Sen. Scott DeLano, a Republican from Biloxi, says Mississippi has done little to help protect South Mississippians from storm damages and residents statewide from rising insurance costs in the 20 years since Hurricane Katrina. He says Mississippi lags behind other Gulf states, in part, because the state insurance commissioner has not pushed for a robust mitigation program. DeLano also addresses his recent social media post blasting a state Republican think tank leader's comments that many viewed as racist.

Flair on The Clay Edwards Show: Wrestling Icon Talks Legacy, Cannabis, and Life At Southern Sky Brands in Canton, MS, wrestling legend Ric Flair joined host Clay Edwards for a lively interview blending nostalgia, business, and personal insights. Edwards, a fan since childhood, shared a vivid memory: watching TBS wrestling at 5:05 p.m., where the Four Horsemen broke Dusty Rhodes' leg. His grandfather called Flair "the dirtiest motherfucker in the game"—a compliment in Flair's eyes. At 48, Edwards thanked Flair for decades of memories. Flair's favorite era? NWA in the 1980s. He recalled Jackson Coliseum shows and nights at the Reservoir, bars like The Dock (now gone) and Martin's (still thriving). The chat focused on Flair's "Ric Flair Drip" cannabis line with Southern Sky. Overwhelmed by the facility's quality, Flair praised the team and sales across 200 dispensaries. Edwards, after touring, called it true medical-grade; if he partook, it'd be Flair's brand over competitors. Entry into cannabis came via a late associate and Mike Tyson, a friend since the '80s. Tyson, still in shape post-Jake Paul fight, partnered with Flair. Flair stays fit, deadlifting 400 lbs. Being Flair means constant fame—photos everywhere, but 99% positive. "Living the gimmick" has pitfalls, like tax issues, but he enjoys it. Edwards dubbed him a true icon. Hulk Hogan's recent death added poignancy; Flair plans Biloxi visits before Sept. 2, appearances in 14 states, CarShield ads with Ice-T, and autograph sessions. WOO Energy drink eyes China and Thailand markets. Travel tales included urging Edwards to visit Malaysia; Edwards shared his flying fear and brief LA stint. Excited for Ric Flair Drip's growth, Flair credits Southern Sky's promotion. He appreciates Mississippi's warmth (and drinking prowess over Canadians). On WWE's ESPN deal, Flair's humble: they're printing money. Hogan's decline—surgeries left him diminished—sparked anxiety; Flair's 2017 crisis (organ failure, ICU, stoma) led to life-support limits. Edwards thanked Flair, eager for more MS visits. Flair reciprocated, honored to share his story.

With a new legal thriller on the horizon, we're revisiting James Patterson's 2024 interview about #1 Lawyer. The bestselling author shares how he builds courtroom suspense and what makes a legal story truly gripping. —-- James Patterson has written bestsellers in many genres. But as he tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles in this episode of The Modern Law Library, he has always been fascinated by legal thrillers, courtroom dramas and crime novels. He even considered becoming a lawyer, before his literary career took off. In his newest release, The #1 Lawyer, James Patterson partnered with co-author Nancy Allen to tell the story of Stafford Lee Penney, a criminal defense attorney in Biloxi, Mississippi, who's never lost a case. But after handing a high-profile murder trial involving the son of a mobster, Penney finds himself on the other side of the bench as a defendant himself, charged with murdering his own wife. Patterson has written and co-written more than 300 books, including bestselling series like Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club and Maximum Ride. He had some writing tips for attorneys, particularly on how to work collaboratively. As Patterson tells listeners in the podcast, he is open about working with other writers on many of his books, and he finds tools like outlining absolutely essential. He also shares with Rawles how he thinks co-writers should handle interpersonal communication while working together. Patterson says one of the major benefits of working with co-authors is pulling from their experiences to make his books more accurate and true to life. When he wrote The President is Missing with Bill Clinton, the former president could tell Patterson the inside details of how a Secret Service detail worked. When he wrote Run, Rose, Run with Dolly Parton, she walked him through the production cycle for a song. Allen, who conducted more than 30 jury trials as a prosecutor in Missouri and taught law for 15 years at Missouri State University, contributed her firsthand courtroom experience to The #1 Lawyer. Patterson says they worked to make everything as accurate as possible—while still allowing for a good story. It's the pair's second book together, following a previous standalone novel, Juror #3. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Patterson shares some of his favorite law-related pop culture picks; news about new and ongoing projects; and describes a very special birthday event with Dolly Parton. He also discusses how his children's series Maximum Ride got caught up in Florida book bans in 2023. For fans of Patterson's breakout success, the Alex Cross series launched in 1993 with Along Came a Spider, the author shares updates about what's next for the intrepid detective—including details about the upcoming Amazon Prime TV series Cross, starring Aldis Hodge.

Kyle shares his personal stories of running the humid roads of Memphis, Gulf Shores, Biloxi, and more — including the only DNF that still nags at him (and why he's going back for sweet redemption). We'll break down ten must-run Southern races, from Atlanta's iconic Peachtree Road Race to the pirate party of Gasparilla and the bourbon-soaked relay through Kentucky's distilleries. Along the way, we celebrate what makes the South so special: warm welcomes, post-race BBQ, medals shaped like pigs and pirate ships, and aid stations that feel like your grandma's porch. The Southern running scene is less about speed and more about showing up, sticking it out through the heat, and raising a toast together at the end. So grab your sweet tea, sit back, and get ready to plan your next humid adventure — because these Southern miles will stick with you long after the sweat dries.

On this episode of Agency Nation Radio, we meet Courtney Jacobs, owner of Insurance Done Right (IDR) in Biloxi, Mississippi. Since launching her agency seven years ago, Jacobs has navigated the complexities of growing a business along the Gulf Coast—where the unique challenges of flood insurance and storm exposure are a constant concern—while also serving in the Air National Guard and giving back to her community through various organizations. "We have seen a large impact since the flood rates changed a few years ago, which is counting a lot of people out from some of these bigger homes or projects," Jacobs explains. "Because of our extra exposure down here in the lower six counties in Mississippi, we're definitely feeling the rate increases. The beauty is that I do have the options as an independent broker, which I do appreciate. But it's tough because some people just can't afford it." "We do a lot of fundraising for the homeless or for women's shelters," Jacobs says when asked about her philanthropy endeavors. "Through those different platforms and organizations, I'm donating, I'm giving back, I'm raising money. Just anything that impacts my community for the better." Agency Nation Radio is where insurance professionals turn on the mic and share unscripted stories about leadership, technology, marketing, success and failure—stories that helped make them the professionals they are today. From Main Street USA to the pages of Independent Agent magazine—we've got the stories you want to hear. Quality Poultry and Seafood—another iconic Gulf Coast business—had sold mislabeled fish to other restaurants, too. Eventually, both businesses had to forfeit more than a million dollars apiece. In this episode, a partnership with Gravy, a podcast from the Southern Foodways Alliance, reporter Boyce Upholt reports on how mislabeled, imported seafood has damaged local fishing fleets in places like Biloxi, which for more than a century has claimed to be the “seafood capital of the world.”

My home away from home.  During our visit, a particular light caught my eye.  In the glass case was a slim lighter with a striking copper and gunmetal color scheme that I thought looked really great. I asked, Rob, one of the tobacconist there if he could bring it out of the case to let me check it out.  Soon as he put it in my hand, it never made it back in the case. That light was the Rocky Patel H. E. lighter.  The light was very sturdily built with a good heft.  Its a single flame lighter with a stronger pinpoint flame.  I don't know the type or name of the jet flame, but I've seen it before in other higher end lighters.  It has a blue ring inside and the flame has a flower shape when ignited at the bottom.  You've probably seen these as well.  For more details on what I think about the lighter, check out the video. Coop and I (Ben) drove down to New Orleans form North Carolina for the PCA trade show and, while on the way, we stopped by The Cigar Shop in Biloxi, MS for a visit.  As most of you know, this is my first home shop. In “Oh, Snapper! Mislabeled Mississippi Seafood,” Gravy producer Boyce Upholt takes listeners to Biloxi, Mississippi—a town that has long called itself the Seafood Capital of the World. But in May 2024, shocking news hit the community: Mary Mahoney's Old French House, an iconic restaurant, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to misbrand fish and wire fraud. For years, the iconic 60-year-old establishment had been selling cheap imported fish as premium local Gulf seafood, defrauding more than 55,000 customers. What makes this story particularly fascinating is the public's reaction, or lack thereof. Despite learning they'd been deceived, loyal diners packed Mary Mahoney's after the guilty plea, with customers posting on Facebook about their continued support for “their favorite restaurant.” This unexpected response reveals the complexities of the local identity in a place that is grappling with economic and environmental change. Biloxi's seafood industry once thrived on genuine abundance. Indigenous peoples had harvested oysters here for thousands of years, and by 1904, the town earned its “seafood capital” moniker through a booming cannery industry that shipped Gulf oysters nationally and internationally. But the same forces that built Biloxi's reputation—industrialization and globalization—eventually undermined it. Imported seafood began dragging down local prices in the 1980s, and disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill further devastated the fishing fleet. Mary Mahoney's fraud, meanwhile, turned out to be just the tip of an iceberg. A consulting group used genetic testing and found that out of 44 area restaurants, only 8 were properly labeling their shrimp. Yet Biloxi's dining scene is also experiencing a renaissance. Chefs like Alex Perry at Vestige and Austin Sumrall at White Pillars have earned James Beard nominations while championing local ingredients and sustainable sourcing. Even at more casual spots like Bradley's—located inside a gas station—proprietors prove that serving authentic Gulf seafood can be both affordable and profitable. What parts of Biloxi's identity matter? What does it mean, really, to be local? As Biloxi transforms from a working fishing port into a tourist destination dotted with casinos and chain restaurants, the town faces a choice about what parts of its heritage to preserve. The seafood fraud scandal serves as a mirror, reflecting not just economic pressures but cultural ones—revealing how a community that built its identity on the ocean's bounty must now decide whether that connection still matters. We explore how his background in trauma care, disaster response, and Jewish values has informed a bold philanthropic strategy in a time of volatility and uncertainty. You'll hear how the L.A. Federation evacuated 300,000 residents, reopened early childhood centers, and launched new funds to restore Jewish communal life—from preschools to summer camps to professional pipelines.
