On this episode of My Music, Graham Coath heads to New Jersey for a thoughtful and entertaining conversation with Mike Potenza and Scott Selig of indie outfit The Melancholy Kings. From law firms and Battle of the Bands competitions to pedal steel experiments, vinyl culture and the strange beauty of mistakes left on records, this is a conversation that drifts far beyond the usual “how did the band form?” interview. Mike and Scott talk openly about songwriting, collaboration, the push and pull between city life and creativity, and why some of the best musical moments happen when things don't go quite to plan. There's discussion of influences ranging from Warren Zevon, Hüsker Dü and Sugar to Devo, The Replacements and early psychedelic Steve Miller, alongside reflections on modern music culture, AI-generated art, live performance, and the growing return to physical music formats. The Melancholy Kings also share stories behind tracks from their latest album, including accidental studio moments, bowed bass harmonics, strange true crime inspiration, and why the human element still matters more than perfection.A warm, funny and refreshingly honest conversation about music, creativity and keeping things real in an increasingly polished world.

Sona and I recap the latest Your Friends & Neighbors, “And for Everything Else, There Was Bowling,” with a long digression into shifting TV/sports monoculture, Ticketmaster/scalping dynamics, and Broadway ticket realities. We discuss declining NBA/awards ratings, how podcasts create smaller communities (including listeners who don't watch the shows), and plug the Patreon plus a bonus breakdown of a surprise secret episode of The Bear featuring Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. On the show recap, we debate this midseason “soft reset” focused on Coop processing his father's death, the cufflinks vs. bowling ball symbolism, the ghostlike POV/camera motif, and the Warren Zevon song “Keep Me in Your Heart for A While.” We criticize episode length, scattered subplots (Mel's perimenopause, Tory/Princeton, dog poop, Barney's wife, Ashe), and hope the final four episodes regain clear stakes and plot momentum. He hears how John only recently got hooked on researching his family's history, hears about his wonder of the spelling of his last name, and why he thinks Warren Zevon's 1978 song 'Lawyers, Guns and Money' describes his family tree well.THE LIFE STORY - NOAH DAVISJohn has chosen to tell the life story of his 3x Gt Grandfather Noah Davis born in 1818, who went on to become a Judge and a significant figure in American law and politics after making it into the US House of Representatives in 1868. His success did not stop there, as after being nominated as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York by President Ulysses S. Grant, he ended up convicting the notoriously corrupt and powerful politician William 'Boss Tweed' Tweed.THE BRICK WALL - HULDAH TAYLORJohn is looking for help to find records of the early life of his ancestor Huldah Taylor, and her parents. He believes that her father may have been called Gad Taylor, but evidence is somewhat thin - as he can't find a suitable Gad Taylor, and he's seen a few other trees that suggest other names than Gad.Huldah, born in 1758, is present in Suffield, Connecticut, but can you help John confirm her parents, and shed light on Gad Taylor? If you think that you can help John with a clue or research idea, you can send him a message via his Bluesky account, or alternatively, send us a message and we'll pass it right along.Whilst John is curious of Andrew's offer of help, can they Connect with the truth?- - -Episode CreditsAndrew Martin - Host and ProducerJohn Matheus - GuestFamily history isn't just names and dates. Grab a beer and join us tonight as we cover the case of Lisl Auman — the only person in Colorado history convicted of murder while she was handcuffed in the back of a police car. In 1997, a 21-year-old woman brought some guys along to retrieve her stuff from an ex-boyfriend's place in the mountains. What followed was a high-speed chase, a standoff at a Denver apartment complex, and the shooting death of Officer Bruce VanderJagt — a murder committed by her associate Matthaeus Jaehnig, who then turned the gun on himself. Lisl never fired a shot. She was already under arrest when it happened. She got life without parole anyway. We'll break down the felony murder rule that made it possible, the two cops who suspiciously revised their reports two days after the fact using nearly identical language, and how a dying Hunter S. Thompson threw the full weight of his gonzo legacy behind getting her out — rallying everyone from Warren Zevon to Johnny Depp to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers along the way. It took eight years, but the Colorado Supreme Court finally agreed something had gone very wrong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode 345Today we're joined by Jeff, a true pioneer from the wild, formative years of rock concert touring — what he calls the “pirate years.”Jeff recently published his book, How to Be a Lighting Guy (During the Pirate Years of Concert Touring), a firsthand account of building a career during the birth of modern concert lighting. From running liquid light shows in the early 1970s — including for Grand Funk before they were even Grand Funk Railroad — to experimenting with the first analog moving lights like the Cyklops, Jeff was there as the art and technology of live lighting were being invented in real time.He worked with Fantasee Lighting, pushed for the early R&D of computer-controlled moving lights with Morpheus Lights, and directed or designed lighting for legendary artists including Warren Zevon, Jimmy Buffett, Steve Miller Band, Huey Lewis and the News, Santana, Cyndi Lauper, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, and Grand Funk — who fittingly bookended his career.Jeff's journey came to an unexpected halt in the mid-'90s due to a collapsed vertebrae, but his perspective on success, failure, and longevity is what truly defines his story. As he writes in the final line of his book:“Though I have a lot of memorabilia… learning how to succeed at a lifetime of losing was my biggest reward.”He's here to talk about how life on the road has changed, what it was like when concert touring had no rulebook, and why sometimes the greatest success doesn't look the way you expect. This episode is brought to you by Main Light and Artistry In Motion

Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the very special next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series: it's Chuck's chat with legendary producer, songwriter, musician, and self-described “rock and roll creep” and Lord of Garbage Kim Fowley. He has been described as "one of the most colorful characters in the annals of rock & roll", and that is truly putting it mildly. Although admittedly he is always in rare form (I can confirm, having had a relationship with him toward the end of his life), he is in the rarest of rare forms in this interview, barely allowing Chuck to get a word in edgewise. The dynamic is delightful right from the off.  He is the single common denominator that links “Alley Oop”, Cat Stevens, The Soft Machine, Bruce Johnston, Kiss, Helen Reddy, John Lennon, Ariel Pink, The Byrds, Motley Crue, Frank Zappa, The Modern Lovers, Alice Cooper, Warren Zevon, The Runaways, and the idea of raising a lighter at a concert. Although this chat careens maniacally off the rails, the main topic of conversation centers on Kim's plan to pave the way for Pet Sounds to make a huge splash amongst the British press and pop star aristocracy. Kim passed away a few years later in 2015, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure.   There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Great interviews? Check! Superb musical guest? Check! How about Stupid Pet Tricks, Top Ten Lists, and stunts such as having the host work a McDonald's Drive Thru? If the Legend is David Letterman, check all those boxes. For decades we have welcomed David Letterman and his singular brand of comedy into our homes. And it's really no wonder, because Dave ruled a late night empire that was an authentic representation of its host -- a bit of midwestern "aw shucks" blended with a blinding quick wit and a taste for goofball stunts. Starting as a tv weatherman in his home state of Indiana, Dave caught fire after moving to Los Angeles in the late 1970s. In LA Dave became a popular standup and a favorite of Johnny Carson (who really wanted Dave to succeed him on the Tonight Show). When NBC tapped Jay Leno to succeed Johnny, Dave made the leap to CBS where he remained until 2015. But Dave would gather no moss after retiring his late night show (other than an impressive "retirement beard"), starting a Netflix interview show, popping up at awards shows, and inducting his longtime pal Warren Zevon into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As always find extended clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Dave? If you haven't seen a clip of Dave as a tv weatherman way back when, enjoy this little bit of late night host history.https://youtu.be/k66ek3AYz30?si=hs1n9b7JW8EyVQq5 It pays to have friends. In Dave's case the friend was Johnny Carson and boy did that pay off big time! Here's Dave's first appearance on The Tonight Show. https://youtu.be/TbSaBzO3tXA?si=w82sUqH5eihfo_QM Dave's late night shows spawned many great bits, none better than the Top Ten List. Here is one delivered by Don Rickles (another Legend), though Dave gets a few good shots in! https://youtu.be/jsSP0hScELo?si=WLjFnaX6yAoxbbDA Dave had a long time friend in Warren Zevon, featuring him frequently as a guest and also an occasional standing for bandleader Paul Shaffer. So when Warren was (FINALLY!) inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame it was Dave who did the honors. https://youtu.be/CYYzqt68dnE?si=MVoumj7iMUS4kzEl

By running Boston's Fort Apache studio with partner Sean Slade, Paul positioned himself at the forefront of the underground, indie sound that was suddenly above ground. His resume includes all time classics like Radiohead's Pablo Honey (featuring "Creep") and Hole's Live Through This, but also well-respected benchmarks by Buffalo Tom, Morphine, Pixies, Uncle Tupelo, Dinosaur Jr., and the Lemonheads. There are even fascinating outliers like Joe Jackson and Warren Zevon. We get into all of this and a ton more. He's still at it today too. Paul helped shape the sound of that pivotal time in rock history. We're lucky to hear from him!  Paul Q. Many of us first heard Wesley Stace on the 1990 album Here Comes the Groom that he recorded as John Wesley Harding, the name taken from Bob Dylan's stripped-down late-1967 album that itself misspelled a Texas outlaw's name. The English singer-songwriter has enjoyed a robust folk-rock career as Harding but also has written four acclaimed novels under his own name and began recording albums without the pseudonym in 2013. Still, he recently performed as John Wesley Harding at a Wild Honey Foundation tribute concert to Warren Zevon and on his own tour. Here he discusses where Harding ends and Stace begins (or vice versa), how he evolved as an artist, why he mined Frank Capra projects for early album titles, what Zevon once told him, how he reacted to not-so-nice comments from Elvis Costello and why he decided to become a U.S. citizen in 2025. Stace, no surprise, is as thoughtful and witty in conversation as in song. (Photo by Ebet Roberts)

Episode 437 of Friends Talking Nerdy brings Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd back to the mic for their month-long dive into all things Holiday, and this week they're tackling a topic that hits everyone right in the eggnog: Holiday Relationships. In this episode, the duo explores the emotional gymnastics we all perform when navigating family during the season—whether that family is the one we were born into or the one we lovingly assembled like a geeky, mismatched Avengers lineup. They dig into the pressure cooker of expectations, traditions, and old dynamics that magically reappear the moment you walk through the door. From managing long-standing tension to dealing with those relatives who treat political debates like a competitive sport, the conversation stays honest, warm, and grounded.Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd break down practical strategies for keeping interactions healthy and humane—things like setting boundaries without lighting the Yule log on fire, checking in with your own stress levels, finding small ways to recharge, and making space for empathy even when the room is already too crowded. They also discuss how chosen family can provide stability, joy, and sanity when the holidays feel overwhelming. To wrap things up, they share their Songs of the Week. Professor Aubrey brings “The Water” by Johnny Flynn, a reflective and beautifully layered piece that mirrors the emotional ebb and flow of the season. Tim counters with Warren Zevon's “A Certain Girl,” a punchy, playful classic that adds a little spark to the playlist. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song.
