Richard Welsh, the Volunteer Fishing Bailiff at the Heath, says the new three year plan (currently with the Council) will build on the success they've had of improving water quality (especially algal growth) and bringing more wildlife; this year Kingfishers have returned, herons nested, warblers and grebe were seen for the first time. On Sunday 3 November they have volunteers help clear some willow growth. If you'd like to help, meet in the main car park at 8am and bring waders! Richard is also concerned about poaching and catapult crime that targets swans and geese. He spoke to Mike Waddington.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Few watery scenes are quite complete without birds in the picture. Ducks drifting across a country pond. Gulls wheeling in the sky above the beach, before they divebomb an unsuspecting tourist for their chips. Kingfishers flashing along a river, a bright dazzle of colour against the water. They're so much a part of the scenery that aquatic birds have had a long relationship with humans. In some cases, that link has been much more literal. For example, some believed drowned seamen became gulls, so capturing a gull and keeping it on a ship brought bad luck. But with a long relationship comes folklore. These birds predict the weather, foretell death, ward off intruders, or enjoy holy protection!  Let's find out more about the cormorant, curlew, duck, goose, kingfisher, and puffin in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Nadeem Perera is not your conventional image of a birdwatcher. In fact growing up in inner city London he was not raised as or encouraged to be a 'nature boy'. Now he can be seen on BBC 1 on the One Show talking about birds and has moved to Bristol to further his career in wildlife presenting. He takes Clare for a walk along the River Frome starting in Eastville Park. It's a grey Winter's day but they are overjoyed to be accompanied along the river by kingfishers lighting up the landscape. Along the way he talks about the project he runs called Flock Together and about his passion for combining young people of colour with the outdoors and nature. This episode dives into the wonderful world of Gerard Manley Hopkins, the musicality of his language, and the vision he has of becoming what we already are. This poem illustrates the cover of Abram Van Engen's new book, Word Made Fresh (https://a.co/d/ixArJjV). The book explores connections between poetry and faith, and it serves as an invitation to reading poetry of all kinds--with tools and tips for how to get started and explore broadly. Special thanks to John Hendrix (https://www.johnhendrix.com/) for the cover illustration of Word Made Fresh, which is an illustration of "As Kingfishers Catch Fire." Here is the poem by Hopkins: As Kingfishers Catch Fire As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame; As tumbled over rim in roundy wells Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell's Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name; Each mortal thing does one thing and the same: Deals out that being indoors each one dwells; Selves — goes itself; myself it speaks and spells, Crying Whát I dó is me: for that I came. I say móre: the just man justices; Keeps grace: thát keeps all his goings graces; Acts in God's eye what in God's eye he is — Chríst — for Christ plays in ten thousand places, Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his To the Father through the features of men's faces. See the poem at the Poetry Foundation. For more on Hopkins, see here (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/gerard-manley-hopkins). The last chapter of Word Made Fresh (https://a.co/d/626hzDG) dwells at length on this poem by Hopkins as an expression of what poetry does and can do in the world.

Kingfishers are incredible fliers, divers, and of course fishers. A lamp mussel at first blush seem to present all of the complex behaviors .... of a rock. But there is far more fascinating biology happening than meets the eye. This episode documents the interactions between at least one individual each of these two species. Life is interesting, strange, and there is unimaginable complexity if we care to investigate even just a little bit. This essay and now podcast was inspired by a photograph posted on social media. Here's a link to Adelaide Tyrol Murphy's incredible art to go with the story. And the story I presented at a conference a while back inspired Chris Maynard to create more incredible art linked here. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 26, 2022 is: halcyon • HAL-see-un • adjective Halcyon is most often used to describe a happy and successful time in the past that is remembered as being better than today. It can also mean “calm, peaceful” or “prosperous, affluent.” // She's relieved to be retired, but looks back fondly on the halcyon years of her career. See the entry > Examples: “I started the trip in Reno, a classic American city whose halcyon days may be behind it but which most will find engaging for both its faded glory and current fight to renew itself.” — William O'Connor, The Daily Beast, 26 Sept. 2022 Did you know? Halcyon has drifted along contentedly in English for centuries, but it hatched from a tumultuous story. According to Greek mythology, Alkyone, the daughter of the god of the winds, became so distraught over her husband Ceyx's death at sea that she threw herself into the ocean to join him. The gods were moved by the couple's love, and took pity on them by turning them into halcyon birds, a bird identified with the kingfisher. (Kingfishers are known for plunging into water after prey.) According to the legend, the birds built their nests on the sea, which so charmed Alkyone's father that he created a period of unusual calm that lasted until the birds' eggs hatched. Our word halcyon reflects the story in multiple ways. When halcyon was first used in English in the 14th century it was as a noun referring to the mythical bird, and later to actual kingfishers as well. Adjective use developed in the 16th century and now most often evokes those calm waters—the word typically describes an idyllic time in the past.

In North America, kingfishers fish. But in tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia, most of the roughly 90 species of kingfishers don't “fish.” They hunt in woodlands, where the smaller ones, like the four-inch Pygmy Kingfisher, eat grasshoppers and centipedes. Larger kingfishers will take frogs, reptiles, small mammals, and even snakes. This Pied Kingfisher, found in Africa and Asia, does eat fish.Did you know that Australia's Laughing Kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher family? It has been known to dispatch snakes up to three feet in length. More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. He talks about his style of angling and his opinions on rigs and bait and where he feels his strengths are.Pete has an incredible mind, and he shares how his insomnia coupled with his constantly idea filled brain have led him to develop and create amazing innovative products over the years, a lot of which he hasn't received the credit for. He is incredibly gifted and a constant source of information which goes a long way into explaining how he can have such great results in his angling fishing short concentrated sessions as well as fishing longer session on big European waters. On the theme of Europe Pete talks about his foreign fishing including recent personal bests from Parco Del Brenta and his guided trips on the venue. He also shares his unique stance in not having any sponsors and his choice to concentrate on craving his own path and helping other anglers with his film and photography weekend courses. Finally, Pete talks about his amazing experience working in the industry for the likes of Korda, Free Spirit and Dynamite to name but a few. He talks about his TV career featuring on Matt Hayes Total Fishing and him winning “Kingfishers” a series which is still available to view to this very day.Pete is incredibly unique, down to earth and talented. This podcast jumps everywhere and is so varied it a real testament into how Pete has followed his passion and talent and forged his own path in the industry, a truly fascinating bloke.

BPC - Episode 117 - Jockey Box Hero Part Hung We had the utmost pleasure covering Indiana On Tap’s inaugural Jockey Box Hero at The Hatch in Broad Ripple a few weeks ago.   It was the perfect day for craft beer and karaoke…behind a live band!   A special occasion is certain way as our very own Cowboy got to perform against some talented Indy folk and the one and only William Hung.   We enjoyed talks with old friends from The Moontown Brewing Company, Mackenzie from The Roundtown Brewery, Nikki Reed and Carter, and our new friends at 99.5 WZPL, Toni Dekeyser and Dave Smiley of the Smiley Morning Show we all know and love.  The WZPL folks got very comfortable speaking their minds with the Pigs… and we enjoyed every minute of it.  We get some dirty secrets about Nikki as well as some awful driving tips from Dave.   And of course we had to have American Idol’s, Mr. William Hung hang out (no pun intended) with the boys for a round as well as some jeering from Cowboy.  Hung is Mr. Infotainment!   You won’t want to miss Part Hung of Jockey Box and we better see all of you there next summer! Cheers!! A special thanks to the fantastic Cyrus Youngman of Cyrus Youngman and the Kingfishers for the opening and closing tunes for this episode.  And stay tuned for an upcoming show with this rare Indy talent we can’t wait to join us for a few brews and to talk about life and music.  Shout out in this episode include:  Four Day Ray Brewing;  Jonathon Mullens and Broad Ripple Brew Pub;  Metazoa Brewing Company (who will join us for Part Two);  The Bier Brewery; Redemption Alewerks; and The Indiana Whiskey Company
