In early January 1985, a 20-year-old National Guardsman is on a training exercise in Henderson, Nevada. The ambitious and intelligent young man has a strong moral compass guiding him in his career. That is, until one day, when he's confronted with a difficult choice and thrust into a situation out of his control. The cascade of choices he makes next change the course of his life in an entirely unanticipated way, altering his path forever. In episode 395, Jac and Alexis detail the intriguing story of Jerry Mathes, and how his journey through the criminal justice system and out the other side of incarceration forced him to mourn the kind of man he not only had been, but deep down face who he really wanted to be. This is a tale of the spiritually redemptive power of memoir and using one's voice to reclaim both the truth and a new perspective on life-changing events.

This week on Shat the Movies, we're asking the important question: what if Bigfoot was just… a really hairy houseguest? Harry and the Hendersons (1987) brings us a giant, gentle creature, a suburban family, and way more emotional damage than anyone signed up for. Gene and Big D break down the mix of slapstick, heart, and surprisingly heavy moments that somehow made this a childhood staple. Is Harry adorable or just a walking mess? And why does this movie hit harder as an adult than it ever did as a kid? Tune in to find out if this furry classic still holds up. Movie Summary: Harry and the Hendersons (1987) is a family comedy directed by William Dear and stars John Lithgow, Melinda Dillon, and Kevin Peter Hall as Harry. The film follows the Henderson family after they accidentally hit a Bigfoot-like creature with their car and bring him home, only to discover he's intelligent, emotional, and completely out of place in the human world. Known for its groundbreaking makeup effects by Rick Baker, the film won the Academy Award for Best Makeup. It blends comedy and heartfelt themes about acceptance, family, and letting go. This conversation is for the woman who has ever felt overlooked, abandoned, or stuck in cycles she did not know how to break. It is for the single mother trying to survive, the woman carrying shame from her past, and the person who needs to be reminded that God still restores, heals, and makes beauty out of broken places. Some stories are hard to tell, but they are necessary to tell because healing often begins when truth is finally brought into the light. In this episode of Between Me and You, I sit down with Nakisha Henderson for a deeply honest conversation about trauma, abandonment, toxic love, survival, healing, and the kind of restoration only God can bring. She opens up about how childhood abandonment shaped the way she saw herself, how it created a deep desire to be chosen, and how that wounded place followed her into a painful and unhealthy marriage. This episode is not just about what she survived. It is about what she learned, what God healed, and how she found her way back to wholeness. We talk about the effects of domestic violence, emotional trauma, the reality that hurt people really do hurt people, and the weight of trying to hold a family together when everything around you is breaking. Lakeisha also shares how those experiences shaped the way she thinks about her daughters, the lessons she hopes they carry, and why it is so important for women to heal so that pain does not continue passing from one generation to the next.If this conversation speaks to you, click the link in the description to join our community. In this episode of Backstage Bay Area, host Steve Roby interviews Dr. Eddie Henderson — a trumpet master, bandleader, and one of the few remaining links to Miles Davis's world. Born in San Francisco, Henderson's musical career started at 17 when Miles Davis stayed at his parents' house (his stepfather was Miles' doctor), introduced him to the legendary quintet, and ignited a lifelong love for jazz.Henderson shares remarkable personal stories: witnessing the Kind of Blue repertoire live with Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Philly Joe Jones; receiving direct advice from Miles to "get your own sound"; and the unforgettable moment he silenced Miles by dropping the name Freddie Webster. He also opens up about his time with Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band, his years playing alongside Art Blakey, and his current role as a trumpet instructor at Oberlin Conservatory. The conversation looks ahead to Eddie's upcoming performance at SF Jazz's Miles Davis Centennial Tribute at Miner Auditorium in San Francisco on March 21, where he'll lead a group performing the complete ‘Kind of Blue' album alongside drummer Lenny White and saxophonist Javon Jackson — both of whom have their own deep connections to Miles.Topics covered:Meeting Miles Davis at age 17 and seeing the first live performance of the Kind of Blue repertoireWhy Miles' music has endured — from modal jazz to Bitches Brew to hip hopMiles' philosophy: playing music vs. playing the instrumentThe famous "Freddie Webster" exchange and what it taught Henderson about finding your own voiceMiles as housemate, mentor, and comedianPerforming alongside Lenny White (Bitches Brew) and Javon Jackson at the SF Jazz tributeTeaching jazz at Oberlin and passing down the wisdom of MilesLinks & Info:SF Jazz Miles Davis Tribute — Saturday, March 21st, Miner Auditorium, San FranciscoTickets: sfjazz.org (shows nearly sold out at time of recording)Backstage Bay Area is your inside look at the Bay Area jazz scene. Edwin B. Henderson II is the author of the book, The Grandfather of Black Basketball: The Life and Times of Dr. E. B. Henderson. Henderson is the grandson and namesake of Dr. E. B. Henderson who organized the first athletic league for Blacks, introduced basketball to Black people on a wide-scale, organized basis, and founded associations to train and organize Black officials and referees. He also wrote and co-edited the first Spalding publication that highlighted the exploits of African American participation in sports and authored The Negro in Sports. Outside of athletics, Henderson was instrumental in founding the first rural branch of the NAACP, advocated for school desegregation, and held executive board positions with multiple NAACP branches.Overlooked for decades, Henderson and his wife, Nikki, began nominating Dr. E. B. Henderson to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, and after eight years, EB was finally enshrined in 2013as a contributor. The Grandfather of Black Basketball gives long-overdue recognition to a sports pioneer, civil rights activist, author, educator, and pragmatic humanitarian who fought his entire life to improve opportunities for youth through athletics. On this episode Mike & Ed discuss the extraordinary contributions of Dr. E.B. Henderson, a pioneering figure in the realm of basketball and a dedicated civil rights activist. We delve into the historical significance of his establishment of the first sanctioned athletic league for African Americans, which enabled equitable access to sports when existing white leagues refused participation. Through the lens of his grandson, Edwin B. Henderson II, we explore the impact of Dr. Henderson's initiatives, including the formation of the Eastern Board of Officials, which facilitated organized sports within the African American community. The discussion further highlights the long-overdue recognition of Dr. Henderson's legacy, culminating in his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, an accolade that underscores his pivotal role in shaping the sport. In this episode, Dr. Steve Judson and Dr. Drew Henderson get raw about the roadblocks that show up in life — on the highway, on the runway, in the office, and deep in the heart. Roadblocks aren't a sign you're on the wrong path. They're proof you're moving. The construction tearing up the road in front of Dr. Steve's office. Seven hours grounded on a plane. A closed highway turning into a live lesson on Atlas subluxation. A tough construction worker who came in for his wife — and ended up dreaming about his mother again. Life will block the road. The question is whether you go around it, or climb over the wall. Dr. Steve shares one of the most personal stories he's ever told — losing Lily, walking back into the office that Monday, and adjusting people while quietly falling apart. Because that's what servants do. They lose themselves in service. And somewhere on the other side of the chaos, the purpose becomes clear. Two biggest roadblocks you'll ever face? Your mindset and your Atlas. Clear both — and watch what happens. It's time to Wake Up Humans — keep walking forward, stay on the principle, and trust that the roadblock in front of you is preparing you for a responsibility you can't see yet. How's your Atlas? Lawyers Representing Epstein Survivors Go Scorched Earth On The DOJ In A Letter To The Court

The lawyers representing survivors — including a firm called Edwards & Henderson — submitted a scathing filing to a federal judge after a recent release of documents tied to the Epstein estate revealed dozens of unredacted names of alleged victims, even including some who were minors at the time of abuse. The disclosure, made public via a release authorized by the House Oversight Committee, triggered “widespread panic” among survivors, who said the government had promised to shield their identities but instead exposed them. One survivor reportedly stated she had “been unable to mentally and emotionally function or sleep.”In their letter the lawyers argued that the unredacted names couldn't merely be a mistake — either the DOJ “does not know” all the identities of the victims and therefore cannot reliably redact them, or it “is intentionally failing to protect victims from public exposure.” They asked the court to require the DOJ to overhaul its review and redaction process, to ensure no further releases of sensitive documents occur before proper redactions are in place. Without that, they warned, survivors would remain at risk of further trauma, public shaming, and emotional distress.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Timothy Henry and Raj Sisodia interview Harvard professor and author Rebecca Henderson about her book Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire and why purpose-driven, multi-stakeholder firms can outperform yet remain hard to implement because they require deep investments in strategy, structure, and human systems. To see the full video podcast, check out the Conscious Capitalists YouTube channel hereHenderson connects climate change, inequality, and democratic erosion to shareholder primacy, arguing for stronger democratic institutions, reducing money in politics, and grassroots rebuilding of trust. She emphasizes leaders' inner work, “kindness and math,” and the ability to disagree respectfully as foundations for high-trust, innovative organizations—especially important in an AI era. Henderson recounts her shift from engineering to organizational change and climate work, lessons from board service, and her teaching evolution from “Reimagining Capitalism” to “Reweaving Ourselves,” including the role of retreats in sustaining courageous leadership. If you enjoy this podcast, would you consider leaving a review on Apple Podcasts. In this episode, Dr. Steve Judson and Dr. Drew Henderson talk about what it really means to show up — in your practice, in your profession, and in your life. Not for the photo op. Not for the postcard promising an extra $30,000 a month. But out of genuine obedience to the principle, love for the people on your table, and a commitment to something bigger than yourself. The doors that open in this profession don't open because you chased them. They open because you kept showing up, stayed humble, built real relationships, and let your work speak. From DE hallways to Mar-a-Lago — it's the same story. Obedience puts you in the room. Dr. Steve and Dr. Drew also remind every chiropractor listening: you cannot fake lasting purpose. Sell your patients on their own ability to heal — and nothing else. It's time to Wake Up Humans — to get quiet, get connected, and let that innate intelligence guide you. In the office and out of it. Become the hollow bone. How's your Atlas? Learn more at drstevejudson.com and check out Steve Judson's books and gear.

Members of the local congressional delegation are strongly criticizing President Trump's decision to enter into a war with Iran. Iraqi war veteran and U.S. Rep. Eugene Vindman joined the show from the U.S. Capitol to discuss why he thinks the military strikes were illegal and what might be next. Plus, Rep. Vindman weighed in on Virginia redistricting as early voting gets underway. The D.C. Council passed two bills this week aimed at increasing transparency around MPD's cooperation with federal immigration agencies. At-Large Councilmember Christina Henderson got behind the mic to talk about the legislation and why the bills are necessary, despite objections from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. She also discussed her efforts to raise taxes on "flushable" wipes. Henderson introduced the bill following an incident in which wipes clogged pumps used to mitigate a sewage spill in the Potomac. It may say flushable on your package, and, sure, it may get down the drain in that immediate, but we know that it is causing backups, not just in the D.C water utility system, but in folks' homes and apartment buildings," she said. The tax revenue generated by the bill would go toward sewer maintenance and repair by D.C. Water. As a potential alternative to the wipes, Henderson's bill also offers a sales tax break on bidetsArlington County is facing major budget challenges that could lead the County Board to raise taxes. Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti sat down with Kojo and Tom to discuss how the board plans to navigate a nearly $40 million budget gap, including possibly eliminating a popular youth gymnastics program and saving the county nearly $1 million. But some residents are pushing back, saying the program serves thousands of kids. Board Chair de Ferranti said the county needs to make tough budget choices."We have to be looking at all the services that might not be core services or might not be serving the most vulnerable," he said.De Ferranti said the board is considering other options for the program, like changing fees and focusing on serving kids with special needs. Plus, Board Chair de Ferranti talked about how leaders are preparing for a potential surge in federal immigration enforcement in the county.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org
