Jonathan Abrams - New York Times bestselling author of “Boys Among Men” and “All the Pieces Matter” and award-winning staff reporter for The New York Times. In “THE COME UP: An Oral History of the Rise of Hip-Hop,” he offers the definitive account of hip-hop's ascendancy - a multi-decade chronicle told in the voices of the people who made it happen. He joins Tavis to unpack his newest text.
As an 11-year old kid growing up in the L.A. suburbs, writer Jonathan Abrams managed to wheedle a Tupac Shakur cassette from a sympathetic Circuit City employee. When his mom discovered the tape with its parental advisory sticker, she made him return it, but that didn't deter Abrams' love for hip-hop. In his new oral history of hip-hop “The Come Up,” Abrams goes back to the genre's roots and traces its iterations, innovations, and impact on not just music, but global culture. We'll talk to Abrams and hear from you, who's your go to hip-hop artist and what's on your essential hip-hop playlist? Guests: Jonathan Abrams, "The Come Up: An Oral History of the Rise of Hip-Hop," Abrams is a staff writer for the New York Times and author of "All the Pieces Matter: The Inside Story of the Wire" and "Boys Among Men.

The definitive, never-before-told story of the prep-to-pro generation, those basketball prodigies who from 1995 to 2005 made the jump directly from high school to the NBA. When Kevin Garnett shocked the world by announcing that he would not be attending college—as young basketball prodigies were expected to do—but instead enter the 1995 NBA draft directly from high school, he blazed a trail for a generation of teenage basketball players to head straight for the pros. That trend would continue until the NBA instituted an age limit in 2005, requiring all players to attend college or another developmental program for at least one year. Over that decade-plus period, the list of players who made that difficult leap includes some of the most celebrated players of the modern era—Garnett, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Tracy McGrady, and numerous other stars. It also includes notable “busts” who either physically or mentally proved unable to handle the transition. But for better or for worse, the face of the NBA was forever changed by the prep-to-pro generation. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

There was no rule against it but, with rare exceptions, high school players just weren't taken in the NBA draft. Then 1995 happened, Kevin Garnett exploded onto the scene and for the next ten years prep stars invaded late June. It only lasted a decade but the ramifications are still being felt all over the Association. The Charlotte Hornets will always be linked with this time. They drafted Kobe Bryant out of high school in 1996. They helped change the narrative of the first prep star ever to be taken with the 1st overall pick, Kwame Brown. And they still have a prep-to-pro star on their roster in Al Jefferson. We speak with Jonathan Abrams, author of the new book Boys Among Men, about this remarkable time in NBA history and Hornets' history. PLUS We recap a tough Hornets loss to the Cavaliers and update you on the latest surround Nicolas Batum and Al Jefferson's injuriesInside the Locker Room gets several players thoughts on the transition from high school and college to the NBA as a rumored extension of the current age limit looms over labor talksIf it went down in the NBA, Nick Denning is going to find out about it. Kobe Bryant. Kevin Garnett. LeBron James. They are the most captivating players of the past couple decades in the NBA — and they all went straight from high school to the NBA. But there were a lot of others that had nice careers, and some who flamed out. Jonathan Abrams new book "Boys Among Men" takes a detailed look at the high school to NBA generation, and he joins NBC's Kurt Helin to discuss that trend, what happened to the players, and the future of the one-and-done rule.
The wait is over. Jonathan Abrams’ highly anticipated book ”Boys Among Men: How the Prep-to-Pro Generation Redefined the NBA and Sparked a Basketball Revolution,” is finally out! In it, he expertly chronicles the impact of the players who came to the NBA directly from high school before the rule was changed after the 2005 draft.
