From their tiny outpost in the ski town of Park City, Offset Bier (https://offsetbier.com) has turned Utah's challenges—such as a ban on serving draft beer higher than 5 percent ABV—into opportunities. Last year was a breakout one for the budding brewery—we named their session IPA Dopo one of our Best 20 Beers in 2024 (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-20-beers-in-2024), while another session IPA, Divi, won gold medal at Great American Beer Festival. Necessity is truly the mother of invention, and the constraints placed upon founder Conor Brown force creative problem solving, as he pulls from various corners of the brewing playbook—European lager and hefeweizen, British ale, and more—for processes and creative angles that drive flavorful, aroma-led hazy LIPAs, or “Lie-PAs.” In this episode, Brown covers: mash steps to promote foam-positive proteins and body in hazy IPAs made from 100 percent barley malt dialing in water chemistry with calcium targets, sodium, and sulfate more than chloride using chit malt in lieu of oats or wheat, and selecting low-FAN pilsner malt embracing small amounts of crystal malts managing DMS reduction at altitude the benefit of boiling hops with longer additions creating texture through hop choices such as American Nobles developing exacting pH targets at each stage of the brewing process And more. In the mid-2010s, J Jackson-Beckham, PhD was an academic with a homebrewing habit, blogging incisively about what she called “the unbearable whiteness of brewing.” Her deep expertise and singular voice eventually caught the eye of the Brewers Association, which tapped her to serve as the trade group's first-ever “Diversity Ambassador” in 2018. Today, "Dr. J" joins Taplines to reflect on that moment — not only a pivotal one in her own career but also in the trajectory of the craft beer industry writ large as brewers big and small began trying to square their professed values with their business practices (and ideally, bring more paying customers to their taprooms, too.) That work is ongoing: shortly after we recorded this episode in late 2023, she joined the BA full-time as its director of social impact. Don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Hosted on Acast. In our first-ever N/ATION road trip, we headed to the mountain mecca of craft beer in the east, Asheville, North Carolina. In this two-part episode we first chatted with Jason Pedrick, owner of NoLo, Asheville's non-alcoholic bottle shop that was the first of its kind to open in the Southeast in 2021. In our conversation Jason gave us his perspective on the N/A movement in the city, where bottle shops like his may fit into future growth in the category, and what participation he'd love to see from the craft beer community locally. In the second-part of our episode we sat down with Doug Reiser, COO and Co-Founder of Burial Beer, Asheville's first (and currently only) local brewery to produce an N/A beer. Doug explained why Burial felt it was a priority to get into N/A, what it's done for both their customers and employees, and his thoughts on the role Asheville might play in the movement going forward.

In today's episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the CEO of Inbox Beverage Company, Mr. Max Fann. We delved into the exciting world of container breweries, wineries, distilleries, and cideries. Max shared his vision and success stories of transforming shipping containers into functional and stylish beverage establishments. They have already deployed some of these containers, including a 20-foot cold box for a brewery in Charlotte and a dog-friendly bar in South Asheville. Max surprised me with a taste of their imported tequila, which was smooth, subtly smoky, and had a delightful fruit-forward flavor. We discussed Inbox's expansion into bulk spirits sales and their commitment to providing ongoing support and training to their customers. It was an enlightening conversation that showcased the innovative solutions Inbox offers to the craft beverage industry. "What makes Inbox pretty unique is we can provide the unit. This turnkey facility, our model is half the time, half the cost, because you're not building a facility." Today on Consuming the Craft:Inbox Beverage Company is a company that specializes in converting shipping containers into breweries, wineries, distilleries, and cideries. They have already built and delivered operational bar containers to various locations. The next container they are working on is a 20-foot cold box for a brewery in Charlotte to address their cold storage needs. They also have plans to build an outdoor bar attached to the cold box in the future.Inbox Beverage Company is also involved in creating a dog-friendly bar in South Asheville, which will include a 20-foot cold box and a restroom container. They offer a variety of container options for different purposes, such as restrooms, bar space, and cold storage.Inbox Beverage Company has expanded its services to include importing spirits from Mexico, specifically tequila and mezcal. They have partnerships with six different producers in Mexico and plan to release their own tequila and mezcal brands in the future. Happy New Year, and welcome back to another bone-chilling episode of Beer Before Fear! To kick off 2024, we're digging into the what many believe (including Erik)is one of the greatest horror movies of all time, "The Shining" from 1980, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. And, this time around, Erik has paired another fantastic beer to go with it, this time from Foam Brewers u[ in Burlington, VT. After the holiday season, isolation and seasonal depression seems to be pretty common for a lot of people, and so we thought this might be the perfect time to discuss a movie that's all about isolation and seasonal depression, complete with a Double IPA to catch a serious buzz. So raise your glasses with us as we dissect and discuss one of the greatest films of all time. Cheers!Follow us on Instagram, and say hi!

Returning to Taplines today for the second installment of our two-part episode about Blue Moon's historic, controversial rise is Keith Villa, the former Coors brewer who created the iconic, top-selling Belgian-style witbier in the mid-'90s. We discuss the brand's soaring success after its rocky first few years in the Rocky Mountains — and how once Blue Moon found its footing in Coors' portfolio, it started to face criticism from some members of the craft brewing industry, who painted the beer as an interloper to “the movement” that Villa had considered himself a part of. The year: 2008. The magazine: The New Yorker. The story: “A Better Brew: The Rise of Extreme Beer.” Was it the most important magazine piece ever written about craft brewing? Those who know of what they speak, like Tom Acitelli, author of 2013's The Audacity of Hops, certainly thought so. Today we're joined by the author of that seminal New Yorker feature, Burkhard Bilger, to discuss the the idea, the execution, and the legacy of “A Better Brew.” This one is for the media heads, the history heads, and the Bilger heads, too. In this episode Bob and I get ready for Oktoberfest season by covering Festbier. Oktoberfestbier or Festbier is a German-style of low fermentation beer that is very similar to lagers in its blonde color but also in the fact that it is fermented at a cooler temperature than ales. We could also define it as a German blonde lager relatively soft and limpid in the mouth. Examples of this style: 1. Fat Heads Oktoberfest 2. Wolf's Ridge - Oktoberfest 3. Great Lakes Brewing Company – Oktoberfest Beer Representation: Festbier - Columbus Brewing 5.3% ABV N/A IBUs Beer Description: Oktoberfest style lager Let's first talk about the characteristics of this style of beer: ABV: 5.8-6.3% IBUs: 18-25 Color: 4-6 Serving Temp: 45-50 Serving Pressure: 10-12 PSI Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. This week I was out west again in Toledo, Ohio. I got to spend some time with Alex and Ali Drosdowicz who are co-owners of Quenched and Tempered Brewing Company. Alex is the head brewer at Quenched and Tempered and Ali runs the marketing for the brewery as well as handling all the can art. They began brewing in 2019 in Grand Rapids, Ohio which is approximately 20 miles from Toledo. The tap room did not open until August of 2022, but Quenched and Tempered had already earned quite a following over the previous 3 years. Q&T has events almost every day that they are open. They recently celebrated becoming part of the ORA in Toledo, and on 8/11 they will begin the weekend celebration of their taproom's 1 year anniversary. Beer Selection: · Rose the Riveter – Strawberry Rhubarb Rose Ale 6.5% · Winged Hussar – Imperial Vienna Lager 7.5% · Dunkel Dezzy – Munich Dunkel 8% · The Orange Alternative – Milk Stout 4.5% You can find Quenched and Tempered Brewing Company on the web at https://www.quenchedandtempered.com/ and you can also see them on FB and IG @quenchedandtempered. In this episode Bob and I continue to drink hoppy beers. This week we throttle the IBUs back a bit and take on the American Pale. Like many others that have become known as classic American beers, the American pale ale can trace its roots to beer styles from abroad. The American pale ale beer was inspired by the English pale ale, replacing its English counterpart's earthy, herbal hops with generous additions of boldly citrus and pine-like American varieties. As one of the most popular American beer styles, pale ale beer is not hard to track down, but the various takes on this iconic style by just as many American craft brewers makes it impossible to jam everything there is to know about American pale ale beer on one page, but we'll do our best. ABV: 4.5-6.2% IBUs: 30-50 Color: 5-10 Serving Temp: 45-50F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Sierra Nevada – Pale Ale 5.6% ABV 38 IBUs Beer Description: Our most popular beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a delightful interpretation of a classic style. It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor. Second representation: The Dancing Gnome – Lustra 5.8% ABV 45 IBU Beer Description: An ode to the unity of malted barley, hops, yeast, water, and the brewer who prudently blends them. Intense tropical and citrus fruit aromas and a clean fruity bitterness work in harmony with the lightly toasted wheat bread flavors derived from the malt. In 2012, New York State had just 95 breweries — dramatically fewer than its fourth-in-the-nation population suggested it should. Five years later, that number had doubled, and the Empire State was well on its way to becoming the craft-beverage hotbed it is today. What happened? Today on Taplines, we've got Chris O'Leary, founder and editor of the venerable Brew York blog and a longtime observer of the state's political brewing landscape, joining for an episode about a certain, since-disgraced governor's successful gambit to boost artisanal booze production with an assist from Albany. This week I celebrate my 100th episode with a visit to Cambridge, Ohio. This week's brewery visit was at Guernsey Brewhouse, and I got to sit down with Shawn Long who is the co-owner of Guernsey Brewhouse along with his wife Amy. We were also joined by Shawn's co-brewer Tony Wray. We talked about the history of Cambridge and its lack of brewing history. We discussed the challenge of being a rural brewery and the challenges of being discovered by brewery explorers. This led to Shawn making a very solid point that your regulars are the ones that sustains business due their reliability, which makes it very important to brew great beer that they want to drink. I can tell you that there is no shortage of great beer at Guernsey Brewhouse. We enjoyed a lager, shandy, hazy IPA, and Imperial stout. Beer Selection: · Guernsey Lager – 4.5% · Spaceman IPA w/ Cryo Hops –7.25% · Lemon Shandy –4% · S-Bridge Stout – 9% You can find Guernsey Brewhouse on the web at http://www.guernseybrewhouse.com/ and you can also see them on FB and IG at @guernseybrewhouse. In this episode Bob and I stay home in the U.S. and follow the Blonde Ale with the Cream Ale. The American cream ale is a mild, pale, light-bodied ale, made using a warm fermentation (top or bottom fermenting yeast) and cold lagering. Despite being called an ale, when being judged in competitions it is acceptable for brewers to use lager yeast. Style examples: 1. Wolf's Ridge Day Break 2. Uniontown Brewing – Jail Hill Cream Ale 3. Paradigm Shift Brewing Company – Island Juice ABV: 4.2-5.6% IBUs: 8-20 Color: 2-5 Serving Temp: 40-45F Serving Pressure: 10-12 PSI Beer Representation: Wrecking Crew Brew Works – Copper Penny Cream Ale ABV: 5.6% IBUs: 13 Beer Description: This straw colored cream ale is made with the choicest ingredients and aged for like a day. This beer is dedicated to an old watering hole in Seven Hills, OH where the beer was cheap and Genesee beer flowed like water. In this episode Bob and I come back home for another crushable summer beer style. This week we drink and talk about the American Blonde Ale. One of the most approachable styles, a golden or blonde ale is an easy-drinking beer that is visually appealing and has no particularly dominating malt or hop characteristics. Rounded and smooth, it is an American classic known for its simplicity. Sometimes referred to as “golden ale.” These beers can have honey, spices and fruit added, and may be fermented with lager or ale yeast. Style examples: 1. Wadsworth Brewing Company – Thelma Lou 2. The Phoenix Brewing Company – Persephone 3. Ignite Brewing Company – Matchstick Blonde ABV: 3.8-5.5% IBUs: 15-28 Color: 3-6 Serving Temp: 40-45F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Twin Oast Brewing Company – Old Ohio 4.7% ABV 20 IBUs Beer Description: Sometimes you just want an easy-drinking, light-bodied beer -- Old Ohio is just that. Brewed to be balanced, this American Blonde Ale finishes with subtle citrus tones, and is the perfect beer to reach for after a long day on the farm.
