It's music festival season and David speaks to an artist about the upcoming Caribbean Carnival and how the history is darker and more colourful than the feathered headgear. And a musical tour of Little Jamaica which was one of the largest producers of reggae music outside of Jamaica...it will have you dancing.
The Party Room Squad was founded in 1995 by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Montes Jr. The Party Room Squad's mission is to introduce, educate and promote the Caribbean Carnival to the younger generation in the neighborhood and to preserve the Caribbean Carnival's traditions that were slowly eluding our new adopted culture. The Party Room Squad assures that it emphasizes to its masqueraders the possibility of the global reach that can be obtained; that the historical roots are maintained; and a multiracial patrimony is developed to protect the Caribbean Carnival's standing in the community. While emphasizing the history of the Caribbean Carnival, the younger generation is exposed to the different views and cultural aspects that would be unavailable to them if not for their participation with The Party Room Squad. The younger generation is tasked to be creative and become the central focus of our current achievements. At the beginning of the Carnival season, some of the younger members of the Party Room Squad work as a team to determine the theme, colors and budget for the upcoming Caribbean Carnival Parade. As a masquerading band, we understand both the social and the historical aspects of the Caribbean Carnival. By uniting the different age groups in the formation of teams, we create a unique Carnival culture. Information is passed on to the younger generation through mentoring, teaching and by restoring the legends of the Caribbean Carnival back to the community at large. All this will allow for the culture of the Caribbean Carnival to foster, grow and maintain itself as the spectacular showcase that it is now. If you're a carnivalist that plays mas regularly, you've probably crossed paths with the Playmas platform at some point for costume registration. Rory Peters, their Sales and Operations Director, is one of the brains behind the scenes. Rory and I sat down virtually back in November '23 (I know, it's been a minute), but we recently met in Miami for an event we were both attending. This conversation was worth the wait, and we're happy to share it with you! Plus, who doesn't love a good UK accent? As a reminder, this season, we're all about peeling back the curtain and shining a spotlight on the folks and crews that make carnival magic happen. Rory shares his thoughts about the carnival scene, and of course educates us about Playmas, so buckle up and get ready to soak in the knowledge.P.s. since we recorded, Playmas has teamed up with AI Tix, another tech whiz crew. I was intrigued when I met their founder during my Miami escapades. I have a feeling that Mario will be gracing us with his presence on the podcast soon. Both AI Tix and Playmas are cooking up some seriously cool stuff to amp up our carnival game and keep us safe. Are you tired of feeling let down during the costume collection process? Well, you're certainly not alone. As a seasoned veteran of the carnival scene, I've had my fair share of disappointments over the years. But instead of dwelling on the negatives, I decided to turn those complaints into solutions for mas bands to implement. In the Fall of 2023, I reached out to my social media supporters and asked them to share their tips and suggestions to help mas bands improve their operations. And let me tell you, the response was overwhelming! So, in this episode, appropriately titled "Dear Mas Bands," I'm diving into the insights and advice provided by myself and my community. We're breaking these tips down into five key categories: planning, training, operations and logistics, communication, and accountability. In the world of mas production, the way you handle challenges can make or break your reputation. So, let's lead with empathy, communicate with clarity, and always strive for improvement. After all, it's the support of the carnival community that keeps us going. If there's a Mas band you'd like to shout out for excellent service and/or noteworthy operations management practices, please complete our anonymous Mas Band Appreciation Form. Historian Gérard Besson uncovers the colonial foundations of Caribbean cosmopolitanism, through the Magnificent Seven (Port of Spain), in Trinidad. Seven magnificent buildings, each unique in design and craftsmanship, overlook Trinidad's annual Caribbean Carnival along the Queen's Park Savannah. Amongst them, a Moorish-inspired Corsican manor, a Scottish castle, a New England country house, an Archbishop's Romanesque palace, and a French colonial complex stand side-by-side. Designed by European architects in the final days of the Trinidad Raj, and built with local materials and labour, the Magnificent Seven were yet the shared spoils of the island's new cocoa economy. Their extravagance visually reflects Trinidad as the most cosmopolitan – though undervoiced – experiment in British colonialism. PRESENTER: Gérard Besson, Trinidad-based historian, fiction writer, and author of the ‘Caribbean History Archives'. He is the Chairman and Publisher of Paria Publishing Company Limited, which has produced over 160 titles on the history and culture of Trinidad and Tobago. He holds a Lifetime Achiever Heritage Preservation Award from the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago, and an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies. ART: The Magnificent Seven (Port of Spain), Trinidad (c. 1902-1910). IMAGE: ‘Killarney (Stollmeyer's Castle)'. SOUNDS: Nick Barrett. PRODUCER: Jelena Sofronijevic. Jump Up!: Caribbean Carnival Music in New York City (Oxford University Press, 2019) is a comprehensive history of Trinidadian calypso and steelband music in the diaspora. Blending urban studies, oral history, archival research, and ethnography, Ray Allen examines how members of New York’s diverse Anglophile-Caribbean communities forged transnational identities through the self-conscious embrace, transformation, and hybridization of select Carnival music styles and performances. The book addresses the issues of music, migration, and identity, exploring the complex cycling of musical practices and the back-and-forth movement of singers, musicians, arrangers, producers, and cultural entrepreneurs between New York’s diasporic communities and the Caribbean. Dr. Ray Allen is professor of music at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center. Emily Ruth Allen (@emmyru91) is a PhD candidate in Musicology at Florida State University. Sparked by controversial comments made by social media personality WhiteChocolate758 claiming to, “pave the way for black people” in the Caribbean carnival influencer space, this episode dissects his opinions, but more importantly reflects on how cultural appropriation happens and its impact on the aesthetics of Caribbean culture to the masses. Using this example of the Caribbean Carnival experience we evaluate all the angles and dissect how his sentiments pose a threat to that valuation of Caribbean culture by outsiders riding current trends rather than respecting cultural traditions. This week's episode is all about Caribbean Carnival vibes, not on the islands south of the U.S. though, but actually right here in the Big Easy. New Orleans is known for many things. Being the northernmost Caribbean city, however, isn't widespread knowledge. Since Geronimo is a half-blooded Trinidadian and looks for any opportunity to be in the mix, we decided to bring in Joel Hitchcock Tilton + Trini Cindy - the minds behind the four-day long celebration known as NOLA Caribbean Experience. Geronimo talks with them about what inspired the festival (4:48), Caribbean culture spreading across the world (14:41), the actual NOLA Caribbean experience (24:41), what it takes to organize the festival each year (29:34), and Random Aside (42:52). Six years in and still going strong. If you're in New Orleans June 20th-24th, you should be there. #NecessaryListening Collins + Keys N°1 is Now Available.
