Disturbances from fire and wind to insects and humans play a huge role in forest dynamics through time. Throw in the impacts of climate change, and these dynamics only get more complicated. Understanding how disturbances interact and influence how forests change through time is of great interest to people from all walks of life and that is why people like Dr. Kenneth Anyomi are hard at work studying them. Join us for a deep dive on how disturbances influence forest succession and the lives that depend on it. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpet educator, improviser and composer Kris Tiner, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Kris Tiner Trumpet Interview" And, find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here --- How do you turn improvisation into an album, without taking forever to finish? How do you know when it's ready and complete? Kris Tiner has been improvising his whole life, in fact, he would point out that we all are: "We're all improvising right now. You get up and walk to the door, and which room do you go into next? That's an improvisation. What are you going to have for dinner? You get in your car and you drive down the highway, that's an improvisation." Improvisation is a natural state of being for musicians, just witness when kids pick up an instrument and start exploring. But as adults (and professional recording musicians), well, time is money, the album's gotta get released, and you've got to decide when to stamp that recording and send it out into the zeitgeist. Kris shares some of the fascinating mindset of recording improvisational jazz pieces, as reflected on his brand new album, "Sung," a collaboration with pianist Cathlene Pineda. We also talk about the experience of providing music education in a small city, not a big urban hub, and the connections and community that can be found therein. Kris teaches trumpet, jazz, composition and improvisation as Professor of Music at Bakersfield College in California, helping students gain access to music and opportunities that they may not receive otherwise. Of whom one of those students was himself, having embarked on his musical education at CSU Bakersfield in the 1990s. A full circle journey, indeed. About Kris Tiner: KRIS TINER is a California-based trumpet artist, composer, and educator. His music has been performed on five continents, his 100+ recordings have been enthusiastically reviewed in the international jazz press, and he has performance credits on MTV, NBC, PBS and Comedy Central. Tiner has received awards from ASCAP, the American Composers Forum, Chamber Music America, Montalvo Arts Center, and in 2023 was recognized as the CMEA statewide jazz educator of the year. He is a member of the Empty Cage Quartet with recordings on Portugal's Clean Feed label, and he collaborates with guitarist Mike Baggetta in the duo Tin/Bag. Tiner also performs with the Cathlene Pineda Quartet, Psychic Temple, the Industrial Jazz Group, and the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. He is the Director of Jazz Studies at Bakersfield College, and has also taught at CalArts and CSU Bakersfield. Tiner is the founder of Epigraph Records, an independent label dedicated to new creative music recorded in Bakersfield. Jean Sung has spent over 20 years inside the rooms where Asia's wealthiest families decide what to do with their money.Head of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation across 13 countries. Founder of J.P. Morgan Private Bank's Philanthropy Centre in Asia. Two decades of sitting across from ultra-high-net-worth individuals, multi-generational family offices, and some of the most powerful philanthropists on the planet. And after all of it, her conclusion is uncomfortable. Most of what we call charity isn't working. Not because people don't care. But because the entire system was built on the wrong foundation. Donations that feel good. Band-aid solutions that never touch the root of the problem. Nonprofits running on passion with no performance metrics, no accountability, and no path to scale. Wealthy donors writing the same check to the same 20 organizations year after year and calling it impact. What she's calling for is a complete restructuring of how philanthropy is practiced in Asia and beyond. Stop treating giving like charity. Start treating it like investment. Same rigor. Same accountability. Same demand for return. Because if you don't do well, you cannot do good. The conversation goes deep on the gap between intention and action, why Asian philanthropic giving is vastly underestimated and almost entirely invisible, how the now generation of wealthy families is finally starting to deploy capital the right way, and why the world needs fewer think tanks and a lot more do tanks. This is one of the most honest, challenging, and clear-eyed conversations I have had on this show.I hope it changes how you think about giving.Apply to work with me: https://www.michaelxcampion.com/Connect with me: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelxcampion/Guest — Jean Sung: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jean-k-sung-312b3338/Jean Sung is the Executive Director and Head of The Philanthropy Centre, J.P. How common or rare are species in an ecosystem? The answer to this might seem simple, but as with everything in nature, it is not. This question can even complicate how we think of habitat conservation and restoration. When we refine and implement scientific tools like species diversity indices, we need to make sure we are applying them correctly. Join me and Dr. Robert Warren as we explore measures of species diversity, the issues with improper use of these tools, and what that can mean in the context of invasive species and restoration.
#Selbsterkenntnis #JanSchmiedel #ErkennenIstLeben #MentaleFreiheit #Transformation #Perspektivwechsel #Selbstermächtigung #AuthentischSein #LebenImLicht
The race to build superintelligence is producing models that keep getting better at objective problems, but not at behaving like actual people. Joon Sung Park, founder and CEO of Simile and creator of Stanford's "Smallville" generative agents study, argues that simulating human society requires a fundamentally different kind of model. He frames today's frontier models as the "CPU of intelligence"—rational, superhuman at problems with right answers—and Simile as creating the "GPU of intelligence," built to encode the diversity of people's values, preferences, and tastes. It simulated 1,000 Americans and predicted their behavior 85% as accurately as people reproduce their own answers. CVS uses it for concept testing; some customers simulate their own earnings calls. Joon's larger bet: a "CERN of human society" that could one day model bank runs, climate cooperation, or the early signals of a collapsing democracy. Hosted by Sonya Huang, Sequoia Capital

When you start studying a group of plants, you never know what you are going to find. Sometimes it's important insights into pollination and seed dispersal. Other times it's how the uplift of mountain chains shapes wetlands and rivers. These are the kinds of discoveries that drive Dr. Ana Bedoya to study the riverweeds of the family Podostemaceae. These extreme aquatic plants are fascinating in the own right while also having a lot to teach us about a variety of scientific disciplines. Plants are habitat. Heck, even a single leaf is habitat. Same goes for plant roots. This is especially true when we consider insects and fungi. But how do these organisms interact? How do they change over gradients of moisture, temperature, space, and time? Why do we consider some parasitic while others are mutualists? The world of ecological interactions is extremely complex but people like Dr. Chris Bivins are taking stabs at trying to gain insights piece by piece. Join us for an wonderfully deep dive on the amazing ways oaks, gall wasps, fungi, and mycoheterotrophic plants live out their mysterious lives together. VOV1 - Văn phòng Đại diện Thương mại Mỹ (USTR) vừa đề xuất áp thuế bổ sung 12,5% lên hàng hóa Ấn Độ do chưa ngăn chặn hiệu quả lao động cưỡng bức.

We often let one negative moment — a failure, a regret, an old shame — erase ten blessings and cause us to forget what God says about us. This message is anchored in three words from Romans 8:14–17 that define every believer's true identity.Adopted — God didn't bring us in halfway. Through Christ, we receive His name, full belonging, and a new identity that replaces every old label.Abba — We are invited into intimate relationship with a perfect Father whose love doesn't slam the door when we fail — He calls us home.Heirs — We share in Christ's glory and inheritance, making us spiritually rich even when life feels ordinary or hard. The Big Idea: Stop living from old wounds and shame. You are more than just somebody to God.Group Discussion Romans 8:14–171. Getting Started Frank shared how one small negative thing — spilled coffee, a critical word — can quickly overshadow ten blessings. Can you relate? What tends to throw you off most easily, and why do you think that is?2. Adopted Old labels like failure, unwanted, ashamed, or never enough can stick with us for years. Is there a label from your past that still tries to define you? How does the truth of God's adoption challenge that label?3. Abba Frank acknowledged that some people struggle to see God as a loving Father because of painful experiences with their earthly father. How has your relationship with your earthly father — positive or negative — shaped the way you relate to God?4. Heirs Romans 8:17 links glory and suffering together. Has there been a season of difficulty in your life that you can now see God used to shape, refine, or redirect you? How does knowing you are an heir change the way you face hard times?Closing thought to leave with your group: Where do you most need to stop living from an old identity and start living from who God says you are?+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL
What could be better than a tiny plant with an outsized impact on the world around it? Hornleaf riverweed AKA Podostemum ceratophyllum is one such plant. Send us Fan MailThank you so much for being here!!! This week's episode is a reminder that endings and beginnings often exist side by side. After losing the state championship lacrosse game in golden goal overtime, my son's high school sports career came to an end - as well as my role as a sports mom, and my family's identification as a sports family. With graduation this week too, we find ourselves in a strange emotional limbo, and it would be easy to think this is a story about sports. But the more I think about it, the more I realize it's so much more than the end of sports. It's about transitions and grief and identity. The end of sports, the end of high school, graduation, and the uncertain summer before college have all collided at once, leaving our entire family feeling a little lost.In this episode, I explore why these endings feel so much bigger than a game. We talk about identity, grief, and the difficult space between chapters of life. For years, our kids have known exactly who they are: athletes, teammates, captains, performers. Then suddenly the season ends, the uniform comes off, and they are left asking a much bigger question: Who am I now? We'll discuss why our teens may seem directionless before they seem excited, why they're losing far more than a sport, why grief often shows up months later, and how we can support them without rushing them into the next version of themselves. We'll also talk about the transition parents experience as our own identities, routines, and family rhythms begin to shift. If your family is navigating graduation, the end of sports, or any major life transition, this conversation is a reminder that endings and beginnings often exist side by side.Thank you for listening and being part of this community! Climate surveys used by the War Department like the Defense Organizational Climate Survey (DEOCS) are annual check-ins to assess unit morale, cohesion and leadership trust. Traditionally, these surveys take a long time to gather and analyze by leadership. A pair of Marine Corps innovators told AI GovCast that they've created a new AI–enabled survey tool prototype that is designed to give commanders near‑real‑time insight the day‑to‑day stressors affecting Marines. The prototype, called PULSE Check, aims to close long‑standing feedback gaps that leaders say contribute to retention problems — particularly in the reserve component. Col. Prescott Wilson, chief of staff for the 4th Marine Logistics Group, said the idea emerged after a commanders' conference where Marines explained why they were leaving drilling status for the Individual Ready Reserve. "By the time we're talking to these Marines on stage, they've already made a decision … that's talent we can't get back," Wilson said. Lt. Col. Samuel Sung, an innovation officer with the Logistics Innovation Office and a Marine reservist who co‑developed the prototype, said the team deliberately focused first on whether the idea was even useful before tackling the complex security and compliance requirements of deploying AI inside the department. He added that AI-driven analysis enables more frequent surveys and faster feedback cycles, allowing commanders to test changes and measure results monthly instead of annually. That accelerated process, Sung said, can improve decision-making while also reinforcing to Marines that their feedback is being heard.

Seed storage is one of the most important tools in plant conservation, but did you know you can also store pollen? We still have a lot to learn about storing both pollen and seeds for most species, and people like Dr. Dustin Wolkis of the Center for Plant Conservation are hard at work doing just that. Join us for an interesting look at what he and his colleagues are doing to prevent plant extinction. Long lived organisms like trees face a lot of challenges throughout their lifetime. Disturbances big and small coupled with climate change are going to continue to stress trees wherever they grow. Which trees have the highest capacity to deal with said stresses? We don't know until we go looking. That is what drives scientists like Dr. Jill Hamilton. Join us as we look at how she is using poplars, spruce, and ash to understand how trees and their hybrids may or may not have what it takes to survive climate stress. What if loneliness isn't just an emotion… but one of the most dangerous biological threats to your health? In this deeply personal and scientifically explosive solo episode, Darin opens up about something he recently realized in his own life: despite being surrounded by people, he was lonely. But what began as an emotional realization quickly became a deep dive into some of the most shocking research he's ever uncovered, showing that chronic loneliness may increase the risk of heart disease, dementia, cancer, autoimmune dysfunction, accelerated aging, and early death. From inflammatory gene expression and cortisol dysregulation to oxytocin, vulnerability, and the collapse of real human connection in the digital age, this episode reveals why loneliness may be the most overlooked "fatal convenience" of modern life, and how vulnerability may be the medicine. What You'll Learn Why loneliness is a biological crisis, not just an emotional feeling The shocking link between loneliness and heart disease, dementia, and early death Why the quality of your relationships is the #1 predictor of long-term health How loneliness activates inflammatory genes inside your body The role of cortisol, sleep disruption, and chronic stress in social isolation Why social media and "surface-level connection" are replacing real intimacy The connection between loneliness and Alzheimer's disease How oxytocin and genuine connection reduce inflammation Why vulnerability is the gateway to meaningful relationships Practical ways to create deeper connection starting today Chapters 00:00:33 – Sponsor: the truth about the exploding NAD supplement market 00:01:04 – Why supplement verification and transparency matter 00:02:17 – Opening: Darin admits something deeply personal 00:02:30 – "I realized recently… I'm lonely" 00:02:37 – The difference between being surrounded by people vs being truly known 00:03:06 – Loneliness as a biological experience, not just an emotional one 00:03:27 – The hidden risks: heart disease, dementia, cancer, early death 00:03:45 – Why this is not fringe science 00:04:13 – The most important predictor of long-term health 00:04:34 – Why relationship QUALITY matters more than quantity 00:05:06 – The global loneliness epidemic 00:05:11 – U.S. Surgeon General advisory on loneliness 00:05:39 – Loneliness declared a public health crisis 00:06:02 – 50% of Americans report measurable loneliness 00:06:22 – "A generational collapse of connection" 00:06:30 – 29% of adults have no close friends 00:06:40 – Face-to-face interactions dramatically declining 00:07:01 – The UK, Japan, and Australia loneliness crisis initiatives 00:07:32 – The paradox: hyperconnected but deeply isolated 00:08:04 – Loneliness as a biological alarm signal 00:08:31 – What loneliness actually looks like in modern life 00:08:42 – The lonely CEO, the unseen mother, the isolated social media addict 00:09:31 – "Perceived social isolation" and why the brain can't tell the difference 00:10:21 – Meta-analysis of 3.4 million people 00:10:55 – Loneliness vs obesity and smoking risk comparisons 00:11:18 – The biology of loneliness begins 00:11:50 – NF-kB: inflammatory gene activation explained 00:12:33 – How loneliness changes gene expression 00:13:02 – Chronic inflammation and disease pathways 00:13:21 – Cortisol, sleep disruption, and immune dysfunction 00:14:00 – How loneliness affects brain repair and amyloid plaque clearing 00:14:21 – Sponsor: Fatty15 and cellular health 00:18:02 – The Alzheimer's and dementia connection 00:18:25 – Loneliness as a major modifiable dementia risk factor 00:18:57 – Cortisol, neuroinflammation, and brain degeneration 00:19:16 – The hippocampus physically shrinking in lonely people 00:19:27 – Social media as a "fatal convenience" 00:19:57 – The oxytocin economy: connection as medicine 00:20:15 – Oxytocin as one of the body's strongest anti-inflammatory molecules 00:20:30 – HeartMath research: emotional synchronization between people 00:20:48 – "You regulate each other's biology" 00:21:07 – The real barrier: vulnerability 00:21:32 – Darin's recent experiences with radical vulnerability 00:21:54 – Conversations with family, ex-partners, and loved ones 00:22:35 – Brené Brown's research on connection and worthiness 00:23:14 – The "depth audit" exercise 00:23:42 – Reaching out, expressing appreciation, and owning your emotions 00:24:01 – Sacred hours: spending time without phones 00:24:13 – Questions that create real intimacy 00:24:30 – Darin's emotional conversation with his brother 00:25:03 – Protecting yourself from social media disconnection 00:25:20 – Becoming a source of joy and connection in everyday life 00:25:25 – Darin reflects on seven years of subtle loneliness 00:25:48 – The shift from surface conversations to meaningful connection 00:26:01 – "If you want love, give love" 00:26:19 – Final message: generate the connection you want to receive 00:26:22 – Closing thoughts and outro Thank You to Our Sponsors Truniagen: Go to www.truniagen.com and use code DARIN20 at checkout for 20% off Fatty15: Get an additional 15% off their 90-day subscription Starter Kit by going to fatty15.com/DARIN and using code DARIN at checkout.
