Brixton in south London was once regarded as the spiritual home of the Caribbean community. However, after waves of gentrification and regeneration, Richie set out to find out whether Brixton is still the home of Caribbean culture in Britain.Within a mile of the famous Brixton Market, Richie speaks with the owner of The Black Farmer brand, Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE, who recently opened his delicatessen and eatery on Brixton Row. Richie also speaks with Brian Danclair, who opened his first restaurant in Brixton before gentrification and now owns three establishments in the area. Richie visits two cultural projects, the Black Cultural Archives with Wanda Wyporska and Kimberley McIntosh, and Brixton House with Michelle McGrath and Monique Baptiste-Brown, to discover how they are helping to preserve the history and community that represent the Caribbean community today. We also look to the team behind the Luton Carnival 50 project, which is working collaboratively to conserve the legacy of Luton's Caribbean Carnival.Produced by Unedited for BBC Radio 1Xtra.

This week's episode blends reflection, rhythm, and real talk as the crew honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month while diving deep into what's shaping music, culture, and conversation right now. The show opens with a nod to survivors and advocates fighting breast cancer, followed by a spooky season spin—breaking down songs that sound innocent but have eerie undertones. From there, the team unpacks Rolling Stone's Top 250 Songs of the 21st Century, debating who was snubbed and who earned their spot. In music talk, they explore the growing EDM–Hip Hop crossover, the rise of Florida's rap scene, and a hot “what-if”: Would DJ Khaled still be a superstar if he only worked with local Florida artists? The conversation keeps flowing with dream Verzuz battles between Cash Money and No Limit, Shannon Sharpe's pivot to hip-hop interviews, and Mona's appearance on the Joe Budden Podcast. They also celebrate A'Ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces on their WNBA championship win and question whether artists' back-to-back touring schedules signal a recession-era hustle. Culturally, the hosts weigh in on whether Black Americans should attend Caribbean Carnival, the growing trend of creative directors overtaking actual designers, and the heartbreaking disappearance of Kada Scott, a 23-year-old woman from Philadelphia. Finally, the crew revisits the decline of mystery in fame, Ayesha Curry's viral podcast comments, and favorite homecoming moments from the past weekend — rounding out an episode that's equal parts awareness, analysis, and entertainment.

The Party Room Squad was founded in 1995 by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Montes Jr. The Party Room Squad's mission is to introduce, educate and promote the Caribbean Carnival to the younger generation in the neighborhood and to preserve the Caribbean Carnival's traditions that were slowly eluding our new adopted culture. The Party Room Squad assures that it emphasizes to its masqueraders the possibility of the global reach that can be obtained; that the historical roots are maintained; and a multiracial patrimony is developed to protect the Caribbean Carnival's standing in the community. While emphasizing the history of the Caribbean Carnival, the younger generation is exposed to the different views and cultural aspects that would be unavailable to them if not for their participation with The Party Room Squad. The younger generation is tasked to be creative and become the central focus of our current achievements. At the beginning of the Carnival season, some of the younger members of the Party Room Squad work as a team to determine the theme, colors and budget for the upcoming Caribbean Carnival Parade. As a masquerading band, we understand both the social and the historical aspects of the Caribbean Carnival. By uniting the different age groups in the formation of teams, we create a unique Carnival culture. Information is passed on to the younger generation through mentoring, teaching and by restoring the legends of the Caribbean Carnival back to the community at large. All this will allow for the culture of the Caribbean Carnival to foster, grow and maintain itself as the spectacular showcase that it is now. If you're a carnivalist that plays mas regularly, you've probably crossed paths with the Playmas platform at some point for costume registration. Rory Peters, their Sales and Operations Director, is one of the brains behind the scenes. Rory and I sat down virtually back in November '23 (I know, it's been a minute), but we recently met in Miami for an event we were both attending. This conversation was worth the wait, and we're happy to share it with you! Plus, who doesn't love a good UK accent? As a reminder, this season, we're all about peeling back the curtain and shining a spotlight on the folks and crews that make carnival magic happen. Rory shares his thoughts about the carnival scene, and of course educates us about Playmas, so buckle up and get ready to soak in the knowledge.P.s. since we recorded, Playmas has teamed up with AI Tix, another tech whiz crew. I was intrigued when I met their founder during my Miami escapades. I have a feeling that Mario will be gracing us with his presence on the podcast soon. Both AI Tix and Playmas are cooking up some seriously cool stuff to amp up our carnival game and keep us safe. Are you tired of feeling let down during the costume collection process? Well, you're certainly not alone. As a seasoned veteran of the carnival scene, I've had my fair share of disappointments over the years. But instead of dwelling on the negatives, I decided to turn those complaints into solutions for mas bands to implement. In the Fall of 2023, I reached out to my social media supporters and asked them to share their tips and suggestions to help mas bands improve their operations. And let me tell you, the response was overwhelming! So, in this episode, appropriately titled "Dear Mas Bands," I'm diving into the insights and advice provided by myself and my community. We're breaking these tips down into five key categories: planning, training, operations and logistics, communication, and accountability. In the world of mas production, the way you handle challenges can make or break your reputation. So, let's lead with empathy, communicate with clarity, and always strive for improvement. After all, it's the support of the carnival community that keeps us going. If there's a Mas band you'd like to shout out for excellent service and/or noteworthy operations management practices, please complete our anonymous Mas Band Appreciation Form.
