This week we’re introducing you to a powerful new podcast, Senseless with Erika Mahoney. Everything changed one ordinary Monday, when Erika Mahoney’s mom called to say there was an active shooter at the grocery store nearby. In a matter of seconds, ten people were killed – including Erika’s father. With the high-profile trial of the shooter as a backdrop, Erika speaks to survivors of mass shootings, community leaders, and others impacted by the tragedy in Boulder, on her deeply personal quest to move forward after the unthinkable. Mass shootings have become a daily, uniquely American tragedy. But what happens to those left behind afterward? Senseless is a raw, unfiltered journey through grief, trauma, resilience, and moving forward after your world shatters forever. We’re going to play you a clip from the first episode when Erika’s life gets turned upside down. We welcome Dennis Mahoney, author of Our Winter Monster, to talk about the craft of characters. We talk about how he thinks of character, how he thinks about conflict, story, and plot, and why he writes to break archetypes in his fiction while still remaining authentic to the human messiness of art.You can find Dennis Mahoney online at www.equinoxsociety.com, and you can find Our Winter Monster at your local library or favorite book retailer now from Soho Press. In RTB 151, you heard the Kristin, Nasser and John discussing what might happen before their Northeastern Victorian Studies Association conference actually took place. This episode, recorded a few weeks later, looks back at what actually occurred and see how it aligned with or defied the panelists' prior expectations. The three discuss what it means to have an emergent and residual shticks; differences between how you prepare to talk to undergraduates and your peers matter, and the three agree that going in without any expectations of your audience makes for a weaker presentation. Imaginary interlocution makes for better pre-gaming. Kristin Mahoney 's books include Literature and the Politics of Post-Victorian Decadence (Cambridge UP, 2015) and Queer Kinship After Wilde: Transnational Decadence and the Family. Nasser Mufti 's first scholarly book was Civilizing War and he is currently working on a monograph about what Britain's nineteenth century looks like from the perspective of such anti-colonial thinkers as C.L.R. Most scholars are both haunted, even undone, by the task of writing papers for peers and traveling to strange campuses to deliver them. Yet we keep it up--we inflict it on our peers, we inflict it on ourselves. Why? To answer that question, Recall This Book assembled three (if you count John) scholars of Victorian literature asked to speak at the Spring 2025 Northeastern Victorian Studies Association conference. Their discussion began with the idea that agreeing to give papers is an act of “externalized self-promising” and ranged across the reasons that floating ideas before our peers is terrifying, exhilarating and ultimately necessary. Since 1965, the Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola, has held an incredibly popular public event known as the Prison Rodeo where incarcerated men participate for cash prizes in contests so dangerous they have been banned from the professional rodeo circuit. Adam Mahoney is a reporter at Capital B and the author of a recent article titled The Wildest Show in the South: Spectacle and Suffering at America's Biggest Prison. For this episode, Adam discusses with me the surreal reality of the Angola prison rodeo and his experience attending, gives me a background on the dark history of the penitentiary itself, and tells me the various perspectives of those involved in this shocking and deeply American spectacle. This episode of 'The Heart Of It' is a barrel of laughs. Ali is joined by BFF Cath Mahoney and lets just say these two bring out a cheeky side of each other (emphasis on cheeky). Being 50 and single wasn’t exactly where Cathy Mahoney thought she’d be at this stage of life — but she’s embraced it with open arms and an open mind. From dating apps and kink platforms to some truly wild (and hilarious) encounters, Cath is diving headfirst into the dating world and discovering a bold new side of herself. Even attending a BDSM workshop — because why not? This episode is a raw, funny, and empowering look at exploring sexuality, identity, and self-worth later in life… and doing it all unapologetically. In this episode of the HAYVN Hubcast, host Nancy Sheed sat down with Rachael Mahoney, founder of Kinney Lane, a prepared foods company rooted in wellness, simplicity, and community connection. What started as a personal journey toward health became a mission to nourish others, literally and emotionally, with every meal. Rachael shares how her summers spent on Kinney Lane in upstate New York planted the seeds for her love of fresh food and wholesome living. From working in ad tech to launching her food business out of her home kitchen while pregnant, her story is one of grit, intuition, and deep listening, to her body, her community, and her calling. Key Takeaways: A business born from struggle: Rachael's own health and fertility challenges led her to radically change her lifestyle and, ultimately, to start Kinney Lane. Trusting the timing: She didn't have it all figured out when she started. Rachael focused on doing what she could with what she had, even if it meant 4 a.m. kitchen shifts with an infant in tow. Community-centered growth: Listening closely to her customers helped her refine her offerings and expand into meal delivery. Team building takes time: Finding the right hires was a five-year journey, but now her business can thrive without her being in the kitchen every day. Infertility, resilience, and joy: Rachael vulnerably shares the emotional moment she found out she was pregnant after being told it wasn't possible. That turning point gave her the push to pursue her business wholeheartedly. If you've ever wondered when the right time to start something is—or how to turn your personal experience into purpose—this conversation will inspire you.
