mental health professionals to explore the powerful connection between reading, emotional well-being, and community. Split into two thoughtful segments, this episode invites listeners to reflect on how books, libraries, and small daily habits can support healing, growth, and a sense of stability in an often-overwhelming world. In the first segment, Joe is joined by Monica Hobson (aka: @thebookeduptherapist), a therapist and licensed clinical social worker whose work centers on the role of reading in our healing journeys. Together, they explore the idea that distraction isn't avoidance; it's a meaningful part of processing and recovery. They discuss the importance of self-care, how books can act as connectors between people and experiences, and how to quiet the pressure of “what should I read” in favor of what truly serves you. In the second segment, Joe speaks with Dr. Suzan Song, MD, PhD, about the broader impact of reading on both individuals and communities. Their conversation touches on personal and collective agency, building stability in uncertain times, and what Dr. Song wishes more people understood about mental health. She also shares why one of her first priorities in any new place is getting a library card and what that represents beyond just access to books. This episode is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and consider the role stories play in our lives; not just as entertainment, but as tools for connection, understanding, and healing. We kick things off with a genuinely baffling phenomenon: Erik gets stopped by strangers constantly — random people, random places, like he's low-key famous for reasons nobody can explain. Laura? Total ghost. Rarely recognized. Forget what you want to do before you die — we're talking about the things we absolutely, positively, never-in-a-million-years want to do. Skydiving? Our Anti Bucket Lists are very personal, surprisingly revealing, and deeply relatable. Laura tells the full saga of a spectacularly graceless fall that tweaked her foot — and the truly disproportionate drama that followed all the way to Mexico. We round things out with “Shitty Choices…” a game that goes deeper and darker and more horrifying than “Would You Rather.” Revealing, funny, shocking and jaw-dropping content. You know, the usual chaos that is our show. We appreciate your participation and you are family to us. Thanks for choosing to watch or listen every week. What if the things you turn to for fun, pleasure, and productivity are also the ways you avoid your life? In this episode, we explore escapism through a grounded, real-world lens. Not necessarily as a clinical issue, but as a pattern most of us fall into without realizing it. From constant busyness and social plans to sex, substances, and scrolling, it's never been easier to stay stimulated- and disconnected at the same time. We break down: Why escapism is so common (and why it makes sense) The difference between enjoyment and avoidance How to recognize when it shifts from choice to compulsion The hidden costs of always staying “on” Why a full life can still feel empty Join us for an eye-opening episode about understanding the spectrum of escapism… and what it might be helping you avoid. ️ Connection Circle: Slowing Down Without Falling Behind If this episode resonates, join Michael for a live Connection Circle where we explore how to slow down, be more intentional, and stay connected to your life… without feeling like you're falling behind. www.gaymensbrotherhood.com/events Today's Hosts: Matt Landsiedel Michael DiIorio - Take the 360° Self-Review for Gay Men Support the Show - viewer and listener support helps us to continue making episodes - CONNECT WITH US - Watch podcast episodes on YouTube Join the Gay Men's Brotherhood Facebook community Get on our email list to get access to our monthly Zoom calls Follow us on Instagram | TikTok Learn more about our community at GayMenGoingDeeper.com - LEARN WITH US - Building Better Relationships online course: Learn how to nurture more meaningful and authentic connections with yourself and others. We deploy Critical Harvest Theory in this episode, when we ask: What happens when we don't look critically at escapist fantasies? We then try to answer this question by looking at two video games: Stardew Valley (2015) and Citizen Sleeper (2022 & 2025) Going into the ways of how these games create their realities and end up surviving in or attempting to sideline capitalism, which will surely go well, right? Husband Help Haven Podcast: Marriage Advice for Men Facing Separation, Affair or Divorce
Most marriage problems aren't caused by terrible people — they're caused by blind spots. Habits you don't notice that are producing outcomes you can't see. In this episode, I break down five of the most common blind spots I see in the marriages of men I coach: your tone, domestic load, the self-care spectrum, yelling (and the +2 Rule), and your view of sex. Each one comes with a specific fix. If you're in separation, at least one of these probably played a role.

What if your restaurant wasn't just a place to eat, but a world people stepped into to feel something?Brandon Hoy didn't set out to build a pizza place, he set out to create a party, a refuge, a piece of living art in a neighborhood hungry for connection. As co-founder of Roberta's, he tapped into timing, tribe, and a radical commitment to craft to turn a scrappy Bushwick pizzeria into a cultural institution. In this conversation, we get into why community beats marketing, how mythology makes brands magnetic, and why defining what your restaurant means matters more than what it serves. Brandon breaks down the tension between consistency and evolution, and why the brands that survive are the ones willing to move with the wind.If you're building more than a menu—if you're building a movement—this conversation is for you.To learn more about Roberta's and explore what they're building next, visit robertaspizza.com._________________________________________________________Today's episode was brought to you by Square. Welcome back to another episode of the Couple Casuals Podcast! In this episode, Stefano sits down with Mike Van Wyck — entrepreneur, veteran of the fitness world, and one of the most influential voices in Canadian strength culture — for a raw, unfiltered conversation about training, discipline, masculinity, social media, and what it really means to stay grounded in a noisy world.Mike walks through his journey from competitive football and bodybuilding to working in high-level security, eventually becoming a respected fitness educator with a massive online following — all without ever chasing attention or internet fame. He explains how social media unexpectedly found him, not the other way aroundThroughout the episode, Stefano and Mike dive into:• Mike's early years in football, bodybuilding, and strength training• transitioning from private security into fitness education• why most modern fitness content creates confusion, not clarity• the rise of “analysis paralysis” in training and nutrition• peptides, steroids, and the dangerous shortcuts people take• why enjoyment and consistency matter more than optimization• the clash between old-school gym culture and social media fitness• filming culture, influencer economics, and false expectations• masculinity, discipline, and self-respect through physical effort• training through injuries, aging, and long-term sustainability• why the gym should be a place of presence — not escapismMike also opens up about public perception, controversy, and how quickly narratives form online — offering a rare, grounded look at how media snippets can overshadow years of character, discipline, and lived experience.Grab a casual, lock in, and let's get into it

this week on Delusional Diaries, Halley and Jaz are truly going to take you on a rollercoaster of chatting & beyond. from unexpectedly feeling way too much empathy during high-stakes sports games to realizing that escapism shouldn't cause anxiety, they unpack the little thoughts that spiral into way bigger conversations. what starts as football stress quickly turns into a debate about why caring too much can be exhausting, and why sometimes you just want your entertainment to be fun, not emotionally taxing.the girls also get into music moods, pop culture obsessions, and the shows that shaped them. from rethinking sad-girl playlists and romanticizing The Bold Type as peak twenties escapism, to loving Zara Larsson's comeback and needing to be “in on” whatever show the internet is obsessing over, it's a full deep dive into comfort culture. along the way, they talk celebrity sightings, influencer life, social media chaos, and the weird pressure of always being online.as always, the episode wraps with classic H & J shenanigans: procrastination confessions, friendship dynamics, hypothetical life questions, beauty honesty, and hot takes on cheating, botox, baby names, and becoming a “real” New Yorker. it's funny, self-aware, slightly unhinged, and very much giving “two best friends talking on the couch about everything and nothing” (exactly how we like it).Timestamps0:18 - Stressed about sports4:10 - Finding the happy songs 14:45 - Bitching hour 19:00 - Procrastinator (kinda of) 30:50 - Losing at an award show 45:26 - Reality TV show dating Links SeatGeek - Use our code for 10% off your next SeatGeek order*:https://seatgeek.onelink.me/RrnK/DELUSIONAL10 Sponsored by SeatGeek. What if the “dumb party metal” you grew up with turned out to be one of the sharpest mirrors of 1980s America? In this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, we sit down with author, professor, and 80s tribute-band guitarist Jesse Kavadlo to talk about his new book Rock of Pages: The Literary Tradition of 1980s Heavy Metal and why those songs about girls, demons, and good times were actually wrestling with nuclear fear, censorship, and what it meant to grow up under the Cold War.Jesse walks us through how 80s metal lyrics connect to classic literature, from Def Leppard reimagining Genesis and Paradise Lost to Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne grappling with existential dread, addiction, and the possibility of global annihilation. We dig into the PMRC hearings and satanic panic, the way MTV videos turned escapism into literal chains and magic portals, and how Stranger Things surprisingly nails the mix of danger and freedom that metal kids actually felt in the 80s. Along the way, we talk subculture vs. streaming-era playlists, why Dio and Iron Maiden might be the true heirs of Romantic poetry, and how heavy metal may have nudged the Cold War toward its end at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. If you care about 80s heavy metal, the MTV era, or just love thinking about how songs work under the hood, this episode is for you. Fans of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, Dio, and even Steel Panther's parody universe will hear this music in a new way. And if you're into how culture and politics collide in sound—think the way punk, hip-hop, or grunge carried the anxieties of their eras—you'll find a lot to chew on here too.Episode Highlights0:00 – Intro / Setting the stage How Jesse went from Brooklyn club stages and opening for Danger Danger to a PhD in literature and an 80s tribute band in St. Louis, and why 80s metal still gets written off as “by and for dummies” while Dylan and Kendrick win major literary prizes.5:12 – Are 80s metal lyrics actually literature? Cassette liner notes, goofy rhymes, and serious themes: Jesse breaks down how synecdoche, personification, metaphor, and symbolism show up in songs by Def Leppard, Metallica, and Twisted Sister.12:45 – PMRC, Tipper Gore, and the fight over teenage imagination We revisit the 1985 PMRC hearings, Dee Snider's testimony, and why “Under the Blade” and “Suicide Solution” say more about adult panic than teen corruption.20:30 – Cold War metal: Bon Jovi to Nuclear Assault How videos like Bon Jovi's “Runaway” and songs by Metallica, Ozzy, Megadeth, and Nuclear Assault carried nuclear anxiety, class conflict, and apocalyptic dread beneath all the hairspray.28:10 – Escapism, fantasy, and why Dio matters From Dungeons & Dragons to Iron Maiden and Dio, we explore metal's love of magic, fantasy, and portals as a deeply human response to a world that often felt unlivable.36:40 – MTV, chains, and the magic door We unpack the visual language of 80s metal videos: breaking out of asylums and prisons, falling through mirrors, and what it meant to “escape to the concert” once metal hit the mainstream.45:05 – Outsiders selling millions of records Why metal fans still felt like misfits even as the music dominated MTV, and how that outsider identity overlaps with the way readers and writers see themselves.52:30 – Van Halen, class struggle, and 1984 From “Running with the Devil” and “Jump” to “Hot for Teacher,” we look at David Lee Roth's working-class storytelling, school-as-prison imagery, and the eerie resonance of naming an album 1984 in the synth-drenched futureshock of the mid-80s.1:01:10 – Cowboys, Road Warriors, and the end of the world How metal videos borrowed from Escape from New York, The Road Warrior, and cowboy mythology to build a visual language of lawless survival and American ruggedness.1:09:45 – W.A.S.P., Nine Inch Nails, and moving the line What it means that W.A.S.P.'s “Animal (F*** Like a Beast)” got pulled from shelves while “Closer” became a critical darling, and how censorship lines shifted from the 80s to the 90s.1:18:20 – White Lion, Living Colour, and the politics hiding in band names We get into White Lion's unexpected political conscience, the uncomfortable optics of Pride, and how Living Colour wore their politics more explicitly.1:25:40 – How to listen differently after Rock of Pages Jesse explains how he hopes readers (and listeners) revisit 80s metal: with streaming open, videos queued up, and an ear tuned to metaphor, context, and the way these songs helped kids survive their era.1:33:50 – What's next and where to find the book Jesse hints at possible 90s projects and shares where to find Rock of Pages through Bloomsbury, indie bookstores, and the usual suspects. If this conversation makes you want to pull your old cassettes out of the box (or at least re-open your 80s metal playlist), don't stop here.Dive into the full archive of 70s & 80s metal episodes, history-of-the-band deep dives, and mixtapes at digmeoutpodcast.com.Join the DMO Union for bonus episodes, new release reviews, polls, and our private Discord community at dmounion.com.Subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with the friend who still swears 80s metal was “just for fun.” Let's prove, once and for all, that the music that raised us was doing a lot more than just partying. Grab your tissues and your matcha - we're doing a full 2025 emotional autopsy.Today I'm taking you through my personal year in review: space-cowgirl birthday parties, devastating loss, AI-induced mental glitches, and finally learning how to stop abandoning myself in relationships. This was one of the most plot twist-filled years I've ever had - like WTF happened?!Themes from the episode:The Cape Town summer that was pure lightning in a bottle - and why watching my entire friend group simultaneously couple up while I navigated complex relational issues sent me into an existential spiral about missing invisible boats.Setting the container and having THE scary conversation - how I stopped swallowing feelings to avoid looking "too sensitive," ugly-cried through total honesty, and learned that vulnerability won't actually kill you (even when your nervous system disagrees). When my friends passed in a rafting accident and grief rewired everything - and how loss demolishes your understanding of what actually matters. The AI creativity binge that nearly broke my brain - what happens when you're alone with no friends, no language skills, and only ChatGPT validating your 47th brand iteration until everything you're obsessed with feels boring and nothing matters anymore (scary AF)Maturity as staying put instead of booking another escape flight - why I'm extending in Lima, joining local studios, and forcing myself to deal with shit instead of using travel as emotional avoidance (growth! so sexy!).My 2025 was an invitation to stop performing identities that don't fit me anymore, start saying what I mean, befriending my demons, and contemplating my 200 year plan. Let's spiral together :)Connect with Chelsea:
I don't like to turn my brain off when enjoying a movie, show, or book. For me, the point has never been to “escape” the real world or be off in La-La Land; it's to think more deeply. If a story isn't engaging me on the level of morality, ethics, political thought….I get kind of bored. So, I've always criticized fellow fans of, say, Star Wars, who argue in the comments that they expect a story to offer “escapism.” It's possible that, according to Tolkien, I'm wrong about this. Today I sat down to read a few pages of On Fairy-stories, an essay by JRR Tolkien about the question of “escape” and how good stories are anything but…..This is early exclusive for subscribers on Substack and the Discord community, and then it will be posted on YouTube next week.
