Ten years later, we're still talking about Colin Kaepernick because he conquered the NFL. End Racism still sits in every end zone while he watches college football. Naomi Osaka turned the U.S. Open into an Allen Iverson costume for street cred, a 28-year-old woman cosplaying as a black man sold as progress. The Tennessee Titans pulled Jared Stillman's credential after he told Cam Ward the preseason was "not well." Franchises now manage worship, not press access. Tony Romo posted an Instagram apology after a Wisconsin OWI. CBS is not scared of the drinking. Miami Hurricanes fans have a new reason to believe: A'mir Sears flashes true two-way star potential, drawing comparisons to Travis Hunter. After a dominant display against Bishop Gorman, can Sears redefine what it means to be a game-changer on both sides of the ball? His elite athleticism, hand-eye coordination, and explosive lateral movement suggest he's a year-one starter and possibly the most dynamic skill recruit Miami has landed since Jeremiah Smith. Brian Smith breaks down Sears' positional versatility, from shutdown corner to dangerous playmaker on special teams, and considers whether top programs like LSU or Texas could pry him away before National Signing Day. The conversation explores how Sears stacks up against high school legends like Allen Iverson and Travis Hunter, discusses Miami's recruiting strategy, and raises the question: Will Sears' commitment stay rock-solid amid aggressive national interest? Long before ESPN's SportsCenter became a cultural institution, Fred Hickman was helping define what sports television could be. One of the fledgling Cable News Network's original on-air personalities, Hickman became nationally known alongside Nick Charles on CNN Sports Tonight, where "Nick and Hick" paired serious sports journalism with an easy, conversational chemistry that made the nightly highlights feel both authoritative and welcoming. Their signature "Play of the Day" became so recognizable that, as the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, a viewer in Germany held up a bedsheet urging Fred to make a united Germany that night's selection — a wonderfully improbable measure of the show's massive reach and influence. This week, we revisit Hickman's remarkable life with journalist Harrison Golden, co-author of the posthumously published memoir "Channeling: My Life On Air, Off Air, and In Living Color." Golden first knew Hickman as a kid watching Yankees coverage on the newly launched YES Network, then encountered him years later while interviewing for a local television job in Baton Rouge. The two became colleagues and friends, and after Hickman was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he entrusted Golden with helping preserve the story he wanted to leave behind. Our conversation follows Hickman from his hometown Springfield, Illinois, to CNN's improvisational early days; the rise and enduring bond of "Nick and Hick"; Hickman's harrowing struggle with cocaine addiction in Detroit and the second chance that brought him back to Turner HQ in Atlanta; the explosive growth and eventual fragmentation of cable sports; and later chapters at YES, ESPN and beyond.  We also revisit Hickman's pioneering importance as one of the first Black sportscasters with sustained national visibility — and, of course, his infamous first-place vote for Allen Iverson in 2000 that kept Shaquille O'Neal from becoming the NBA's first unanimous Most Valuable Player that year. + + +    SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY BUY THE BOOK:        "Channeling: My Life On Air, Off Air, and In Living Color": https://amzn.to/4ghFCIg   SPONSOR THANKS:  Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.royalretros.com/?ref=SEATS Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

Producer and reporter Ramtin Arablouei (co-creator of the NPR show, Throughline) has a simple question: why are so many NBA players wearing a compression sleeve on their arm? It seems like everyone has one. Do they all have elbow issues? The answer is really the story of Allen Iverson, an underdog player who went from a prison cell to international fame in just a few years. And through the story of him and his sleeve, you can see the whole history of basketball's relationship with race, with respectability politics, and who gets to look like what on the court. Then we discuss Russell Westbrook's retirement, his legacy, and the bigger question of whether NBA legends like Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, and Allen Iverson were pushed out of the league before they were ready. Plus, Skip Bayless has some thoughts on Westbrook's Hall of Fame case. The NBA Christmas Day schedule is officially loaded, so we pick the matchup we're most excited for. Then we jump into the NFL preseason, discussing what we're watching for from our favorite teams, Jaxson Dart's early visit to the blue tent, and the ongoing Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders conversation. In Rule Breakers, we get into Stephen A. Smith receiving the thumbs-down award from the NABJ, Jayden Daniels sending a cease-and-desist letter to LSU Nick Sirianni reportedly using ChatGPT to help connect with his players, and Claressa Shields continuing to dominate with another TKO victory. And, of course, Beav and Felix discuss how terrrible (or not) the movie 'Obsession' was. Enjoy!

Because the question is not whether Mitchell is good enough to get paid. He is.The real question is whether the Cavs are good enough around him to win big. After 52 wins, an Eastern Conference Finals run, and a sweep at the hands of the Knicks, Cleveland is officially out of “almost” season. If you pay like a contender, you have to build like one.But the East is not waiting around.Giannis is in Miami.Jaylen Brown is in Philly. The Knicks are sitting on the throne.Boston is retooling.Toronto is trying to bring back that old feeling. And Cleveland just locked in its star while the rest of the conference started loading up.Q gets into the real Eastern Conference question: did Cleveland lock in a championship window, or did the Cavs just pay top-tier money for a team that may still be one tier short? Then it is time for the NFL check-in.Shedeur Sanders is trying to close the gap in the Browns' quarterback battle, but the name cannot be louder than the numbers. Q looks at the receipts from Shedeur's rookie season, the training camp buzz, and whether Cleveland should give him a real shot — or make him earn every bit of it.Plus, Travis Hunter is one of the NFL's most unique talents, but should Jacksonville use him heavily both ways or protect the investment and make cornerback the priority? And later, Q brings out Start, Bench, Cut with one of the nastiest debates yet:Most entertaining prime:Allen Iverson.Derrick Rose.Russell Westbrook. Not the best career. Not the greatest legacy. Most must-see TV.This is not lazy hot takes. This is not fake outrage. This is sports talk with receipts, humor, context, and a clear point of view.Around here, we do not sit on the fence.Pick a side.

The Author Events Series presents Quiara Alegría Hudes & Ray Beauchamp | The White Hot & Misunderstood The White Hot takes the form of a letter from mother to daughter about a moment of abandonment that would stretch from ten days to ten years-an explanation, but not an apology. Hudes narrates April's story-spiritual and sexy, fierce and funny-with delicate lyricism and tough love. Just as April finds in her painful and absurd sojourn the key to freeing herself and her family from a cage of generational trauma, so Hudes turns April's stumbling pursuit of herself into an unforgettable short epic of self-discovery. In Misunderstood, Allen Iverson shares in searing clarity and touching candor his meteoric rise from impoverished child in the Virginia projects to high school champion to Georgetown University protégé of legendary coach John Thompson, and finally to NBA All-Star and Reebok's Vice President of Basketball. Quiara Alegría Hudes is an American writer. Her work includes the Pulitzer Prize winning play Water by the Spoonful, the Tony Award winning Broadway musical and major motion picture In the Heights, the animated film Vivo, and the essay High Tide of Heartbreak. As a prison reform activist, Hudes and her cousin founded Emancipated Stories, a platform where people behind bars can share one page of their life story with the world. Ray Beauchamp has been a criminal defense attorney in New York for the last fifteen years, having advocated for the rights of indigent people at the Legal Aid Society in Manhattan and the Bronx. Prior to Legal Aid, he clerked in the Second Circuit and served as managing editor of the Fordham Law Review. And prior to all that, he was a kid in West Philly, developing and nurturing a deep love of the 76ers. With the Knicks reaching the NBA Finals, the debate becomes less about one old take and more about whether Brunson can finally force critics to admit they were wrong. Evan and Tiki break down the nuance in Hammon's argument, the historical comparisons to Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, Steph Curry, and Isiah Thomas, and why Knicks fans have stayed so fired up about it.
