Can we review an 80s Star Trek game without our pacemakers exploding? What if FASA made it? We're looking at the Star Trek RPG from roughly 1983, which means (if you're counting) that it's based on the original series, the animated series, and the first three films. Is it okay or does it have to go home and copy 10 pages out of the K section of the dictionary? Let's find out! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dayworker - In the near future there is a job for everyone, a random job dolled out based on your aptitude and society's need. Skills are slotted and uploaded as needed to those best suited for the day's tasks. An ideal system of need merged with aptitude. Of course it's destined to go horribly wrong. But what happens when you find your ideal job, but not every one wants a job. Andrew J Lucas has contributed to books published by FASA, Dream Pod Nine, White Wolf Games, Rebel Minis and Atlas Games among others. He has twelve solo books for various RPG publishers and while his creative output is often blunted by his day job and the enthusiasm of his young daughter for distracting him, he does manage to get produce a few prime works each year. The last few years he has had a number of short stories published in various anthologies for publishers such as Outland Entertainment, Battlefield Press, and B Cubed Press. He also is working on a number of comic and graphic novel projects, which he is optimistic will be produced in 2022. When not working or writing he paints his wargame armies and occasionally finds time to field them in battle. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/untold-tales/support

Enfield, MD, FSHEA, FCCM, and Jerome Adams, MD, MPH, FASA, as they discuss the urgent need for health equity initiatives and innovative solutions to systemic healthcare challenges. Learn why providing accessible information and empowering individuals to advocate for their health is key. Dr. Adams was the 20th U.S. Surgeon General when the COVID-19 pandemic began and had a front-row seat to the government's response to COVID-19. Dr. Adams provided his perspective on that response in his book Crisis and Chaos: Lessons from the Front Lines of the War Against COVID-19, which was published in October 2023. The book examines the past three years since the pandemic began, but Dr. Adams said that it also applies to America's future unless changes are made. Mentorship has long been recognized as a crucial component of training physicians. Benefits of mentorship in medicine include increased productivity, improved career satisfaction, expansion of professional networks, reduction in stress, and better work-life balance. Mentorship has also been shown to aid recruitment and retention of a diverse physician workforce. The establishment of mentorship programs has been proposed as a mechanism for promoting inclusivity and diversity within academic medicine, but setting up successful programs can be challenging.Today's podcast features 3 accomplished anesthesiologists at different stages of their careers who will discuss the benefits of good mentorship programs and how to start successful programs in both academic and private practice.Scott Markowitz, MD, MSOL, is Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice-Chair for Professional Development and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Washington University in St. Louis. Join us as Dean's chat co-hosts Doctors Jeff Jensen and Johanna Richey interview Dr. Matthew Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu, founders of the Foot and Ankle Surgical Academy. Dr. Cobb received his doctorate of podiatric medicine from the California School of Podiatric Medicine with Samuel Merritt University in Oakland in 2005. He went on to complete his 3-year surgical residency training program with Kaiser Permanente's San Francisco, Bay Area Foot, and Ankle Residency program. Dr. Haywan Chiu received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and did his doctorate of Podiatric medicine at Temple University. He completed his 3-year surgical residency program with DVA Palo Alto Podiatry residency program and Stanford University. Dr. Matt Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu discuss their experiences in podiatry and the development of the academy, providing valuable resources for students, residents, and faculty. Dr. Cobb specializes in reconstructive surgery with a focus on pediatrics, bringing a unique perspective to the field. Tune in to learn more about their journey and the impact of the academy on the podiatric community. Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu (along with 2 of their colleagues) began recording their surgeries to share with their students and residents to facilitate distance learning. They hoped to keep their residents engaged in learning surgical procedures even if they were not able to be physically present in the operating room due to pandemic restrictions/limitations. Listen as they describe their experiences with adaptability, flexibility, and leaning into technology to help advance surgical education. We discuss how vulnerability can help broaden opportunities and break down barriers to quality education. The Foot and Ankle Surgery Academy, also known as FASA, was established during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to the challenges faced by students, residents, and faculty in podiatric medicine. Dr. Matt Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu, the founders, recognized the impact of the pandemic on surgical training, with elective surgeries being canceled and limited opportunities for residents to gain hands-on experience in the operating room. This led to the idea of creating a platform where surgical procedures could be filmed and shared with the podiatric community. The primary goal of FASA is to provide educational resources through video compilations of various surgeries, accompanied by voiceovers from the primary surgeons. The videos aim to offer a detailed insight into the decision-making process, techniques, and nuances of podiatric surgeries. The founders emphasize showcasing not only the technical aspects of surgery but also the thought process behind each step. The creation of FASA allowed for a unique learning experience for students, residents, and faculty. The videos provided a visual representation of surgeries, allowing viewers to observe the procedures in detail. The platform also offered a space for discussion and reflection on different approaches to surgery, highlighting the importance of decision-making and adaptability in the operating room. Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu also discuss how the ability to make sound decisions during surgery is crucial, as it can determine the overall success of the procedure. They shared examples of cases where high-risk decisions led to positive outcomes, showcasing the significance of thoughtful and strategic decision-making in surgical practice. Dr. Cobb shares a valuable insight from his mentor, Shannon Rush, who emphasized the importance of stepping in right before a mistake is made that cannot be fixed. This highlights the critical role of experienced surgeons in guiding residents and younger surgeons to make the right decisions during procedures. Dr. Cobb's experience with Dr. Rush exemplifies how mentorship and guidance from seasoned professionals can shape a surgeon's decision-making process and ultimately lead to better outcomes for patients. The discussion also touched on the challenge of maintaining focus and presence during surgeries, with Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu emphasizing the need for residents to stay engaged and attentive throughout the entire procedure. They highlighted the potential consequences of zoning out or losing focus, underscoring the importance of being mentally present and focused on the task at hand to ensure successful surgical outcomes. They also share a personal experience where he and his colleague would remind residents not to zone out during surgeries, especially during critical moments like organ closures. He stressed the impact of losing focus, mentioning the potential consequences such as infections and compromised outcomes due to laziness or distraction. Dr. Chiu mentioned the challenge of teaching this mental integration component, as it goes beyond technical skills and requires a deep level of concentration and mindfulness. The discussion touched on the concept of neuroplasticity and focus, highlighting the variability in individuals' abilities to maintain focus for extended periods. https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? RAPM Editor-in-Chief Brian Sites, MD, joins Lei Xu, MD, and Ed Mariano, MD, MAS, FASA, FASRA, two coauthors of “Rate of occurrence of respiratory complications in patients who undergo shoulder arthroplasty with a continuous interscalene brachial plexus block and associated risk factors,” first published in May 2023. Dr. Xu is a clinical assistant professor in the department of anesthesiology at Stanford. She received her medical degree from Stanford before completing her residency in anesthesiology at the University of California San Francisco, and then a fellowship in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine at Stanford. She is interested in the application of regional anesthesia outside the operating room. Her research interests include studying the functional outcomes of clinical pathways that include regional anesthesia in the primary arthroplasty in acute trauma populations. Dr. Mariano is a professor and senior vice chair in the department of anesthesiology at Stanford. He has developed techniques and patient care pathways to improve post-operative pain, patient safety, and other outcomes, and has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles. He has held leadership positions in the California Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and multiple journal editorial boards. In their retrospective observational study, over 1,000 patients were evaluated undergoing total shoulder replacement with a continuous interscalene block. Respiratory complications were categorized into four groups: none, mild, moderate, and severe. Interscalene blocks are important to the success of these surgeries, but there remain concerns about respiratory morbidity. *The purpose of this podcast is to educate and to inform. For the fourth installment of our Very Deep Dive on Bootfitting, we talked with Jake "Fasa" Nelson, who not only works at the Moment Ski Factory, but also happens to run one of the best bootfitting shops in the Reno area. Fasa runs us through what a “big-mountain freeride” approach to bootfitting looks like; how his background in running informs his understanding of feet and biomechanics, how to work with the unique preferences of athletes (and some of the insanity that athletes can tolerate); what it means to be a “tour guide” rather than a bootfitter; and much more.TOPICS AND TIMES Self-taught bootfitting & mentorship (1:59)Moment Factory Showroom & Store (4:58)Big-mountain freeride approach to bootfitting (8:18)Suspension and shock absorption in the system (14:03)Running vs. skiing (20:13)Feet are adaptive and can be trained (24:27)Custom Insoles (32:11)Fitting preferences for athletes (38:42)Circulation & gauging tolerance (45:42)Touring or 50/50 boots (53:06)Bootfitting is subjective (1:00:47)A tour guide, not a bootfitter (1:06:12)RELATED LINKS:A Very Deep Dive on Bootfitting, Pt 1: The BasicsA Very Deep Dive on Bootfitting, Pt. 2: Your Questions by Sam and KaraA Very Deep Dive on Bootfitting, Pt. 3: Stance Balancing with Pulse Boot LabsA Very Deep Dive on Ski BootsBecome a Blister Member / Get our Buyer's GuideSubscribe to our Gear Giveaways & NewsletterOUR OTHER PODCASTS:CRAFTED Bikes & Big IdeasOff The CouchBLISTER Podcast Hosted on Acast.
