You can text us here!Good guy or bad guy? The answer is yes. Roy Bean was a larger than life character that should have been every bit as famous as the likes of Jesse James and Billy The Kid. If he saw a chance to make a dollar, he took it, and to ensure nobody got in his way, he made their lives a misery at the same time. An unorthodox Judge, Saloon keeper and trader, he left a legacy that is still legend today.Support the showwww.strangestuffpodcast.comwww.patreon/strangestuffpodcast#strangestuffpodcast - InstagramStrange Stuff Podcast - YouTubeWe source our material from various web resources, and claim no credit for any original research, as we are too damn lazy/busy to actually carry it out. I'm actually just getting home from Boone's Saloon where I got to play with these two for the first time, while Greg from Episode 48 hosted. They are the perfect combination of hilarious and interesting, and if they never do a podcast of their own, we are going to miss out on a lot of great stories. I will keep the pressure on. In this game, Sam was looking for Anatomy & Physiology, 2010s Pop Culture, and The Sopranos. Vicky was in search of questions on Zoology, Movies, and King of the Hill. This won't be the last you hear from them on here either.Be sure to check all the links at the Linktree: https://linktr.ee/TriviaWorkshop

Send us a textA single mechanical failure changed the course of Western history on a hot July night in 1870. When Medal of Honor recipient Private John Kile pressed his Army Remington against Wild Bill Hickok's head and pulled the trigger, the hammer fell with a dull click instead of a fatal blast. That misfire in Paddy Welch's Saloon set off a desperate struggle that would leave Kiley dead, his companion wounded, and add another chapter to Hickok's growing legend.Hays City in 1870 stood at a crossroads, transforming from a chaotic railroad terminus into a fledgling settlement while still harboring the volatile energy of the untamed frontier. Into this powder keg came three men whose collision course was perhaps inevitable: Wild Bill Hickok, no longer sheriff but still carrying his deadly reputation; Private John Kile, whose Medal of Honor couldn't outshine his troubled past marked by desertion and discipline problems; and Private Jeremiah "Jerry" Lonergan, renowned for his formidable fighting prowess.Their confrontation erupted with stunning violence. Lonergan trapped Hickok in a powerful bear hug while Kile pressed his revolver to Hickok's head. When the gun misfired, Hickok managed to draw his own weapons despite being restrained, shooting Kiley fatally and wounding Lonergan before making a dramatic escape through a glass window. He fled to Boot Hill Cemetery with a Winchester rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition, leaving town the next day while authorities—both military and civilian—declined to press charges against him. This authenticated incident, documented in military records yet largely overlooked in popular history, reveals the razor-thin margins between life and death on the frontier and how practical considerations often outweighed strict legal procedure. Join us as we uncover this forgotten chapter in Western history, where a single mechanical failure altered destinies and added another extraordinary tale to the Wild Bill Hickok legend.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included. By Davy Crockett In 1889, "Old Sport" Peter Napoleon Campana (1836-1905) returned home to Bridgeport, Connecticut, after his four-month trip to California. His celebrity status had increased because of news stories across the country about how he beat up the unscrupulous race manager, Frank W. Hall (1860-1923). During his ten-year ultrarunning career thus far, he had competed in at least 42 races, including 24 six-day races. As he did each summer, Campana took time away from racing, but frequently made appearances at local sporting events, including foot races. New book! Old Sport Campana: Ultrarunning's Most Popular and Amusing 19th Century Runner. As I researched for these podcast episodes, I realized that I had enough content for an entire amusing and interesting book. This episode previews chapter eight of the book. To read the entire story of Old Sport, get my new book on Amazon. In July 1889, a policeman, George A. Parker (1853-1926), took a bet to walk from Hartford, Connecticut to New Haven, Connecticut and back, 72 miles in 26 hours. He walked with a young man, Fred Robertson. They finished at Dwight Mitchell's Saloon in 24.5 hours. “There was quite a crowd in the saloon awaiting the coming of the pedestrians. Conspicuous among them, both on account of his appearance and his senile garrulity, was Old Sport Campana. This old, broken-down warhorse wanted to bet he could cover the distance in sixteen hours. Then he took several turns up and down the long room to show his skill as a pedestrian.” He found no takers of his bet. Parker and Robertson received quite an ovation. Campana published a boxing challenge to the world. “I, Napoleon Campana, alias Old Sport, hereby challenge any man in the world 61 years of age, to fight to a finish, London prize ring rules, for the sum of $500 a side. If this challenge is not accepted, I claim for myself the title of champion of the world.” No one took up the wager, so he must have become the champion boxer of the world. He next issued a challenge to race any man over 60 years in a 100-mile race. Campana was actually 52 years old. It would not have been a fair race. It September 1889, Campana announced that he was in training for his “farewell race in America,” a six-day twelve-hours-per-day race to be held at the Polo Rink in New Haven, Connecticut. Would it really be the last race of his career? He was asked how he made a living. He replied, “I don't work for a living young feller.” He demanded $250 from the race manager, James L. Meenan, to start in the race but was refused. He left the rink in disgust. Alfred Elson Campana returned later as a spectator and sent a gift to his Connecticut rival, Alfred Elson (1836-1900), who was in the race and was the same age as Campana. It was a cabbage with $5 rolled inside it. “Elson declined to carry the cabbage around the rink, so Sport stuck it on the end of a board and dogged him around the track, holding the cabbage over Elson's head.” The Street Peddler In October 1889, Campana was hired to sell peanuts at the Danbury, Connecticut Far by Orin L. Bronson (1827-1909). Sales went very well. Bronson claimed that Campana skipped out of town with all the money and intended to have him arrested if he could find him. Campana went to Winstead, Connecticut, where he competed in a five-hour race and came in third with 19 miles. In December 1889, he was seen watching a ten-mile walking race in New Haven. Campana was a sly businessman where the saying “buyer beware,” really meant something. In early January 1890, he dropped into a Bridgeport saloon and exhibited his fruit. He made a sale for 50 lemons. “While he counted the fruit and placed it in a basket belonging to the purchaser, the old man kept up a rambling talk about his races in the past. He kept his tongue moving at a lively rate until he had counted out 50 lemons. He then received his money with a smile and a ‘God bless you, mister,
Bank robbers prefer sport sedans: all the speed of a supercar with seating for all their accomplices — and trunk space for their loot. And the fast sedan was born with the Jaguar sedan powered by a Le Mans-winning-engine. In the 1950s, Jaguar was on a Le Mans winning streak with its MK120-C and D-Type race cars. But why let the sports cars have all the fun? In 1955 Jaguar introduced the 2.4 Saloon (aka the Mark 1), and a handful of months later plopped their Le Mans-winning 210 hp 3.4L straight-6 engine into the chassis to create the 3.4 Saloon. Equipped with race-spec 4-wheel discs and double-wishbone front suspension it outran everything (including the police), and is arguably the world's first sports sedan. In this episode we'll cover the elegantly menacing Jaguar 3.4 Saloon or “Mark 1”. Starting with how to properly pronounce Jagyoowuhr. Or is it Jagwire? Depends. We'll cover the marque's origins – from Sir William Lyons' Swallow Sidecar Company, to early sports cars like the XK120 and the Le Mans winning streak of the 1950s with the C-Type and D-Type. The 2.4L straight-6, followed by the monster 3.4, then 3.8, and even 4.2 which was used all the way up until the mid-1980s in the XJ6 and even early 90s in the Daimler DS420. The 3.4 Saloon employed 4-wheel disc brakes, double wishbone front suspension, a cantilevered rear leaf spring, and panhard rod. Early cars had centrally-mounted gauges, and the chassis was Jaguar's first to use unitary construction. Sadly, galvanization wouldn't take off for another two decades, starting at Porsche. And while the unibody proved stronger than anticipated, it wasn't strong enough to protect racer Mike Hawthorne when he fatally crashed his Mark 1 while passing a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing in England in 1959. The Mark 1 comes from a bygone era of race cars where Le Mans-winning engines (and entire vehicles) would find their way into dealer showrooms effectively unchanged. With few exceptions since (notably the McLaren F1 – which, incredibly, went the reverse direction from streetcar to dominant race car). The last of the breed may have been the Mark III Ford GT40, as things escalated dramatically with the arrival of the Porsche 917. Luckily for us poors, plenty of lower level racing exists, and we got a handful of other homologation specials to choose from in the form of the BMW E30 M3, Mercedes-Benz 190 2.3-16, Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, and Rover SD1, to name a few. Cars like the Alfa Giulietta Ti sedan give the Jag a challenge for the original sports sedan mantle, but the Italian wasn't first. In today's world, the Jag was a performance-per-dollar bargain akin to a Tesla Model 3. Or possibly a Dodge Charger Hellcat. In any case, today's quintessential sports sedan, the M3, has gotten far too pricey to be considered a bargain. As Derek points out, if you're a thrifty enthusiast, skip the G80 and E30 and get yourself a nice used E36 or E46. No matter what you buy, budget for fixing it (especially if it's a Land Rover). And always, always get a silly license plate. Just maybe one that doesn't tempt fate like Jason's friend's NEED AAA plate. Because, umm, he did. Immediately. It is a privilege to welcome actor Matt DeAngelis as a guest for a special edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Matt grew up on showtunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theatre at the University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Route 95 to NYC in 2004. In June 2009, Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of HAIR with Tony Award winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production “Across the Atlantic Sea” to The West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the first national US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR.Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the 1st National tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt's cross-country adventures continued in 2014 with the first national tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and five instruments. Over the last five years, Matt has been a veteran of almost 2,000 performances. Thankfully, Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he starred opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and seven-time Grammy nominee, and the show's composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theatre Company, directed by TONY winner Sam Gold. He also appeared in Orpheus Descending at Theatre for a New Audience.Matt DeAngelis made many performance appearances on television with these multiple shows, including Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Matt is also seen on Person of Interest, Madam Secretary, Marvel's Daredevil, EVIL, For Life, Chicago PD, FBI, and Waitress starring Sara Bareilles. Matt lives with his beautiful wife, fellow performer (and Bostonian) Christine Dwyer, and their Boston Terrier “Chowdah". Matt and Christine also co-own THE WORKING STUDIO, a music theatre and acting studio dedicated to unlocking people's potential and embracing individuality in the audition process. They have also launched a successful master class series, UPGRADE YOUR AUDITION, with other top industry professionals to demystify the auditioning and booking process. Matt DeAngelis also started the Saloon Sessions. The once-a-month jam session features Matt and his cast members from Swept Away as they perform a combination of Broadway, folk music, and pop tunes. DeAngelis has brought together an impressive group of performers in honor of his mother and the countless others affected by the disease. The series serves as a celebration of his mother, Janice, who passed away in 2022 from metastatic breast cancer. Janice's love of theater and music and raises money for the millions of people affected by breast and other types of cancer. The show also welcomes special guests. For their upcoming March 16 show, Tony-nominated actor Tony Yazbeck (On The Town), Emma Pittman (The Outsiders and Back to the Future), and Stephanie Torns (Waitress and Wicked) will join the festivities at Hurley's Saloon in New York City. Proceeds from the show will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. On this special episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt DeAngelis spoke about performing in Hair, Swept Away, and Waitress. Hear about travel to Duluth, Minnesota as the Amateur Traveler talks to travel photographer Autumn Carolynn about this city on Lake Superior that has captured her heart. Why should you go to Duluth? Autumn says, "There are so many reasons why Duluth to me is a place that someone can go and feel like they are at home, I feel like it is just so unbelievably beautiful, but it's also a place where you feel at peace and you feel calm. So it is one of the top places in my mind. I had this goal to go to 30 countries before I turned 30 and out of all the places that I've been to, Duluth is still my number one, which some people think is weird, but to me it just is." Summer Itinerary (Warm-Weather Activities & Scenic North Shore Drive) This itinerary focuses on outdoor activities, hiking, and exploring the North Shore of Lake Superior. Start in Duluth: Visit the Aerial Lift Bridge (watch ships pass under it, listen for the Captain's Salute). Walk around Canal Park, shop at Duluth Pack, and eat at Grandma's Saloon (wild rice burger & chicken wild rice soup). Stop by Canal Park Brewing Company (try "Loon Juice" cider). ... https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-duluth-minnesota/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. Leslie was an architect by training and trade and knew his way around a set of drawings. He was a smart man, a detailed planner, and turned into a highly successful bank robber. Ocean National Bank was his first robbery. It took over three months to plan and his financier Fredericka “Marm” Mandelbaum invested $3,000 in the planning which yielded over $750,000 in return. The heist had a three day set up that included drilling from the basement to the vault, using a gadget called a “little joker” to capture the safe's combination, and returning on Sunday night, when the safe was most full, to make the extraction. According to Wikipedia, The police captain put on the case noticed that Leslie had withdrawn money but since Leslie was known as a educated architect, he did not make the connection. Honda introduced its 0 Series electric vehicles—the Honda 0 SUV and Honda 0 Saloon prototypes—at CES, and our guest co-host for the week, Matt DeLorenzo was on hand to report on them. Set for production in 2026 at its Ohio EV Hub, these “shockingly” styled models showcase innovative features like Honda's ASIMO OS, the company's custom operating system offering personalized mobility and “seamless” over-the-air updates. As DeLorenzo reports in this episode, the new production vehicles' peas-in-a-pod" styling is attention-getting, to say the least. Embracing a "Thin, Light, and Wise" design theme, they deliver spacious, flexible interiors, advanced digital experiences, and expected Level 3 automated driving. Both concepts use a “system-on-chip” (SoC) developed in partnership with Renesas Electronics to unify vehicle systems, and they also feature steer-by-wire technology and ultra-personalized driving modes. We'll have more details in this episode. This week's special guest is Paul Tyll, Director of Dodge Products — Musclecar. Host Jack had a chance to sit down for an in-depth interview with him during the recent introductory drive event for the all-new Dodge Charger Daytona. He knows more about that car than just about anyone, so tune in for that. In this week's road tests, DeLorenzo takes a long look at the Kia Sorento crossover SUV based on a road trip in the vehicle in and around Chicago. Halfway across the country, Nerad puts the appealing Mazda CX-50 small crossover through its paces on the pre-fire roads of Southern California. Each will have a full report on their respective test vehicle in this week's show. In the news, General Motors' head of design, Michael Simcoe, is retiring after 42 years at the company. We'll discuss his legacy and what his departure might signal for the future of automotive design. In the international intrigue department, it looks like Ford Motor Company might be at odds with the U.S. Department of Defense over its deal with a Chinese battery maker, and we'll give you more on that. BMW has also unveiled a radical new infotainment scheme that it will install in many of its upcoming vehicles, so we'll tell you all about that. Listener Question of the Week Listener Asa from Oregon asks if we will ever see the battery breakthrough that experts keep talking about. Our experts will have an answer. “If you walk up and down Main Street and go into an art gallery, or a retail shop, or a restaurant that's been here for years, you're gonna get a, ‘Welcome y'all. How's it going?' And you're going to get a sense of who that person is and what that place really is. There are ways to be luxurious and boutique without being stuffy and pretentious, because the Hill Country is simply not any of those things.” We're in great company with Mike Bolick, the General Manager of the Albert Hotel, a tranquil Texas Hill Country resort that is lovingly restored and set to officially open in January 2025, blending historical charm with modern luxury, tucked just off of Fredericksburg's bustling Main Street. There is much talk about town and excitement in the air as this historic Main Street is brought back to life with a vigor to preserve the past and pave way for a new generation of authenticity seeking travelers. In this episode, Mike shares his credible perspective on and passion for what he and his team at New Waterloo are curating in this ‘Honest Hill Country Getaway,' - from a culinary scene rivaling that of Austin paired with the talented winemaking scene right outside of town, to the boutique accommodations that are ‘delightfully detailed' and ‘eclectically elegant.' Top Takeaways [1:45] From a childhood growing up in Ritz Carlton hotels to beginning his hospitality career with The Four Seasons to finding his purpose in the luxury boutique hotel space, how Mike found his way to New Waterloo and took a chance on the Albert. [9:20] Who is Albert you ask? Lovingly described as "the Hill Country's last renaissance man or its first hippie,” there's much to say about this influential and innovative man. [14:10] Step back in time to a Saloon serving classic cocktails and a Pharmacy stocked with seasonal kolaches and sweet treats to snack on as you savor the nostalgic decor that adorns the walls. [20:10] Luxury looks a bit different in Hill Country, focusing on an abundance of time and convenience of location, a genuine community and connection to history, “because, you don't have to be anywhere else.” [24:40] From cozy reading nooks to modern suites designed as if you're staying in your hip aunt's city flat, from signature spa scents and seasonal ingredients to a sunken pool meant to mimic a Texas swimming hole, there's intention behind every detail of the Albert. [37:20] Come hungry and leave full - of award winning southern cuisine and authentic barbecue - and fond memories shared over creative cocktails and fine wines. Happy Spooky Wednesday, dears! We've got extraterrestrials and the Wild Wild West for you this week. Kala talks about former United States President Jimmy Carter's UFO experience, as well as the stories from past US presidents. Is the government really hiding something? If so, they don't seem to be hiding it very well. Then Brittany covers Big Nose Kate's Saloon in Tombstone, Arizona. Neither host is particularly thrilled about the description Kate has been given, but we both agree that Kate has lived an eventful and interesting life. Her life was so wild that it seems it couldn't be contained within our mortal plane, because she (and some friends) have decided to stick around and bother poor service workers even after death.
Recorded: AUG 26th 2024 Episode #292 is here, boys! Oh, and boy, do we have a White Whale of a guest for you! The one and only Peyton Manning invited us to his Knoxville bar, Saloon 16, to interview him. Will and Taylor sat down with "The Sheriff" in what can only be described as a "Peyton Manning Museum" of a room. Everywhere you looked on the walls, there was a legendary moment in the 2x Super Bowl Champion's career. Peyton opened up to The Boys about growing up as a Manning and the advice and wisdom his father, Archie, instilled in him. He spoke about his decision-making process when selecting Tennessee over Ole Miss, how he views leadership through the eyes of his father and other mentors, and what life looks like after retiring from the game. Peyton Manning's production company, Omaha Productions, is making huge moves in the sports digital/broadcast media industry. His show, "The Manning Cast," which he hosts with his brother Eli, is a fan favorite every Monday, and he is looking to build on their newfound success. Will and Taylor also keep it light for The Boys and dig into Peyton's rumored past of epic team pranks that he has pulled throughout the years. Eli is even brought up as potentially rivaling Peyton as the true "King of Pranks" in the Manning household. Knoxville, Denver, and Indy are all better places because Peyton Manning graced them with his incredible on-field talent and unmatched humility off the field. Looking back at his incredible stat sheet and long list of awards and trophies, it's easy to see why Peyton is often referred to as the "GOAT" by many around the world. In this week's intro, Will and Taylor break down their trip to A&M to watch the Fighting Irish take on the Aggies, their meeting with Shane Gillis, Johnny Manziel, and Von Miller, and they recap the CFB Week 1 matchups. Be sure to look out for The Boys' new show, The Locker Room. Their weekly gambling show will be covering CFB and the NFL this year, making sure no Tier 1's are left out of the mix. We are also offering a call-in segment for YOU to give The Boys your picks (stay tuned for more info from Will and Taylor). Delanie "The Mule" Walker will be joining the helm, with even a rotating guest picker each week. So, do me just the smallest favor... turn up those dials, smash that subscribe button, and LOCK IN!! The Boys love bringing content your way every week, especially when we have guests like these. Be sure to tell a friend if you enjoyed this episode and send a link their way. There's always room for 1 or 2 more on the bus. BIG HUGS... (and then lean in... a lil closer... come on...) tiny kisses... and have one heck of a Tuesday, boys!
