In a world of turmoil where the only certainty is uncertainty, what happens if we who yearn for a future we'd be proud to leave behind began really to speak the quiet part out loud? What happens if we acknowledge the meaning crisis of our culture and state clearly that we need a world based on Love: on the raw, wild, wonder of life itself? And what happens if we shape our politics around this, instead of defensive attempts to make the death cult of predatory capitalism feel less... deathly? This week's guest, Jamie Bristow is someone who lives in the worlds where policies are made and, for the past sixteen years, he has been consciously committed to being a Spiritual Warrior with all this implies. Like Jon Alexander, Jamie started off life as an advertising executive before realising he needed to align his inner and outer worlds.  Now, he's a writer and policy advisor working at the intersection of inner and outer transformation and sustainability. For eight years, he was clerk to the UK's All Party Parliamentary Group on Mindfulness and director of the associated policy institute, the Mindfulness Initiative, (where he helped to introduce mindfulness to a number of other parliaments).  During this time he worked with legislators around the world to make mindfulness and compassion training serious matters of public policy and catalysts for a healthier political process. In 2023, he joined the Inner Development Goals team to lead on public narrative and policy development, emphasising the inner skills and qualities needed for a sustainable transition. His work includes influential reports such as Reconnection: Meeting the Climate Crisis Inside Out and The System Within: Addressing the inner dimension of sustainability and systems transformation. In this discussion I finish talking about Dickens' A Christmas Carol, by discussing Staves 4 and 5. The great gift Scrooge receives from the three ghosts is a awareness of the gift that had always already been given; this brings about a new life of gratitude in Scrooge. Life gets its full meaning only when one becomes grateful for what one has always already had - life itself. This is the meaning of the Christmas: the gift of Life Itself among us.

What is the Ego?The ego is idolatry; the sign of limited and separated self, born in a body, doomed to suffer and to end its life in death. It is the “will” that sees the Will of God as enemy, and takes a form in which it is denied. The ego is the “proof” that strength is weak and love is fearful, life is really death, and what opposes God alone is true. The ego is insane. In fear it stands beyond the Everywhere, apart from All, in separation from the Infinite. In its insanity it thinks it has become a victor over God Himself. And in its terrible autonomy it “sees” the Will of God has been destroyed. It dreams of punishment, and trembles at the figures in its dreams; its enemies, who seek to murder it before it can ensure its safety by attacking them. The Son of God is egoless. What can he know of madness and the death of God, when he abides in Him? What can he know of sorrow and of suffering, when he lives in eternal joy? What can he know of fear and punishment, of sin and guilt, of hatred and attack, when all there is surrounding him is everlasting peace, forever conflict-free and undisturbed, in deepest silence and tranquility? To know reality is not to see the ego and its thoughts, its works, its acts, its laws and its beliefs, its dreams, its hopes, its plans for its salvation, and the cost belief in it entails. In suffering, the price for faith in it is so immense that crucifixion of the Son of God is offered daily at its darkened shrine, and blood must flow before the altar where its sickly followers prepare to die.Yet will one lily of forgiveness change the darkness into light; the altar to illusions to the shrine of Life Itself. And peace will be restored forever to the holy minds which God created as His Son, His dwelling place, His joy, His love, completely His, completely one with Him.LESSON 331There Is No Conflict, For My Will Is Yours. How foolish, Father, to believe Your Son could cause himself to suffer! Could he make a plan for his damnation, and be left without a certain way to his release? You love me, Father. You could never leave me desolate, to die within a world of pain and cruelty. How could I think that Love has left Itself? There is no will except the Will of Love. Fear is a dream, and has no will that can conflict with Yours. Conflict is sleep, and peace awakening. Death is illusion; life, eternal truth. There is no opposition to Your Will. There is no conflict, for my will is Yours.Forgiveness shows us that God's Will is one, and that we share it. Let us look upon the holy sights forgiveness shows today, that we may find the peace of God. Amen.- Jesus Christ in ACIM

In this conversation, Zak and Rufus examine the shift that has taken place from a belief in the intrinsic value of the universe to the modernist view that denies the reality of value.Zak explains how this loss of value has contributed to the current metacrisis, impacting areas such as education, architecture, and technology. The concept of "civilizational transvaluation" and the dangers of a potential civilizational collapse during this period of profound change are also discussed. Alongside this, the potential for conscious evolution is explored, which could enable new forms of human cooperation and flourishing—provided that we establish an urgent, coherent discourse around value to address the challenges we are facing. Kyle's story highlights the power in questioning, learning, and trusting the unfolding of one's life journey. The Truth Is Beyond Belief!: Some thoughts to make you think about the power of your thoughts...by Jerry DurrThis book was written to be inspirational; to inspire you to take the journey from your "normal" state of thoughts and worries and fears back to your "natural" state of peace and perfection. To help you remember how Adam felt on the morning of his creation before he had a chance to create any angers or regrets about the past, or any worries or fears about the future, but simply enjoyed the peace and perfection that can only be found in the present moment. Its intention is to have you think of things you may never have thought about, and it is meant to help you see more deeply into the miracle of yourself and of Life Itself. The thoughts within this book are meant to help shift your perceptions of yourself and the world. And to help you remember the things truly worth remembering; to move you from beliefs of lifes ordinariness and imperfection to the Truth of its Extraordinariness and Perfection. After having studied under some great Teachers, and having spent many years studying the great Teachings, the author's hope is to provide a slightly different perspective so that the reader may better understand their absolute good fortune to be alive, and come to realize that this is not only a 'Once in a lifetime Miracle, but a Once in Eternity Miracle'. Spending most of my life in the field of Engineering has provided the opportunity to better understand the amazing perfection of the physical world, from the molecular level allowing the many chemical constructions of our physical bodies, to understanding the non-physical realm of electromagnetic waves which continuously permeate our atmosphere. I saw that just as these different invisible energy frequencies would go unnoticed without a transducer such as a tv set or cell phone to reveal their presence, so would the spiritual realm go unnoticed with our physical bodies to show its continual presence. The more I understood these amazing aspects of our creation the more I came to see the absolute perfection of the intelligence underlying it all. The thoughts within this book are meant to help shift your perceptions of yourself and the world and to move you from beliefs of life's ordinariness and imperfection to the Truth of its Extraordinariness and Perfection. We must come to realize that it's not an ideal life (i.e. as you might think it should be) where no one gets sick, gets old, or dies, but it is a Perfect World - The Truth that lies just Beyond your Beliefs!https://www.amazon.com/Truth-Beyond-Belief-Thoughts-Think/dp/1545634114http://jerrydurr.com/http://www.urlinkpublishing.com  http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/81524jdurl.mp3

Maybe you will always walk with the hurt. But now, you hold it. It doesn't hold you. You are the container, not the contained. It doesn't control you any longer, the wound. Because it is drenched in awareness now. Drenched in You. Loved by You. Even celebrated by You. You do not heal 'from' trauma. You find healing 'in' the trauma. The Powerful One. He was sitting up when the question was asked, and he leaned over on his elbow and tapped his heart three times with tears coming down from his eyes. There was total silence for a moment. Maharajji had brought the reality of Christ into everyone's consciousness, and he said, “Christ never got angry. When he was crucified he felt only love. Christ was never attached to anything; he even gave away his own body.” And at that point everyone was crying—we had gone through the complete Passion of Christ. And all of a sudden he sat up and said, “The mind can travel a million miles in the blink of an eye—Buddha said that.” -Maharajji Support the show

Through navigating the intricate world of play behavior we can dissect how animals, from rambunctious rat pups to the majestic meerkats, use this seemingly frivolous activity as a critical tool for survival. Explore the fine line between amusement and aggression, and discover how young creatures use play as a classroom for the lessons of life, playing a part in everything from social hierarchies to practicing recovery.David Toomey is a Professor and Co-Director of the PWTC Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is also the author and co-author of several books, including Kingdom of Play: What Ball-bouncing Octopuses, Belly-flopping Monkeys, and Mud-sliding Elephants Reveal about Life Itself and The New Time Travelers: A Journey to the Frontiers of Physics.David and Greg discuss where humor meets hierarchy, where verbal jousts and jests reveal much about the social fabric of our own species and the animal kingdom – Play Behavior. David discusses the evolutionary parallels between the spontaneous nature of improv and the unpredictability of life itself, proving that being adept at handling the unexpected may well be hardwired in our DNA. Then they examine the broader implications of play throughout life, challenging the separation of creation and judgment and considering the profound implications of play for our sense of self and the wider world.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why is play the defining characteristic of life?33:49: Play and natural selection seem to have quite a lot in common. They are both provisional and they both balance competition and cooperation, and so on and so forth. All the many features of natural selection are also features of play. And you could push this, and I do push this a bit further, and say natural selection is the defining feature of life. You can say, well, life is something that grows, consumes, and dies, but the same can be said of stars or candle flames. You can say that life reproduces, but the same could be said of crystals. But the thing that characterizes life that does not characterize candle flames, stars, or crystals is that it evolved by natural selection. So, if natural selection and play share features, then I don't think it's going too far to say that life is fundamentally playful.Exploration vs. play04:32: One way to separate exploration from play is an animal exploring its environment or exploring something will conclude its exploration and decide that's all I'm going to do, that's all. Now I'm comfortable; I've sufficiently explored it, and we're done with that. But there's no clear endpoint to play. An animal stops playing only when it's tired of playing or becomes interested in something else. So all of that together may be sufficient to define play.Natural selection is improv21:48: Natural selection has many features, and one feature of natural selection, and Darwin noted this: it seldom works from scratch. It takes an existing feature and changes it—maybe improves it. So, for instance, the bones of a paw, if you will, if they are lengthened, and lightened, and hollowed, become the bones of a bird's wing, but the fundamental structure is the same; they're the same number, they are the same relation to each other, or they become the bones of a whale's fin, same thing, same number, same relation between them. So, natural selection doesn't invent things from scratch very often. It just changes things, and that's exactly what improv does. We all know the rule of improv is yes and. And that is, it seems to me, its natural selection is also yes and.On the evolutionary purposes of play06:59: This is what anyone would answer you if you asked the question right on this play. One is that it's training for adult behavior. That is, we're learning how to explore, hunt, or mate in our play. The other is that it's socialization. That is, for social animals, and consider wolf cubs. Wolves need to play together if they are to learn to cooperate, and they need to cooperate if they are to take down an animal larger than themselves, like an elk. A wolf can't do it alone. Thus, play is necessary for the survival of the individual animal. It's also essential for the survival of the pack itself. So those are the two long-standing hypotheses.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Potter StewartGordon Burghardt BooksHerbert SpencerSergio Pellis Google Scholar PageNatural selectionGeorge RomanesDavid HumeFrans de WaalLamarckismOrganic SelectionJohan HuizingaGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at the University of Massachusetts AmherstDavid Toomey on LinkedInHis Work:Amazon Author PageKingdom of Play: What Ball-bouncing Octopuses, Belly-flopping Monkeys, and Mud-sliding Elephants Reveal about Life ItselfThe New Time Travelers: A Journey to the Frontiers of PhysicsAmelia Earhart's Daughters: The Wild And Glorious Story Of American Women Aviators From World War II To The Dawn Of The Space AgeStormchasers: The Hurricane Hunters and Their Fateful Flight into Hurricane Janet

In this deep, thoughtful conversation, two of the men at the heart of the Climate Majority Project discuss their own journeys into eco-spirituality - what they believe it to be and why it's a core, foundational bedrock of their lives. If you follow anything else that Faith and I do together, you'll know that we believe heart-felt connection to the All That Is forms the bedrock of human existence and is the pathway to human flourishing, to our being good ancestors, to laying that foundation on which future generations can build a world where we are an integral part of the web of life. The whole of the Accidental Gods membership program exists to help people find ways to make this heartfelt connection and the Dreaming Awake contemporary shamanic training takes it more deeply. We don't often get to unpick this in depth here on the podcast. But long term friend of the podcast, the author, philosopher and academic, Rupert Read, suggested a while ago that we might like to have a three way conversation with him and Woodford Roberts who is an integral part of the Climate Majority Project of which they are both founder members. Both have been active in Extinction Rebellion. Both have moved on to believing that change happens in other ways, and both have at the core of their actions and activism a heartfelt connection to the All That Is, however we define it. We have regular guest appearances by people who work deeply in shamanic traditions, or other aspects of contemporary spirituality, but this is the first time we've had a chance to explore what we might call western 'eco-spirituality' in a way that is practiced distinctly from contemporary - or indigenous - shamanic practice. Rupert is a philosopher who has studied both Quaker and Buddhist traditions, naming Joanna Macey and Thich Nhat Hahn as his teachers. Woodford Roberts - who is called Rob within the movement - comes from a more meta-cognitive stance, but still deeply embedded within western psycho-spiritual philosophy, albeit with personal experience in the shamanic realities. So this was a deep, wide ranging, thoughtful episode and I hope it helps you to navigate your own routes to thinking, feeling and being in these turbulent times. So please welcome back Rupert Read and welcome for the first time, Woodford Roberts, both of the Climate Majority Project. Bios: Woodford Roberts is a writer based in Cornwall. With a focus on eco-spirituality and emotion, Woodford's work seeks to help readers stare down the truth of the metacrisis as he seeks to do the same, sharing his own spiritual journey of navigating the challenging terrain of a time between two worlds and the lessons found within. His work appears in Dark Mountain Books, Resurgence & The Ecologist. His first book, called 'How To Be Happy At The End Of The World' is currently in development, and he publishes on a Substack of the same name. Prof Rupert Read is co-director of the Climate Majority Project and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of several books, including This Civilisation is Finished, Parents for a Future, Why Climate Breakdown Matters and Do you want to know the truth? Why do monkeys belly flop, elephants mud-slide and rats play-fight? In his new book, “Kingdom of Play,” science writer and professor David Toomey set out to answer these questions. It's an area of study that hasn't gotten much attention, and Toomey dives into animal behavioral research looking at the neuroscience, and even dream study, behind it all. We'll talk to Toomey and learn about what animal play can tell us about our own human behavior. And we hear from you: What animal play have you observed and have had questions about? Guests: David Toomey, author, “Kingdom of Play: What Ball-bouncing Octopuses, Belly-flopping Monkeys, and Mud-sliding Elephants Reveal about Life Itself"; english professor, University of Massachusetts, Amherst - his other books include “Weird Life” and “The New Time Travelers.”

It is hard to pinpoint when Chaz Ebert first experienced Life Itself, Steve James's documentary about her late husband and the legendary film critic, Roger Ebert. Initially conceived as a multi-year project to capture Roger's vibrant life and career, the film also documented what would become the final weeks of Roger's life. Film icons like Werner Herzog, Ava Duvernay, and Martin Scorcese illustrate the ways in which Roger's work inspired them individually and impacted culture on a broad scale. Tracing Roger's journey from cub reporter to cultural icon and devoted family man, the film is a testament to his ardently populist sensibility, larger-than-life personality, fierce love of movies, and the vigor with which he met every day even as he endured life with cancer and its effects. In conversation with Cooper and Tabitha, Chaz reveals the one movie review Roger acknowledged he got wrong, her reluctance to continue filming as Roger's health deteriorated, what it meant to experience the film's premiere with an audience at Sundance, and how their shared concern for humanity continues to inspire her work today. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr Lee Know. He is a licensed naturopathic doctor and Cannanda's co-founder and Managing Director. This company manufactures Natural Health Products to assist people and animals in living long and happy lives. Dr Lee has always been interested in health and medicine. He thought that, just like others, he would go to a conventional medical school. However, he truly desires to study nutrition, botanical medicine, and all other types of traditional medicine. The problem is that he doesn't know the path towards it. Moving forward, Dr Lee met a person who introduced him the naturopathic medicine. Since then, he has continued to study the field of medicine he is interested in. Dr Lee Know is also the author of Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine: The Key to Understanding Disease, Chronic Illness, Aging, and Life Itself. This book dives deeper into the scientific understanding of what mitochondria is and how it affects medicine in the future. In this episode, Dr Lee discusses how mitochondria and the ketogenic diet are linked. He also shares tips on how to take care of our mitochondria. Dr. Lee shares his journey in building his company, Cannanda. Aside from that, he talks about what Endocannabinoid System is. Furthermore, Dr Lee tells the difference between THC and CBD and how to ease a dog's anxiety using one of their top-selling products. Tune in as we chat about the mitochondria, ketogenic diet, endocannabinoid system, cannabis, and his company, Cannanda.   Get Cannanda products here (coupon code applied) https://www.cannanda.com/KETOKAMP Order Keto Flex: http://www.ketoflexbook.com -------------------------------------------------------- Download your FREE Vegetable Oil Allergy Card here: https://onlineoffer.lpages.co/vegetable-oil-allergy-card-download/ / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  ⭐ Bioptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough. Mitochondria is very heavily involved in the ketogenic diet, or the benefits of the ketogenic diet really heavily weigh on the mitochondria. There is a strong link between the benefits of the ketogenic diet and how it improves the functioning of the mitochondria. There are incredible success stories of people with Alzheimer's improving their condition by going on a ketogenic diet. Studies on the ketogenic diet and calorie restriction found that you can reverse type two diabetes.  [18:15] Are Worried About Your Mitochondria? Get Physically Active and Take Care of It! A sedentary lifestyle has a huge negative impact on the mitochondria Being physically active is the greatest thing you can do for your mitochondria. You need to ensure that you feed your body with the nutrients it needs, but not in the way you introduce excessive calories.  The more mitochondria you have, the better everything else works. [27:46] Dr Lee's Excellent Journey in Building His Company, Cannanda Dr Lee has always been interested in studying the Endocannabinoid system's influence on health. The endocannabinoid system and the mitochondria are both related to homeostasis. Anytime something goes wrong in the body, the endocannabinoid system's job is to jump into action and start the processes needed to bring about healing or bring those processes back towards their balanced state.  Medicinal use of cannabis was legalized in Canada, which allowed him to study more, and grew his interest in this field. Dr Lee realizes the need to create a more accessible and economical business for customers to buy. [33:53] How to Activate Endocannabinoid System to Regulate Our Nervous System? The two main components of the Endocannabinoid System are the cannabinoid compounds that our bodies make and the cannabinoid receptors.  Cannabinoid receptors have two main types that are often talked about, and that is cannabinoid receptor type one or CB1, and cannabinoid receptor type two or CB2. When you use cannabis and THC, that activates the CB1 receptors, and that's what gets people high. CB2 brings a lot of health benefits when activated. The difference in CB1 is that you won't be intoxicated. The Endocannabinoid system regulates the nervous system by sending inhibitory signals up the chain. [41:05] THC and CBD: What Is Their Difference and How It Affects The Benefits You Could Get? CBD actually doesn't activate CB1 or CB2 receptors. Unlike THC, which can activate both CB1 and CB2 receptors, when you get CB2 activated from using cannabis, it's actually coming from THC. The best type of product is what they call a full spectrum extract because the full spectrum will have the THC, and that's where the CB2 receptor activation and many of the health benefits will actually come from. Dr Lee's product is a selective CB2 agonist or an activator. And that means it activates CB2 receptors without activating the CB1. Hence, you get all the health or physiological benefits of activating CB2 receptors but none of the intoxications that comes with CB1 activation.  [47:44] Dog Anxiety: How to Safely Use Cannabis to Help Your Dog Every vertebrate mammal has an endocannabinoid system.  Dr Lee has a product called Dog Ease CB2, their top seller on Amazon. Dog Ease CB2 have healthcare approval. People use Dog Ease CB2 for stress-related behavior in dogs, whether it's separation anxiety, thunders, or anything that makes a dog nervous.  Cats also metabolize terpenes at a much slower rate than humans and dogs. The dose given to cats is a fraction of what the dog label says.  AND MUCH MORE! In this podcast episode, Larry Ostola talks to Graham Broad about his book, Part of Life Itself: The War Diary of Lieutenant Leslie Howard Miller, CEF published by the University of Toronto Press in October 2023. This extensively annotated wartime diary illuminates the military service of Leslie Howard Miller (1889–1979), a Canadian soldier who served in the First World War. Miller joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in 1914. In his off-duty hours, he kept this extraordinarily eloquent diary of his training, deployment overseas, service on the Western Front, and periods of leave in the United Kingdom. Graham Broad, working from a transcription of the diary produced by Miller's family, includes a thorough introduction and afterword, as well as over 500 notes that situate and explain Miller's many references to the people, places, and events he encountered. Unpublished for over a century, written in bracing and engaging prose, and illustrated with Miller's own drawings and unseen photographs, Part of Life Itself illuminates a bygone world and stands as one of Canada's most important wartime diaries. Graham Broad is an associate professor of History at Kings College at Western University. Image Credit: UTP If you like our work, please consider supporting it: bit.ly/support_WTY. When he was 18 years old, Ted Hall, then a Harvard undergraduate, was recruited to join the Manhattan Project, becoming the youngest physicist on the U.S. team racing to build an atomic bomb before the Nazis. When it became clear that Germany would lose the war, Hall feared that the Americans might maintain a monopoly over nuclear weapons, an imbalance he thought could lead to global tyranny. So he decided to share secret designs with the Soviet Union, which was then an ally of the United States on its own path to build a bomb. That fateful action, and the life-long consequences for Hall and his wife, Joan, are the subject of filmmaker Steve James' new documentary, “A Compassionate Spy.” Using original interviews with members of Hall's family, and archival footage of the now deceased physicist, James explores Hall's motivations for sharing nuclear secrets and the FBI's attempts to charge him with that crime. It's a complex story about espionage, idealism, and ultimately the love between Ted and Joan that helped to keep the truth hidden for decades.Shane Harris spoke with James about the film and his career as a documentary filmmaker.
