In campus news, university recreation reopened in September after being closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to The Appalachian, UREC indoor facilities have reopened at 25% capacity. All visitors must wear masks at all times, remain 12-feet apart and present their daily health check passports. Locally, Hospitality Mints announced that it will be closing its doors after more than 40 years in Boone. The company cited impacts to its industry due to the pandemic and other restrictions, according to The Watauga Democrat. Hospitality Mints was founded in 1976 and is the largest supplier of custom mints in the United States. With sales down 80% and several staff layoffs, the company is currently expected to be closed by June 2021. In national news, the president could be investigated for tax fraud, according to the New York Times. After a yearlong battle for President Trump's tax records, the Manhattan district attorney's office suggested that it has the grounds to investigate him and his business for fraud in court documents filed Monday. The district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., has never revealed the scope of the inquiry into the president's financial documents due to grand jury secrecy. Monday's court filings suggest a significant change.
