This episode is sponsored by smartwater®Ruth E. Carter is a trailblazing costume designer known for her work on Malcolm X, the Black Panther films, Sinners, and so many more iconic works. She has been awarded Academy Awards, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award, the Costume Designers Guild Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But before that, she was exploring Black literature and history in Black Studies-focused enrichment programs in her home state of Massachusetts. When she was a young adult, she was deconstructing clothing and taking notes from grunge scenes, citing Lisa Bonet and Madonna as early beauty and style inspiration. In our conversation, Ruth walks us through her life and career, explaining how the girl who dressed like a grunge artist would introduce Afrofuturism to the world. During our chat, Ruth tells us about how she has always drawn on her interest in literary, dramatic, and visual arts to design on film sets. She shared the initial culture shock she experienced at her HBCU, Hampton, and how the theater department helped her blend her artistic sensibilities with the coiffed presentation of her classmates. Ruth detailed how she drew on these experiences in her first position in School Daze, and how her dedication led to the first of many creative collaborations with directors like Spike Lee, which would shape her career. Our conversation ranges from the specific way she employs the lessons her psychologist mother taught her, like gaining and keeping people's trust, to spending time with Tina Turner. We discussed so much of her portfolio, and what compelled her to begin archiving her designs, which now make up the traveling exhibition “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design.” Ruth is open about her painstakingly detailed commitment to historical accuracy and how her early exposure to ideas about the future being a site of freedom and exploration shaped the visual identity for Black Panther. This week Mea Culpa welcomes the legendary actor, comedian, director, and producer Henry Winkler. Best known for his iconic turn as “The Fonze” on Happy Days and more recently for his Emmy-nominated role on the hit comedy “Barry”, playing beloved acting teacher Gene Cousineau. And before that, he was a staple on “Arrested Development”, “Hank Zipzer” and Winkler even appeared as himself on “Bojack Horseman”. All told, Winkler's accolades include a Primetime Emmy, two Daytime Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Critics Choice Award. Not bad. He's a Yale “School of Drama” Grad and his acting career spans 6 decades. He has performed in both dramatic and comedic roles, in film television, and on stage. Though one might say he is the quintessential character actor. He's done several pictures with his buddy Adam Sandler including, “Little Nicky” and “Don't Mess with the Zohan” and has continued to collaborate with his “Happy Day”s cohort, Ron Howard. Journalist Michael Schneider said recently, that "the rumors are true," Winkler is "one of the nicest, most genuine men in all of Hollywood.” Michael and Henry Winkler talk about their family life, their careers, and of course politics.

In a little over a week the 98th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles. Many of the categories are looking like a toss up but it will be a shock if the Best Leading Actress goes to anyone other than Jessie Buckley for her devastating performance in Hamnet. Having just won variations of best leading lady at the Critics Choice Awards, the SAG Actor Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Golden Globes, Buckley is on a roll. Earlier in the week, Buckley sat down with guest hosts Taylor Antrim and Marley Marius ahead of today's theatrical release of The Bride! In creating this retelling of the Bride of Frankenstein, Buckley spoke about the challenge of finding her character. “It was such a huge undertaking to really create three individual personalities and metabolize them and have them be in conversation with myself.” The film was also incredibly physical and required that she learn tap and gaga dancing for the role. Buckley had worked previously with Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Lost Daughter, who she described as one of the most important women in her life. “Maggie has a real vision and there's so much intention behind what she's trying to say with her stories and why she's choosing to tell a story at all,” Buckley told The Run-Through, “I think what she asks all of her actors and herself is to ask the question that's gonna challenge you.”With her daughter on the road with her for this press tour, Buckley toggles quickly between “changing a nappy” and putting a red carpet dress on. The combination of being thrust into the spotlight and being a new mother has changed her relationship with fashion. Now working with stylist to the stars Danielle Goldberg, she feels empowered to let herself feel seen in her changing body. “Right at the beginning she was like, I just wanna see you. And I felt like I could breathe for the first time.” Also on the episode, The Run-Through gets an exclusive behind-the-scenes pass at the Rick Owens and Isabel Marant shows. Between getting their makeup done and getting their clothes on, Alex Consani and Mona Touggard chat about how they make time to read despite the chaos that happens backstage. Plus, Rick Owens himself reveals the inspiration by his collection. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. This week on the MalloryBros. podcast the Bros are back to start the new year off VIRTUALLY as Terrell's son has come down with a small sickness. Nonetheless, the Bros kick it off with a Weekend Recap to recap how they brought in the New Year together with their fiancé's, free of the kids. A huge part of the podcast today was the recent between TDE Grammy Award winning Artist Doechii's brewing beef with popular Streamer Adin Ross. The Bros talk in detail about the history leading up to the alleged beef and how things have really gone overboard. The Bros don't agree with Adin Ross' disrespect and feel he's overstepping because he feels comfortable enough to do so. Next the Bros talk about Streaming and its future with Hip Hop as in recent hears it's been a platform within the community. Next the Bros talk about the Awards Season starting up with Critics Choice awards. They discuss some winners and moments and muddle over what exactly we can expect this Awards season. Timothée Chalamet stunned at the Critics Choice Awards by publicly declaring his love for Kylie Jenner, calling her his “partner of three years.” Jennifer Lopez’s seemingly casual Vegas banter is, according to insiders, scripted down to every pause. And Andy Cohen’s claim that his dramatic new look is due to “just Botox,” weight loss, and makeup? Behind the scenes, that explanation is being met with plenty of skepticism. Hour 4 opens with #WhatsHappening as Gary and Shannon hit the day’s biggest headlines: Maduro and his wife appearing in court, markets rallying on U.S. involvement in Venezuelan oil, an overhyped vaccine update, Seattle’s new mayor ordering police to allow public drug use, and Black Monday shaking up the NFL. The crew then previews a loaded #GaSFantasy4Play six-pack with predictions across the weekend slate, including Rams–Panthers, Chargers–Patriots, and why Bills–Jaguars might be the most exciting matchup — plus what it means that NBC analysts can’t agree on a Super Bowl favorite. Birthday chaos follows as Shannon rescues Gary’s misplaced pizza delivery, a Diane Keaton ornament makes an appearance, and Gary gears up for baseball fantasy camp. The hour wraps with #MotivationalMonday, spotlighting Roger Federer’s Dartmouth speech on grit and greatness, and a look at the Critics Choice Awards officially kicking off awards season, even if you haven’t seen most of the winners.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on The Commercial Break, Bryan and Krissy sink their fangs into the delightful chaos that is Harvey Guillén—actor, comedian, voice of Perrito in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and the world's most endearing vampire familiar, Guillermo from What We Do in the Shadows. Harvey stops by to talk about how he went from recycling cans to fund acting classes to becoming the first queer Latinx actor nominated for a Critics Choice Award. Between Hollywood hustle stories, body-positivity truths, and a few questionable vampire jokes, Harvey proves that kindness, talent, and a little absurdity go a long way in showbiz.
