In this episode we talk about other treatments for depression. Depression doesn't take away your drive. It just leaves you stuck in park. Idling. Therapy and medications are the primary treatments for depression. This leaves out many other treatments and doesn't address habits we often have that can massively dilute the efficacy of any amount of therapy and meds. We're going to give you about 13. Depression, apathy, and just feeling blue and numb, are very real issues affecting all of us. We are all on the spectrum, we're all coping to a level, and even when we are greatly inspired in one area of our life we can be dealing with aspects of depression in others. No treatments are guarantees, but all are highly relevant in combating these issues. We get through six of them in this episode and continue on in the next episode to cover the rest. A quick note of relevance I feel we should have started off with, is...motive. Until you have a clear motive to pull out of depression, few of any treatments will matter. In this episode I'm going to enlighten you to another cultural illness we have. It's explaining our decisions and actions to get other's affirmations and validations. We want everyone's approval and we spend copious amounts of time explaining ourselves and encountering anxiety about having our friend's, family's and the world's blessings about everything we decide to do. And you may often be asked by others why we did something or are doing something or even why we like or dislike something. And we follow with, “Because…” and our explanation. We seek to justify all we do to others. In the last episode I discussed the toxic nature of doing things we feel we “should” do. I'm putting “because” in the same category. Now this isn't a rebellious message to give everyone the finger and do as you darn well please and not seek wisdom and counsel. But the fact you are here and listening says you seek wisdom and counsel. You have to be accountable to yourself for what you decide to do and the actions you take in life, and trust you are seeking counsel and wisdom. In this short episode I want to uncover the insidious role of expectations and shoulds that often make up much of our personal and cultural drive. And, it shouldn't. Whatever you are driving after that is fueled by a should will bear bad fruit. One of three things will happen. One, you'll achieve the objective, but with bitterness and exhaustion. Call it collateral damage. This is what leads to burnout. Two, you'll achieve the objective but find no fulfillment and you'll just wonder what's next. Or three, you won't ever achieve the objective because your heart is not really in it, and you'll feel guilt and frustration because you know you're capable. But right now, even as I say this, you're likely to feel trapped, as you have built your life now, around a lot of should's and expectations. I understand. I've done it too. In this episode we give focus to our drive, in our work. Our work is a primary, if not the primary focus of our lives, at least from a daily time and energy devotion. The message here is in relation to the interviewing process, but as you'll hear, so much of it relates to our lives overall. In any relationship and opportunity there is an aspect of selling yourself and often a struggle between being yourself and feeling you are performing. I was recently introduced to Anna Papalia who is one of our leading authorities on the new science of interviewing. Now, I've been a lifetime entrepreneur who has never technically interviewed for a traditional job, but as I read Anna's research I was made acutely aware that as an entrepreneur I spend a lot of my time interviewing for opportunities. Selling myself. And to that degree, we all are. Which is why I wanted to bring this conversation to you. Anna's research is now culminated in her new book, “Interviewology” where it categorizes all of us in four interview styles - The Charmer, the Challenger, the Examiner, and the Harmonizer. The three keys we discuss are, 1) understand your own style, 2) understand how to fully embrace your style in interviews and be completely authentic when you're selling yourself, and 3) understand the other styles so you can tap into them when you are being interviewed, or you are interviewing, so you can better connect with the other person and vastly increase your chances of success. In this episode look at our physical wellness, as our bodies are the vehicle that houses everything we drive toward. Few things drive our appetites like…sugar. We see sugar as a gift and honor it like we honor wine. And like wine, it's probably not best to have it in excess. For the greater span of time, humans went most of their lives with little to no sugar outside of the occasional fruit when it was in season. In America it wasn't until around 1619 when sugarcane came on the scene. Today sugar is added to everything. The American Heart Association recommends up to 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons per day. Though the average American consumes 88 grams, about 22 teaspoons a day. What's best for our physical health? Today, 1 in every 3 Americans has diabetes or prediabetes. Another way to look at it, around 122 million Americans have a sugar related disorder, while only 14 million have an alcohol disorder. We are sicker and bigger than ever and sugar is the primary culprit. In this episode I address our drive to improve. If you didn't have that drive, you wouldn't be listening now. You want to improve. Better yourself. And the point is getting better results from your life and more joy and fulfillment in your soul. Yet we can fall into the trap of striving and striving and never being ok with ourselves right now. As we humans tend to do, we polarize and are prone to constantly, exhaustively pushing to improve and often just being disappointed in ourselves and frustrated with our slow progress, or we just throw our hands in the air and ask if we can just be ok as we are! Is there a happy medium? A place of growth and peace? A quest for improvement and contentment? Of course I'm going to make a case there is, but it's a perspective I must keep revisiting myself as I'm prone to the extremes as well. Let's talk about the delicate balance. I've forever had my paradigm shifted with a new category of attributes. What are attributes? They are inherent qualities you possess. We all do. And they inform everything we do. Here is the story. Rich Diviney spent 20 years as a Navy SEAL, completing more than a dozen overseas deployments, eleven in Iraq and Afghanistan. He went on to be intimately involved in a specialized SEAL selection process to look for elite performers amongst the already elite SEAL members. As your body is the physical vehicle for all you do here on earth, this episode is about having it in great working order. As we continue to look at the best foods to fuel our bodies, we now turn to fat. Most of grew up where fat was the enemy, so everything went to no fat or zero fat and we Americans got…fatter. As quoted by the NCBI, National Center for Biotechnology Information: The prevalence of obesity changed relatively little during the 1960s and 1970s, but it increased sharply over the ensuing decades—from 13.4% in 1980 to 34.3% in 2008 among adults and from 5% to 17% among children during the same period. Then...the national adult obesity rate has increased by 26 percent since 2008 and today the U.S. adult obesity rate stands at 42.4 percent, the first time the national rate has passed the 40 percent mark. No fat has made us fat. Now let me clarify; a pint of Ben & Jerry's is 16 oz, and if I have it, I eat it all. The whole pint. A pint of Chubby Hubby has 1,320 calories and 80g of fat. I've continued to be skeptical of the whole “manifesting” concept, until now. As I've finally shown and convinced that I have been and always am manifesting most of my life. I don't believe I'm all powerful or that I am God. But I do find that I generally reap what I sow. What my mind dwells on seems to come to pass, and my mind…our minds…naturally tend toward negative thoughts. If I keep thinking I don't want to get sick, I don't want to get sick, my subconscious just comprehends a constant focus on sickness. And goes to work towards it. What I need to do is focus on being well. Being well. Being well. And let my subconscious work on that. Let it bolster my immune system and let it steer me toward feeling positive and optimistic and increasing my awareness of making better health choices and avoiding things that weaken me. To expound on this topic from a scientific perspective, I bring you James R. Doty. James is a brain surgeon. His playground is the brain. And he has studied the concept of manifesting from a neurological standpoint and leaves the woo-woo out of the conversation. Dr Doty has been on the faculty of the Stanford University School of Medicine since 1997 in the Neurosurgery Department as a professor and more recently as an adjunct professor. He is also the founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford, of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor. James' new book is Mind Magic: The Neuroscience of Manifestation And How It Changes Everything. I admittedly brought up faith and God and I feel they can and do coexist. But James bring us to consider neurological issues like “value tagging” and our “selective attention system” and a concept I feel is really tangible called “target fixation” which often gets brought up in regards to motorcycle accidents, where when a rider becomes so fixated on an unwanted target ahead that causes them to unconsciously steer into the direction of their gaze.
