Terms like “legend”, “iconic” and “trailblazer” get bandied around a lot, probably rather more than they should. Yet we doubt there would be anyone in the Australian beer industry who would quibble if we applied any – or all – of them to Jade Flavell and The Wheaty, the Thebarton pub she's been running for more than two decades. We sat down with Jade to reflect on her time in hospitality, and her passion for good beer (and whisky), “thinking drinking”, and celebrating independence. That we joined her in the band room at the rear of the pub was highly appropriate too: the discussion of independence covered more than beer and hospo and took in the huge challenges facing independent music venues in the face of their own version of the multinational brewing and booze retail behemoths. The conversation stretches back to Jade's early days in Adelaide pubs, alongside the two mates with whom she'd take over Wheatsheaf Hotel – Trotty and Liz, and examines how drinking culture has come a fair way in the decades since yet still has distance left to run. Jade takes us through the transition from rundown, rotting pub to groundbreaking beer venue then award-winning brewpub, and to becoming The Wheaty's “benevolent dictator” following Trotty's passing and Liz's decision to leave the business. And she tells us about her intention, as guardian of the pub, to find a way to ensure it remains a home for great drinks and live music when the time comes to pass the baton.Prior to the chat with Jade, and rather contrary to those discussions of independence, we kick off the show talking about the recent departure from Balter of Scotty Hargrave, head brewer and a founding member, five years after the sale to CUB, as well as the new brewery for students at Bendigo TAFE.This week also sees us announce the first winners in our “Have You Done A Rallings?” campaign to highlight good beer citizens across Australia, and launch another campaign celebrating the country's brewers. From health problems to challenging interpersonal relationships, we all experience crises of varying degrees throughout our lives. While a common pitfall is to adopt a “victim” mentality, a more empowering approach is to search for the lessons amidst these crises and use them to ignite our growth and evolution. From the time she was a young child, Lynn Balter has navigated an array of personal crises, including family trauma, sexual assault, breast cancer, addiction, divorce, and more. However, she developed the mindset that these challenges were perfectly intended for her growth – a growth that would continue to align her personality to her soul, or what she calls her “true self.” After earning her business administration degree from Western Michigan University, Lynn moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, where she began her career as a property manager and real estate broker before becoming a highly successful entrepreneur in the vacation rental industry. Following her son's autism diagnosis, Lynn has helped raise millions of dollars for Autism Speaks and the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center. She is also the author of the book, “Walking Through Pain to Purpose.” In Episode 192 of The MINDset Game® podcast, Lynn shares more of her inspiring story, as well as the following insights: Why it's important to examine the patterns, beliefs, and behaviors that have repeatedly surfaced throughout your life – particularly in response to difficult circumstances – and strive to shift those that may no longer be serving you The power of going inward when faced with challenges and trying to identify the lessons they may be trying to teach you, as well as the parts of yourself that may need healing How using the lessons you've learned from your challenges as a way to help others who may be facing similar situations can help fuel further transformation and joy in your life To learn more about Lynn and her book, visit https://lynnbalter.com. Balter is a verb that means to dance or move clumsily. Our word of the day comes from Old English and has been around since the 16th century. Here's an example of balter in use: Watching my dad balter around the living room when he hears his favorite song can be embarrassing. But let's be honest, I've been known to dance around like a dork myself on occasion.
Most investor pitch meetings don't end in murder - but then Marty and Bo haven't had a lot of luck lately. They've been struggling to keep their startup business alive. It's not high-tech, it's not highly successful and the pressure to find capital has strained their bank accounts and Marty's marriage. So when Nico Scava offered to invest they eagerly accepted. He had money, connections in the art world, and a creative idea, but maybe they should have asked more questions. Now Nico's dead and they're on the hook for whatever scheme he was running. The Russian mob is after them, and if they don't find $10 million and a mysterious missing painting in the next few days they'll be dead too.Their frantic chase will lead them from a cabin in the Oregon woods to a Portland strip club, from an aging artist to a bogus baron, and deep into the history of a missing masterpiece that someone is willing to kill to obtain. As the bodies pile up, Marty and Bo will have some tough choices to make about how far they'll go to protect their families, their company, and themselves.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. BORN and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, Lynn Balter began learning the lessons that would bring her closer to her true self, a journey of self-discovery, at a very young age. After attending Western Michigan University and earning her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1982, she moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, where shebegan her career as a property manager, then a real estate agent/broker, and a successful entrepreneur in the vacation rental industry. The years passed, the lessons continued, every time bringing her closer to healing the wounds necessary to further her growth. She marriedNeil Balter, her soulmate and a self-made entrepreneur in 2001. One year later, they became the parents of twins, one of whom has autism.Lynn's journey to discover her true self is a story of surviving childhood trauma, sexual assault, breast cancer, addiction, divorce, a diagnosis of autism, a crisis of traumatic brain injury, co-dependency, gaslighting, a “cancierge” (caregiver of late-stage Multiple Myeloma), business and bankruptcy, and near fatal accidents—all perfectly intended for her growth, the growth that would continue to align her personality to her soul (her true self). With each lesson learned, Lynn also found peace and enlightenment through her love of spiritual teachings. Service and philanthropy have been key in healing the wounds necessary in herquest to become whole. In 1996, Lynn earned membership in the Young Entrepreneurs Organization (now EO), where she met her husband. She and Neil have helped raise millions of dollars for Autism Speaks and the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC), both internationally recognized nonprofits. Over her lifetime, Lynn has volunteered and served for numerous nonprofit organizations, including the Center Against Sexual Assault (CASA), Homebase Youth Services, SARRC, First Place AZ, Kids Who Care, Homes of Hope, National Charity League, and Epi Hab, an organization that creates jobs for special needs individualswith epilepsy and other special needs.More about Lynn-https://lynnbalter.com/More about Liz-Work- https://www.lizshealingtouch.com/Radio Show- https://www.voiceofvashon.org/raise-the-vibePodcast- https://www.buzzsprout.com/958816Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/raisethevibewithlizInstagram- https://www.instagram.com/raisethevibewithliz/*** Support the show! https://www.buzzsprout.com/958816/supportSupport me on Patreon- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=43081730https://paypal.me/LisbethPeterson?country.x=US&locale.x=en_USThank you!Support the show

Max talks with Laurence Balter about how the general aviation community in Hawaii is flying relief supplies to help victims of Maui's wildfires. The town of Lahaina is served by just a single road, which has closed frequently since the wildfires began a week ago. Electricity and cell phone outages have also hampered relief efforts. Soon after the fires, local Maui pilots began organizing to fly supplies into Kapalua Airport, near Lahaina, but which is closed to most general aviation flights. The pilots received permission to fly into Kapalua, and began flying relief supplies to the airport. Balter and Maui Brewing founder Garrett Marrero organized the effort via text messages and social media, and flights began on August 11. The pilot group worked with the airport fire departments at Maui's main Kahului Airport. Firefighters and volunteers weighed and loaded supplies that were delivered to the fire station. The process worked in reverse at theKapalua airport, where local fire fighters unloaded planes and helicopters and arranged for the distribution of supplies to local victims in Lahaina. Laurence is flying his relief flights using the Cirrus SR22 that he usually uses for dual-led flying experiences, for pilots vacationing on Maui who are interested in flying a Cirrus and getting exposed to flying in Hawaii. We're kicking off the festival season with bang on this month's show with a killer combination of guests; Mowgli and Oh My Rosh, ahead of my b2b with them at Balter Festival this Sunday. Both DJs have fully established themselves as forces to be reckoned with over their years in the scene, and their mini mixes are packed with bangers from all corners of drum and bass, jungle to neuro to minimal, you name it, these boys have got it!
what's the meaning of Balter? How is it pronounced

On March 17th, at least 17 major news outlets published a story claiming a group of scientists had analyzed new genetic data from Chinese and that data linked raccoon dogs at the Huanan Seafood Market to the origin of COVID-19. At best, it was journalistic misfeasance, at worst it was willful misdirection. At the time “raccoon dog mediapalooza” dominated the news cycle, there was no data, no preprint, nor peer reviewed paper available for independent examination of the scientist's claims. “Raccoon dog mediapalooza” was based on “quotes” from “the usual suspects”; a cabal of virologists that have misstated, distorted, and/or overstated the evidence pointing to a natural spillover since the beginning of the pandemic. Today, I interview veteran journalist Mike Balter for the insider's perspective of the mainstream media coverage of the investigation of the origin of COVID-19 since the beginning. Their over-reliance on “the usual suspects” a small group of virologists with clear self interest in the outcome of an investigation into the origin of COVID-19. Mike has been a working journalist for more than four decades and wrote for Science Magazine for 25 of those years. It's a long interview but filled with many profound insights.

This week we have something a little different as we meet Bede Durbidge, one of the founders of Balter Brewing Company. Balter is sometimes - and I think unfairly - referred to as the surfers brewery, on account of the four very visible faces who were behind the business. While the profile of the surfers behind Balter undoubtedly helped garner some attention and stand out in an increasingly crowded market when it launched, the drinks industry is littered with brands that failed despite much more evident star power. Having heard Bede speak about his career and the origins of the brewery, I always wondered whether the people behind the brand, actually played a part in its success in ways more than just celebrity. That's what I explore in this episode. Today I have the honor and pleasure of interviewing Max Balter, a well-experienced film director who just moved to Los Angeles. We talk about the differences between the Ukrainian film industry and Hollywood, how to succeed in an industry as competitive as film, and the mindsets Max adopted in order to achieve his goals. He's also just such an incredibly nice and humble guy. Just wanted to say that here in this description because why not? It's my show. My Links! DM Me on Instagram! @thelouisluong Text Me! It's been almost exactly three years since Balter Brewing announced its sale to Carlton & United Breweries. What happens after a buyout like this is always a bit of an unknown. But by all accounts, Balter has been going gangbusters under the new regime.Stirling Howland and Scott Hargrave of Balter are with us this episode of Drinks Adventures. You're going to hear how CUB's ownership has introduced Balter's hop-forward beers to some unlikely venues, with surprising results. But we also explore some of the other contributors to its success. Like the ‘measure twice, cut once' philosophy that underpins its approach to packaged beer.I'll weigh in with some opinions of my own on that topic, too. And Scott tells us why the ‘haze craze' is not really a craze, but the latest evolution of the India Pale Ale style. And speaking of style evolutions, I get their thoughts on the Aussie Wheat Ale initiative, which we explored a few episodes ago on this podcast with the participating CUB craft breweries.First up, I asked Stirling whether we'd heard correctly in that episode, that Balter's Currumbin brewery is struggling to keep up with the popularity of its beers.
Bunnings has assembled an internal team of 700 people across five technology-oriented domains in less than four years, shifting from an almost completely outsourced operating model in the process. In this week's episode of the iTnews Podcast, the architect of that shift, Chief Information Officer Leah Balter, discusses the progression and maturation of the digital, technology, data, architecture and innovation functions at one of Australia's most iconic retailers.
Welcome to Knoxville, Tennessee, where the beer flows just as easy as the country music, the whiskey, and the rolling hills. Where Will Rutemeyer finally realized his true calling to become a brewer. Where Balter Beerworks found its roots in classic brews, handcrafted foods, and community gatherings. This is a Will's story as much as it is Balter's story. For without the other, neither would be quite the same. And Knoxville wouldn't be either.Meet Will Rutemeyer from Balter BeerworksGrowing up in Chattanooga, Will's parent's were friends with the owners of Chattanooga Brewing Co. So at a young age, Will was exposed to the art of brewing. Not quite sure yet what path he wanted to follow, off to college young Will went, graduating with degree in hand to land himself in a corporate job hidden amidst the cubicles. Quickly learning that this was not the path he wanted to follow, he began his journey back to brewing. Crossing paths with another that was also looking to get into the brewery business, a new path was forged. One built on well-balanced classic beers to match the lifestyle that so many struggle to create. So while we all may be a bit out of balance when it comes to that ever elusive work/life balance, visiting Balter Beerworks in Knoxville, Tennessee, may just be the weight needed to bring us back to center. At least for that moment that we are enjoying the beers that pair well with the food while gathering with friends.Join us as we chat all the above and attempt to give you, our listeners, a bit of unsolicited advice about how to create a work/life balance that fits your lifestyle. Because balance in life, just as in beer, is never an equal weight of all the ingredients.Join us as we chat all the above and attempt to give you, our listeners, a bit of unsolicited advice about how to create a work/life balance that fits your lifestyle. This episode is all about our adventures at the 8th Annual Eatons Hill Hotel Beer Fest on the Grass ... our first year as a feature!?! We had a blast hosting interviews, beer pong, giant jenga & trivia. We spoke with Davy from Copperhead Brewery, Steve & Craig from Blasta Brewing as well as Nova Radio's Luttsy & Rob Comiskey from The Comiskey Group. Throughout the day, we gave away awesome prizes, kindly donated by the absolute legends at Showcase Beers, Dude & Duke Beer Hall, Blasta, Balter, Aether, Fonzie Abbott, Straddie Brewing, Helios, Soapbox, All Inn & Blackflag. We can't all of you enough! The episode also features as couple of our trivia sessions as well. Hopefully, it's somewhat listenable. Anyway ... give it a spin!
This week, what happens when your brewery is bought out as we catch up with Balter's Scott Hargrave and Stirling Howland. This week marks the first anniversary since Balter's sale to CUB. For some the announcement wasn't a surprise. The prominence of the personalities behind the business seemed to create an expectation that an eventual sale was the obvious outcome. At the same time, with all of its advantages, Balter could have chosen a much easier path to that end. Instead Scott & Stirling and their team created beers that weren't just good in quality terms, they were beers that I think could fairly be described as having integrity. They didn't go after the low-hanging fruit in style terms, especially when you recall that the brand's second release was an Alt Brown Ale. Never a huge crowd pleaser. The same could be said of the brand as well as the beers and the way it seemed to genuinely engage with consumers, rather than merely sell to them. Even so, or perhaps because of these things, the reaction to the sale announcement felt a little different to ones that went before. In some ways the craft beer community was becoming used to these sales, but this sale seemed to be taken a little more personally. Even the Independent Brewing Association's statement on the sale felt a little more grudging and a touch more pointed than others. So 12 months after the sale, we wanted to touch base with the two people most visibly associated with the business operations to see what has changed over the first year. Enjoy the conversation. There are a wide range of topics that we love to discuss with brewers on Radio Brews News. One of those is the point at which classic styles and innovation and novelty clash. Regular listeners would have heard Matt's recent conversation with Bentspoke Brewing's Richard Watkins when he released his Flanders Red Ale, Flemm. There was a time - and not that long ago - when this style of beer was the epitome of sour beers. With the recent trend of kettle souring and the flavour innovations that have occurred around it - and the many consumers that have discovered tart or sour flavours in beer as a result - it was interesting to see the widely varied comments on social media by drinkers who seemed surprised by this most classic of styles. The response was a great example of the tension that I suspect we'll always see as classic and established styles crash up against craft brewing's love for adventure. But we wanted to see what brewers thought, how they navigated consumer awareness and expectations and also the demands that are placed on them in a world of ever evolving styles and consumer tastes. Thanks to Bintani, we caught up with two brewers who, while both embracing creativity and new beer styles, are also highly awarded in classic beer styles, to hear their thoughts about the ever shifting sands of beer style. Enjoy the discussion with Bentspoke's Richard Watkins and Balter's Scott Hargrave.
