Where will Meta, Apple, and Google be three years from now? It's starting to look like they might all be very different. Nilay, David, and The Verge's Richard Lawler start the show with Eddy Cue's testimony in the Google search trial, in which Cue argued that AI is taking over — and that Google should be allowed to keep paying Apple gobs of money. The hosts also chat about the latest in the Meta trials, and how the recent Apple ruling is already changing the App Store. Then, there are some gadgets to talk about: the panopticon-slash-killer-app coming for Meta's smart glasses, the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, and a lot of new iPhones. In the lightning round, we do another round of Brendan Carr is a Dummy, then talk about some new Netflix designs and the latest in our worldwide hunt for party speakers. 145: After iPhone 17: What to Expect in 2026 and Beyond

The MacRumors Show

On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we talk through how the iPhone lineup is rumored to change after the release of the iPhone 17 lineup later this year, looking at what to expect in 2026, 2027, and beyond. Apple's recently rumored ‌iPhone‌ roadmap beyond the ‌iPhone 17‌ reveals a significant strategic shift in both release cadence and product positioning. With increasing competition, an expanding lineup, and evolving manufacturing logistics—particularly the move away from China toward production in India—Apple is exploring a staggered release schedule designed to avoid marketing fatigue and maintain focus across the six main ‌iPhone‌ models that are expected to be on sale by the end of next year. In spring 2026, Apple may introduce the "iPhone 17e" as a refresh of the lower-cost model introduced this year. The major wave of change begins in fall 2026, with the launch of the "‌iPhone‌ 18 Air," "‌iPhone‌ 18 Pro," and "‌iPhone‌ 18 Pro Max." The Pro models are expected to introduce under-display Face ID for the first time, reducing the need for a visible sensor array and leaving only a small camera hole at the top-left corner of the display. It remains unclear how this change will affect the presence or function of the Dynamic Island. Camera upgrades are also expected, including a variable aperture 48MP main lens and a likely new Samsung sensor for the ultra-wide camera. Other enhancements include Apple's in-house "C2" modem and an "A20" chip made with TSMC's upcoming 2nm process. Fall 2026 is also expected to mark the debut of Apple's first foldable ‌iPhone‌. Featuring a book-style design, the device will offer a 5.7-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner display. Apple reportedly aims to beat competitors with a superior hinge mechanism crafted from titanium and stainless steel, and a display with a nearly invisible crease. Unlike other flagship iPhones, the foldable model will use Touch ID embedded in the power button instead of Face ID, likely due to internal space constraints. It will also purportedly include just two rear cameras, a high-density battery, and an impressively slim profile: 4.5mm when open, and 9–9.5mm when closed. In spring 2027, the base "‌iPhone‌ 18" and "‌iPhone‌ 18e" models will follow. In fall 2027, Apple is expected to introduce the "iPhone 19 Air" with a larger display, exceeding the 6.6 inches of the previous two Air models. The "‌iPhone‌ 19 Pro" and "‌iPhone‌ 19 Pro Max"—possibly branded to mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone—will feature a "bold" redesign, incorporating more glass and, for the first time, an under-display front camera. The result will likely be a true edge-to-edge screen without notches or cutouts, fulfilling a long-standing vision for a seamless all-display ‌iPhone‌. The second-generation foldable ‌iPhone‌ is also scheduled for fall 2027, building on the first model with further refinements and enhanced durability. While plans for spring 2028 are less concrete, it's likely that the standard "‌iPhone‌ 19" and potentially "‌iPhone‌ 19e" models will arrive then, continuing the new spring/fall rollout rhythm. Looking even further ahead, Apple's ambitions may go beyond smartphones altogether. According to remarks from Apple executive Eddy Cue this week, the ‌iPhone‌ could be obsolete within a decade, replaced by AI-powered wearables and ambient computing experiences

Why I won't be buying Palantir technologies anytime soon When I'm out in public many times people ask me what my opinions are when it comes to investing, the markets or individual stocks. I have to say the one stock that people seem to be asking the most about recently is Palantir Technologies, their ticker symbol is PLTR. I believe I'm asked about this company because investors look at the hype of the past performance and the fact that this stock is up over 1,000% since going public in 2020. That creates excitement for investors, but is it worth buying now? The company currently trades around 60 times next year's estimated sales, and again that is sales not earnings! That makes it the most expensive stock in the S&P 500. There are signs that growth outside of the US is slowing and I don't like that they have three unnamed companies that accounted for 17% of the total revenue last year. Usually hype like this goes the same path, which ultimately results in large losses for buyers at this point in the cycle. A more recent example comes from the company Snowflake. In 2021, Snowflake hit an all-time high over $400 per share. Today that stock is down nearly 60% and trades around $167 per share. You don't hear much about it now, but I remember back in 2021 many people were asking about this company as well. I'm also not thrilled with Palantir's CEO, Alex Karp, who during an interview just a few months ago had some pretty nasty comments about analysts who don't agree with him on the stock price. He said “I love the idea of getting a drone and having light fentanyl laced urine spraying on analysts who've tried to screw us.” Maybe I'm old school, but I don't think that is anyway for the CEO of a company of any size to talk about anyone that does not agree with the CEO's position. Especially considering many times they aren't knocking the business, just the fact that this company's valuation is extremely crazy! I will also try my best to refrain from making any comments on Mr. Karp's hairstyle, but it just seems a little bit outlandish for a CEO to have that type of hairstyle. As far as the stock goes, maybe the craziness will continue and perhaps it does go higher, but if people ask me if they should buy, sell, or hold the stock, I would definitely say sell! I guess I now have to be careful of drones flying above my head that could be spraying fentanyl laced urine on me.   Good news, only 26% of big money managers are bullish A recent poll from Barron‘s magazine, which they conduct twice a year, found that only 26% of big money managers were bullish and thought stocks would go up while 74% were either neutral or bearish on stocks. They said 32% of respondents were bearish and that was the highest percent since 1997 while the 26% that were bullish marked the lowest reading since 1997. I think Barron's Magazine is a good source of information, but I was disappointed that they did not list the years of experience of the managers that were being polled. The reason for my concern is that the last big negative in the economy and the market was in 2008, which was 17 years ago. A current manager that graduated school at age 23 would now be 40 years old and they did not experience managing money through 2008. Living through and managing money through a challenge like that provided me with extremely valuable lessons that younger managers would not understand. But why is this negative report a good sign in my opinion? Their current asset allocation is only 64% in equities with 36% in other investments like fixed income and cash. They will not stay bearish forever and if they change direction in the next 6 to 12 months, they will start buying equities again, which will push up prices. If you're looking for value, the least attractive sectors were energy, real estate, and utilities. I have talked about my concerns around the Magnificent Seven and now only 10% of these managers think the Mag Seven will lead the market over the next six months. Even looking out 12 months only climbed 32% thought the group would lead the market. When asked about the strength of the US dollar going forward 12 months, 68% of the money managers said it will be weaker, which I agree with. Only 15% of the managers think it will be stronger a year from now. These surveys also provide an interesting insight into what other money managers are thinking.   Apple's stock continues to amaze me There seems to be so much negative news that continues to come out against Apple, but the stock continues to remain relatively steady given the amount of negativity. We all know about the tariffs and the delayed AI rollout, but I was definitely concerned by a couple announcements that would have large impacts on Apple's service revenue. This segment has been a bright spot for Apple, but in the most recent quarter it missed expectations and grew at just 11.6% compared to last year. The big concern I have is around Alphabet's estimated payment of around $20 billion annually to be the default search engine. There is concern if this will hold up given the ruling that Alphabet holds a monopoly and the need for remedies, but also this week Apple executive, Eddy Cue, added additional concerns. He stated the searches in Apple's Safari browser fell for the first time in April, something that has never happened in 20 years. He then added that the iPhone maker is looking at adding AI search options to the Safari browser. If they did this, would Alphabet really want to keep paying $20 billion a year for that right? I don't think so! The other major concern that seemed to get little attention was the fact that in a recent ruling a judge ordered Apple to immediately stop imposing commissions on purchases made for iPhone apps through web links inside its apps. This has enabled developers like Amazon and Spotify to update their apps to avoid Apple's commissions and direct customers to their own website for payments. This commission rate was around 27% for Apple and it could cost Apple billions of dollars annually. All this comes with the fact that Apple still trades around 25x 2026 earnings even though revenue is only estimated to grow low to mid-single digits. In my opinion, Apple really needs some good/exciting news to get this stock moving higher and at this time I don't see where that is going to come from.   Financial Planning: Breaking Down Retirement Income Taxation Retirement income varies widely in tax treatment, with some sources being far less tax-friendly than others. In order from worst to best, pension payments and traditional IRA withdrawals are among the least favorable—they're fully taxable as ordinary income at both the federal and state levels. Interest income from bonds, CDs, and savings accounts, as well as annuity earnings from non-retirement accounts, are also taxed as ordinary income at both levels and can trigger the additional 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) if income thresholds are exceeded. Rental income is similarly taxed but allows deductions and depreciation to offset some of the tax burden. Long-term capital gains and qualified dividends receive preferential federal tax rates—as low as 0%—but are still taxed as ordinary income in California and many other states. Social Security is partially taxed at the federal level—between 0% and 85% is included as taxable income depending on total income—but is not taxed in most states, including California, making it relatively tax-favorable. Roth IRA withdrawals are the most tax-friendly, being completely tax-free at both the federal and state levels if qualified. Understanding how each income type is taxed can help guide investment decisions during working years and inform how to structure withdrawals in retirement for optimal tax efficiency.   Companies Discussed: The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (SMG), Block, Inc. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1039: Today we're talking about Carvana's record-setting quarter and bold new goal, Ford's strategic price hikes post-tariffs, and why Google's stock took a beating after an Apple exec dropped a courtroom AI bomb.Show Notes with links:Carvana has bounced back in a major way, setting a new quarterly record for used-vehicle sales and showcasing the company's transformation from high-growth chaos to sustainable profitability, even amid looming tariff concerns.Q1 retail sales hit 133,898 units, up 46% year over year—beating their prior record by 16,000 vehicles.Net income reached $373M; revenue surged 38% to $4.2B.Tariffs caused a temporary demand bump, but Carvana is now focused on adapting inventory to price-sensitive consumer behavior.Carvana aims to sell 3 million vehicles annually within 5–10 years, targeting a 13.5% adjusted EBITDA margin by fully utilizing its existing infrastructure like ADESA megasites and inspection centers.CEO Ernie Garcia emphasized flexibility: “We've got significant margin to work with… and significant cash balances.”As the auto industry adjusts to newly announced tariffs, Ford is selectively increasing prices on several 2025 models while shielding current dealer inventory.Starting May 2, 2025 Mavericks, Bronco Sports, and Mach-Es (all produced in Mexico) will see MSRP increases of $600–$2,000, depending on trim and features.Existing stock and vehicles already in transit will keep their original sticker prices.Earlier this week, Ford withdrew its 2025 outlook, citing $1.5B in expected tariff-related earnings impact.Ford is one of the first major automakers to publicly respond to the impact of the tariffs with pricing strategy.“We can't forecast what we can't see,” said one executive privatelyIn a courtroom twist, an Apple executive may have confirmed Google's worst fear—that AI is starting to eat into its search dominance.Eddy Cue, Apple's services chief, testified that Safari searches dipped in April for the first time ever, likely due to users turning to AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity.Cue expects Apple will eventually add AI search engines as user-selectable options in Safari. The revelation came during Google's antitrust trial, where Apple disclosed it receives over $20B annually to keep Google the default.Google stock fell more than 7% following Cue's testimony, wiping out tens of billions in market cap. They responded by saying “we continue to see overall query growth,” especially from Apple platforms.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

His CEO, Parker Conrad, “spikes” in certain skill areas, and the rest of the executive team needs to maximize his ability to thrive while “taking care of the rest of it.” Matt likened the work to being a hobbyist airplane pilot, who can't get a license without knowing all the minute details about their plane's engine and aerodynamics. “You can't be a good pilot if you don't understand the engine, because if something goes wrong, you want to be able to troubleshoot it,” he says. “An executive coming in to fly your airplane better learn the engine.”Chapters:(01:08) - Telling Rippling's story (04:27) - Founding & failing at Inkling (09:30) - Different types of hard (13:55) - Discipline and stamina (15:22) - Meeting with Steve Jobs (19:20) - Definitely, give up! Just a day prior, there were approximately 6,000 subscriptions, but this figure skyrocketed to a staggering 110,000 on July 21 when Messi played his first match in the Leagues Cup. In a recent blog post, Antenna described the impact of Messi's arrival as the "Messi Effect," noting that this level of growth for a year-old streaming package was both unique and profound. Typically, sport-specific streaming services see a surge in sign-ups at the start of the season, followed by gradual additions due to significant games or pricing promotions. However, the statistics reveal that nearly half of all MLS Season Pass sign-ups occurred in July following Messi's entry into the league, underscoring the enormous interest he brought to Major League Soccer. Antenna's research also uncovered that 15% of MLS Season Pass subscribers also subscribed to Apple TV+, which is home to Apple's scripted programming, including popular shows like "The Morning Show" and "Ted Lasso." Additionally, nearly half of the new subscribers were already Apple TV+ subscribers before adding MLS Season Pass, which costs an additional $12.99 per month, to their subscription. It's worth noting that Antenna's data only covers sign-ups in the United States, and the global appeal of the international superstar likely extends even further. Apple has not disclosed the exact number of subscribers to the service. However, Apple's Senior Vice President of Services, Eddy Cue, recently stated that it is performing "much better than forecasted" in terms of subscriptions and viewership. Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, echoed this sentiment during an August earnings call, acknowledging that Messi's move to Inter Miami had a positive impact on their streaming service. Messi actively promotes the MLS Season Pass on match days by sharing sign-up links on his Instagram stories. This is not surprising, as reports suggest that his deal with Inter Miami includes a share of the revenue generated from new MLS Season Pass subscribers. Last summer, Apple secured a groundbreaking 10-year, $2.5 billion deal to stream MLS matches internationally, marking the tech giant's first major sports agreement. Messi's signing has undoubtedly made this media rights deal even more valuable than initially anticipated, solidifying his status as a global soccer icon with a profound impact on the American soccer scene. Reference article: https://edition.cnn.com/2023/09/05/business/leo-messi-apple-tv-signups/index.html

This day in legal history, September 6, is a dark one – but one that should not be ignored just because it is difficult to talk about. On September 6, 1941, German authorities announced the adoption of a regulation requiring all Jewish people in German territories to wear the Star of David. For our purposes here on a legal news website, we'll talk about how it highlights and exemplifies the Nazi regime's obsession with committing their atrocities under the color of law. From 1935, the Nazi regime utilized the law as a tool for the systemic persecution of the Jewish people, initiating this with the enactment of the Nuremberg Laws. These laws, officially signed by Hitler and other Nazi leaders, stripped German Jews of their citizenship, prohibited marriages between Jews and other Germans, and barred Jews from displaying the German flag, now represented by the swastika. This legal framework, which was further intensified in the subsequent years, facilitated the marginalization, segregation, and eventual extermination of the Jewish community in Germany. The Nazis had begun their legal assault on the Jewish population as early as 1933, using official decrees to progressively strip Jews of various rights, including holding public office, working in certain professions, and participating in economic activities. This legal strategy was part of a broader effort to segregate Jews from the social, political, and economic life of Germany, with the ultimate aim of appeasing radical elements within the Nazi party who were clamoring for more drastic measures against the Jews.During the Nuremberg Trials that followed World War II, these laws served as critical evidence in the prosecution of prominent Nazi leaders, highlighting the extent to which the Nazi regime had manipulated the law to facilitate their campaign of persecution and genocide. In the ongoing California ethics case, attorney John Eastman, who had previously advised that the vice president could overturn the 2020 election results, was compelled to testify, despite his efforts to invoke Fifth Amendment protections against self-incrimination. State Bar Court Judge Yvette D. Roland dismissed Eastman's defense that testifying would infringe on his Fifth Amendment rights, a stance she had maintained even as criminal cases were underway. Eastman, along with Donald Trump and 17 others, faces racketeering charges in Georgia, linked to attempts to declare Trump the winner of the 2020 election.Eastman's lawyer, Randall Miller, emphasized that the demand for Eastman's testimony in the bar case, which could potentially lead to the revocation of his law license, places him in a precarious position. Miller highlighted the dilemma Eastman faces: remaining silent might undermine his defense, while full testimony could jeopardize the ongoing Georgia case. Despite these arguments, Judge Roland noted that Eastman had already waived his right to self-incrimination by testifying extensively in the case and in previous instances, including before the January 6 congressional committee and the Fulton County grand jury. The judge underscored that Eastman was well aware of the gravity of the committee's questions, which were closely tied to the allegations presented in the disciplinary charges. Although the court allowed a brief postponement for Eastman to attend to criminal indictment procedures in Fulton County, it rejected the defense's plea to halt or postpone the case further, citing no alternative reasons were provided. Efforts by Eastman to prevent the state bar prosecutors from presenting evidence concerning his alleged involvement in devising alternative elector slates were also dismissed. As the trial continues, with additional sessions scheduled from September 12-15, Eastman faces 11 counts of ethical and legal violations pertaining to his post-election actions, culminating in the January 6 Capitol raid. During his testimony, he began addressing questions about the memos he had dispatched to presidential advisors, discussing potential strategies to invalidate or delay the vote counting process. The trial is set to feature testimonies from several individuals, including accountant Joseph Fried, who lacks formal training in election audits but conducted a study on the 2020 election "anomalies", and former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Michael Gabelman. The case, represented by Miller Law Associates for Eastman and the Office of Chief Trial Counsel for the bar, continues to unfold.Trump Lawyer Eastman Forced to Testify in California Ethics CaseElliott Broidy, a former prominent fundraiser for ex-President Donald Trump, has issued a subpoena to the law firm Covington & Burling, seeking documents in a lawsuit where he alleges a conspiracy backed by Qatar to hack and defame him. The law firm, which represented Qatar in various US legal cases, objected to the subpoena, citing privilege and sovereign immunity. This move is seen as an assertive approach by Broidy's legal team to involve a US law firm in the case, a rare occurrence due to the attorney-client privilege that usually protects such communications.Broidy, who resigned from his position as the deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee in 2018 following a scandal and was later pardoned by Trump for illegal lobbying charges, initiated this lawsuit four years ago. He accused Qatar of orchestrating a campaign to tarnish his reputation, alleging that they disseminated hacked information about him to journalists. The lawsuit specifically targets consulting firm Stonington Strategies and several individuals who have worked for Qatar, although the nation itself is not officially named in the suit.Broidy contends that both Qatar and Covington have worked to conceal evidence pertinent to the case and has requested the US District Court to mandate a forensic examination to uncover any hidden data. The defendants are expected to respond to these allegations by September 8. Covington has dismissed Broidy's accusations as baseless, emphasizing that the documents in question actually support Qatar's claims of privilege. Trump Ex-Fundraiser Targets Qatar's US Law Firm in Hack LawsuitThe U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina has given preliminary approval to a revised $12.5 billion settlement between 3M and water utilities concerning the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination issue. This settlement includes a unique "Protection Against Claims-Over" provision, which prevents 3M from reclaiming settlement money from water utilities in case of future lawsuits related to drinking water harm. This change enhances the value of the settlement for the participating water systems, as it eliminates the possibility of them being held liable for damages exceeding their recovery from the settlement. The final decision on the settlement will be made by Judge Richard Mark Gergel after a hearing scheduled for February 2, 2024, with 3M's payouts extending until 2036. Despite this, several attorneys general have criticized the settlement amount as insufficient to scover the damages caused by 3M's products to public water systems, burdening ratepayers and taxpayers. They also warned that the ongoing litigation could potentially bankrupt 3M by the end of the 12-year payout period. The settlement might pave the way for a larger agreement resembling the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with tobacco companies, although the science on the diseases resulting from PFAS exposure remains unclear.3M's Revised PFAS Settlement Includes Atypical Liability TermsThree high-ranking Apple executives, Eddy Cue, John Giannandrea, and Adrian Perica, have failed in their attempt to prevent the U.S. Justice Department from summoning them as witnesses in the forthcoming trial against Google, where the latter is accused of misusing its search dominance. The executives had contended that being called to testify would be "duplicative" and "unduly burdensome," given their participation in earlier stages of the case. Despite not being a defendant, Apple claims to have been subjected to "overbroad" demands, having already shared over 125,000 documents from its senior executives.U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta rejected Apple's plea to nullify the subpoenas on Monday. The Justice Department's case is focused on Google's practice of sharing substantial annual advertising revenues with business allies like Apple, to ensure Google's search engine is the default on their devices. The trial, which is expected to scrutinize Google's information-services agreement with Apple closely, is scheduled to commence on September 12 in Judge Mehta's court. Apple has expressed concerns that the trial could inadvertently reveal its highly sensitive competitive information.Apple execs lose bid to block testimony at Google antitrust trial | ReutersThe Oregon Supreme Court is set to vote on a groundbreaking alternative to the bar exam for licensing attorneys in the state. This initiative, which has been in development since 2020 by the Oregon State Board of Bar Examiners, proposes that law school graduates can become licensed after completing 675 hours of supervised legal work, equivalent to the typical study time for the bar exam. The program, named the Supervised Practice Portfolio Examination, also requires candidates to submit eight pieces of legal writing, lead two client interviews or counseling sessions, and spearhead two negotiations, among other prerequisites.Participants' portfolios will be assessed by Oregon bar examiners, and those achieving the necessary scores will be inducted into the state bar, with compensation provided for their efforts. The proposal, which aims to be a model for other states considering similar pathways, would significantly expand the scale of bar exam alternatives, accommodating law students both within and outside Oregon. A second pathway, focusing on practice-based coursework during the last two years of law school, is also under development. Currently, only Wisconsin and New Hampshire offer limited alternatives to the bar exam.Oregon Supreme Court to vote on bar exam alternative | ReutersGoogle has tentatively settled a class-action lawsuit in the U.S., where it was accused of violating federal antitrust laws through its Play Store by allegedly overcharging customers, as per a recent court document. The lawsuit, initiated by over 30 U.S. states representing 21 million consumers, argued that Google's supposed monopoly might have led to increased app prices and limited options for consumers. The specific terms of the settlement remain undisclosed. The parties involved in the settlement have requested the cancellation of the trial that was slated for November 6. While Google has not admitted to any wrongdoing and declined to comment on the settlement, the court's approval is pending. This case is one among several where Google is accused of maintaining monopolies in the Android app and in-app goods markets, often requiring apps to use Google's payment tools and surrender up to 30% of digital goods sales. Notably, Epic Games and Match Group, who have raised similar claims against Google, are not part of this proposed settlement.Google reaches tentative settlement in US Play Store lawsuit | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe
