In this week's basketball coaching conversation, Charlotte Hornets Assistant Coach DJ Bakker joins the Basketball Podcast to share insights on offensive concepts vs. switching.DJ Bakker is the Head Coach of the Greensboro Swarm and an Assistant Coach with the Charlotte Hornets, bringing over a decade of NBA coaching experience and a proven track record in player development and team success. In the 2024–25 season, Bakker led the Swarm to their first playoff appearance in franchise history, finishing with a 31–19 record—best in team history and fourth overall in the G League. Under his leadership, the Swarm ranked third in Defensive Rating, top five in Net Rating, and first in both Clutch Net Rating and Offensive Rating. His dual role with the Hornets included overseeing the development of young NBA talent, including 2024 sixth overall draft pick Tidjane Salaun. Before joining the Hornets organization, Bakker served as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2023–24 season. He played a key role in shaping the team's offensive identity to maximize the strengths of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, while also working individually with Khris Middleton and Malik Beasley. That season, the Bucks finished fifth in Offensive Rating and Bakker was part of the coaching staff for both the 2024 NBA All-Star Game and the playoffs. His G League success began with the Motor City Cruise, where he led the team to a 31–15 record in its inaugural season and a playoff berth, while developing five future NBA players.Bakker's coaching journey includes player development roles with the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, and Dallas Mavericks, where he worked with emerging stars like Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby. He also served as an advance scout for the Orlando Magic and began his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls. His foundation in skill development was shaped at ATTACK Athletics under Tim Grover, where he trained over 35 NBA players. Known for his adaptability, communication, and tactical clarity, Bakker continues to build competitive, development-focused environments at both the NBA and G League levels.

Aviation News Spain rules out F-35 order, prioritizes Eurofighter and FCAS The Spanish Ministry of Defense has decided to “prioritize investment in European industry” and will consider the Eurofighter Typhoon or the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) over the Lockheed Martin F-35. The Spanish government wants to replace its aging fleet of McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets and AV-8B Harrier II aircraft. Previously, the F-35 was considered a leading candidate. Talks with Lockheed Martin are now suspended. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, courtesy F35.com. Other potential foreign F-35 customers, including Canada and Portugal, have signaled doubts about joining the American-led program amid geopolitical strain with the Trump administration. Swiss lawmakers are calling for the government to cancel a $9.1 billion order for Lockheed Martin's F-35 stealth fighter. Denver to look at nuclear option for power at Denver International Airport The Denver airport (DIA) “issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to study the feasibility of building a small modular (nuclear) reactor (SMR) on the DEN campus. The study is part of DEN's overall efforts to meet future clean energy demands.” A new Colorado law reclassifies nuclear energy as a clean energy resource. See the press release: DEN to Pursue More Alternative Energy Options for Future Needs and A nuclear reactor at the Denver airport? Here's what you need to know. Professor Thomas Albrecht, director of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Center at the Colorado School of Mines, said, "The idea, with many of the small modular reactors, is you can drive them up on a semi. put them down on a concrete pad and plug them in, and they just go. The idea of many of these designs is you could keep adding them." The study will cost up to $1.25 million and is expected to take between 6-12 months to complete, at which time DEN, along with its partners, will evaluate the findings and determine next steps. NASA Administrator Reflects on Passing of Astronaut Jim Lovell Astronaut James A. Lovell was a pioneering NASA astronaut best known as the commander of Apollo 13 and as one of the first humans to orbit the Moon, having flown a total of four space missions—Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13—more than any astronaut in NASA's early years. Astronaut James A. Lovell, NASA. Gemini 7 (1965): Set an endurance record of nearly 14 days in orbit and accomplished the first rendezvous of two manned spacecraft, a vital maneuver for Moon missions. Gemini 12 (1966): Commanded the final Gemini mission, featured Buzz Aldrin as pilot, and executed complex extravehicular activities, closing the Gemini program successfully. Apollo 8 (1968): Served as Command Module Pilot for the first crewed mission to leave Earth's orbit and enter lunar orbit, making him and his crewmates the first humans to orbit the Moon and see its far side. Apollo 13 (1970): Commanded the ill-fated lunar mission that suffered a catastrophic explosion en route, forcing a dramatic turnaround and Moon flyby. His leadership in crisis turned it into an inspirational story of survival; Lovell and his crew made it back safely, an event celebrated worldwide and dramatized in the 1995 film "Apollo 13". Teams with sustained struggles like the Wizards deserve better draft positions to genuinely rebuild rather than rewarding teams experiencing temporary setbacks or intentionally tanking.• NBA currently bases draft lottery odds on just the previous season's performance• WNBA uses the previous two seasons' records to determine lottery odds• Washington Wizards finished second-worst in consecutive seasons but only received the sixth pick• Two-season approach would make tanking much more difficult and less appealing• 76ers receiving the third pick despite having Joel Embiid raises questions about equitable distribution• Teams genuinely struggling for multiple years (Wizards, Hornets, Jazz) would benefit most from a two-season system• Analysis of how WNBA teams' draft positions would change under different systems• A longer evaluation period ensures help goes to teams that truly need itPlease like, subscribe, comment, and tell anyone who's anyone about the show. These are similar—but also very different upright naked sportbikes from the Big Red. The 750 is a parallel twin, and the 1000 is an inline-4. It might seem obvious which bike has the greater appeal, but I guarantee you there are some real surprises from Matt on how both of these bikes performed, and where they excel.    *  *  *  *  * Have you checked out Insta360, the leader in 360-degree action camera technology? Their latest camera, the Insta360 X5, shoots in all directions at once in incredible 8K30 resolution. Just hit record, focus on your ride, and then find the best angles in the edit with Insta360's mobile app—it's easy, smooth, and packed with AI tools to make it easy and super-fast. And as if that wasn't enough, now the Summer Update brings together a series of innovations that make X5 even more powerful, versatile, and intuitive than ever before. New features like AdaptiveTone, gives smart exposure in complex lighting situations; and with the latest firmware update, the standard battery now offers an even longer runtime. As you might know, Freeman is a big fan of motorcycle travel, and there's nothing he likes more than to take off with a few of his buddies and take a road less traveled. Teejay chats with him about his latest adventure through the mountains of Colorado and ultimately to Moab, Utah. He rode a KTM 890 Adventure, with several modifications to help survive the adventure. The group definitely got into some scrapes, but (spoiler alert) they did actually survive to fight again another day. The route is actually listed as the Colorado BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route) and you can check it for yourself either at Butler Maps or at RideBDR.com.    *  *  *  *  * Here's a quick reminder to leave us your comments on our social media—we're on all the usual platforms at Ultimate Motorcycling. 0:00 ... Show Open ... Ross welcomes the panel and makes his dedication of show #166 to Jonathan Kuminga and Russell Westbrook who both shot just 66% from the free throw line last season.  Bruce registers his disappointment with Ross's choice and suggests someone else. 1:54 ... The Charlotte Hornets are the NBA Summer League Champions ... Rookie Kon Knueppel led the way for the Hornets and we all learned the proper pronounciation of his first and last name.  The future looks promising for the Hornets after a string of losing seasons, but health will be a huge issue for the "Bugs." 7:53 ... Bruce wants to give some love to Bronny James, who looked like a different player in the Summer League and could be poised to do well this season. 9:04 .... The WNBA All Star Weekend made all kinds of news, especially with their warmup T-Shirts that said "Pay Us What You Owe Us."  The crew examines why the players in the "W" deserve more money and make suggestions on who should pay it. 13:09 ... As for the WNBA All Star game itself ..... it was a big bummer ... Rookie All-Star Paige Bueckers and ABC's Elle Duncan both trashed it on the air for the lack of defense and effort .... OUCH. 15:29 ... Bradley Beal certainly got paid and also got a ticket out of Phoenix to Los Angeles.  His departure from the Valley leaves lots of wreckage behind as the Suns will need to stretch $97 million of his salary over the next 5 seasons, causing a major financial hurdle for a team that needs more talent.  As for the Clippers, they have a lot of old dudes and are a textbook example of a "Win Now" team.  And with the addition of 40 year old Chris Paul, the clock is definitely ticking on the veteran team's "window." 22:00 ... With all the old guys on the Clippers, the crew suggests sponsors whose logos can appear on the uniform jerseys of the team.  Everyone took a shot and Ross's choice of "Depends" adult diapers was the clear winner among the crew. 23:40 ... 35 year old Damian Lillard is returning to the Portland Trailblazers and with the recent acquisition of another 35 year old guard, Jrue Holiday, the 48 Minutes crew is scratching their collective heads as to what the strategy of the team will be.  Does it mean that Scoot Henderson is on shaky ground with the Blazers? 28:56 ... Ross leads a discussion on Giannis and whether any of these moves might make him appreciate being in Milwaukee. 31:42 ... Former Celtic Marcus Smart will soon join the Lakers after being bought out by the Wizards.  Bruce and many other Celtics fans are all "up in their feelings" over this move. 35:05 ... Victor Wembanyama has been cleared to play again after suffering from blood clots in his shoulder last season.  These are exciting times in San Antonio with Wemby joining Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper on a team that will be a "League Pass Obsession." 37:53 ... The New Orleans Pelicans are looking like a hot mess tossed into a dumpster fire.  They've spent the entire off season making one questionable move after another.  Over the weekend, their top rookie Derik Queen suffered a wrist injury that will sideline him for three months.  New boss Joe Dumars is off to a "bumpy" start to say the least. 42:35 ... Good news in Denver .... recently acquired Jonas Valanciunas has agreed to stop his pursuit of a deal with a team in Greece and will play for the Nuggets as the backup for Nikola Jokic.  It's the right thing to do and the Denver fans deserve his best effort, even if he just plays one season for the Nuggets. 45:24 .... This week it's Ross's turn to try and stump his partners with this week's "Card Challenge."  Some of the players that Ross used to put Bruce and "World B" on the spot were Brandon Roy, Marcus Camby, Yao Ming, David Lee, Gary Payton, Andre Iguodala, Bruce Bowen, and Dwight Howard. 53:48 ... Ross wraps things up and says goodbye ... TRT 54:05
