When H.G. Wells penned the classic 1898 science fiction novel The War of the Worlds, he could scarcely have predicted that in the futuristic year of 2025, a man named Ice Cube would be starring in a desktop cinema adaptation of the novel. Even Orson Welles, with all his imagination, when he produced the 1938 Mercury Theatre radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds, couldn't have conceived that in 2025, a tech company called Amazon would create a Prime Video adaptation of the story featuring a surveillance expert that utilizes the Amazon Prime delivery service in order to save the world. No one could've predicted what dropped onto Amazon Prime Video on July 30, 2025. Due to popular demand, we fast-tracked this episode so we can tell what we watched so that you never have to watch it!

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay skip fourth period to go trip off some H.F.S. before talking about '21 Jump Street.' Ice Cube plays, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officer Will Radford as he works for a government surveillance program that can monitor every person on Earth. His relationship with his pregnant daughter Faith and son Dave is strained due to his use (abuse?) of the program to constantly monitor them. While helping FBI agents try to find a mysterious hacker, known as "Disruptor", meteors begin striking all over the planet. When large machines emerge from the meteorites and start attacking humans, Will and his friend Sandra (Eva Longoria) from NASA conclude it is an alien invasion. Can Will stop spying on his own kids long enough to figure out a way to end the invasion? Tune and and find out how we made fun of this cinematic disaster!

Sparse highway, light rain ambience. We are on the side of a small road just outside town. It's night, and it's raining. Imagine you're a content Gene Kelly walking home after frolicking around main. Or Feel free to ruminate. That's the general vibe around here. There's a movie theater nearby showing cat videos (for a good cause) and it's practically sold out. Catvideofest 2025 is repackaged cat timeline videos on a gigantic screen. And that it is pretty much sold out this weekend says something about our collective mood. Anyway, I did manage to get tickets and me my youngest will share an auditorium with a Spider-verse amount of other people.That's all from me — Oh, so if I controlled the universe for a day aside from solving every important global issue I would want to sneak a cameo of Ice Cube into that animated Will Smith fish movie that also stars Katie Couric as “Katie Current.” But I would add in Ice Cube so he could be like “even saw the lights of the Goodyear Blimp and it read ‘Ice Cube's a shrimp.'” Which may occur in that movie, I haven't seen it. New plan: I'm bringing back that short-lived trend from early-pandemic days that social media tried to cook up — shoe-kicking as greeting. I only saw people on my phone doing that dumb ****. I want to ingrain into humans that shoe-kicking is now retroactively high-five. Every famous high-five from history now feet kicking. From the business meetings to competitive sports. We end our Jaws series with two films from the ‘90s that launched the animal attack genre into the 21st Century.    First, Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight go up the Amazon to find a giant snake in ANACONDA (1997) and then Samuel L. Jackson, Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows and LL Cool J encounter genetically enhanced super-sharks in DEEP BLUE SEA (1999).

If you ever needed a reminder that some remakes shouldn't exist, 2025's War of the Worlds delivers it in spades. This is not just a bad movie—it's the kind of cinematic faceplant that makes you wonder how anyone signed off on it. The acting is flat-out terrible, with Ice Cube headlining in a role that feels less like a performance and more like someone wandered onto set after being told he was shooting a different movie. The whole thing reeks of miscasting, misdirection, and missed opportunities. The real insult, though, is how aggressively this film relies on the “Idiot Plot”, a story that only moves forward because every single character makes the dumbest possible choice at every possible moment. Characters stand around waiting to get vaporized, make suicidal detours for no reason, and never once act like actual human beings dealing with an alien apocalypse. It's not suspenseful, it's not dramatic—it's just aggravating to sit through. Visually and tonally, the film is stuck in a post-COVID hangover haze. The world feels small, tired, and drained of life, not in a gritty, artistic way, but in a “we shot this at our desks because we couldn't go outside” kind of way. The whole thing becomes an unintentional time capsule of how much the pandemic gutted creativity and ambition. Watching it is like staring into the ghost of an industry still trying to find its footing—and tripping over itself at every step. Ultimately, 2025's War of the Worlds isn't just a bad remake, it's a sad reminder of what happens when you try to drag a classic into the present without talent, vision, or even basic competence. It's noisy without being exciting, dumb without being fun, and joyless to the core. If the aliens really wanted to wipe us out, the fastest method would have been just screening this movie to humanity on loop.

Steph, John, Steve & Dave put down their phones for screen time with Ice Cube and his (fictional) family! The War of the Worlds has been adapted many times since its first publication in 1898, and each adaptation represented the era in which it was created -- Famously as a radio show in 1938 and the first movie in 1953 when there were national fears of military invasion … then as a Spielberg film in 2005 when there was a national fear of terrorist invasion… And now in 2025 when there's a national fear of invasion of Privacy! It's Amazon Prime's feature length commercial – War of the Worlds!  Here's the rapid recap to catch you up!  Ice Cube plays Will Radford, DHS Agent and creepster dad who should have been DOGE'd out of his job, because he spends his day stalking his two estranged children – his pregnant daughter, Faith and his intense Gen-Z-er son Dave. When mysterious meteors crash into the Earth, it's up to these three plus Faith's fiancé and Amazon delivery driver, Mark as well as Eva Longoria (whose character's name I don't know and I couldn't quickly see it on Wikipedia, so I'm giving her as much attention as Will gives her in the movie, which is to say close to none) … Anyway, when machines from Mars rise out of the meteor craters, our heroes realize that the aliens are here to chew bubblegum and steal our data…and they are all out of bubblegum.
