This is Freud's first extended treatment of religion as such, with a particular emphasis on ritual, and, in classic Freudian style, sees him provocatively linking individual symptoms with broader cultural formations. But what does Freud mean by “religion” anyway, in relation to his Jewish heritage on the one hand and his overwhelmingly Catholic Austrian milieu on the other? What can looking at the nuances of Freud's German reveal about his understanding of what we would today call obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)? What are we to make of his account of individual “obsessional neuroses” as a kind of “private suffering” versus the collective work done by shared public rituals, and how does that bear on Freud's ideas about the origins of our beliefs and, per Freud, our “ignorance” about them? And what is the character of Freud's feelings about religion – is his just a stance of disillusionment, or is it tinged by a more personal ambivalence, perhaps even one that's particularly recognizable this holiday season? Plus: Martin Luther's bowel troubles, the importance of respecting Melusine's boundaries, and objections to Christmas standards at church dances from an unexpected source.Texts discussed include:Sigmund Freud, “Religious Actions and Obsessive Practices.”Donald Capps, Freud and Freudians on Religion: A Reader. During the month of June, applications to become a TFI Advocate are open! TFI Advocates bridge the gap between churches and agencies right in their local community. Get the details and apply right here. Whether a child has experienced foster care or adoption, there is history and trauma to navigate. As you can imagine, this can spill over into eating habits, behavior issues, and affect children's sleep. Many foster parents and caregivers experience the difficulty of seeking help from someone trained in both foster/adoptive backgrounds and sleep practices. That was the case for my guest, Allison Ezell. When her first adopted son came home from China in 2016, she spent years unsuccessfully searching for sleep help that took into account his history. Today, she now gets to do for others what no one could do for her all those years ago: build a bridge between sleep science principles and trauma-informed care. Allison is a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant and a mom of four through birth, foster care, and international adoption. She has a special passion for working with foster and adoptive families who are navigating sleep issues with their children. In this episode, you'll learn how isolating dealing with sleep issues in children who have experienced trauma can be, the importance of setting realistic expectations based on a child's history and biology, navigating bedtime with multiple children, and so much more. Reality and unscripted television are often anything but that. Part two picks up right where part one left off, so make sure to listen to that episode if you want to hear Callie's full story.   In this episode, we talk about Callie's experiences and emotions as she began working toward an exit strategy to leave the cult. We follow Callie as she attempts to integrate back into normality, with things like meeting new friends, dating, and finding new work all haunted by the backdrop of her decade-long cult experience and the anxiety, stress, and trauma that she carried from it. Her difficulty reintegrating with normal life eventually led her to therapy and discovering art as a way to express herself.    Callie is very vulnerable in this episode, and gives us an honest depiction about what her experience was. This episode will help you view other human beings with compassion and empathy so that we can all go through life with our eyes wide open. Today's episode of Eyes Wide Open is part one of two where I talked to Callie Ezell. Callie is a Chicago-based abstract artist and founder-entrepreneur with Mcmillan Street Art. We recently got connected through a mutual friend, who told me that Callie spent 10 years of her life in a cult.    Reality and unscripted television are often anything but that. Join us in demanding that producers add a mandatory disclaimer before and after each episode, underscoring that episodes are for entertainment purposes only, and the content can be edited, manipulated, and presented in any order for storyline purposes. https://sign.moveon.org/petitions/add-a-disclaimer-to-all-reality-television-programming    For those of you who've been following my post-Love Is Blind journey, you may have seen me compare elements of the production process to being part of a cult. This was inspired and informed by my conversations with Callie, because a lot of what she has shared with me about her experience in this cult was very similar to what I and my fellow cast members experienced when we participated in the Love is Blind experiment.   Callie's story was way too difficult for us to cover in one episode, so we split it up into two parts. In part one, Callie will help us understand how she was recruited by this cult, what her first day and year was like, what she experienced from a control perspective, and what her life was like while she was living within this program. In the upcoming part two, we will focus on how Callie came to realize what was happening and how she got out.   I hope that this episode opens your eyes to some of the control mechanisms and horrific practices that are happening in our real world, and how this can really happen to anyone. Callie's story is something that I think is really important for everybody to hear, and I hope that this helps you go through life with your eyes wide open. Then he talks to Prof. Jerel Ezell about how to address the public health swag gap.

At a contentious meeting, an Ohio commission delayed a vote to approve fracking under state parks. A production about fossil fuel extraction is headed to western Pennsylvania. “Ezell, Ballad of a Land Man” delves into the complex issues of fracking and belonging. We talk with its writer and a local advocate about why it resonates with our region. Plus, we head to an orchard in Mercer County using regenerative farming techniques like spreading manure from local goats. And we stop at the first-ever Pittsburgh County Fair celebrating urban farming.  We have news about an updated environmental justice policy for Pennsylvania and a new paper shows that utilities and regulators will need to consider how home energy storage systems will affect the grid.

Are you ready to redefine failure and discover how to tap into confidence? I'm chatting with Dr. Brittney Ezell, a former athlete and motivational speaker, who shares her unique perspective on failure, courage, and quitting. Here are the key takeaways from this thought-provoking discussion: 1. Failure is Not the End. Brittney emphasizes that failure is not the opposite of success but an integral part of it. It's an event, not a quality of a person. Instead of fearing failure, we should embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow. 2. Courage is a Choice. Courage isn't an inherent trait; it's a choice we make when faced with challenges. By acknowledging that courage can be summoned when needed, we can build our confidence over time. 3. Confidence is Rooted in Past Success. Confidence is not something we can instantly generate. It's a product of our past successes. Building confidence is like stacking small wins, which eventually lead to a strong belief in oneself. 4. The Importance of Mentorship. Surrounding yourself with mentors who hold up a mirror to your potential can be transformational. They help you see your unique strengths and capabilities. 5. Quitting vs. Pivoting. Quitting is giving up on yourself; it's discarding your skills, experiences, and unique qualities. Pivoting, on the other hand, is about redirecting your path while retaining your core self. Dr. Brittney Ezell will be a keynote at The Maine Women's Conference on October 25 in Portland, Maine.
