How do the biology and behavior of individual trees benefit from the unique access that living collections provide to researchers? Joining us to answer this question and discuss the intriguing topic of Ecological Evolution is Dr. Chuck Cannon, a Senior Scientist at The Morton Arboretum… With years of experience as a researcher, Dr. Cannon brings extensive knowledge and a wide-ranging perspective on forest evolution, wildlife, and conservation to the Arboretum. Presently, he focuses his work on the resilience and adaptability of tree species and new technology surrounding tree biology. How are Dr. Cannon's studies contributing to The Morton Arboretum and plant biology in general? Click play now to find out for yourself! In this episode, we cover: When individual trees become a forest. How trees integrate above and below-ground conditions. How big the “living layer” of tree rings is. How trees react to draughts. In this episode, we discuss the biology and the individual behavior of trees with Dr. Chuck Cannon, a Senior Scientist in Ecological Evolution at The Morton Arboretum. As an expert in forest evolution, wildlife, and conservation, Dr. Cannon brings a unique set of skills and knowledge to the Arboretum. Currently, his work focuses on two primary research questions: How can we ensure that tree species maintain resilience and adaptability in rapidly changing, human-dominated environments, and how do naturally occurring hybridization and genetic exchange among interfertile species contribute to this process? Can new technologies provide novel insights into tree biology, and how can the application of innovative tools and techniques overcome the challenges of studying trees? In addition to diving into these questions, we explore: How Dr. Cannon's work shifted from primate research to the biology of trees. How a forest is defined, and how this environment is created. The ways that trees can indicate environmental quality. What we can learn from trees. The biggest threats that trees face. Want to learn more about Dr. Cannon and his fascinating work with trees? Rainforests are complex ecosystems that house over half of the world's species, but they're under threat from deforestation and climate change, and gathering data about the shifts in populations is difficult and unreliable. But AI could help. Reset hears from the Morton Arboretum's Chuck Cannon, and Loyola University's Karen Weigert on efforts to build accessible tools that can be used to monitor the species that call rainforests home. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
For trees, living for hundreds or even thousands of years is akin to winning the lottery. So many things can go wrong between germination and living long enough to be considered ancient. My guest today is Dr. Chuck Cannon of The Morton Arboretum and he wanted to know what those odds really looked like. Using forest modelling, he and his colleagues now have a better idea of just how special ancient trees truly are and why they are so important at all scales from individual to species to entire ecosystems. Today's Guest: Shawn Mullins, singer, songwriter, "My Stupid Heart," "Lullabye" Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Shawn Mullins by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of Shawn Mullins fans who don’t think there is anything wrong with the man’s heart… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! If you’re looking for a troubadour whose songs of love and the road might speak to your heart, you’ve come to the right place today. My guest, Shawn Mullins, has just released a new album full of longing and places, some with a little of both. And if you don’t know his work, I wonder if you’ll hear the influences that I do, ranging from the mirth and joy of George Harrison and Warren Zevon to the intensity and message of Bob Dylan and a little of Michael Franks’ romantic spice? Or I could be way, way off. That’s why I’m going to talk to the man in just a moment. SHAWN MULLINS podcast excerpt: "'My Stupid Heart' is about the way I felt after a third marriage didn't work out... I felt unsuccessful as a human being in that I couldn't find a partner, although I've had wonderful relationships with all three of my wives. And I'm still close friends with two of three of them and I miss the other one." You can LISTEN to this interview with singer-songwriter SHAWN MULLINS, whose latest album is MY STUPID HEART, by clicking the audio player above! My Stupid Heart is Mullins’ 16th release and it’s packed full of songs such as the title tune and “It All Comes Down to Love” and “Pre-Apocalyptic Blues” – songs that you’ll be singing or humming along with by the second play. And, of course, there is the more serious plaint of “Ferguson,” which reflects the agony of the Missouri city. SHAWN MULLINS podcast excerpt: "When it comes to police brutality, obviously nobody wants that. I've known a lot of police officers over the years... I think it's a very small percentage (doing bad things), but it's getting a lot of attention. The fact that it's happening and that people can be profiled and it leads to violent situations just because of the color of someone's skin is pretty screwed up. That song, 'Ferguson,' is about the whole picture. A lot of people said, 'Don't name it that,' but that made us want to do it even more." Mullins is on tour through at least the end of spring, including a four-day birthday bash appearance in Duluth, Georgia, in early March and participation in the Safety Harbor SongFest on April 3rd right here in the Tampa Bay, Florida, area. Today, he performs two songs live for us: “The Great Unknown” and “Pre-Apocalyptic Blues.” Key interview moments: • 5:50 Shawn Mullins talks about how police brutality and racial profiling moved him to write his new song, "Ferguson"; • 23:45 After his third marriage fell apart, Mullins explains how he took a six-year hiatus from the road -- and relationships; • 43:45 Mullins tells how he met his writing partner Chuck Cannon, who then introduced him to his wife, actress and country music singer Lari White, who produced "My Stupid Heart."
