Steven Henderson is a craft beer rockstar. He goes by the moniker Hendo and he's one of the best-known personalities in the Australian craft beer industry. Well-loved and well-respected. And, from what I can tell, well-deserved. He started a contract, or gypsy, brewing brewery called Brewcult. He pushed the boundaries of what people in Australia considered craft beer. He won awards for great beer, expanded distribution and travelled the country living the life of a National beer celebrity. And then the whole thing came crashing down, leaving a spectacular hole in the Australian craft beer scene. And, of course, a rough patch in Hendo's personal life. But this story ends with a win as we'll hear in the 5th segment. Hendo has gone back to why he loved the industry in the first place. Selling beer was never his passion, it was making the best beer he could. As Australia's rockstar brewer, it was only fitting that he would start the Rockstar Brewer Academy. Like me, he's focused on making the industry better. Unlike me he's focused on doing it by mentoring and coaching brewers all over the world to make better beer. And now, here's the emotional, inspiring story of Steve, “Hendo” Henderson” and Australia's late BrewCult Brewing Company. The big grudge match between the Coolroom and Ian McNally's inferior podcast the Chosen Brew became so big that we had to split it into two episodes! After a spiteful opening exchange with McNally our heroes Warren, Travis and Davydd get back to doing what they do best - interviewing the leading lights of the Australian Brewing Industry. We chat with our good friend Kumar from Deeds, find out how things have being going with Modus Operandi and have a surprising chat with Panhead which leads to some secrets about Brewcult legend Hendo being revealed! We then round things out with Troy and Shane who managed to taste every beer on offer - what did they nominate as the top 5 beers of GABS? Which podcast will have the upper hand in the big retirement match at the end of episode 1? Listen on to find out!
In Part 2 of the Brewery Consulting & Quality Management Segment, I chat with well known figure in the brewing community Steve Hendo from Rockstar Brewer. If you haven't heard of Steve Hendo, he famously made his name in the brewing community as the founder of the BrewCult brand. Hendo did the gyspy brewing model for many years and built a massive cult following with his beers eventually developing a big core range exciting beer geeks all over the country with his innovate beer styles. Eventually things didn't quite go to plan for Hendo with the BrewCult brand which he explains in more intimate detail in our chat, in which he then decided to take a step back from running a brewing business to just working in the industry, by having a stint at Stone & Wood as a shift production brewer. After finding his feet, and deciding on what next is in store for him in the Beer Industry he then began consulting breweries on best brewing practices and quality processes for their beer production which gave birth to his current business Rockstar Brewer. Hendo does not hold any punches and is brutally honest about what it takes to open and run a successful brewery. He shares his mistakes, challenges and lessons learnt from his BrewCult days and he discusses the importance of Quality Management controls and processes for breweries and how he helps breweries both new and established to ensure high quality beer is being produced batch to batch.EPISODE LINKS:Rockstar Brewer WebsiteVisit us at www.buildmeabrewery.com.au and sign up to our mailing list to be the first to know when episodes launch plus exclusive Brewery Building Content. Also like and follow us on FacebookBuild Me A Brewery Facebook PageBuild Me A Brewery Discussion Group
Mention the name Tim Fishwick around the craft beer industry and I reckon you will get a nod from the person you are speaking with. Why, well by all accounts he's a good bloke and let's be honest, he's been around the traps a bit…in a good way though.Tim's career has seen him go from flogging pallets of Tooheys to being involved in a number of smaller craft breweries. He's been a Creature and a member of the all conquering team at Balter, but for some reason earlier this year he decided to walk away from hanging out with the lads on the Goldy and do his own thing. There's been a few whispers about what he has been up to in recent months, and we had to put this podcast off to make sure everything was all progressing and he could actually speak about it.So in a world exclusive, Tim Fishwick would like to let the world in on his "secret" plans to start a brewery!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
Steve Henderson, or Hendo as he is known, is a doyen of the Australian craft beer scene. He has been brewing for over 10 years and has experienced it all in those times. He founded of Brewcult, was AIBA Champion Gypsy Brewer, won the GABS Peoples Choice Champion Beer and has brewed with Brewcult, Prickly Moses, Southern Bay and Stone and Wood. He has now started a new business, The Rockstar Brewer Academy, and is looking to share his experiences and help new and established brewers brew better beer.Steve and I got together one night, after I accidentally stood him up to watch the Bachelor finale with my wife and daughter. The good sport that he is, he forgave me and we had an amazing chat. We covered so much ground in 60 minutes (slightly over my usual limit), including:Tips for starting a brewery;Risks of being a gypsy brewer; The importance of High Value/High Quality beers for surviving the game;Hard decisions and the checkpoints for saving beers;Social Media is not a Sales & Marketing plan;Dangers of ignoring the "Craft" in Craft Beer;Japanese Beer Festivals where all the beer is free;If he has plans to brew again; andOf course, the in's and out's of the Rockstar Brewer Academy.Enjoy!!!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

Operation Brewery is back! If you missed last season, we focused on how we were going about building our brewery. It's been 7 months since then and things are a bit different. This season, Road to the AIBA's will document our journey to improve the beer we make and work towards the big night for beer in Australia, the AIBA's in May. On episode 1 we catch up with good mate and beer legend Steve (Hendo) Henderson about what we have planned.
