Gaza – The Gates of HellLast Saturday millions across the world, including here in Belfast, participated in one of the biggest ever solidarity events as part of a Global Day of Action in support of the Palestinian people. At the same time dozens of boats, and hundreds of human rights activists, are taking part in the largest civilian freedom flotilla. Among them are three senior Sinn Féin representatives; Lynn Boylan MEP, Seanadoir Chris Andrews and Shónagh Ní Raghallaigh TD. They are all on their way to the Gaza Strip in a courageous effort to break Israel's illegal blockade. Their aim is to deliver much needed food and medicine to the people of that besieged territory.Next month will mark two years since the commencement of the Israeli genocide assault against the Palestinian people, following the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023. The statistics of death and destruction are horrendous. To date almost 65,000 Palestinians have been confirmed as killed with many thousands more buried under the rubble of Gaza. Almost 20,000 children have been murdered and tens of thousands have suffered serious injuries, many of them life changing.UNICEF has described the situation in Gaza City as catastrophic with starvation now an integral part of Israel's genocidal war against civilians. Eight Palestinian children die every day from starvation. The Israeli forces kill 28 children every day. Over 350 children are daily being admitted to the limited U.N. facilities still operating within the Gaza Strip, suffering from acute malnutrition. Many will not survive and those who do will suffer from health problems for the rest of their lives because of this experience. The Voice of Hind RajabMovies can uplift and depress, frighten and inspire, and occasionally make us laugh. The Irish experience, through films like Hunger, which tells the story of Bobby Sands; In the Name of the Father which recounts the miscarriage of Justice experienced by the Guildford Four; of Michael Collins; Bloody Sunday and others is evidence of this. These movies focussed on important political or historical events while successfully and emotionally impacting on audiences.Last week ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab' received the longest ever standing ovation at the Venice film festival and won the Silver Lion prize. It is a drama based on true events – the killing by Israel of a five-year-old Palestinian child, Hind Rajab, in Gaza in January 2024.Hind was in a car with her Aunt and Uncle and four cousins trying to flee Israeli forces. Their car was struck by a shell and the adults and three children were killed. An Israeli tank fired consistently into the trapped vehicle. The fourth cousin was later killed. Hind was alone, surrounded by the bodies of her relatives. She spent hours on a mobile phone with the Palestine Red Crescent Society. She was terrified. She pleaded for help. “Come take me. You will come and take me? … I'm so scared, please come. Please call someone to come and take me.” Desperately the Red Crescent sought clearance from the Israeli Army to send an ambulance. They never got it.Van The ManA very happy 80th birthday to Van Morrison. This column is a big fan of Van the Mans music. It is great that he is still so creative. His latest offering Remembering Now is a gem. It is reflective and musically very very positive and uplifting. Not bad for a man who started in the sixties . Still going strong. This actually happened (not as bad but still) to my Aunt
Last year, after our True Crime Tuesday segment aired on KOIN's AM Extra, we received an email from the family of Alana Carroll- a woman whose story we had featured. Melissa, Alana's Aunt, along with Joyce, Alana's Grandmother, wanted to share Alana's story. For someone who didn't know Alana, her disappearance can be easily ignored, forgotten, or dismissed. As is the case with anyone who disappears or is murdered, there is so much more to the story and person. Alana wasn't disposable. She wasn't a junkie who no one loved. She was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a friend. And this August will mark two years since she was last seen alive. Her family is desperate for answers…and they hope you can help find their beloved Alana. For photos of Alana, the car accident she survived and what her body went through, visit our blog at murderintherain.comCourt records: Witnesses say man called ‘freaking out' with missing woman's body - Missing Clark County woman now presumed dead, investigators have identified a suspect - The Columbian - https://wsp.wa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Alana-Carroll.pdf - Clark County deputies confirm death of woman missing since 2023 - Alana Ranae Carroll – The Charley Project - Missing woman Alana Carroll presumed dead in Clark County - BeenVerified - Alana Carroll - Illegal substances are part of addiction problem in Oregon, but alcohol is biggest killer - OPB - Opioid Data | Washington State Department of Health - FindAGrave.com - The Columbian - Oct. 3 2000- Obituary - Been Verified Court Cases - BG man arrested for weapons, heroin possession | The Reflector - The Daily Astorian - Nov 29 1982- Marijuana Seized - The Columbian - June 30 1992 - Editorial - The Columbian - July 24 1992 - Editorial - Longview Daily News - May 27 2011 - Police Blotter -BG man arrested for weapons, heroin possession | The Reflector -The Columbian Nov 29 1982- Bust (PHOTO) - The Columbian Jan 20 1983 - Family pleads guilty to selling marijuana - The Columbian Feb 25 1983 - Kidnapped boy pleads guilty - The Columbian March 31 1983 - Courts - The Columbian June 4 2008 - Suspected heroin dealer arrested in Battle Ground - BeenVerified.com - Luke A. Life is complicated for a Chinese-Canadian lesbian college kid with PTSD who is also half tiger - complicated enough, you would think, but complication invites complication, and soon she has to ask herself like questions like "is this the apocalypse" and "am I partially responsible for it." Those are pretty standard questions these days, admittedly, and that core of relatability is what keeps a rangy, stressful, fascinating book mostly on the rails.

When tonight's guest, Curt, was a kid, he had a group of sightings on the outskirts of Yreka, California in July of 1983. His sightings happened one after the other, in the span of less than an hour's time. The first sighting happened while he was playing a game of hide n seek with his brother, sister, and some friends at a school that was behind Curt's Aunt's apartment complex. The kids split up into two teams and Curt's team was picked to be the team that would hide. His brother's team was going to try to find the members of Curt's team. The kids were playing the game to have some fun and excitement. What happened not long after they started playing the game gave them way more excitement than any of them were hoping to have. We hope you'll tune in and listen to Curt break down what happened to him that night. If you've had a Sasquatch sighting and would like to be a guest on the show, please go to BigfootEyewitness.com and let me know. In potentially the biggest story of the Season (somehow even bigger than the Fifth Doctor's debut in Castrovalva), we have Cybermen! Androids! Gritty troopers and gritty freighter crew! Oh, and we say goodbye to a much loved (lol) companion in what is quite possibly the most dramatic way since… well… the 1960s? Yup, it's Earthshock! Join us as we discuss how the designers on Starship Troopers must've been huge Doctor Who fans, how the Cybermen seem to have recruited Daft Punk to do their dirty work, their completely bonkers plan, how Captain Briggs is surprisingly enjoyable (even if she was played as if she were your drunken Aunt), and, of course, we have to talk about THE ending of the story. Poor Diana has to say goodbye to Adric – and she may have even shed a tear or two… If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). John remembers the late great Ozzy Osbourne who passed away at the age of 76. Then, he discusses the House ending its session early for a month-long break. This decision comes after Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly lost control of the House Rules Committee and amidst Republican clashes over a potential vote on the release of Jeffrey Epstein files. And he talks about Trump selling a new version of an old lie, calling Russia meddling charges leveled by Tulsi Gabbard clear evidence of treason by Pres. Obama and then-VP Biden. Next, he speaks with Professor Corey Brettschneider and they break down Trump's latest disinformation attacks against Obama, the erosion of free speech rights for noncitizens critical of Israel, and the DOJ's troubling loss in the Harvard funding case. Then, he interviews DR. Phillip Polakoff on the crisis level of inequality in the accessibility and quality of healthcare in the U.S. And lastly, John welcomes back comedian Keith Price to joke with listeners about trending topics and politics.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Juliet Prowse: Born to Dance: The Extraordinary Life Story of My AuntIn this episode, I discussed with Juliet Prowse regarding her book about her Aunt Juliet Prowse. Juliet Prowse was a young South African dancer and entertainer who burst into the international spotlight in her first Hollywood movie, Can-Can. Considered talented and exotic, she caught the media's attention and her engagement to Frank Sinatra fuelled their fascination further. But was it love and what did Sinatra make of Juliet's relationship with Elvis during G.I. Blues? Unhappy with 20th Century Fox, Juliet broke out of her contract, created her own company and became one of the highest paid dancers of her era on a $1 million Las Vegas contract in the mid-1970s.
We conclude this series this week with Part 3. To make it easier for you to remember the outline for the last two weeks we've included all three weeks below. Part 1 It is hard. Life is busy all by itself, but caring for aging parents doubles or triples the load. Some parents are pretty much on their own all the way through life, but others need lots of help and care. As much as possible, plan ahead before care is needed. Talk with all the family who is involved or who will be. If possible, purchase insurance plans that will help. Perhaps pay for them as a family. Secure wills and power of attorneys and bank accounts and all that while it can be done easily. Have a plan as to who is in charge and who will help and how it will be done. Be prepared for misunderstanding and difficult responses Remember truth when accusations are made Remember truth when challenges occur Part 2 It needs to be a WE affair and not a ME affair Get everyone involved Brothers and sisters Typically best to give someone power of attorney Typically best to give someone the power of the money Aunts and uncles They can spend nights They can transport to appointments Sons and daughters If you parents live with you, the kids can help with them Spouse Communicate Prioritize On both sides The one who is care-giving needs love and understanding as they give to their parent The one who is married to the care-giver needs the same as they give to their spouse Everyone should get involved One person likely cannot do it by themselves Each person must shoulder some responsibility Make it a practical matter Prepare wisely Think ahead while the decision is easy Decide ahead of time as many things as possible Have a will Have a living will Have all information and important papers located and available Plan carefully Sit down with as many people as possible to make a plan Someone should be designated as the one who “takes-charge” Talk continually Keep everyone in the loop Keep everyone organized Perhaps use a group text morning and evening Part 3 4. Schedule specific responsibilities Living arrangements Driving arrangements Appointments Events Financial arrangements Know your limitations Some things can be done Some things cannot be done Some times you need a break Never allow yourself to feel guilty for taking a break when it is needed Some questions How do you handle difficult parents? Do the right thing The right thing is to keep caring The right thing may be to allow someone else to do the caring Do the hard thing You may have to choose a nursing home You many have to choose assisted living Allow someone to have veto power over your decisions? By that I mean limited veto power Limited by time (they can override for a set amount of time) How do you handle parents with whom you have little or no relationship? Prayerfully Pray about it Seek counsel as you pray Wisely If you have no relationship, you do not have to carry the burden of responsibility If you have a damaged relationship, seek to make things right If you cannot make things right, you may need to allow others to serve as the care-giver and you serve as a helper . . .
