The 1990s saw a host of new rock ‘n' roll and adult-oriented roots come to the forefront on the American music scene. There was an understated, long-haired kid from Georgia in the mix with bands like the Black Crowes, Wilco, Sheryl Crow and the Counting Crows.  His name was Shawn Mullins and his brooding, lyrically-thoughtful style stood out, harkening back to the likes of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. He exploded out of the gates with the album Soul's Core and it left a mark with the Grammy-nominated song “Lullaby” and the hit “Shimmer”—which became an anthem for Australia as part of its promotional campaign during the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. His career has only grown since, with songs like “All in My Head,” which was featured on the hit television sitcom Scrubs and his huge hit “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006's 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor record. We discuss his career and more as Shawn celebrates the 20th anniversary of Soul's Core by recording two new versions of the album, dubbed Soul's Core Revival. The songs are not a remix or a remaster of the original, rather, brand-new recordings with new arrangements of the songs. One album will be new stripped down solo performances – some on guitar, some on piano, and one a cappella – and the second will be a new studio recording with his full band, Soul Carnival. Enjoy the latest episode of The Load Out music podcast with the great Shawn Mullins.

The manager of Magnolia Estates of Winder Assisted Living Center, who was recently elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, is accused of stealing medications from the assisted living home. The Barrow County Sheriff's Office said Danny Rampey, 67, of Statham, was arrested on Thursday and charged with unauthorized distribution or possession of a controlled substance, burglary and exploitation and intimidation of disabled adults, elderly persons and residents The Sheriff's Office said investigators received reports over the past two weeks of Magnolia Estates of Winder residents missing medication and "initiated an investigation into the allegations" and used surveillance operations to assist in the collection of evidence. According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies arrested Rampey on Dec. 15 as he was leaving an unoccupied residence of the assisting living home. More charges could be filed as the investigation continues, the Sheriff's Office said. The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information regarding this case to contact the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Unit at 770-307-3080 ext. 3083. Rampey ran unopposed for the District 119 seat in the general election after winning the Republican primary and is taking over the District 119 seat. Gwinnett police said a man was found dead near the entrance of his home in a Norcross area neighborhood Thursday night. Officers were called to the home on Stanfield Court in unincorporated Norcross around 7 p.m. on a report that a person had been shot. They discovered the 23-year-old man dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers, which lets tipsters remain anonymous, at 404-577-8477. They can also visit www.stopcrimeATL.com. Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment.   Gwinnett County Public Schools employees will get extra money just in time for Christmas. The county's school board approved one-time $1,000 payments. GCPS Superintendent Calvin Watts said all benefits-eligible employees of the district who were employed as of Dec. 1 will receive a payment. The payments will be included as a lump sum on employees paychecks that will be issued on Dec. 21. Funding for the payments comes from the Elementary Secondary School Emergency Relief, or ESSER, federal funding package, according to Watts.   Duluth's Purple Team won the Georgia High School Association eSports state championship in League of Legends on Wednesday. It is the third eSports state title for a Gwinnett County Public Schools program after Brookwood won Super Smash Bros and North Gwinnett won League of Legends in the spring 2022 season. The Wildcats, runner-up in the spring season, defeated Northview 2-0 in the finals with the team of Corey Chen, Paul Shim, Phillip Chao, Brian Do and Kristian Napire. Other members of the Duluth eSports team are Yeong Lee, Tara Tu, Charles Deng, Cotrell Cooper, Wilson Nguyen, Ian Beltran, Michael Soto and Joseph de Lima.   The modern history of the Atlanta music scene cannot be written without devoting a full chapter to Michelle Malone. With her smoking six-string, Malone has been blazing melodic trails for parts of five decades with her blend of rock, blues and Americana, and her collaborators include the likes of Drivin' n' Cryin', Caroline Aiken, Indigo Girls and Shawn Mullins, among many others. But every year when December rolls around, Malone assumes a slightly different persona as she morphs into the guitar-wielding chanteuse leading Michelle Malone and the Hot Toddies, performing your favorite Christmas songs with a twangy, jazzy vibe. The Hot Toddies — with their latest album release “Toddie Time” — will visit the Aurora Theatre at the Lawrenceville Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Malone said that she started hosting holiday-centric shows in 2017, due to Christmas residing so near and dear to her heart. The holiday shows are not only a treat to pull off, but they also allow Mallone a brief respite from her usual performance style. She's also adamant that the songs performed will evoke memories a of certain time period in American history, complete with tunes made famous by Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Rosemary Clooney and Brenda Lee. Gwinnett County resident Kaitlyn Sanchez was 10 years old when she first attended a Cops and Kids Christmas event. Now, 14 years later, she's back with her 10-month old son, Gianni. Cops and Kids Christmas is an annual event hosted by the Gwinnett Fraternal Order of Police and is meant to spread good will and holiday spirit to families in need. Thursday night's shopping spree marked the 33rd year of the event and took place at the Lawrenceville Walmart Supercenter. Upon sign-in, each family is paired with local law enforcement officers who accompany them as they browse and select gift options. Some, like Capt. Audrey Henderson with the Lawrenceville Police Department, have participated for 10 years or more. Henderson, who shopped with a young girl named Gabby and her family, stated her favorite part of the event was watching the children's faces light up. Event organizer Connie Chesser stated that this year they identified and approved 132 children, approximately 64 families, to participate in the event. In order to qualify, families must be residents of Gwinnett County and the children must receive Medicaid benefits. Families with children ages 3 through 15 had $150 to spend and newborns through age 2 had $75. Snacks and holiday treats as well as boxed dinners were also provided.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seth and Marc field a request for a song that resides deep in the depths of Marc's hate bin. Lullaby; the song that Shawn Mullins is so enamored with, he laughs at his own lyrics. Listen to Beck-lite pull an opposite of Hey Jude and take a better song and make it sad. Good luck sleeping after hearing Ol' Man Mullins talk like a sketchy heroin dealer trying to "lull" your 9 year old daughter.

Kindred spirits and newly found friends, Joey Sommerville (also known as Papa J, trumpeter extraordinaire) and Peter Stroud (legendary guitarist) sit down with Tom. Each artist offers their perspective on creativity, mortality, and friendship —all the while celebrating the power of music to heal and augment the human experience. Hear Peter's uncanny connections to getting the gigs with Pete Droge, Sheryl Crow, and Don Henley and listen to the lyrics inspired by a parting friend, Ike Stubblefield, in Joey's developing new single, See You on the Other Side. Peter Stroud is Sheryl Crow's guitarist of 22 years and serves as her Music Director. He has also toured or recorded with Don Henley, Sarah McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, Shawn Mullins, Pete Droge, and founded his own band, Big Hat. Outside of performance, Peter is a co-founding partner with Artistory, a company offering deep-dive metrics data for the music industry and fan engagement through social media. He formerly co-founded 65amps, a manufacturer of high-end “boutique” guitar amplifiers. Papa J has solidified his place in music history, transforming his sound and genre over the years. An iconic contemporary jazz trumpet player, Joey was hearing another kind of music in his head, a “New Sound” informed by years of performing with blues legends and jam band superstars, including BB King protégé Big Joe Burrell and mega band Phish. Papa J has collaborated with celebrated artists, including Earl Klugh, Marion Meadows, Jeff Bradshaw, Bob Baldwin and he has four solo albums. Joey is an active community servant, including serving on the Board of Directors of the How Big is Your Dream Foundation, an Atlanta based charity that provides music education programs to students in underserved communities. When Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins & Pete Droge (aka The Thorns) recorded "No Blue Sky" almost in 2002, they had no idea that the skies over the Western US would be thick with smoke, or that a global pandemic would isolate us in our homes. "It ain't right, it feels like forever..." pretty much sums up the year 2020. I'm fascinated in how songs can find new relevance years later. Grammy Nominated Shawn Mullins will be performing at The Mansfield Playhouse on April 3rd, 2020. Doors open at 6:30pm, with music starting at 7:30pm. Tickets are on sale now for $25.00 reserved seating.    One of America's great troubadours, Mullins brings his signature voice and his polished singer-songwriter style to Downtown Mansfield for the first time for "An Evening with Shawn Mullins". This show will allow music lovers to see Shawn at his best - manning the stage alone in the intimate setting of the Playhouse. This show is ideal for those who enjoy acoustic music and story telling.    After a series of indie record releases, Shawn Mullins' critical breakthrough came when 1998's Soul Core album shot him to fame on the strength of its Grammy-nominated No.1 hit, “Lullaby.” His song “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson's Creek Soundtrack. For its 20th anniversary, Mullins revisited the music on Soul Core, recording two new versions of the album, entitled Soul's Core Revival, which features brand new arrangements of some of his most popular songs.

Music fans have seen and heard him on stage for years with Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris and others. He's the guy with the pork pie hat (which the evidence will show he was wearing before it was a fad) playing the organ and the accordion. He's also a successful producer and songwriter. His story is fascinating. His journey of faith is personal and challenging. And he's one of Nashville's deep thinkers and understated musical heroes. Phil Madeira is my guest. Madeira grew up in Barrington, Rhode Island in a religious family. His father was a Baptist minister - albeit a moderate one he says. In his 2011 memoir God On The Rocks, Distilling Religion, Savoring Faith, Phil says he was obsessed from an early age with the blues and gospel music of the deep south. He played drums, then guitar and keyboards, and his first working band was several years on the road with Christian rocker and guitar player Phil Keaggy. In Nashville, where he's lived for more than thirty years, Madeira migrated from Christian music to Americana, sometimes in tandem with his friends and collaborators Buddy and Julie Miller. Madeira's songs have been recorded by Alison Krauss, Garth Brooks and Bruce Hornsby among many others. His highest profile achievement to date however may have been producing the 2011 anthology Mercyland: Hymns for the Rest of Us. The project included contributions from a multitude of top tier artists. Emmylou Harris, Shawn Mullins, Dan Tyminski and others took on the producer's challenge to write about God as Love and nothing more. It was hailed by critics, spawned a remarkable live event at the 2012 Americana convention in Nashville and ultimately inspired a second volume in 2016. Also this hour, a conversation with John Lomax III of Nashville, grandson of John Avery Lomax, one of America's foremost folklorists and song hunters. On the occasion of a new release of a cappella songs by John's father called FOLK, we talk about stewardship of a huge music legacy.

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Shawn Mullins has been thinking a lot about love. Jenn Cristy and I chat about what she learned from touring and recording with John Mellencamp, building a successful music career in the Midwest, and starting 1Pulse Entertainment. Now on her fifth album, Jenn began her career with John Mellencamp, meeting the Hoosier rocker in Bloomington, Indiana, where she was in the midst of an all-American swimming career at Indiana University. During her stint with Mellencamp's band she proved her versatility, playing flute, piano, percussion, organ, and violin in addition to singing. When she embarked on her solo career in 2003, she wanted to create a sound that both honored all of her varied influences – from Ben Folds to Pink and Bruce Hornsby to Queen – while creating something decidedly original. It is clear that her music has found a hungry audience. Cristy has played around the country, sharing the stage with a veritable who's-who of artists – Shawn Mullins, John Eddie, Antigone Rising, Indigenous, Bree Sharp, Jeffery Gaines, Danielia Cotton and Michael Gabliki (Rusted Root) –or dominating it herself. Her songs have earned praise everywhere from blogs and small-town newspapers to The New York Times. The piano-driven rock is a platform for lyrics that encompass everything from matters of the heart to politics to straight-ahead fun…or murder. In Cristy's world, every story has a melody.
