As the daughter of famed restauranteur Mary Mahoney, Eileen Mahoney Ezell grew up immersed in Biloxi history and tradition. In this episode, she recalls being asked to serve as Mardi Gras Queen Ixolib for 1976. For Ezell, serving as the Gulf Coast Carnival Queen was a whirlwind of festivities. She describes the Coronation Ball, parades, and other events that make Mardi Gras so special. Mary Mahoney's Old French House Restaurant opened for business in Biloxi on May 7, 1964. Ezell remembers her mother as real people person who loved the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Since 1908, Biloxi's Mardi Gras has continue to grow and evolve into a world class celebration. In this interview recorded in 2004, Ezell discusses how the Gulf Coast Carnival Association works to ensure the future of the event while respecting traditions of the past. PHOTO: allevents.in
For many of us, we are still at the early stages of our lives with so many more adventures to go on and memories to be made, but being so young and inexperienced we often wonder what to expect as we get older. In today's episode, I would like to introduce you all to my grandmother, Kathryn Turpin, who is only 93 years young and also known as the “Carnival Queen”. She has experienced almost everything life has to offer. From meeting her first love to starting her own family and running a carnival business. For today she will share the story of her life and the thing's she's experienced in this world in the last 93 years she's been around, as well as give some advice for us younger folks. I hope her story eases up those who are feeling anxious for their future and serves as a reminder that things always do get better. So tune in, relax and enjoy the show. About Kathryn Kathryn Turpin was born on the Fairgrounds in Bethany, Missouri December 1927. The extended family was large with Sisters, Aunts, Uncles, cousins galore. Many played a part in Kathryn's life because they traveled together in the summertime on the family carnival, Kemp & Turpin United Shows. Though it was a small family carnival, it went to towns in Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa where people looked forward to spending the money they had saved up all year long for the entertainment of the Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, scrambler, tubs of fun, along with a popcorn wagon that had the best-candied apples, sno-cones, and cotton candy. Plus, there were games to play and teddy bears to be won!
Their challenges, their success, their hopes for carnival. Plus, all that glitters is not gold. How envy and jealousy can derail your own success.

As a student, Beryl Dickinson-Dash was crowned the Carnival Queen at McGill University. She wasn't at all interested in competing (in fact, she hadn't even entered herself) but her mother, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend's roommate had other ideas. Beryl was shocked when she won, and she wasn't alone in her reaction. It was 1949, and Beryl is Black. Her win was heralded as "democracy in action". Now, more than 70 years later, Beryl reflects on being a Black beauty queen, and why she hopes her win will no longer matter.
Hello everyone! Welcome to Oriental Here We Go!, your school podcast! I am Stefanie Ylarrza and on this new episode, we are going to talk about someone that is very special to our Orientalista community, I am talking about Grace Knight and also about all those volunteers that were here in our country, especially in our town Santo Tomás. For those of you who don’t know Grace Knight, let me tell you a little bit about her. She came to Colombia in 2018. Since she arrived in Santo Tomás, she won our hearts and minds because she always shared with us her great qualities and feelings. She is the best Peace Corps volunteer because she always took care of us. Grace is the best combination of smart and fun. During our English classes, we learned a lot about her. She always shared with us information related to her country, U.S.A. What we most love about her is that she is unstoppable, active and creative. She always thinks out of the box and finds solutions for every single problem. Additionally, she does not have limits in her dreams. She is a great English teacher and she is very good at gym lessons, too. Also, she is a good dancer, singer, and photographer. She is very generous because she shared her own talents with us. I was her student in one of her community classes and also in Oriental school, that’s why I am very grateful for having her as my teacher. I can say that she is my friend and I consider her that she is one of my family members. I know that all the Orientalista community is grateful for all that she did during her volunteering time and service here in Santo Tomás. She ended up her service being our Carnival Queen 2020, and we all loved it. Grace Knight, We all want to say THANK YOU for being part of our lives! Goodbyes are not forever, goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean We will be missing you until we see you again.

A great story from Graham TerMarsch - three donated Bally Big Times were used to teach kids at his son's school about reverse engineering and they ended up restoring one of the games - congratulations everyone! This week I also wanted to highlight a couple of interesting notes on the Pinside forum regarding bingos: One person has trouble with their left and right buttons in a Magic Screen game, with a simple, but easy to overlook fix: And second, another owner converts his beautiful Bally "Bikini" to have wooden rails - an interesting modification: The Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown is this weekend, June 8-10 in Denver, CO. Phil Bogema will be there this year and will be bringing two beautifully restored Bally bingos: Parade and Carnival Queen. Phil does stunning work, and I look forward to hearing the show reports from players there. Today is the penultimate "Year of Flipperless" game: 1932's Amusement Corporation of America's "Ski-Doo 23": As always you can find me on Facebook at Instagram Twitter Thank you for listening!
Carnival Queen ushers in the era of the Magic Screen! Magic Screen games are the most popular among many bingo players. Instead of a flat bingo card, there is instead a movable grid that makes up each column of the bingo card. As you move the screen, each column will shift and reveal colored sections. If you land three in the section (not necessarily adjacent!) you will win the indicated replays on the backglass. This game was also the first to feature the 'R' button to register your replays. Prior games would automatically find winners and count them up. Now, it is totally under the player's control. Backglass: Cabinet (this shows the screen revealed): Playfield: T-shirts! These will be available to pre-order only until 1/18/16.
