We've been on a run of serious films, so it was time to mix in a Western comedy. At least, that's what this movie is supposed to be, but this is a comedy without a whole lot of jokes. We have some diverging opinions on this one, mostly coming down to the script, because this should be a much better movie than it is. But you can bet we both agree that James Garner is one of the most charming cutie-pies ever. Make sure to order the bars for the jail while we watch Support Your Local Sheriff! on Have a Good Movie! I am reluctant to post much of anything about the current armed conflict in Gaza. As the saying goes, the first casualty in war is the truth, and the truth of this saying is manifest in Gaza. It is almost impossible to separate information from information operations by either side. The International Committee of the Red Cross cites allegations of grave beaches of the law of war by both sides. In previous episodes I described how war crimes make reaching peace even more difficult than it usually is. Nonetheless, if achieving peace seems insurmountable, a cease fire leading to non-kinetic conflict resolution may be possible if we listen and put pressure on each sides stated war aims.   These podcasts do not necessarily represent the views of the Department of Defense, the Army War College, or any other organization I am associated with     Music Liszt, F. and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Totentanz, https://download.stream.publicradio.org/podcast/minnesota/classical/programs/free-downloads/2020/10/27/daily_download_20201027_128.mp3?listeningSessionID=0CD_382_200__6cca22efd3d270af449f392040641d0331631df3 Copland, A. & United States Marine Band. CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of sex work, sexual assault. Spaghetti westerns are their own unique style, their own flavor, and one of the key issues is the dialogue is almost always sloppy and cheesy. Yet Sergio Leone, a true master of filmmaking, took that to a different artistic height, and really made it perfect with this film. This film is impeccably shot, with spans of John Ford's favorite locations that would make the father of the genre salivate. The cast is top notch, with a truly evil villain made all the more bad by the fact that they got America's Dad to play him. The only thing missing is punchier dialogue, but when it comes to Leone, it's worth the eye rolls to wait for the next incredible shot. It seems that the time has come in Putin's war on Ukraine that both sides indicate a willingness to negotiate. But negotiate what? This episode moves on from what is necessary for a sustainable peace, what Putin's real goals are in his war on Ukraine, and propose a possible path forward. I introduced this possible path in In Episode 104. This episode sets that idea in the context of the previous two episodes and the recent political and military developments. The MASKS AND MUSIC: THE FILMS OF WILLI FORST strand of last year's Il Cinema Ritrovato, curated by Lukas Foerster, was so popular that I was unable to see any of them. Richard is more organised and came out raving about two: MASQUERADE/ MASKERADE (1934) and TOMFOOLERY/ ALLOTRIA, (1936). Luckily for us The Internet Archive has a very good copy of Maskerade which enabled us to see it (or in Richard's case, to see it again). In the podcast below we talk about the film in relation to the Wiener Genre, Authorship, Anton Walbrook's career (he is here billed as Adolf Walbrook), the difficulties of dealing with works from authoritarian regimes, how it was the most popular film of its year in the German-speaking world. More specifically we discuss the rhythms of the opening scene, Anton Walbrook's introduction, the narrative invention of the narration of the publication of the muff drawiing, the mise-en-scéne, the influence of vaudeville and the film's intent on pleasing. We relate the film to Lubitsch's work and comment on how a particular shot of a camera seeming to float through a window might have influenced Minnelli (in Meet Me in St. Louis) and, according to Mark Fuller, Powell & Pressburger (The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp). All this and much more may be listened to in the podcast below:

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of brownface. If this movie is the rebirth of the Western, it'd be hard to tell because it's a real mess. It's a classic, and it absolutely makes sense why, but it's also a total mess of a film. No one knows what movie they're supposed to be in, the script is missing a ton of connective tissue, and Steve McQueen has the audacity to be bad at acting and an insufferable tool. Still, Yul Brynner and Charles Bronson are total badasses, and this Western via samurai flick manages to be a little entertaining. But really, just go watch Seven Samurai instead. Although diplomacy should not end when fighting begins, there are two conditions in war where one or more parties will seek to negotiate peace. One is when victory looks improbable, the other is when it looks certain. Which of these conditions is emerging in Ukraine? More importantly, which of these two conditions does Putin perceive as operative? In either condition, is negotiation leading to a sustainable peace realistic? Answering that question requires understanding what Putin really wants from his war, and what he will accept to get out of it.   Reference: Samuel Charap, Khrystyna Holynska, Russia's War Aims in Ukraine, http://www.rand.org/t/RRA2061-6   Music: Holst, “The Planets: Mars Bringer of War,” downloaded from the Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/lp_holst-the-planets_gustav-holst-leopold-stokowski-los-angeles

PART II: How Deep Is the Ocean: Larry Schnell on A Sailor's Song FEATURED ON WRFIWRFI's Roger Kimmel Smith interviews author and professor Larry Schnell about his book A Sailor's Song: Lost Love Letters of World War II, on a special edition of “Crazy Words, Crazy Tune.” The newly released book portrays the U.S. Coast Guard U.S.S. General A.W. Greely, the war's most musical ship, as it transports troops to and from the war in Asia. This two-hour broadcast features Smith's extended interview with Schnell, along with 1940s music, news clips, and other historic audio with narration. The roles played by music and musicians during wartime is the central theme of this radio documentary, which aired August 8, 2025, in observance of the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, toward the end of World War II.Larry Schnell's father, Arthur Schnell, was a Coast Guard Musician Third Class who described his wartime experiences in letters to his wife, Flo Schnell, a civilian musician and music teacher. Before shipping out aboard the Greely in 1945, he served at the Manhattan Beach Coast Guard Training Station in Brooklyn, New York. Arthur Schnell played trombone in the Manhattan Beach Coast Guard Band, alongside a dozen or so other musicians profiled in A Sailor's Song. The group made several recordings which were released at the time on V-Discs. These performances are in the public domain and, as Roger discovered while doing research for the interview, remain available today through the Internet Archive. Author Schnell was thus able to listen for the first time to the music his father and comrades had made—and WRFI listeners will have this opportunity as well. This audio documentary with Larry Schnell aired on August 8th 2025 from 12-2pm EST, hosted by WRFI DJ Roger Smith during his regular 'Crazy Words, Crazy Tune' Friday show.

Today Professor Kozlowski takes on the political philosophy of the Medieval (and early modern) Christian world, as a cross-section of ideas and interpretations made by Christian political philosophers. Our readings for today hail from:City of God by Augustine of HippoSumma Theologica by Thomas Aquinas"Temporal Authority: To What Extent it Should be Obeyed" by Martin Luther (requires a free Internet Archives account to borrow)Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin (Chapter XIX: par. 15 and Chapter XX: On Civil Government, par. I, II, III, and XXIX)Along the way we'll encounter a wide variety of different interpretations of Biblical theology, and an even wider variety of applications for Christians trying to figure out how to live their lives in secular society. And we might even find some surprise cameos by ideas thought to originate in later, less Christian times.Additional readings this week mostly surround historical events, but I recommend Dante's De Monarchia and, for my gamers, Crusader Kings II (I haven't played III yet, but it's probably also good...)If you're interested in Professor Kozlowski's other online projects, check out his website: professorkozlowski.wordpress.com

Our next film should, by all rights, be one of the greatest all-time Westerns even made. Instead, it's a mealy-mouthed, boring, limp noodle of a movie that's stuck trying too hard to be a Big Deal instead of being the allegory for McCarthyism it was written to be. Fred Zinneman has shots for days, but he can't get convincing performances from his actors, and nobody in the cast can convincingly portray the real tension of this movie. Sure, it makes sense why this resonates today. But overall it's a real slog to sit through. Watch the clocks as we watch 1952's High Noon on Have a Good Movie! Bildtext: Unionstrupper ur general William T.H. CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of racism against Natives, bullying, animal cruelty. Grab your six shooters and your saddles, we're kicking off our first-ever Westerns series! There's a lot in the genre for us to catch up on, and we start this week with a seminal film, one whose importance is unfortunately the only thing it's really got going for it. John Ford practically created the Western as we know making this movie but the dialogue and the characters are so rigid that it's somehow boring for a 90-minute movie. Still, if you've ever rolled your eyes at John Wayne and wondered "how the hell did he get to be a movie star", look no further than his performance here, smoldering and intense while staying relatable. The cast is pretty great, and the stunts are on par with anything that can be done with wires today. Still, this one is more "important" than a fun hang, so proceed with caution. A growing concern among digital commentators is whether artificial intelligence is irreversibly distorting the internet. Once a conspiracy, dead internet theory now reflects widespread anxiety about AI-generated content and its impact on online authenticity. AI-written articles, spam-like social posts and misinformation have contributed to fears that human-created content is being overwhelmed. Alex Hern, AI writer at The Economist, explains how user behaviour mimicking algorithms helped the idea take root, while Isis Blachez from NewsGuard outlines how Russian-linked sites are laundering propaganda to influence AI outputs. Mark Graham, Director of the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive, describes how the organisation is adapting its efforts to preserve online content in a post-AI era. Christiane Amanpour, CNN's Chief International Anchor, reflects on changes to the news industry since she began reporting during the first Gulf War. From accusations of “fake news” by political leaders to the challenges of reporting on the Gaza conflict amid restrictions on access, she describes unprecedented pressures on international journalism. Amanpour also discusses her new foreign affairs podcast co-hosted with her ex-husband and former US diplomat James Rubin, The Ex Files. Presenter: Ros Atkins Producer: Lucy Wai Assistant Producer: Martha Owen

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of sexual abuse of minors by clergy. While no explicit mentions are made of actions or abuse, listener discretion is advised. This one has been on our must watch list since it came out, and somehow it lingered for 10 years. In fact, you might suspect we did this series just to watch this movie, and you'd be at least a little bit right. Fortunately, the film doesn't disappoint, taking the well-worn movie journalism formula and taking it in a completely different direction. This movie is all about subtlety, accuracy, and most of all, real human storytelling. There's very few frills involved and very few liberties taken, which is the perfect way to tell the story of uncovering one of the most heinous abuses of power and trust in human history. There's no hero worship and no easy answers here, just plain great storytelling. No wonder it won Best Picture. We're finish on a high note with 2015's Spotlight on Have a Good Movie! CONTENT WARNING: occupation, assassination, Israel & Palestine. We try not to be too political on this show, but sometimes a movie forces our hand. Still, Spielberg's third labor of love isn't a mess because of its subject matter. Instead, it's a messy rush job that has little to no historical value and also fails at being an entertaining movie. Nothing about this story passes the smell test, down to the fact that it looks like a crappy action movie from 2005. We know you can do better, Steven.
